The Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout (Happy Birthday Bugs in Japan and The Bugs Bunny Blowout in Europe) is a 1990 video game for the NES, developed by Kemco and starring, naturally, Bugs Bunny.

The plot is simple; it's Bugs Bunny's 50th birthday, and he's been invited to a party by his fanclub as a guest of honor. Unfortunately, the other Looney Tunes ensemble get word of Bugs' party and decide to go out of their way to keep Bugs from going to it purely out of jealousy. Bugs is this forced to endure several levels of platforming hazards, enemies and then fight each of the Looney Tunes to make it to his party.

The game is a typical side-scrolling platformer in the vein of Super Mario Bros., made as part of Bugs Bunny's 50th anniversary celebration at the time.

This game provides examples of:

  • Alliterative Title: Minus the "The".
  • Big Fancy Castle: The sixth and final world takes place in a castle.
  • Birthday Episode: The game is set on Bugs Bunny's 50th birthday.
  • Circling Birdies: When Bugs gets hit, stars spin around his head for a few seconds, rendering him unable to use his hammer.
  • Cool Board: Both Sylvester and Sylvester Jr. ride skateboards when Bugs battles them.
  • Covers Always Lie: Porky Pig pops up on the games cover, even though he's not present at all in-game, not even as a cameo. This was presumably a holdover from the fact that Porky was planned to be in the game at one point, but was cut.
  • Driven by Envy: Bugs' fellow Looney Tunes. Subverted because they were just playing "some very funny tricks".
  • Excuse Plot: Bugs Bunny is going off to celebrate his 50th birthday, and the other Looney Tunes are (seemingly) jealous and go out of their way to sabotage it.
  • Feathered Fiend: Tweety is the boss of Stages 1-2, 2-2, and 4-2, and Foghorn Leghorn is the boss of Stage 5-4.
  • Final Boss: Taz.
  • Green Hill Zone: Worlds 1 and 5 both take place in a forest.
  • Happy Ending: Bugs makes it to the party, and it's revealed the other Looney Tunes characters weren't really jealous of Bugs, but were just pulling some "very funny tricks" and all celebrate Bugs' birthday together.
  • Kaizo Trap: There is one part where you can get killed by a football thrown by Taz after you defeat him if Taz throws one before he is defeated.
  • Lethal Lava Land: World 3 takes place at an erupting volcano.
  • Meaningless Lives: 1-ups are very plentiful, and if you run out of lives, you are sent back to the title screen, but can still continue playing where you left off.
  • Mercy Invincibility: You have this, but as long as it's active Bugs can't use his hammer to defend himself.
  • Net Gun: Elmer Fudd uses one in the battles against him. Should it catch Bugs, Elmer will immediately beeline over to inflict Collision Damage. While the net will eventually go away on its own, the player can wiggle Bugs free to release him sooner.
  • Puzzle Boss:
    • Daffy Duck could be seen as one, since you are not actually supposed to fight him, and instead have to dodge him while trying to collect the goal carrot.
    • Foghorn Leghorn is the boss of Stage 5-4. Bugs cannot damage him with his hammer, and instead has to climb up to the ledge where Henery Hawk is. Once Bugs defeats Henery, Foghorn will fall with him.
  • Recurring Boss: Tweety and Elmer Fudd are both fought three times in the game. Daffy Duck is also seen many times throughout the game, but Bugs isn't actually supposed to fight him and instead has to dodge him as he tries to get the goal carrot.
  • Seesaw Catapult: Bugs can stand on one end of a seesaw and use his hammer to hit the other end, causing the seesaw to launch him into the air.
  • Shifting Sand Land: World 2 takes place in a desert.
  • Shout-Out: Oscar the Grouch appears as an enemy.
  • Smelly Skunk: PepĂ© Le Pew is the boss of Stage 4-4, and he attacks Bugs by spraying clouds at him.
  • Stalactite Spite: Falling stalactites are obstacles in level 4.
  • Super Drowning Skills: Bugs dies if he falls in water.
  • Tennis Boss: The final boss is Taz, who tosses footballs. Bugs can hit the footballs with his hammer so that they will go back to Taz and hit him.
  • Title Drop: In the game's opening cutscene, the title is mentioned in the invitation Bugs receives.
"Happy Birthday, Bugs! As members of your fanclub, it is our pleasure to request your presence as the honored guest, at the spectacular Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout."
  • Underground Level: World 4 takes place in a cave, where Bugs has to deal with falling stalactites, ghosts, and the lights going out.
  • Whack-a-Monster: After clearing one of the first five worlds, Bugs gets to play the "Willy the Weasel" minigame, wherein he has to hit as many Willy the Weasel targets as he can with his hammer within the time limit.
  • Your Size May Vary: In gameplay, Tweety Bird is depicted as being ridiculously larger than normal, to the point where he's almost as tall as Bugs.
