Las Paridas de la Guarida or Madness in the Lair is a Spanish webcomic created by Carlos Benedito a.k.a. Chuck Draug. It stars the inhabitants of a large flat, La Guarida (The Lair), in an awkward Spanish building in Calle Desengaño nº 30, mainly comprised of characters created by the author (and the author himself and one of his alter-egos). Also starring people Mike the Baliflid, an alien rodent from the Ascendancy game, and many other people, some as famous as Shao Kahn, ex Sailor Jupiter Makoto Kino, Samus Aran and, believe it or not, Deadpool. And this will show you that not everything is better with Deadpool in it.The comic is known for its obscure references to role playing games, comics and not-so-well-known fighting games, cameos - most of the time totally unneeded - and its extremely large cast of characters. It also has touched some topics like fanboy-ism and paraphilias... and how not to make a Cerebus Syndrome. You can read it in Spanish here and in English here (although the author needs to translate more pages to English).
Of course, everyone suffers of Medium Awareness, and they don't miss the chance to criticise the author.
And they even bring readers in!
Yukari: Excuse me, dear random reader. Tell me: you did understand my plans, didn't you?
Reader: No, and thanks to this webcomic I now hate Gensokyo, Touhou and...
At the end of the webcomic, the Fourth Revolving Door is replaced by a proper Fourth Wall that ends the webcomic's existence
Butt Monkey: Monty Pantheon and the author himself. And in a minor scale, Lucas and Shao Kahn.
Cerebus Syndrome: Which happens to be the name of the webcomic's final saga as well.
How did it happen? Simply: we got a Knight of Cerebus... who is Shao Kahn, after recovering his powers. He's back to Outworld and you better be afraid, because it's post-Armageddon Kahn! Looks like Raiden won't be able to Retcon this.
Kahn seems to have lost his powers in MK's Armageddon and been thrown in our world. Still, he later recovers his powers and is on a quest to first conquer new worlds and then destroy the Multiverse because he is bored. No kidding.
There are mentions to Lobo's past experience as an archbishop. His stay in Hell is mentioned as well, though it actually differs a lot from the DC continuity, as well as getting the Red Lantern ring he just uses as a pendant.
Crossover: The very nature of this webcomic is being one big illustrated badfic. Besides, how else would we have Marvel, DC Comics, Capcom, Nintendo and others' universes together like they've always been the same one?
The novelized story "Felaryan Madness" is a crossover with... well, Felarya. Also starring Kyria, the cute and mute man-eating fairy.
Many other Spanish webcomic characters from series as ¡Eh, tío!, Dragon Mail or Leie have been seen too.
However, other cameos aren't that... lawyer friendly.
Kaiju: Clara vs Fernandeath, with a side dish of Tokusatsu.
Loads and Loads of Characters: Seriously, the original cast was of 30+ characters. Good thing the author is currently focusing on the somewhat relevant ones...
Also, let's not forget this comic made the 'unnecessary cameo' expression popular among Spanish webcomics.
Miko: Rei Hino and Reimu Hakurei get a good chunk of screentime.
Funny how both are depicted as abusing of their ofuda seals, being Yaiba their main target...
Out-of-Character Moment: How can it be that Makoto hates her time as Sailor Jupiter? Just because of the whole hentai and doujin stuff Sailor Moon has originated?
And one of the neighbors, Ozanúnest, is an expert on Silent Hill mythos.
Let's keep going with their neighborhood: Makoto Kino, Lobo, Deadpool, Shao Kahn... lawyers would have tons of fun if the author tried to make money out of his webcomic!
Shao Kahn just loves yelling "Mortal Kombat!" when he has the chance.
And when he's off to Japan with part of the cast, his place as the doorkeeper is taken by The Incredible Hulk. Just for the laughs.
The street they live in is called Desengaño 30, based on Desengaño 21, the street where the characters of the Spanish TV show Aquí no hay quien viva live.
In fact, the webcomic was at first a geeky take on Drawn Together that ended combined with both Aquí no hay quien viva and Francisco Ibáñez's 13 Rue del Percebe.
The Rabbid Jean-Claude Le Lapin was injected with Liefeld serum that allows him to turn into a gigantic rabbit with questionable proportions...
One of the characters' friends, Pedro, owns a comic-book store called Pnakotus. Yes, right straight from Cthulhu Mythos...
And with the help of Mordekaim and Fëadraug, he summons a member of the Great Race of Yith for a themed comic-book store competition!
Two Sekhmet fanboys gave her a Captain America costume, complete with a Vibranium shield and... a bald eagle called Vengadora (Avenger).
Monty imagined the author as a Team Fortress 2 Engineer when he got his Telecom Engineering degree.
Sacmis and Pymie visit a cosplay shop in Akihabara. They respectively dress as Suigintou and Suiseiseki (complete with DESU!) from Rozen Maiden, Athena Asamiya and Iori Yagami from The King of Fighters, Nazrin and Kogasa from Touhou... until Sacmis ends dressed as Haruhi Suzumiya and Pymie as Kenshiro.
Not to forget that Mike the Baliflid and Jean-Claude have dressed as Team Fortress 2's Sniper and Spy respectively. Complete with Jarate and cardboard disguise masks.
Also, Jean-Claude dressed as Vocaloid star Miku Hatsune. Nightmares, anyone?
In the background of such store, there are outfits of Kohaku, Saber and Miku Hatsune.
When you thought Fernandeath had enough power by growing 100-foot tall, BOOM!, he grows even bigger and nastier.
Transformation Sequence: Parodied by Makoto when she turns into Sailor Jupiter during the usual neighborhood fight. Her - forced - transformation made everyone look at her and stop paying attention to each other... and the Hulk-esque Jean-Claude went back to normal because he was no longer angry. Just because he was enjoying the transformation.
And thanks to this, he's now Makoto's more than pleased pet.
