Phantasm, Foam, and Shadow

Welcome to the Profound Touhou Original Character Compendium! It's completley different from the old Touhou Original Character Compendium, because it has a "Profound" in front of it. Regardless, this is the place for the creation and discussion of Troper-made characters for the video game series Touhou Project!

Now, before we get the ball rolling, let's have an explanation of the process used here on the POCC.

The Queue

Unfortunatley, If everyone just throws their OC's into the fray, you get too much of a rush of toons for any one character to get any meaningful discussion. So, a system for floodgating the entries must be in effect, lest the thread get overstimulated. The old OCC had a rigidly stuctured polling system that stagnated discussion, so the most profound change in the POCC is a "liquification" of the poll system, designed to be a bit more freeform and not bottleneck the thread behind a poll.

First, every troper who enters has a queue that you can put characters into. To put a toon in your queue, simply write a short description (3 sentences long is a good rule of thumb, though by no means a hard limit) about your character. The caveat: you can only have 3 toons in your queue at any one time.

If you attempt to enter something to your queue when you already have 3 entries, it will not be put in the queue. However, I will note it's location, and if a vacancy pops up (by either removing or publishing an entry - see below) I will put the excess entry in automatically.

once in the queue, other tropers can give a character interests. Interests are points that you can give to other people's entries. You can give up to 5 interests to any one toon, and can change the amounts of interests given at any time, but be discerning! We don't want to meet up with constant tiebreakers. Don't be afraid to say, "I like character Y a lot more than character X, I'm going to give 4 interests to Y and only 2 to X". We're mature people, we can handle it - right? And by the way, you can't give any interests to your own entries.

You can remove a queue entry at any time. However, if you remove an entry, then put it back later, it will reset to 0 interests, regardless of how many it had accumulated before it was removed.

Publishing

So, approximately every Wednesday and Saturday, I'll tally up the accumulated interests of every entry in the queue, and the entry with the most interests (in the event of a tie, a die roll will determine the winner) will get permission to be published. To publish a character, simply write an exended description of your toon. Some highlights to think about when publishing:

  • Physical appearance: What your toon looks like! Especially important for those who lack drawing skills. If you have drawing skills, a picture would be even better!
  • Abilities: What can your toon do? Is he/she (but usually she) a simple stage 1 boss to be brushed aside, or something a bit more formadible? If your character is meant to appear in an actual game, spellcard patters should be a consideration as well.
  • Personality: Arguably the most important aspect of a character. Describing who your toon is should go without saying.
  • Story: Why does your character do what they do? Where do they live? What is their relationships with other characters?
  • Tropes Associated with your Character: This is TV Tropes, after all. You have a veritable cournocopia of shorthand at your disposal that can be very handy in describing a character. This is not at all necessary, but it's something to consider.

Once you publish a toon, they are removed from the queue, opening a spot for you to put another toon in.

Note: All toons who won polls back in the old system are elligible for pubishing immediatley. Any toons who were "published" in the old system will have to be "republished" here.

The Rundown

Here is a list of every Troper who has made an entry to the POCC. It includes links to the publishing post of any toon they

have published, as well as their entire queue, with short descriptions included and a count of how many interests that entry

has, so that one can view all queue entries without sifting through the entire thread. Also present are "homecoming queens", toons who won polls in the old thread who still need to be re-published here. I'm handling those, mostly.

Jol'Bihro
A Shaman with Spirit

The stage 3 Boss of Expedition of Xenic Dream. An elderly shaman from a tribal race of aliens, he used to be an incident resolver back in the day, but is now retired. Shakes himself out of retirement after EoXD and attempts to tutor Reimu on the finer aspects of being an incident resolver (Mainly "Be less apathetic about the world around you"), which is an underlying plot occuring througout the series.

Interests: 0

Saigora [last name undecided]
Straight as an Arrow, Sly as a Spider

The stage 5 Boss of Expedition of Xenic Dream. Unlike most stage 5 bosses, her allegiance to the stage 6 boss is a temporary one, and she very much has her own agenda. What that agenda is, is anyone's guess...

