Trivia Tropes

  • Absurdly Short Production Time: It took the studios behind the movie just three months to complete it, a record at the time.

  • Acting for Two:
    • Besides his usual role as Murky Dismal, Peter Cullen also voices Murky's creation the Monstromurk in the two part special "The Mighty Monstromurk Menace".
    • Also, the Color Kids are spread between three voice actors, so Red Butler, Patty O'Green, and Canary Yellow all have the same voice actor, as do Lala Orange, Indigo Doll, and Shy Violet. Buddy Blue is the sole exception.
  • Blooper: In the first episode of the TV series, we see that Murky and Lurky have captured Lala Orange, Indigo Doll, and Buddy Blue. When Wisp and her group rescue them, Buddy's been switched with Patty O'Green, who had actually been rescued earlier.
  • Dub Name Change: So many that it now has its own page!
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: The movie got a DVD back in 2004, and the TV series in 2017, but these have since gone out of print. Additionally, all DVD releases use the edited-for-syndication versions of the first five episodes, which change the show's intro and have edits to reduce running time. If you want the uncut episodes with their original intros, you'll have to hunt down the VHS releases from the 80s or import the German DVDs (which have English audio tracks and retain the original intro).
  • Market-Based Title: The series was called Mahou Shoujo Rainbow Brite in Japan.
    • The European French version is called "Blondine au Pays de l'Arc-en-Ciel" (loosely, "Blondine in Rainbow Land")note .
    • In Germany, she's known as "Regina Regenbogen" (regenbogen is the German word for rainbow).
    • In Spain, the show is called "El Tierra del ArcoĆris" (Rainbow Land), while Rainbow Brite herself was renamed Rubita.
    • In Italy, she's known as "Iridella".
  • Referenced by...:
  • Show Accuracy/Toy Accuracy: Sunriser's box says she's Tickled Pink's horse, but in her only appearance in the show, she had no rider. The 2010s picture books, set in the universe of the 1980s show, finally explain the discrepancy by having Tickled Pink befriend the horse.
  • Stillborn Franchise: The 2014 reboot miniseries was meant to test the waters for a revitalization of the franchise ala My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, but its low outreach led to Hallmark not moving forward with the reboot and not much else of Rainbow Brite has been heard of since.
  • What Could Have Been: The Mattel girls (Moonglow, Tickled Pink and Stormy) all have well documented design processes before their final debuts.
    • Moonglow was designed with Mystical White Hair however she was changed to bright pink when it was decided white made her look elderly.
    • Because Murky and Lurky were basically pushing nothing as sales, Stormy was originally designed to be a female villain. Her color scheme was going to be either black and silver or purple. Likewise, Sky Dancer would have been named THVNDER, but this was never cleared by copyright.
    • Tickled Pink originally had a tulip like mark on her cheek, similar to Rainbow's star. Sunriser's name was originally Flurry, she could speak, and she had a talent of kicking up pink fluffy clouds when she ran.

General Trivia

  • Noted anime director Osamu Dezaki directed "Peril in the Pits".
  • As with many of DIC's productions, Shuki Levy, and Haim Saban are the composers for the series. They even use a reprise of the He-Man theme in the Beginning of Rainbowland.
