We're going to appoint people in each of the subforums to welcome newbies in by an automated PM and show them how things work in the particular subforum.
The appointment thing is so that at least one person knows it is their job, and so the newbie doesn't get buried under a PM onslaught the first time they post.
We will give the appointee (now called Heralds) a spiffy icon badge so people will know they are on the job for everybody. There will also be access to a report that shows who is new in the subforum.
If you want to apply for the position, all you have to do is post a welcome draft here. That way, a moderator will consider you. If someone else has already applied for the position, don't worry! Multiple people can apply for one subforum.
This is a list of the heralds that have already been appointed and the subforums that still need heralds.
Open sections with inactive heralds:
- Betsyandthe Five Avengers — World Building
- Ori Doodle — Old Folks Home
- Cyto Zytokine — New Media
- Totemic Hero — Webcomics
- JHM — Music
- Parable — On-Topic Conversations
- GastonRabbit — Content Violation Discussions

That's what I figured. I was just kinda curious because I've gotten a couple people asking me what the deal is with the badge.
Reaction Image RepositoryI would like to volunteer for the Literature conversations, seeing the Herald for that section has not been determined yet (correct and ignore me if I am wrong).

I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.Well, I applied for it a LONG time ago... but I have had no response yet. I am not sure whether my entry was rejected, or whether they didn't have time to follow through.
Herald of the Literature Sub-Forum. Share me your favourite book/series/author!I saw your entry, yes.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.Well, I know it's not much of a position, but personally, I do try to at least be fairly active beyond the normal job of answering PMs. This includes handling questions on general webcomic issues, participating in the recommendations thread (something I'd suggest all heralds of media forums should do), and my own brainchild, the virus alerts thread.
Greeting people is nice, but even if we're not mods, there plenty we can do.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)@dRoy: If you want to apply, write up the text of what would be your PM and post it here. That's the application process.
@ryzvonusef: Judging from past experience, if it is rejected, they say so. This hasn't been a high priority, and with the amount of major stuff happening lately, it's been even less so. Which is to say that I'm pretty sure they just haven't had time to follow through yet.
Change made, Komodin.
Since this project has lagged behind for a while, I'd like each candidate who has submitted a draft to state if they're still up for the position. If anyone's changed their mind, that's okay. Just let us know. Same goes for any already appointed heralds.
If you've heard nothing, that doesn't mean your draft has been rejected. It's still under consideration.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerI am still requesting consideration.
Still up and awaiting any feedback!

