YMMV / My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic S5 E17 "Made in Manehattan"

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: Applejack says the Midsummer Theater Revival "might be worth lookin' into... if we can ever get off this street corner," making it sound like she and Rarity are trapped in a life of prostitution.
  • Broken Base: Some fans aren't too happy about having three Rarity-centric episodes in a row, especially coming off a two month hiatus. Though on the other hand, keeping in mind that Rarity had been neglected, especially during Season 3, this can be seen as a Throw the Dog a Bone...
    • One also has to consider that this was a result of the broadcast order (specifically pushing "Scare Master" to fall on Halloween in the original broadcast) and not production order.
  • Just Here for Godzilla:
    • Rarity and Applejack draw a crowd just for being both a rather large ship and also considered to be the two characters who are the most entertaining together.
    • Many people were excited for this episode before the synopsis was revealed due to the announcement that Coco Pommel would be returning.
  • Les Yay:
    • Rarity's general lack of personal space when around Applejack, including more than a few instances of touching noses as well as a moment where Rarity falls dramatically into A.J.'s arms.
    • The sign on Rarity's friendship advice booth has her and A.J.'s face's with a heart in between them.
    • The end scene where after buying Applejack a new hat, Rarity and A.J. clasp hooves and stare into each others eyes, much the same way Lyra and Bon-Bon did in "Slice Of Life".
  • Memetic Molester: Rarity toward Applejack in the table scene.
  • Moe: Coco was already one of the cutest characters in the show, and she's every bit as relentlessly huggable here, but in this episode we see pictures of her as a filly. It's as adorable as it sounds. She also blushes in modesty a few times, and later after the impromptu show succeeds, gives a cute wink.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • Applejack is clearly uncomfortable about going to Manehattan but yet no mention is made during the episode of the brief time she spent in the city as a filly.
      • On the subject of AJ's Manehattan relatives, Babs Seed and her parents weren't mentioned either.
    • Suri Polomare isn't mentioned. There's no word right now if she's still up to her bad ways, departed Manehattan or eager to get revenge on Rarity and Coco.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Despite using a similar model to Gallop J. Fry, a colt, and being voiced by Cathy Weseluck, the voice of Spike, the foal who watches the play is listed in the end credits as "Filly".
  • The Woobie: As it turns out, even though she's away from Suri and working a new job that she's very passionate about, Coco is still incredibly good at making sad faces. It's hard not to feel sorry for her when it looks like the play isn't going to work out.
    "It's hopeless. Just... hopeless."