Interests: 3

Thunderbird
The Skies' Mighty Roar

"Now that's a language I like to speak!" (Proceeds to hold a conversation solely via explosions)

A Dragon-like Youkai with the power to control Lightning and Thunder. Being about human-sized makes him extremley small compared to the creatures he resembles, so he attempts to make up for his runty stature with his... energy. Appears as the midboss for Stage 4 and the EX stage of EoXD, and afterword pops up in the multiplayer games.

Maggey Carroll

Black Winged, Black Hearted Bird

"All Gensokyo's secrets... what are yours? Reveal them to me and I'll show you the dark truth of this Eastern Wonderland!"

A tengu, specifically a Black billed Magpie, and Stage 3 boss. She runs the Noire, a supposedly "underground" newspaper with various seedy information. She was offically banished from Tengu society for grievances against them such as complete information theft. Her theme is "Nobody Listens to an Injured Bird".

Evangeline Roth

Tonight's Entertainment

"Cake or death?"

A boss in Beloved Witches' Rondo, she's a witch who specializes in "fun" magic, especially those related to food. Other witches don't take her seriously because of this, but she's a credible threat. She considers herself a bit of a trickster and others think she's a bit of a bitch, but she just loves to entertain. Her theme song is "The Golden Butterfly's Fun Never Ends"

"This is just like origami!"

An brilliant scholar from the human village. She has the ability to bend space, and her spellcards are based on Alien Geometries. She's technically a low-level youkai exterminator, but only when Keine-sensei isn't available to protect the village, and usually just against minor threats.

The Youkai of Will

"The results are pre-determined by me, so why even try?"

Shujiko is a youkai that possesses phenomenal will power. If she wanted, she could forego injuries to fight well past her body's normal limits. Unfortunately, this clashes with Shujiko's love of a fair fight, with no guaranteed victory. After a life time of this, she is pretty depressed.

Cyndy Burspark

The Dragon Princess

As her title implies, Cyndy is a dragonic being. The 'princess' part was added because it inspires the image of a beautiful or pretty woman, which helps deal with her deep insecurities about her appearance. Always hidden behind a mask, hood, and several layers of clothing, no one has ever seen her face. Her dragonic blood makes her a naturally resilient being, and an excellent fire-based magic user, but Cyndy's attempts to keep her face hidden prevents her from unleashing her full power upon anyone.

The Sound out of Space

"ARGH"

Some sort of... well, it's definitely not a youkai. Most people describe it as a goat/bat thing. It is extremely loud whenever it makes a noise - which is often, since its sonar capabilities are far greater than, uh, what counts for normal bats in Gensokyo. Does not understand why humans/youkai yell at him for being too loud. A self-described missionary for some sort of Buddhist sect... IN SPACE! As before, his power is being fucking good at sonar.

Interests: 6

Momoi Ayumi

The Great Huntress

"One game, one bullet."

A strange woman from another dimension. Not the Outside, not the Moon... but, anyway. Tall, a swimmer's build, extremely long blue hair (even when tied up and stuffed under her pith helmet). She's apparently quiet and reserved, but after a few seconds of conversation, will begin to warm up nicely. People who talk with her long enough find her lively and rather intelligent, if somewhat lacking in wittiness itself.Carries a gigantic rifle that she uses to hunt dangerous game in Gensokyo. The kappa estimate it's more advanced than the Lunarian tech they've been analyzing, and uses a giant caliber. It's a miracle she doesn't dislocate her shoulder every time she fires it. She tends to hunt down animals that have caused fatalities amongst youkai and/or humans. She will, for a small price, be perfectly willing to assassinate dangerous criminals or youkai that actually eat humans - which, for Gensokyo, are both rather rare.

Has completely refused to play by regular spellcard rules: instead of the usual fire-and-dodge More Dakka spread in beautiful patterns, utilized by the rest of Gensokyo, she, in her own words, prefers "simple, fast beauty". firing one massive-but-beautiful bullet from her rifle, requiring more reflexes to dodge than luck. One of the few who talks to both humans and youkai. Attempts to mock racists from either species.

