Anyone still play these? I was looking around and I didn't find a thread for them, so, here it is.

I'm poking around, looking for a new one to play, haven't played any in a while. Zangband is going kinda slow; shouldn't have gone with a Sprite Mindcrafter, there's too many 'dead levels', and it involves a lot of running away.
  • On the other hand, the mental image of Tinkerbell mindcrushing people is pretty funny.

I'm kinda looking for a Cyberpunk one, but most of them seem to be unfinished or abandoned.

Anyone play Unreal World?

I play Ancient Domains Of Mystery and Rogue Survivor. I tend to die. A lot. In both of them.

I couldn't get into Dwarf Fortress because of it's ridiculous complexity and Net Hack because my characters can't seem to run over items without picking them up. My cousin and brother play them respectively and religiously. Guess there's a rogue for everyone.

I don't think I've really played any of those. I think I tried Nethack and ADOM, but I don't think I could really get into either. Maybe it's the control scheme.

I used to play Gear Head, and I keep meaning to start again. I wonder if it'd make decent Liveblog material?

I'm looking around on Roguebasin, and prospector sounds kinda interesting.

^^ There's an option to turn off autopickup in the Nethack options menu. DO SO. Otherwise, you're going to end up picking up a cockatrice corpse.

I really like ADOM, for whatever reason. I fail so much at it, though. Only two characters have actually made it past the "tutorial" dungeons and in to the Caverns of Chaos.

I'm also downloading Cla Dun and Zettai Hero Project, which are both roguelikes, I think.

I know ZHP is, but I'm not sure about Cla Dun.

Rogue, Torchlight, Borderlands (it's an FPS roguelike, there's no denying it!) and Net Hack on my home PC, Net Hack and Dungeon Hunter on my iPhone, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (the GBA one) via emulation on the PSP.

Cladun is a roguelike, just one with a very twisted mindset. Not for the grind-haters, definitely.

Ah yes! I remember quite a few roguelikes. MUDs, Angband, Kamband, ADOM, and now games like Diablo (though I haven't played it yet, I intend to), Torchlight and Death Spank.

As for Borderlands, it is an FPS, but it does have roguelike elements, so I guess that would work.

[up][up] Just as Hellgate London, I'd say it's a roguelike first and FPS second - your killing abilities depend on your numerical stats slightly more than on your actual ability to line things up with the middle of the screen.

And dammit, how could I forget Death Spank and Mordor? That's Mordor: Depths of Dejenol, no relation to that other Mordor of Middle-Earth. It's essentially a Roguelike with a city above a dungeon, sort of like a cut-down Bards Tale, except that it functions like an offline MMORPG, complete with non-random maps but with random monsters and treasures and traps and immense replayability values despite being an assortment of Windows 3.1 windows. I get the shareware version running on every machine I've ever owned, quite simply because the game is so convoluted (and replayable!) that I'm yet to reach the EDGE OF THE DEMO VERSION. On a game that's over 15 years old, no less. I love it to bits, it's my one crazy guilty pleasure =) (It did have a follow-up, with 3d-accelerated graphics and true MORPG (one less M) functionality years later as Demise: Rise of the Ku'Tan, which, graphics aside, was the exact same game with new maps)

Necroing because it seems like an idea.

I've caught the Roguelike bug and I've started playing a variety. First up was FTL, which I still can't pass sector 5, but FTL has its own topic so I'll move on. Next I picked up Rogue Survivor, which is a survival horror roguelike with the option to play as either humans or zombies. You can build barricades, and have to deal with health, stamina, sleep, hunger, sanity, and other survivors, as they've organized themselves into gangs to try and better survive. Zombies will follow your stench.

Finally, tomorrow I'm going to try Prospector, because it's apparently set in space so that sounds interesting.

Finished playing a bunch of fan Roguelikes and wanted to share my thought on them. And by "Finished Playing" I mean "Got sick of dying horribly in".

The The Castlevania Roguelike feels like an official release we missed on the SNES or something given the quality of the tileset and arcade-style gameplay and such. The creator also seems to have a better grasp on the series history than Konami themselves. Plenty of different classes that are very unique too, but the "Fuck you" difficulty hasn't gotten me past the First Village.

The Alien Roguelike is more manageable but also true to the series roots; this game is Survival Horror. You need to spend your bullets well or you'll get eviscerated by a Xenomorph quickly. If an opportunity presents itself to kill shit with explosives, take it.

