All Purpose Yu-Gi-Oh! Fanfiction Thread.

Hey, there's this fic I remember from forever and a half ago with the premise being that it was an AU where Gozoboro had just adopted Seto, and Mokuba was adopted by a different family. Anyone know of the fic I'm talking about?

Not a clue. Then again, I only look up Yu Gi Oh fanfics very infrequently, largely because of the generally subpar writing quality but also because way too many of them are about premises that are uninteresting for me.

Does anyone know of good GX fanfics that break with the "only Obelisk Blue houses female students" thing? If you ask me, the way I'd have it is as follows:

• All dorms accept female students.
• The Obelisk Blue girls' dorm is in a completely separate building from the boys' dorm.
• The Ra Yellow dorm is divided into separate sex-specific sections within the same building.
• The Osiris Red dorm is too underfunded to separate boys and girls in any way. As an unintended result of that, the infamously shoddy quality of the dorm and the first batch of Osiris Red male students having an unusually high proportion of perverted assholes, practically every girl who got assigned to Osiris Red during the first couple of years didn't last even a whole term before she dropped out, which ultimately gave Osiris Red such bad rep that even after the offenders were removed and the enrollment process reformed to filter out such unsavory types, female applicants who find themselves failing to qualify for Ra Yellow or Obelisk Blue would simply cancel their applications and try their luck elsewhere.

Re: the Hayate Yagami idea I posed a few pages back: given that she almost became a Human Popsicle, would it be particularly perverse or otherwise a joke in bad taste if she used an Ice Barrier variant deck?

Basically, it would start out as a bit of a troll-y Stone Wall deck that bogs down her opponents' offense, before gradually revealing itself as a Mighty Glacier that, once fully unleashed, is very difficult to stop.

The intent is that her preferred style is In-Universe considered Difficult, but Awesome, since she needs a good number of turns to really set up and build momentum; her main weakness, then, would be duelists with lots of counters for spell and trap effects.

I see. How good is A New Duelist Legend as a story, incidentally?

It's an alternate telling of season 1 with OC characters, but the plot is pretty fun once you get into it. Unfortunately the fic hasn't updated since 2009.

Oh. That's a shame.

How far did it get? I'm kinda interested now.

You know, I'd love to see a fic that does something similar to a New Duelist Legend (which I might check out despite it never being finished) but for the original Yugioh and using cards from the later series as well.

So we'd have Synchro, XYZs, and Pendulum.

I'm leaving out Link monsters because of the rules they use that kinda make it hard to summon other types of monsters.

The point is, it'd be fascinating to see how all those different cards would interact with the classic series.

On the one hand, it could be interesting.

On the other hand, given the power creep of the later seasons in which those cards are introduced, I feel like the classic heroes would be at a major disadvantage unless they were able to upgrade their decks with such things in mind.

Yeah. You'd probably have to go full alternate universe, or have them already using more modern cards alongside their earlier ones (if possible).

I personally believe that if the cards of later seasons had existed in the original series, Yugi would probably use Pendulum myself. I always saw him as something of an all rounder who used all kinds of cards.

I actually haven't watched any of the anime past GX, and I only sort of have a grasp of how Synchro and Xyz work due to some internet friends of mine getting me back into the game.

I don't know shit about what Pendulum is or how it works.

Links completely change the basic rules of the game, so... yeah.

Like, they make it sort of matter which zone you put a monster in, because the cards have arrows on them that point to other monsters. It's pretty crazy.

Yeah. Link summoning doesn't really splash well with other styles, and the game is apparently rather centralized on it now.

Pendulum was kinda the opposite: it could work with all the other summoning styles pretty well (although I'm basing that on the anime and not the game, so I can't say how well it worked with the card games).

Looking for some good suggestions for Yugioh stories.

I'm good for original universe mostly, with a god variety of duels and card archetypes (for whatever flaws it had, Arc V really got me into seeing how Fusion, Synchro, and XYZ all interact with each other, and maybe toss in Pendulum as well).

Something that's finished would also be good.

I'm looking for a manga-based fic, i think it was on AO 3, where Yami Bakura's plan to pretend to be Yugi's friend ended up with them actually becoming friends. i think it was a really long oneshot.

I'm pretty sure it was deleted though :(

About 5 YGO fanfic people on fanfiction.net that I follow are leaving for archiveofourown.org and won't update the FF.NET versions of their stories anymore :( I like AO 3 and all but it has so many explicit fics and tags it's kinda exhausting to look for things XD;

The good news is they aren't deleting their stories/accounts, at least; they're just not updating them there.

The AO3 Savior browser extension is your friend. You can’t block things by rating, unfortunately, but you can block specific tags, authors, and words from summaries.

I wrote in a post above that I was looking for fan fiction (preferably original) with wide variety of duels using as many summoning styles and archetypes as possible. While I left out Links before, I'm putting them back in now if it's even possible to do so.

I wouldn't mind working in some of the anime original duelling styles as well (so Action Duels, Riding/Turbo Duels, and Speed Duels if possible). And of course plenty of female characters duelling each other considering it doesn't happen that much in many of the main series.

When you write duels, do you ever use the real game's 8000 life point count or do you stick to the anime's 4000 life point count?

I just want to drop Ten Thousand Year Elegy off here. It’s a DM/Zelda crossover and it’s way better than the kinda odd crossover mix makes it sound. The characterization and dialogue are highlights. There’s a well-written OC there, too - she has a lot of personality and fits into the group really well.

I’m not sure how many people’s cup of tea it would be, but it seemed worth mentioning anyway. I’m enjoying it a lot.

x2 All the fanfics I've ever written used the 8000 LP format, mostly because I wrote them during the time that the card effects in the anime and IRL were very inconsistent.