Interests: 3

Bingo Kukuxmushu

The Belligerent Acid

"Gensokyo is what you get when you get a drunken clown with a fetish for colored orbs flying about and an even more unhealthy fetish for 'teh hott loli', tell him to design the bastard child of Feudal Japan and LSD, make them all violent and stupid (more so than an oni on steroids and their already small brains surgically extracted) and more shooty than a Gatling manned by Reimu's 'I MUST NUKE EVERYTHING' face."

A rather special satori. (Besides Koishi, that is.) Besides being one of the oldest beings around (still far below Eirin and Yukari, though), he's also spent a great amount of time on the outside world, and as such, is the one youkai go to when they can't interrogate the latest newcomer hiding in the Human Village and want information on what to do.That is, if youkai were willing to go to him. Not only does he have a satori's habit of blurting out other people's thoughts, it's exacerabated by the fact he's got quite the tongue on him. Most of his conversation will be him picking apart your plans, mocking your appearance, and generally tearing apart everything he can... verbally. Wears a fedora and has an odd accent, even for Gensokyo. His third eye appears to be blank. His power, as a result, is the ability to create new thoughts and ideas in others. Too bad they're all negative.

POCC works

In the process of creating all these characters we've been creating stories and games for these characters to appear in. Here is a list of all of our stories/series, with descriptions and links to characters associated with that story.

XionGaTaosenai's Touhou Project
A series of fangames that is effectivley a localisation of Touhou injected with unchecked creative ambition. Will consist of 10 games:
  • #1, Expedition of Xenic Dream: Reimu and Marisa have to resolve an incident in an alien world called Shinkyou (秦郷), where a prized magical jewel has been stolen.
  • #2: The Scarlet Devil Mansion is a very large place, even bigger on the inside than on the outside, and it's inhabited by far more than the 5 girls we've seen so far. In fact, it's a veritable city of Youkai in there! This game follows the exploits of the familiar SDM cast as they work to stop a criminal uprising in the Mansion.
  • #3: I don't know much about what happens in this game, I simply know that Sakuya and some shaman from EoXD join Reimu and Marisa as playable characters, The plot is ultimately a Moriya Shrine Conspiracy, and Alice is involved somehow.
  • #4, Phantasmogoria of Sunrise Soul: It's a Phantasmogoria game. Someone is riling up the phantoms, and everyone blames Yuyuko.
  • #5: This game will feature the team-up mechanic introduced in IN. follows up PoSS, having whoever you chose finding the real culprit. Neither of these games have any connection to TD, except for a strange feeling of Deja Vu.
  • #6: A Mystical Chain-esqe game, with a playable cast of a gaggle of major characters that aren't Reimu or Marisa... and some random Stage 1 boss thrown in for kicks (and funny dialouge when paired with Yuyuko). Features alternate paths & storylines depending on which combination of characters you choose.
  • #7: Reimu, Marisa, Sakuya, and Sanae are the playable characters. That's really all I can say about it.
  • #8: Fighting Game!
  • #9: Has the partner mechanic from SA, right down to the same character choices (though the shottypes will be heavily modified). Probably will not take place underground like SA.
  • #10: Photography Game. A pair of research probes join Aya as playable characters.

The games are meant to bring in all the major characters and recreate the contexts of all the major memes (or at least those that originated in the games themselves), while using tangents and puns that make sense in english, providing an avenue to Touhou fandom that requires less Japanophilia.

Will also include a handful of supplementary manga.

Lower Youkai Scociety
Pretty much any character in the games is relativley high on the totem pole of power. But there are dozens, or even hundreds, of Youkai who rank lower than even Rumia, who would never be able to make it in a real girl's game. As a matter of fact, some of them may even be male (I know, blasphemous). So, Here are the stories for the little guys. The non-action guys. The ordinary people, for a certian degree of ordinary. This seems to be the most popular work for putting OCs into, and many Tropers here are very passionate about it.

Themed queues

Sometimes, you need a character. You need a character for some role, some purpose, and can't come up with an idea. What to do? Why, tap into the limitless creative potential of your peers to do all the work for you!

-Themed queues are not fully implemented yet, and probably will not be for a while. I'll have this operational eventually - for now, I just wanted the spot to be here so that when I do introduce them, they'll have a spot close to the OP.-

And Finally, let's get the ball rolling with one of my own characters!

