YMMV / The Annoying Orange

Go To

  • Awesome Music:
    • Pear Isn't Boring, a catchy hard-metal that showcases feats Pear does seemingly on the regular when no ones around, even throwing in a Rousing Speech of all things, delivering the message of "words don't define your life" in probably the most metal way possible with Pear rattling off that the fact him being a bookworm and taking naps all day doesn't make him boring; it makes him metal. He then tells that the song goes out to damn near everyone who's felt that they've been boring, because they aren't, because deep down, there just as metal as anyone else in their own special way.
    • Monster Truck, parody of AC/DC's Thunderstruck. Surprisingly, it does amazingly perfectly copying the original riff, and Little Apple's voice near-perfectly matches Brian Johnson's scream-singing.
    • Fryday. For as decisive Rebecca Black used to be, this song perfectly captured the original song's joy and overall tone. Combine that with a rap segment from Little Apple, Orange's surprisingly sweet singing voice, and you have a piece of nostalgia on your hands.
    • Jello. For being a parody of "Hello", it somehow makes a song about reconnection part a serious requiem for the aforementioned Jello and part roasting the expired milk that he was unfortunately replaced with.
    • The Airbag Song is the perfect mash-up of funny and upbeat
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Is Orange a legitimate Jerkass who takes joy in tormenting and getting a rise out of others, or is does he simply tell jokes to get attention and cope with all the death and destruction he witnesses on a daily basis? There are a few episodes that suggest the latter theory, though his Flanderization ventures him more towards the former theory.
  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: Suprisingly done with the number "i" in TOP 10 Numbers That'll Blow Your Mind!,as "i" is in fact,an imaginary number and the square root for -1.
  • Archive Panic: As for 2021, they are more than 1,700 Annoying Orange videos (and counting). It will take a long time to see them all.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Orange himself. Fans find him funny, while detractors find him outright insufferable even before his Flanderization.
  • Bile Fascination: Probably the reason some even watched the TV series, especially after The Mysterious Mr. Enter took a crack at it.
  • Broken Base: The TV series. Many viewers considered it one of Cartoon Network's abominations of mankind, while others at least find it So Okay, It's Average in its own right. Some even consider it bad, but nowhere near as bad as most people claim it to be.
  • Critic-Proof: The show was received negatively by the critics. However, by 2013 the videos on the channel were viewed more than one billionnote  times.
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • In Storytime: Peter Pan, Orange mentions how the titular character spends his days beating up babies.
    • Normally, getting infected with Swine Flu isn't a laughing matter. But if the Anthropomorphic Personification of YouTube itself injects a syringe full of it into a living orange, it's a gut busting forgotten gem of Annoying Orange's starting point.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
  • Franchise Original Sin: Later videos became criticized for having a noticeable influx of Toilet Humor. Fart and burp jokes were actually present in earlier videos, but were nowhere near as prominent as they have since become.
  • Fridge Brilliance: In Snack Attack, Prune Juice is played by British chef and TV personality Jamie Oliver - a man who became known in the UK and States for trying to push dietary health (with little success). In the episode his character is the lone snack in a cooler who's left out of being consumed despite being more nutritional, due to him tasting awful. But whether this is an ironic coincidence or not, or whether Oliver was in on the joke, we'll never know - since this was kind of a strange unexpected collaboration in the first place.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Liam the Leprechaun's series is most popular in Ireland.
    • The Annoying Orange series has been dubbed into Japanese and it's already gotten quite the views.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In Luck o' the Irish, Orange mentions that marshmallows make him gassy — slightly disturbing in hindsight now that Marshmallow is one of Orange's best friends.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Despite the comedy centered around it, seeing Pear incredibly willing to teach a baby carrot 'kitchen sounds' is rather sweet.
    • While it was also Played for Laughs, it's surprisingly sweet seeing Pear and Little Apple try to save Orange from the addiction-palooza that is Cookie Clicker.
    • Seeing Orange actually try to comfort crying foods (whether as a result of his actions or not) is definitely this, seeing as how he's usually being an annoying Jerkass, it's nice to see he's still a Non-Ironic Clown at heart.
