The SMOCT, or Sailor Moon Original Character Tournament, is an OCT held on DeviantArt (with two completed tournaments). Competitors enter original characters based on the series Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, who then fight each other in a single elimination tournament for the right to Make a Wish on the Silver Crystal! It has gained popularity since its inception, and now is one of the largest Sailor Moon tournaments held on DeviantArt. While it doesn't qualify as a true Webcomic, a good deal of the entries have some general plotline that the judges set and the participating artists (attempt) to follow. Not all of the comics can be considered canon, but some artists tend to follow the other competitors' comics more than others.
Tropes in SMOCT include:
- Action Girl: EVERY. SINGLE. FEMALE. CHARACTER. (Aside from a few, mostly the younger competitors).
- Affably Evil: Some artists viewed the Mystery Judge in the Mini Tournament (SMOCT2) as this.
- All There in the Manual: Pretty much everything you need to know about the SMOCT can be found in the various journal entries and the judges' profiles.
- All Planets Are Earth-Like: Any fictional planet a character comes from.
- An Ice Person: Quite a few characters, most notably Sailors Arcturus, Rozaria, Silversnow, Arim, and more in the most recent tournament.
- Ass Kicking Pose: Tends to happen a lot.
- Calling Your Attacks: Done in every comic.
- Cloud Cuckoolander: Shion, AKA Sailor Gemini, a new opponent for round 3, whose behavior is considerably different between being transformed and civilian.
- Creepy Child: Lady Doll
- Dark Is Not Evil: Sailor Darkness and Sailor Libitina. Also, Sailor Nyx in SMOCT2 can be considered this, being the Soldier of the Night.
- Dark Is Evil: Eclipsed Sailor Nyx in SMOCT3, as both she and Eclipsed Sailor Hemera are now counted as evil senshi. Word of God says that it'll be explained at some point...
- Deadpan Snarker: Sora, AKA Sailor Magellan.
- Defeat Equals Friendship: Tends to happen a lot during the tournament.
- Defrosting Ice Queen: Silversnow, although the "defrosting" part is a bit questionable. Namida/Sailor Rozaria aslo counts.
- Doppelgänger Attack /Counter-Attack: Gemini's Counter Blitz attack. If a doppelganger is attacked, Gemini will counter from behind.
- Double Agent: Invoked, used, and subverted (!) by Sailor Meow.
- Elemental Powers: Used by too many characters to list.
- Eyes Always Shut: Shion, but only in her civilian form and unless something serious is going on then.
- Exactly What It Says on the Tin: Team We're Going To Lose in SMOCT3.
- Falling Chandelier of Doom: Used and subverted in Marie-Berry and Kennasaur's entry in SMOCT1.
- Feather Flechettes: Done by both Sailor Marin and Sailor Wing, who both use feathers in attacks, usually in the form of a Flechette Storm.
- Genki Girl: Punalina/Sailor Calliope in SMOCT1 and Tierra in SMOCT2. Might be Shion in SMOCT3.
- Gratuitous Foreign Language (possibly): Sailor Quetzalcoatl only speaks in Mayan glyphs, and cannot be translated. However, the authors guarantee that the symbols have been researched thoroughly and make sense after all. Since we've not checked this, we can't really be the judge of that.
- Healing Hands: Used by Sailor Firefox.
- Lady Looks Like a Dude: Sailor Arim in SMOCT 2. She sometimes qualifies for Bifauxnen, depending on the comic, but always qualifies for Butch Lesbian.
- Lampshade Hanging: Shion brings up two good points in her round 1 comic: Where the water from the satellite comes from and where the milk comes from.
- Light 'em Up: Most notably used by Sailor Nut and Sailor Polaris.
- Make a Wish: The prize for the characters says it all.
- Mama Bear: Reikon/Sailor Daichi toward Kainashi/Cybele, especially since they're the only mother/daughter duo thus far in the tournament.
- Most Common Superpower: Sailor Mira/Mei.
- Nice Guy: Alex/Dusk Bandit. Just because it would make people smile he let them dress him up as a girl. Though sometimes he's also...
- Obfuscating Stupidity because Alex/Dusk Bandit honestly uses his foolishness to let people underestimate him.
- Playing with Fire: Done with several characters including Sailor Mira/Mei, Sailor Calliope/Punalina, and others.
- Pungeon Master: Sailor Calliope/Punalina. Her main attack is spewing fire because she said a pun.
- Put on a Bus: Josie/Sailor Wing and Alex/Dusk Bandit in round one of SMOCT3 due to artist absence, making it also a case of Real Life Writes the Plot
- Shockand Awe: Most notiably used by Sailor Psyche
- Shout-Out: Do we need to point out that Shion is the biggest distributor of shout-outs in SMOCT3?
- Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Shion (Sugar) and Gemini (Ice). Word of God says that Shion isn't bipolar or has a split personality; Shion just remembers her responsibilities as Gemini.
- Transformation Sequence: It's practically genre required. Used in many of the comics.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Sailor Quetzalcoatl's move Kanul, which translates to "Abundance of Snakes" is allegedly likely to induce fear of snakes. Thus, competing with her leads to this trope.