Amber
An Agressive, Aimless Alien

(Picture sketched by Fawriel, colored my me)

Amber is a Youkai based on a creature called a Daggerwrist from a speculative documentary called "Alien Planet". Her power is "Manipulation of Tree Sap". She is the stage 1 boss of Expedition of Xenic Dream, where she attacks the heroines (or is attacked by them) for no apparent reason, and later appears as a playable character in the 6th game of my series, where she's been driven out of her territory by rival daggerwrists and is seeking new territories in Gensokyo proper.

The big reason I made Touhou Characters based on bizzare aliens was as a visual design challenge. I greatly admire the visual aspects of characters like Nitori & Utsuho, who have that classic Touhou Cute Girl image while still retaining the aspects of their monstrous sides, and sought to do something similar with Amber. The characteristic dagger-like forelimbs extend out of her wrists, and the detatching-lower jaw thing is nestled inside her mouth. The cheap way to do it would be to simply have it replace her tounge, but I went a step further, and had it replace not only the tounge, but the lower set of teeth as well, so she only has the upper row of "human" teeth. The leathery gliding membranes are there, but don't attach any farther down than her mid torso, so that if she opens her arms wide, it looks like she has rectangle-shaped wings. There are also bioluminescent patches on the gliding membranes. Just like a daggerwrist, she has no eyes, or even eye sockets, but she keeps it hidden via a grey blindfold she wears where eyes would be. Unlike a daggerwrist, she has hair, black hair down to her shoulders that has an unkempt, feral look to it. She has the back spines, but not the tail. She wears thick brown cloth, similar to the dirty peasant's garb often seen in movies, with a pair of brown boots. Unlike most skirted Touhou Characters, she wears pants.

She lacks very much personality, and usually acts on instinct instead of thinking things through. She is basically just an animal.

Masha Kinoko (Маша 奇野小) Whimsical Mushroom of the Forest

A mushroom-youkai, specifically a species that was already magically-infused by nature, she reacts explosively to surprise and startlement, due to close encounters with Yukari and Mima and a kidnapping before she was even a day old. Formerly prone to comical freakouts, she's now generally level-headed, if a bit flighty, and also has no problem with Gensokyo's more pugilistic nature.

Bruce - The Hungry Spirit

Pleased to meet you. I'm a motherfucking shark ghost.

One of the spirits that wound up in Gensokyo during the same time as Ten Desires, and a manifestation of hunger. He has no idea what is going on, why there are mikos attacking him, and why he's there - and is tired of having to write up "spell cards" every time someone wants to hurt him for no particular reason. Writing with fins is kinda hard, y'know? Trying to get acclimated to Gensokyo, since he's apparently from Australia. Has the power to control hunger in anyone.

—-

Lalia - The Sound out of Space

ARGH

Some sort of... well, it's definitely not a youkai. Most people describe it as a goat/bat thing. It is extremely loud whenever it makes a noise - which is often, since its sonar capabilities are far greater than, uh, what counts for normal bats in Gensokyo. Does not understand why humans/youkai yell at him for being too loud. A self-described missionary for some sort of Buddhist sect... IN SPACE! As before, his power is being fucking good at sonar.

—-

Padre - Guard of the Undead

Stars...

In a clearing far north of Misty Lake, there's a graveyard that's so old, all of its tombstones are now just craggled old fingers rising out of the Earth. Even Yukari doesn't know who was buried here.

Anyone who stumbles upon it will be confronted by this hulking monstrosity - the sight of him alone is enough to drive away even the bravest youkai. If, for any reason, a person didn't flee at the sight of him, he will firmly tell the trespasser to leave. (The voice alone would make little children cry and gain PTSD for life.) If they were insane/drunk enough to not comply? Well, a fairy said the monster had two massive arms. One was covered in a mass of writhing, sharp tentacles, and the other a heavy spiked metal thing of sorts. God help anyone who accidentally takes anything from the graveyard. Appears to have an interest in astronomy.

Has the power to command dead corpses.