I now go by Graf von Tirol.Still up, but DC's is better. I wrote mine sort of a long time ago, so I may need to look at it again.
I'm not crazy, I just don't give a darn!I am up for (re-)consideration. I may not post a lot, but rest assured I visit the forum daily.
Herald of the Literature Sub-Forum. Share me your favourite book/series/author!Do you have to be an active member of a subforum to be its herald? 'cuz there doesn't seem to be many applicant for the remaining sections yet I'd still like to help out.
#IceBearForPresidentWell, you should at least post at that subforum. Not every day or religiously, but we can't really hand the position to someone who never posts in that forum.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerIt's better to be an active member. If you're not an active member, you're less likely to know the in and outs of the subforum, its culture, what goes where, etc., all of which would make it harder to answer any questions which might come your way.
Also, I know at least some of us take an active role in trying to answer questions which appear within the threads themselves, which is something you can't do unless you're active there.
Would anyone be willing to give me some advice on my prospective PM/greeting? The problem is that this particular subforum is just so open-ended as far as topics and discussion is concerned, and it's difficult to really encapsulate the broad range of goings on here.
One thought I had was: "Wiki Talk is the board where major wiki and forum policy is made. The High Comittee of TV Tropes, in a certain sense"
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanSo noted and incorporated. I took further liberties to modify my proposal, which has me at something like this:
Welcome to Wiki Talk
Unlike the other subforums in the Wiki and Forums section, the Wiki Talk section is fairly open as far as what threads can be about, so long as they relate to the site and issues pertaining thereto. This forum is also the central location for policy discussion and formation. Many threads in this section have to do with site regulations, features, and other things. In this section, you can learn more about and provide feedback with regard to heralds, the badge shop, namespacing, and more. With that said, most questions and discussion that don't belong in one of the other subforums in the section probably go here too. If it does belong in one of the other subforums of the Wiki and Forums section (listed below), please go there instead.
The other subforums in this section are (in no particular order):
- Trope Repair Shop - for addressing issues with a particular trope, such as misuse or possible duplication of a trope.
- Special Efforts - for mass-scale projects requiring the work of many editors, such as namespacing or major clean up efforts.
- Content Violation Discussions - for discussing the site's content policy regarding explicit content as found in works. More information can be found here. If you're interested in the policy itself, please check out No Lewdness, No Prudishness and What Is Porn.
- Sandbox - for testing markup on the wiki. This subforum is not considered an On-Topic Forum, but please be mindful of the purpose of the subforum.
- Tech Wishlist and Bug Reports - for reporting technical issues with the forum or the site, and requesting new features.
- Image Pickin' - for proposing, replacing, and removing images from various wiki pages.
- Trope Talk - for discussion of particular tropes and relationships between tropes. Specific issues should be posted on the page's discussion page though.
- Translations - for assisting in translating the wiki into various languages. If you are fluent in a language other than English and would like to assist, this is the subforum for you.
If, on the other hand, you have a specific issue with a particular article or a problem editor (as opposed to general policy), you should probably go to Ask The Tropers to get said issue addressed. We also have Lost And Found for tropers looking to find a particular trope, and Remember That Show for those looking for a particular work. If you have a new trope idea, you should head to YKTTW (short for You Know, That Thing Where...)
Like all subforums in this section (except the Sandbox), every thread in the section should be considered an On-Topic Discussion. Derailing a conversation here is cause for thumps, and repeated thumps may result in a forum ban. If you have an issue that doesn't seem to be covered in a thread, feel free to start a new one, but please check the first page before doing so, especially the stickied threads located at the top of the page.
The rules are strictly enforced here, and you should read and understand them before posting. The most important rule is to be civil - while it is fine to disagree with site policy and offer suggestions, please do so in a respectful manner. Incivility will not be tolerated. Complaint threads are not allowed either - if you have issues with the site, please be open minded and understanding, and come with thoughtful criticisms and suggestions. Please also be mindful that the administration has reasons for doing things the way they are, so if your suggestion is not accepted, respect the decision of the staff. Harassing them after being asked to stop is grounds for an immediate ban.
If you have questions about this subforum, feel free to respond to this PM with your concerns. If you have questions with site policy, you should feel free to contact the staff, who you can find on this page. Please don't PM them for specific issues though; it's best to go through Ask The Tropers (wiki-side) or the Holler System (the yellow triangle above every post; forum-side).
So again, welcome to the subforum, and on behalf of the staff and everyone here, we hope you enjoy yourself and will make a valued contributor to this site.

I updated the OP with details and instructions, along with the list of drafts. We need more candidates!
Earl of Sandvich is now the herald for IJAM.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerI'm not entirely sure if I'll go through with this, but I'm considering stepping down as Writer's Block Herald for two reasons:
- I feel like my ideals and opinions clash too much with the crowd. I don't have any particular bond with any of the members, and considering that the general opinion is against the demographic I love and write, it might be counter-productive against my actual writing—which has went into a standstill.
- I fell like I'm not contributing enough in the position of Herald and that Writer's Block would be fine without one, even if only for a period of time.
I gladly accept this position. Thanks!
I now go by Graf von Tirol. On TV Tropes Forum, should forums with a herald have a brief mention of who the herald is next to them? It would make sense, as you can contact them for more detailed stuff about a particular forum, but I don't know if they'd be happy with that.
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.I'd be fine with that. After all, the whole point of being a Herald is to answer questions that people have about the subforum.

I'd be fine with that as well.
Reaction Image RepositoryI'm fine with that.
Hyperforce Go! http://vmkid.me/
Yeah, we're basically doormen... I still like the position, though.
Experience has taught me to investigate anything that glows.