The DOOM Roguelike takes the same setting as the Alien Roguelike and flips it around. In stark difference to Nethack's Guile Hero Doomrl is a close a you can get to a turn-based action game. Your only job is to kill things as efficiently as possible. It's very much in the spirit of the original games, and as a fan of them I need to give this my recommendation.

I also recently started playing Shiren The Wanderer on Schitzo's advice. Haven't done much yet, but I will say those damn bandits turning my loot into weeds is annoying as funk.

Most tend to agree that you should just beeline to the exit of those floors between Bamboo Village and Mountaintop Town, lest you waste resources. Though if you don't mind losing certain items, you can get a good amount of riceballs from the riceball changers.

Well, I need to work out the basic shape of the world of Shiren before I start thinking strategy. I barely know what quirks they're throwing at me this time.

Just lost an Orc Fighter in ADOM. He was doing really well. He had enough literacy that he was even shaping up to be a possible Magic Knight with scrolls and one of his first items he found was a blessed battle axe that fit his stats perfectly. Then he stepped on an Altar and got sacrificed to the Kobold gods.

[up] The only game I mentioned earlier that uses ASCII exclusively is the Aliens one.

The classic Nethack has tons of tilesets you can attach to it, although I haven't really bothered getting any of them.

There's also Dungeons of Dredmor if you don't mind something very humorous.

[up][up] Never played it. Details?

EDIT: Giana the level 7 wizard was my latest ADOM death. Exhausted by casting too many spells. She was trying to buy some time to retreat up some steps by hitting a giant lizard and a feral tiger with a stun ray.

Has the Castlevania Roguelike been updated? Last time I played it (Only a year ago or so) it felt very half-assed and unfinished. While I love (And hate) how they translated annoying jump physics in a turn-based roguelike, everything else lacked polish. The townsfolk simply repeated old lines from CV2, and beyond the first meeting outside the gates of Castlevania, nobody ever really acknowledges your race or class.

I found the Dhamnpyr class (Forget the name) to be the only one I could get to survive for very long. Dark Metamorphosis was a lifesaver.

Don't take life too seriously. It's only a temporary situation.

[up][up]I personally like DCSS simply because their stated design mission is basically to never have cheap shots. 99% of deaths are deaths that you can avoid yourselves, and the others are simply flukes, dumb stuff like a kobold with exploding darts spawning right at the entrance.

But more than that, they've got a pretty cool skill system, where you can choose directly what skills you want to funnel your exp into, no matter how you're actually fighting enemies; a mage can train up his polearms by nuking the crap outta everything as long as he's got exp going into polearms.

I also personally like the magic system better than ADOM, because instead of having a limited amount of casts for each spell, you just know the spell permanently. Granted, you instead get spell levels; you get 1 spell level on levelup and for each point of spellcasting, and spells cost varying amounts of spell levels to memorize, from 1 to 9. And you do have a hard spell cap of 21 spells, but honestly, that's more than enough.

And lastly, the races in DCSS are all pretty different and cool. The oddball ones tend to play super differently; Octopodes can't wear body armor, but instead they get 8 ring slots (being, you know, octopi). Demonspawn play like humans with slightly lower skill aptitudes, but they randomly gain good mutations as they level up, things like scales that give natural AC, claws that improve unarmed combat but restrict you from wearing gloves, and the ability to ignite every blood pile you see. Felids are sentient housecats who can't wear any weapons or armor, but get up to 9 extra lives as they level. And a bunch of other cool stuff.

...So yeah. It's a cool roguelike.

[up][up] I played some DCSS and yeah, all that is true and it makes it a pretty appealing roguelike. Plus extras like the Arena are fricking SWAG. It seems like a really good "Beginner's" roguelike. Quaffing potions and reading scrolls rarely gets you killed, and you are usually given the tools you need to survive. Even the autopickup can be left on because it only grabs things that you actually want. Although it doesn't screw around when it spawns a zombie komodo dragon right next to the staircase you went down to floor 3.

There are some things that bug me about it though. Mainly the fact that it's "Racist" as opposed to "Classist". You ultimately are choosing a different experience based on you character's species instead of their profession. Also apparently Intelligence is the One Stat to Rule Them All.

You forgot to mention the awesome prayer system though. Following different religions basically gives you a completely different experience. The goddess of healing lets you pacify monsters, Xobech gives you a card deck to cause random effects, Xom is just an asshole etc, etc. Your piety basically replaces your class honestly.

Latest Death: Alyssa the human ranger in Angband. She read a scroll that turned out to be one of deep tunneling, and suddenly found herself fighting monsters way stronger than she should have been expected to take on at her level. Still did pretty well until her ammo ran out.
