Separate by gender?: Chick Magnet

I found this trope proposal in YKTTW, and some users are criticizing it on the basis of being a gender-flipped Chick Magnet. I think, however, that there are different implications to being a guy who several girls want than being a girl who several guys want, if only for the stereotypes, regardless of however much truth to them there may or may not be.

So, if we are to keep the same article for both, I think that would warrant drastic changes to the description, if not a rename. If, however, we are to have separate articles, then perhaps the Dude Magnet redirect should be removed, the examples moved to that new YKTTW, and perhaps the YKTTW's title changed as well.

Bumping because I feel this ought to be addressed while that YKTTW is running.

Also, I sent a PM to tustin2121 about the YKTTW and he/she says it was since discarded, because he/she feels Chick Magnet already covers it. I said "to each their own" but as is probably already obvious from this thread I very much disagree.

I would like to add that I think Dude Magnet and Chick Magnet should be separate trope pages. The implications are different for either gender: generally a dude magnet doesn't have the image of guys "glomping" girls, but rather guys secretly pining for the girl and that pining making plot happen (see Layton 3 for my example and the reason I started the YKTTW linked to above in the first place).

That, and a guy who several girls want is more often considered lucky, whereas a girl who several guys want is more likely to be expected to be grossed out by them.

Trope's still the same, reaction is just Different for Girls, just give the two halves separate descriptions

More importantly is the girls section a mix of Chick Magnet and Dude Magnet? it could use some grouping maybe:

Reaction being different is generally what causes us to split tropes into Spear and Distaff counterparts.

[up] Nothing. Hello Nurse even says it's the Distaff Counterpart to Chick Magnet.

I see, the female half was already covered between Hello Nurse and Even the Girls Want Her.

Should we cut the female examples and use Dude Magnet as a redirect to Hello Nurse?

Hello Nurse has it's own problems of the name not actually conveying the meaning of the trope, and being easily confusable for Hospital Hottie. I suggest following this troper's suggestion, and rename Hello Nurse to Dude Magnet, and retain Hello Nurse as a redirect for a month or two to see if it gets more external wicks; if not, switch it to Hospital Hottie.

I thought Hello Nurse was "everyone's jaw drops to the floor when she walks into the room" whereas a Dude Magnet is "all the guys try to get into a relationship with her." There is a difference. A Dude Magnet doesn't even necessarily have to be attractive, and people might not actually try to get into a relationship with a Hello Nurse (Attractiveness Isolation, perhaps, or maybe she's already with a really powerful Big Bad who would kill you if you so much as flirted with her).

If that's the case, then we really need a proper male counterpart to Hello Nurse; according to your explanation, Chick Magnet is Dude Magnet's opposite, not Hello Nurse's.

Both the title and the second paragraph seems to indicate that it's gender-neutral.

It's gender neutral-ish. Spear and Distaff don't tend to be identical. They play out in different ways. One can have examples from the opposite gender. Hello Nurse is almost always men's reaction to women. Eating the Eye Candy is more like 80% women, 20% men. Enough that you can't call it Always Female, but it's definitely tilted.

When I said Spear Counterpart to Hello Nurse, I meant an actual character type, not a character-reaction trope.

Eating the Eye Candy's female dominant examples are likely from when it started life as Female Gaze.

... apparently, there is quite a mess of attraction tropes whose definition is uncertain.

Well, it's a good thing I made this thread, as it helped call attention to that. Should I make a YKTTW for a distaff counterpart to Chick Magnet, or wait until the definitions of the various tropes mentioned in this thread are clarified? o.o

Wait, seriously. Starting new threads part way through old ones just makes a huge mess and nothing ever gets done.

[up] I mean we are having a conversation in one thread, splitting of tangents guarantees that nothing will be done with either the main trope or it's tangent.

[up] Ah, you mean several discussions in one thread. I wasn't sure whether you were referring to that or to literally a new thread running at the same time.

Should I create separate threads from this one, for stuff like Eating the Eye Candy or Hello Nurse? (Remember, my YKTTW idea is relevant to this thread, as the decision to make this thread was based on a YKTTW I saw.)