I would, however, like to recommend that when republishing a writeup of a character in the old thread, be sure to incorporate tweaks and/or additions that were brought up during that character's discussion. We wouldn't want to end up repeating ourselves.

That said, I'm thinking of reposting Yukine Genshi's writeup for discussion. And because the twelve-step monk needs three more spellcards, if I recall.

Hikari - Tropical Spirit

A youkai with control over weather. Her sunny disposition means she tends to prefer summer and tropical weather, mainly controlling clouds, rain, and sun. She can limit her weather control to specific areas or extend it throughout Gensokyo, though due to being relatively laid-back, she prefers the former. Her home is a lake in Gensokyo, and she uses her powers to maintain a tropical climate around the area. She watches over rain-fairies much like Letty watches over ice fairies. She is an extremely cheerful youkai, likes fighting for fun, and loves ice cream.

Suketchi[1] - The Artist of Life

A being born from art, she is able to create art in any medium she desires. Drawing, writing, danmaku, sculpting; she's amazing at many things. Unfortunately, she's a lonely person, and tries to do whatever it takes to get new friends. So, one day as she was looking through some books from the outside world, she happened upon a magazine detailing what she believed to be a sure-fire way to make friends. This technique involved wearing strange clothes and being kind of a prick to everyone, but no one tells her that this just drives people away. She just tries so hard. At being a prick.

She's also known to have quite the singing voice, but ever since her makeover, she's deemed singing to be "too mainstream."

Kyuuki[2] - The Muse With 1000 Talents

The true form (and name) of Suketchi. She has dropped the act and has revealed her true form as a Muse, a mythical creature who gives artistic inspiration to aspiring artists. With her true light shown, she drops the act and shows her real power: the ability to bring art to life. Any drawing she makes becomes real, any story she tells flashes before the listener's eyes, any song she sings is filled with life.

She doesn't just create art, she is art.

So, I made queue entries (straight to the queue - scroll up), and updated the queue. Notice how the current leader has her interests in green, while the others are red. In the case of a tie, all entries tying for the top place will be in green (as evidenced by the beginning, when no one had any interests, so they were all green.)

I'll throw around my own interests later. Prolly sometime tomorrow. Also, feel free to say a few words about any of these queue entries, or even little Amber! Everyone seems to be treating this like a formal poll, where you enter, vote, and do little else, which I thought we had agreed was bad.

Personally, I just don't have anything more to say about Amber, unless someone brings up something specific. Sorry, dude.

Now, I believe I promised I'd repost Yukine's profile in this thread, hopefully it'll add another opportunity to spark up discussion. In particular, I believe I'm still missing three more styles of danmaku...

This is mostly copied from the old profile. With maybe a bit of stuff from the discussion added in.

Yukine Genshi (現支 雪猫)
The Twelve-Step Monk

"You'll have no chance of getting past me if you can't keep up!"

Overview

Yukine is a half-youkai monk who practices the "Twelve Forms", which is actually an entire set of twelve different styles, each corresponding to a particular earthly branch in Chinese astrology. While there are many masters of each individual style, and many of them being learned in a handful of different forms, it is rare for an individual to pursue all twelve, and anyone attempting to do so will need almost superhuman levels of dedication. The last known individual to have done so lived several hundred years in the past.

Undoubtedly, to have mastered the Twelve Forms, Yukine has the extreme level of dedication necessary. But knowledge of twelve different styles are useless, if one does not apply each of them when the situation requires it. Yukine is at once persistent and flexible: Once she sets herself to a task or a goal, she will use any means at her disposal to make sure it is accomplished.

Whereabouts

Some kind of passage (or possibly a gate) that she was hired/assigned to guard, which the player character now needs to pass through.

The rest of this section intentionally left blank, so we can pretty much put her in any sort of plot and just fill in the details as we go along.

Appearance

White past-the-shoulder-length hair with red-orange highlights in the front, tied in a ponytail at the base of her neck. Wears a white hachimaki on her head with "determination" (or something like that) in kanji written on it. Wears bandages on her right forearm. Generally seen in monk's robes (you know, the kind you'd expect from a D&D monk, or something).

