Kory: i will need to do some more testing to see if the 500KB should be lowered even more but either way everyone can relax because the database will not crash or implode in anyway due to page size so splitting pages isn't a huge priority and is just more of a suggestion. For pages that actually load slow, splitting the pages will help slower internet users navigate these pages better.

     Eddie's old post
Looks like we have a big page lock coming. Big in the sense of many pages and big in the sense that the pages to be locked are too big.

It looks like pages over 500,000 characters (html formatted, that is) are crashing the server when someone tries to edit them. programmer's whine

They need to be fixed, anyway. Way too big for one page. They need to be broken up into subpages of a reasonable size.

I'm trying to get better about communicating before big changes, so we'll let this one run for a while before taking the action. The server crashes do come under the heading of 'urgent', though.

Every time I try to click on the .txt. page listed in the thread message, it doesn't load. Does it just not work with the site redesign?

I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.

Yep, that's an IP address issue, I think. I'll drop it from the message.

Mentioning Pantheon.Pending Gods here, since it's so large it's breaking editing.

Worth mentioning that the main page for Final Fantasy XIV is near its limit, I tried to folderize the tropes but it didn't work, looking at troubleshooting that sounds like the most plausible issue. I'm going to bed soon so I don't have the mental faculties to create/index new pages at the moment

That page will soon be at splitting point. I think it can use a hard split soon.

^ Looking at it too, we're less than two weeks from a major expansion in a story driven game, even if it can be folderized and I just messed up, it wouldn't hurt to do as a preventable measure.

I moved the Vs., One-Offs, Date Grumps and Cat Grumps from Game Grumps - Arin and Danny to Game Grumps - Arin and Danny Misc.. The last 4 folders can be removed from Game Grumps - Arin and Danny, which should give some indication of how much more needs to be moved from there to the second page.

Folderizing doesn't really reduce the character count. In fact it tends to increase it. Folderizing only reduces the size of the page in the browser window.

Well, he was talking about moving folders elsewhere. Done but the page is still too large.

[up]Exactly, and thanks. At least now this gives some idea of how much more needs to be moved (without overloading the second page; though considering the second one's not even 100k yet...).

I did some more: The first 6 folders here can be removed from Game Grumps - Arin and Danny; I think we're almost at a manageable size after that (a few more folders will have to be moved to the second Arin and Danny page).

I tend to think of "folderizing" to mean "creating and moving stuff into folders", not "moving stuff out of folders and into their own page" or even "moving folders onto different pages".

Did some more splitting off from that Game Grumps page, will need more still.

Some more here. I think after that, both 1 and 2 will be at good levels.

I've split off part of The Legend of Korra - New Team Avatar, bringing it down to 310786. Not sure if that's under the threshold for this so I held off on removing it from the list.

400k is where things are traditionally split. As LoK has ended, barring comics continuing the main storyline (which may be coming, I dunno) it shouldn't grow too much larger.

I added NASCAR to the list...that page is due for a serious fat trimming.

[up]Maybe just Hard Split it? I get the feeling that may be the way to deal with several of these.
