YMMV / Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie

Go To

  • Anti-Climax Boss: Maligore. An ancient god of evil...who gets exploded with one non-powered slash.
  • Awesome Moments:
    • The sheer Visual Effects of Awesome from the Megazord formation, which appears to use a heavily touched-up toy version; extra points for the flame jets that erupt as the Turbo theme blares, hoisting the Megazord up and ready to face off against a friggin lava demon.
    • There's a minor one in an otherwise funny scene. Divatox calls up Rita Repulsa to ask for some advice on dealing with the Rangers. Rita responds that if she knew how to deal with the Rangers she'd have done that herself and advices Divatox to run away. The scene is meant to be humorous, but it's arguably a testament to how far the Rangers have come as seasoned combatants; their original enemies are now afraid of them and have come to see them as unbeatable. Though,it goes right back to being funny AND awesome on Rita and Zedd's part when you remember that they actually pretty much defeated the Rangers, who only kept going because of the Zeo Crystal, which Goldar and Rito were forced to drop when they tried to steal it.
  • Fan-Preferred Cut Content: With the original cut running three hours, many fans would love to see the cut footage restored to make for a more complete story.
  • Fanon: Based on how Jason and Kimberly were scuba-diving together in the film, some fans have speculated that the two were going out and that Jason was the guy Kimberly left Tommy for in her Dear John letter. On the other hand, Jason's return during Zeo and subsequent romance with Emily during that time period somewhat debunks it, which begs the question who was actually said guy before the movie unless they were in a long distance relationship at the time.
  • Ham and Cheese: Austin St John said of this film that villains have more fun, and that is very obvious when he and Amy Jo Johnson are portraying brainwashed Jason and Kimberly.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Zeo had an episode dealing with Rocky's insecurities about feeling displaced due to Jason's return. In this movie, Rocky's back injury leads to him being replaced on the team by Justin and replaced by Jason in a martial arts tournament.
  • Memetic Loser : Rocky always had an uphill battle with fans due to replacing Jason as Red Ranger in Mighty Morphin, and generally being considered boring compared to Jason, Tommy, Billy and even Adam. Zeo turning him from a guy with a sense of humor who knew when to be serious into a dimwitted goofball didn't help. However, what really sealed Rocky's status as a Memetic Loser was when this movie had him break his back during a training session for a martial arts tournament, making him the first Ranger to retire due to an injury, without even getting the dignity of getting hurt fighting a villain. That Rocky's replacement was a 12-year-old whom some fans consider a Superior Successor didn't help either.note
  • Funny Moments:
    • While the movie was pretty much average, there was the one exchange between Divatox and Rita that made it priceless.
Divatox: Hi Rita, D. here. Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you, I totally forgot about the time change, but I need you to tell me this: how do I get rid of the Power Rangers?
    [speaking from another planet]
Rita Repulsa: What? The Power Rangers? Ha, ha, ha, ha! If I knew that, do you think I would be lying here listening to this?
[puts the phone on Lord Zedd, who is snoring. Loudly. And wearing a sleep-mask]
Rita Repulsa: My advice to you, Divatox: RUUUUN! (Evil Laugh)
    Divatox: Thanks for nothing!
    • What's even funnier is that Divatox isn't just asking someone who's dealt with them, she's asking someone who's actually defeated them! Remember, it was their plan to steal the Zeo Crystal from literally beneath them, and blow up the Command Center. Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers actually ends with the Rangers defeated and their future uncertain. They only were able to keep going this far through the sheer luck of Goldar and Rito being unable to actually steal the Crystal. But since they did keep going, Rita just tried to make Divatox realize that no one can and will ever really take them down.
    • Power Rangers in Space later shows that they just downright hate each other.
    • There's also Divatox actually meeting Maligore for the first time. She tries breaking the ice and shakes his hand... and promptly starts screaming her head off when it hurts.
    • Divatox's out-of-context raspberry blowing.
    • Kat's reaction to Maligore's emergence from the lava pit? "She wants to marry him?"
    • One not in the movie, but the back of certain home releases contains a still of Kat firing a freaking flamethrower at something offscreen while Tommy looks terrified that doesn't appear in the movie. The context of this still is unknown, leaving just a bizarre, chuckle worthy Noodle Incident.
    • Divatox's first moment on-camera, in which she steps through a door on her submarine and addresses her grunts.
    Divatox: IDIOOOOOTS!
[An entire row of Piranhatrons instantly salute]
    • Kimberly's magnificent line when she's turned evil and has to fight Kat?
"Oh and sweetie? Pink is out."
  • Sequelitis: While technically not in the same continuity as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, this film is not looked at as fondly. The previous film ranges from being genuinely liked to being a Guilty Pleasure, whereas this film lacks the more cinematic style and is overall very slow-paced.
  • Special Effects Failure: Elgar's head switches from the modified American version and the original Japanese head during a few shots.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: This movie's handling of Kim and Jason, two of the original Mighty Morphin team, is among the biggest criticisms by fans. They are included largely for Fanservice, with no addressing Kim and Tommy's break-up and the show being rather ambiguous as to what Jason was up to after the Zeo finale. Worse, Jason and Kim are reduced damsels for the Rangers to save, which is rather frustrating for those who remember how badass Jason could be, even without his powers. Kim is particularly bad as Jason helps her escape the villains only for her to be captured again.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Both Tommy and Kimberly are reunited on-screen. Previously, their breakup and Kimberly's Dear John letter to Tommy had been one of the more talked-about subplots in Power Rangers, where there had been a lot of mystery and intrigue surrounding Kimberly's decision to finally break up with Tommy. However, none of this is ever brought up in the movie and both Tommy and Kimberly don't really get to spend any time talking about their past relationship or discussing the actual breakup. Heck, we don't even get to see Kimberly's reaction to how Tommy was now dating Kat.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome:
    • Compared to the very primitive computer animation used for the Megazord in the first film, the Turbo Megazord transformation from T:APRM uses a set of models which are heavily toy-based (to the point where the joint connectors are like those on the toy, which Carranger didn't bother to show), and they look really good. And then, a pair of frigging flame jets ignite from the back of Red Lightning to hoist the Megazord upward to face Maligore.
    • The Maligore costume is actually quite impressive and intimidating, the head in particular takes cues from Predator. The Turbo Megazord combination sequence is also well liked for the use of miniatures and higher level of Technology Porn, as you can almost see the hydraulics, steam and gears as the combination sequence takes place.