Spellcards

I haven't decided on how to split up each sign into three groups of four (you know, for three protagonists), but I am sure about one thing: any character with homing shots should very definitely not be given the Snake Sign, for obvious reasons (see below). And to a lesser degree, the Hare Sign.

Also, there are some that don't have either E/N or H/L versions. Either I'm not sure how to make a good variation on that pattern, or I just can't think of a good name.

  • Rat Sign
    • "Vermin Swarm" (E/N) — short vertical lasers fall at varying speeds all over the screen. Straightforward dodging, for the most part.
    • "Vermin Rush" (H/L) — slightly faster lasers, and instead of straight down, some of them fall at a slight angle, to the left or to the right.
  • Ox Sign
    • "Boulder Stance" (E/N) / "Strength of the Mountain" (H/L) — a survival spellcard. Yukine throws boulders at you with increasing pace. She also makes the ground shake, so watch out for falling rocks.
  • Tiger Sign
    • "Fearful Symmetry" (H/L) — Yukine uses giant tiger paws (not unlike Unzan's fists, or Murasa's anchors) in a swiping motion down and across the screen. If you're not in a safe spot, you're dead for sure.
  • Hare Sign
    • "Carefree Ballerina" (E/N) / "Lucky Rabbit's Dance" (H/L) — Yukine summons a couple of familiars that scatter flower petals all over. What makes this challenging is that Yukine keeps hopping around, avoiding you.
  • Dragon Sign
    • "Ceremonial Procession" (H/L) — Yukine moves in a twisting path all across the field, trailed by large red bullets (so she looks kind of like a dragon). She scatters danmaku as she moves about, so watch out.
  • Snake Sign
  • Horse Sign
  • Sheep Sign
    • "Counting Sheep" (E/N) / "The Flock Protecting the Shepherd" (H/L) — Yukine stands back and summons wave after wave of attacking familiars. They keep shooting at you (infrequently) until they disappear past the bottom of the screen, or until killed.
  • Monkey Sign
  • Rooster Sign
    • "Feathered Fan" (E/N) — Yukine throws out five feathers in a wide arc, each of which splits into five, and each of those splits one more time. The final split is aimed.
    • "Pride and Plumage" (H/L) — same, but any feather that hits any edge of the screen bounces back once (and doesn't split or bounce again, thankfully)
  • Dog Sign
    • "Time-Honored Tradition" (E/N) / "Keeper of the Old Ways" (H/L) — Yukine makes an elaborate pattern with danmaku. Sort of like Lyrica's solo spellcard PCB, or Aya's second one in MOF.
  • Pig Sign

Miscellanea

"Genshi" uses the kanji for "present" (as in past and present) and "branch". The reason for this should be obvious enough.

"Yukine" uses the kanji for "snow" and "cat". Some of you may be familiar with a certain folk tale involving some sort of meeting or ceremony where the twelve animals representing the twelve calendar years were to be chosen. The cat and the rat were intending to go together, but the rat decided not to wake up the cat, so the cat missed out on the chance, and the two became enemies.

The snow bit was just incidental, I just wanted to use a name with the kanji for "cat" that wasn't pronounced "neko", as that would've been too obvious.

Thorwing in another rating for the moeshroom. (Though I'm assuming it'll be her older appearance in an actual game, considering only then does she have the expereience to suit a boss (even winning against Utsuho some of the time!)

Also, it'd be interesting to see how her spellcards owuld look in an actual game... (Obviously someone would need to create a series of mushroom bullets for use first. I say series so as to accommodate multiple colours.)

Okay, Masha has a ridiculous lead on everyone else, so I've opened her up for publishing.

Kimiko Muffin, we await your write-up!

In other news, something about Amber: Her power levels and general competence are all over the place. It's implied that she became a youkai by eating a hermit, but despite the badassness that would imply, she is merely a stage 1 boss. It gets worse in game #6, where she gets whupped by regular, non-magical daggerwrists and then immediatley teams up with a major character (potentially even Yukari) and manages to hold her own and not be The Load.

I'm sure this is a trope somewhere, but I can't find anything that matches. Could someone with a stronger trope-sense than I help me?