    • The Whisper Challenge, a rare instance of Orange and Pear earnestly (for the most part) enjoying each other's company.
    • Another rare moment of Orange and Pear enjoying each other's company is Annoying Orange and Pear React to KNIVES!!!. Orange in particular gets absolutely estatic when Pear cracks a joke of his own.
    • While every other food Orange has met screamed in horror when they died, the only exception is Jalapeno, who just decides to Face Death with Dignity and tell Orange to "keep the passion burning". What's better is that he's one of the only people who doesn't get annoyed by Orange, instead relating with him when he was younger and motivating him with the said passion speech above.
    • Orange making a Tier List in lieu of their rise in trending. Might not sound all much on paper, but the kicker is that he puts everyone on S tier, even the likes of Knife, Lounote  and Grapefruit. It goes to show that as annoying as he is, he doesn't seem to see any of his friends or accomplices in negative lights, not even the same knife who's murdered several foods.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
  • It's Popular, Now It Sucks!: Many will agree that the web series was actually funny and entertaining at first, only for it to get really old, really quickly... and the fact that it's now a TV series on Cartoon Network, and is licensed and merchandise is a bit overkill.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Some viewers of the TV show are far more interested in Toby Turner than the actual show.
  • Love to Hate: Despite being a tremendous Jerkass who torments and harasses other foods, Orange is nevertheless very entertaining to fans.
  • More Popular Spin-Off: Orange was originally just another Gagfilms character. After the first Annoying Orange video became massively popular, Dane made more videos with the character, which were still posted on their YouTube channel alongside their other Gagfilms videos. However, Orange migrated over to his own YouTube channel soon after and began uploading new episodes every week. As of 2020, The Annoying Orange continues to release weekly videos long after the main branch of Gagfilms stopped producing videos.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Orange's Catchphrase pretty much became one. Notable mentions go to this video where Orange lipsyncs to Bossfights "Milky Ways".
    • Annoying Orange Series Premierenote
    • Annoying Orange was the first VTuber.note
    • "You guy's don't mind if I drop in, do ya?"note
    • "Hey Apple! Amazing grace, how sweet, the sound..."note
  • Older Than They Think: Liam the Leprechaun's pre-Annoying Orange appearances aren't very well-known, especially his appearances in the NBK 24/7 series.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Steve the Strawberry from Back to the Fruiture, who is seen for about half a second before being blasted to juice with a futuristic ray gun, to which Pear responds "Aw, poor Steve!" (This was a reference to Daneboe's pre-Annoying Orange videos where food gets killed, in which the first one to go is usually named Steve.)
  • Special Effect Failure:
  • Squick: If you're not a fan of Toilet Humor, Orange's inappropriate sense of humor can come off as this.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: The music from Nyan Nya Orange (Nyan Cat SPOOF) is based on Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya! (heard in Nyan Boe).
  • Tear Jerker: Rage Sages backstory can hit too close if you know a musician who's had his life take a trip through hell. His wife left him for a rapping zucchini, he crashed his car into a garbage disposal, and has been emotionally drained out of all of it, being unable to actually muster up the immense rage his songs are known for, witch is why he's been writing a more saccharine approach throughout the episode. Thank God Orange and Pear find a way to help him off his nonexistent feet.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Many fans were unhappy with Bobjenz's retirement from the role of Grapefruit and replacement by Jon Bailey in 2021. It got to the point that they even discussed this in an episode of "The Juice", where Stinky Cheese scrolls through most of the comments to see that the fans clearly aren't pleased with this new voice.
  • Unintentional Uncanny Valley: The foods aren't tooned or anything (barring the occasional Art Shift). Daneboe themself has acknowledged that the characters are kind of creepy.
  • Unpopular Popular Character: Orange and Grapefruit. Both of them are barely tolerated by the other fruits, but loved by the fans.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: What Marshmallow's Ambiguous Gender seems to have started out as. Them being referred to using he/him pronouns was later Hand Waved by Word of God. It then became a Running Gag throughout the Ask Orange series until a video in June 2022 revealed they are nonbinary.
