The Goal of Your Work

I'll start: Mine would be shoving as many tropes as humanly possible. My first chapter alone already contains comething like Helicopter Blender, Razor Wind, Grenade Laucnher, and Incendiary Exponent.

I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.

My goal in everything I write is to present something that has never been seen before. I often try to create protagonists that have never been tried. I like to play tropes in new and unexplored ways.

In my superhero series, my protagonist is a child with both parents living. Not only that, but the parents are both competent and are in on his secret. I plan on playing with a bunch of different super hero tropes, either averting them hard, or playing them seriously straight.

My first goal is to tell a good story, of course, but I also seek to absolutely avert Fantasy Counterpart Culture in my Worldbuilding, whilst still being reasonably realistic. For the Uelane, whose nation most of the story takes place in, I've researched various European, Asian, African and Native American cultures seeking inspiration, as well as using Labyrinth, Zeno Clash and Dr Seuss for ideas on how to make them have that extra unearthly flavor.

I like to experiment. I write stories to push boundaries; both my writing abilities and striving for something beyond the ordinary. Most of all, I hope to make a reader smile, or cry and giggle — sharing the contents of my imagination to theirs.

The hell if I know. I have general goals, but no overall one.

The display of how much others will hate and desire to eliminate someone if that person is someone with high standards that also devotes himself into trying to create an environment where he can be content.

Well, that's the longest one's goal, anyway. To show someone's rough times trying to get what he wants, for a few moments enjoying the personal heaven he finally creates, just to also display the worst consequences of trying to be too happy.

Then there's the other one, which has the goal of entertaining those who like virtually flawless Lighter and Softer settings.

If people learned from their mistakes, there wouldn't be this thing called bad habits.

Doing something unique.

Take an old thing I love and make it new, usually.

My goal is to tell immersive stories that make people laugh, cry, tense up, relax, and finish the book thinking, "Gee, are there any more?"

To deconstruct my chosen subject, and their world. To avert things commonly seen, and to make the reader really think about what's being presented. Lastly, to analyze and pick apart that which I love or find interesting to expose both its flaws and its merits as equally as possible. Oh, and to write something that satisfies me, largely regardless of an audience (then again, I don't really have one...)

And, like others, to tell a story - even if no one reads it, it is being told, and that is enough.

To produce something that doesn't make me wince and/or cry in pain.

Currently my goal is to improve, most of the stuff I write it's experimental, my main goal is to someday (which I do not plan on leaving as "someday") go pro.

Also, I want to be able to write something that's completely void of any kind of drama/angts but that's still interesting to read, and I don't mean something like a comedy, I mean something as light-hearted as possible that will make you smile... not even laugh, just smile.

I'm very much like QQQQQ, except I want the reader to feel immersed in my stories. There are so many things I want you to experience the beautiful,*

the ugly,*

^{Wars, famine, storms, strife, et cetera.}

and the people living their lives amongst all this.

I tend to feel overwhelmed when my imagination creates something, because there is no words that could describe exactly what I am seeing. However I still feel a desire to welcome you... to my world.

Has ADD, plays World of Tanks, thinks up crazy ideas like children making spaceships for Hitler. Occasionally writes them down.

Step One: Land the Exodar. Tell a damn good quality story above all else.

Step Two: Actually complete the entire 'verse and trilogy.

Step Three: Defeat Legion and go home. Achieve Trope Overdosed status.

Step Four (desirable but not absolutely necessary, I have contingencies ya know): PROFIT!!! aka achieve success in all measures such as being a best seller, adapted into profitable media and generally remarked as something damn good.

My only goal in anything I write is to entertain. I've really never had, nor do I ever intend to have, any further agenda.

I don't write to further my world view, I don't write to become a better writer, I don't write to try to be better than anyone else (except for Arthur Doyle. I will totally surpass him as a writer. Time's gonna tell on that...), and I don't write to make some kind of unique artistic statement. Nothing I write has a deeper meaning. There are no allegories, no hidden messages, no one is Jesus in Purgatory. I don't think that's how writing should be.

There's nothing new under the sun so trying to do something that's never been done before is doomed to failure anyway. CS Lewis said, "Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth (without caring twopence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it." I've always found that statement to be true.

I don't try to cram in tropes just for the sake of cramming in tropes. I don't see a reason in that. A wise man once said (paraphrased), "Tropes for tropes' sake is an empty phrase." I agree. I don't even intentionally invoke or lampshade tropes. Sometimes when I'm planning, I'll write or think the names of tropes as they might apply to the story just to save space on the paper or whatever (I tend to write a lot of hard copy notes about my stories), but I don't sit down at any given point and just figure out what tropes are present. I think if I did it'd probably take the fun out of the writing process for me and my writing process is already slow enough without me getting disillusioned. Reducing everything to a formula ruins it. Over analyzing messes it up.

There's no purpose beyond entertainment for me. I don't see a reason to write unless it's to make people smile.

I'm doing my job right if people enjoy it. That's all I aim for. That's all I want.

Pretty simple. When I thought of some awesome idea other fictions could have done but haven't I make a place for it.

To entertain myself by writing something I would like to read, but haven't seen out there. And really, that's it.

Audiences are a secondary concern, mainly because I can't take criticism very well.

With Hello!, I aim to (co-)write a comic that is genuinely surrealistic in its comedy rather than simply Dadaistic.

With the as-of-yet untitled "epic thingy," I'd like to make a heroic dark fantasy that draws upon some of the more obscure or recent authors of the Cosmic Horror Story *

and the pioneers of stream-of-consciousness *

rather than the more obvious fantasy and horror precursors while still using the genre's tropes and principles to good effect and without too much irony or pretence.

Ah, wait. You reminded me; my goal is to finish the story because I have problems with no finishing stories that I start. It really means something when I do finish; only the special ones get the honor.

To write something I would want to read. Sometimes I struggle with that, sometimes I enjoy reading my own work. I write under the belief that by putting ideas on paper I (a) can sift the good ones from the bad ones, (b) increase my idea count and (c) get experience in writing/drawing.

And I don't keep a notebook or anything. I feel like I need to actually "produce" something (that is, a comic) to get a feel for whether I like it or not.

This is as far as I can tell the secret to writing.
