Metroid Other M. I thoroughly enjoyed the game, even if it was short (heck, so are the Prime games). I think that people are mostly hating on this game just because of Samus' tendency to monologue, and are missing the fun, fast-paced gameplay.

Dragon Age 2, Knights Of The Old Republic 2, Bioshock 2, Thief 3, Final Fantasy VII and XII, the Dead Money expansion to Fallout New Vegas.
They've all got flaws. Some of them have significant flaws, but they're nowhere near as bad as people make them out to be. Those first three even manage to tell better stories that the games they're sequels too, but are marred by a lack of polish, or — in the case of Bioshock 2 — disinterest.
This post has been powered by avenging fury and a balanced diet.Modern Warfare series as a whole. I mean, yeah, it ain't the most jaw-droppingly amazing game ever, but cut it some slack. Especially egregrious because other FP Ses mock it despite them stealing its formula.
Also, a more minor example, but every Pokemon game after Gold and Silver. Seriously guys, cut the nostalgia crap; it is getting really old...

"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.Every single popular game ever, except those made by Valve (Which thankfully don't receive much hate).
"Overrated" and "overhated" both are pretty much meaningless, since samples can differ so much and the entire question of which view is right is based on the subjective quality of the game in question.
Not enough people give Command And Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars the credit it deserves.

As for me: Any Final Fantasy past 7 gets a lot of flak. The series has gotten worse but the games are still perfectly serviceable if you know what you're getting into.
EDIT: They also have the notorious reputation of *gasp* not being 6. And That's Terrible.

...Let us in...I carefully research every game I hate to know that my hatred, while pure, is not blind.
That said, Final Fantasy 7. The fanbase sucks ass at times, but people blame it for angsty cloud. Thats false. Blame Advent Children for that mess.
Same as Kingdom Hearts. Good game series (most of the time) but with a fanbase that makes you want to scream.
Of the games I own: Thief 3. There are some design choices with console in mind, but it's not to the degree of Deus Ex Invisible War and the game is still rather enjoyable, even as part of canon.
I would agree that Bio Shock 2 gets too much flak, although I'd have to say that on its own merit it's a pretty competent game. As a Bio Shock sequel, it just didn't live up; I did try playing through and though it does have some neat ideas, it just doesn't feel like Rapture, there doesn't seem to be as many moral shades of gray that made the first so well-regarded and it didn't suck me into the gameplay like the first one did.
Same could be said about sequels in general, that would be competent in their own right, but hated for either innovating nothing, dumbing down or simply not living up to the high bar set up by a predecessor. I acknowledge that the Modern Warfare games are that way for the former (although it doesn't help that the series' publisher is a dick), while Deus Ex: Invisible War and Dragon Age 2 would be for the latter.

I now go by Graf von Tirol.Alpha Protocol. Good story, boss battles that were actually fun (unlike, say, DXHR), a really well thought out character approval system and a ridiculous amount of branching storyline. It's marred by a clunky combat and character system and maps that are pretty linear for what seems like a multipath rpg, but the combat becomes less clunky as you level up (hell I'd say it actually got pretty fun by the end when I'd maxed out the skills I wanted) and the hate directed at the character system was pretty overblown I'd say, considering there were several action rpg hybrids with similar character systems that weren't panned as badly.
Pokemon Gold And Silver are now hated on pretty much all Pokemon boards now that the remakes are out and the nostalgia has shifted to RSE, so I'm going to say their overrhated, as are Pokemon Black And White.
The new Dragon Ball game, Ultimate Tenkaichi, is also overhated for not being Budokai Tenkaichi 3.
And the Call Of Duty series. I'm not a fan, but I'm sick of the mindless hate it gets being everywhere.
I'm seconding the Alpha Protocol, Dragon Age 2, and Modern Warfare sentiments. I'll also throw in the Dynasty Warriors series, which has provided me with oodles of fun.
Support Gravitaz on Kickstarter! If Modern Warfare wasn't fun in some aspects it wouldn't have gotten so many sales. Regardless of the egregriously shitty Real Is Brown excuse against it (seriously what do you expect? Tactical fights at Carnivals, Spaceships and Pandora?), it is a very great game, that appeals to many aspects of different players, and with the headsets muted the online play is fun.
Troper PagePatworx, are you making threads on this topic for all media? This particular issue can be quite touchy for some people so you'd better be prepared to moderate all the discussions.
From reading several major websites, and listening to a few relatively mainstream video game discussions, I think it's safe to say that quite a few video game fans are way too hateful / fearful when it comes to games which are cute, girly, Moe, or Fanservice-driven. Examples include:
- Rhapsody A Musical Adventure (Not a stellar RPG, but gets no respect outside of its small fanbase.)
- Otometeki Koi Kakumei Love Revo (Even though no company ever talked about licensing it, someone still wrote a negative article about it. Did it not meet the writer's standards for Girls Need Role Models?)
- Love Plus (A half dozen Loony Fans ruined it for everyone with their Perverse Sexual Lust. It's only thanks to a few dedicated individuals that we have fan translation patches.)
- Otomedius Excellent (At least this moe/fanservice shooter has been published in English. Going from what some fans say, you'd think this Teen-rated game was more obscene than Mature-rated games like God of War, Mass Effect, or Heavy Rain.)
- Sakura Wars 5 (I enjoyed it, though I had a number of complaints. Still, my opinion was much more positive than Player One Podcast's opinion.)
Also, there are a number of people in the Visual Novel scene who seem threatened by anything written in English, and who take far too much time and effort to tear fellow fans' works down.
Seconding or Thirding or whatever the Call Of Duty franchise. It gets so much hate it's ridiculous. Look up any Battlefield trailer or gameplay video on Youtube. One of the top comments will be bitching about COD in some way.
It doesn't even have to be about a competing game. I'm watching walkthrough vids for a DBZ game and there is bitching about COD.
Sonic Heroes and Shadow The Hedgehog.
To this day, I still don't get what the problem with Heroes is supposed to be. the gameplay was solid, the levels were fun, and the dialogue was not that bad, aside from one line.
As for Shadow, it definitely took a few steps in the wrong direction, but it still had some great levels, the gameplay worked, the final boss was good, and at least it is nowhere near as bad as what came next.
I have a message from another time...I remember Sonic Heroes' main gameplay problem for me being trial and error gameplay with too many bottomless holes, particularly during the grinding and casino ball sequences.
That said, I thought it had a lot of fun ideas.

...Well, I remember a lot of deaths from a ton of enemies, or misjudging Flight time, but...
Granted, it's been some time since I played, but I remember it being tons of fun, when I wasn't Emerald-hunting.
I have a message from another time...
What video game do you think get's more hate than it deserves?
