Times where someone went "Sure, Let's Go with That" in Fan Works.

Crossovers
  • In Amazing Fantasy, Peter leaves out rusty nails and other dangerous objects to test and train Izuku's Spider-Sense. Izuku is not reassured when Peter refuses to look him in the eye afterward.
Peter: Oh thank God, it actually worked this time.
Izuku: Like you knew it would… right, Peter-san?
Peter: [refuses to make eye contact] Rrrriiiight. Yup, sure kid.
  • The Amazing Spider-Luz in: Across the Owl-Verse!:
    • When Belos comes to the conclusion that Luz is actually the biological half-human and half-witch daughter of Eda to explain where her powers come from, Lilith, despite knowing this isn't even remotely accurate, decides to play along with his assumption, to keep the Emperor in the dark about just how capable the Human Realm really is.
    • After Amity destroys Grom for good, she's prepared to explain that she learned the magic to do so from Doctor Strange in the Human Realm. However, Principal Bump preempts her by saying she must have learned it from Eda, and after some additional hinting from both Bump and Willow to avoid having to get the Emperor's Coven involved, Amity just rolls with the claim.
  • Robin is convinced that Xander and Willow have two different fake identities in A Brand New Day and is amazed at how thorough the second set is, being unable to find a single hint that it's false. Neither of the two correct him that they only have a single set of fake identities and the "second set" is real. To be fair to Robin, their real identities have some odd history attached to them, such as both being kicked out of boy scouts before enrolling in girl scouts and being officially declared twins despite having birthdays several months apartnote .
  • Invoked in "Detective Annabeth Chase of the 99th Precinct", when Annabeth Chase joins the 99th precinct. When the time comes for her to explain her true history to her new colleagues, she and Percy soon establish that Jake Peralta's knowledge of Greek mythology is limited to the Disney movie of Hercules, but Annabeth concedes that this at least gives Jake the essential details.
  • In The Dragon of Harrenhal, Carik's clothes look Braavosi to some people and he doesn't correct them when they assume he's from there or further East to save having to make up a lie about his origins.
  • In eXtra power twin Harry conceals his face at Kings Cross so he won't be recognized as his celebrity brother's estranged twin.
Ginny: Are you so good looking people will go blind when they see you? Is that why you're hiding?
Harry: OK. Let's go with that excuse.
  • In Infinity Train: Knight of the Orange Lily, London asks Easter, Specter's Split Personality, where they come from. Easter just points to the sky and London assumes that they're some guardian angel to protect Specter. Easter doesn't really try to refute it. Chapters later, it's revealed that Easter is actually from the Living Lightning Car, as a lightning bolt that struck Specter down and fused with him and Easter admits that they do want to "help" Specter in a way so they technically are from the heavens.
  • In Kara of Rokyn, the protagonist falls asleep, and suddenly she's floating and looking straight at herself lying in the bed. Then Dream of the Endless shows up out of nowhere to ask for her help, prompting Kara to ask if she's dreaming. Dream pauses and answers "Yes, let's say that you're dreaming". And since she's in the dream, she can be hurt by other dream things, hence she must treat them as if they were real dangers.
Dream: "I am no enemy, Kara Zor-El. I am not Death. I am no ghost. But I need your help. The Dreaming needs your help."
Kara: "Then this is a dream?"
Dream: (tilting head) "Let us agree that it is. Yet, you must agree that if it is a dream, then you, in this form, are also a dream. In this dream, you may be endangered by the things of a dream. They must be treated as realities. Do you understand?"
  • Lost in Camelot;
    • When Uther assumes that Bo and Kenzi's clothing was forced on them by the sorcerer who sent then to Camelot, the two decide to go with that assumption as what they've seen of Camelot makes it clear that the kingdom's more conservative dress code may not approve of the idea that Kenzi wears such a skimpy 'skirt' and Bo wears trousers by their own choice.
    • In the sequel, The Lost Kingdom, Dyson ultimately agrees with Morgana's speculation that she was able to penetrate the barrier around the Blood King's kingdom because of her adoptive ties to Uther, even though she doesn't think she's actual royalty at this point.
  • A Possible Encounter for a Phantom: In Chapter 66, Ron says Danny is "also NOT half-human and that little girl is his cousin and NOT his clone by his archenemy". After that, Danny isn't surprised "Kim doesn't have a secret identity".
  • In The Search for Victory, this is basically the reason Rhodey decides to just accept being called ‘War Machine’ rather than ‘Iron Patriot’ despite ‘Iron Patriot’ being his official title. When everyone from his best friend to a general he just met expresses a preference for the original name, Rhodey finally decides that it’s clear by now that the only people who thought the name change was a good idea were the people who insisted on it in the first place.
  • In Sparks Fly, Clark Kent immediately recognizes Leslie Ellis despite her currently doing a perfect cosplay as Sailor Jupiter. Leslie makes a joke about Clark recognizing her by her bust and he quickly agrees.
  • A Subtle Knife:
    • When Kid Flash accidentally reveals the whole Team believes Artemis is actually Green Arrow's bastard daughter, she's very happy to let them think she's related to a genuine hero rather than being a villain's offspring.
    • Also, Edge knows that claiming to be a Self-Insert from the "real" world would be a bad strategy so when his teammates peg his home universe as Earth Bet he's quite relieved.
  • Xander in With Sprinkles ends up aboard the Serenity due to a misunderstanding after he jumps realities. Rather than explain that he's a Planeswalker, he gives vague explanations and lets the crew fill in the gaps. For example, Xander says he makes cyborgs that are covered in lab-grown flesh, and the crew figures he's a Mad Scientist who sells bodyguards for a living. When Xander uses magic to fix a broken part, Simon is amazed at him performing telekinesis at a molecular level. Xander notes how convenient it is they're inventing explanations for him.
    • Later he starts paying members of the crew with gold coins to let them come up with a plausible explanation for what he did. Examples include: Saying the gravity controls malfunction when he pulled off a Wall Crawl, stating he has deep pockets after he pulls out twenty one pound bags of coffee, and insisting the town reservoir filling up on its own was because they must've hit a natural spring while digging it. At one point, Mal reflexively makes an excuse for Xander when the latter creates a forest, then realizes Xander isn't around and promises to bill the man later.

Ace Attorney

  • In Phoenix Wright: Ghosts of the Past Trucy gets accidentally punched in the face by Iris resulting in massive case of Broken Pedestal for Trucy and equally huge My God, What Have I Done? for Iris. Later Trucy finds out that Iris had a twin sister and immediately assumes it was her, not Iris who did the above, claiming Iris would never do that. No one denies. In a Pet the Dog moment Dahlia herself later admits to it. Unlike most examples Trucy's conclusion was actually Metaphorically True: Dahlia was the one who made Iris punch her ("made her" meaning Dahlia was haunting Iris driving her insane and Trucy was accidentally hit when Iris tried to push Dahlia away) and Iris would never do that willingly.

Batman

  • In "Arm Candy", part of the Sorrowful and Immaculate Hearts series, Dick Grayson names a varicolored puppy "Harley" after Harley Quinn; when one of his muggle friends asks if he named it after the motorcycle, he agrees that that's exactly what he did.

Buffyverse

  • In Taaroko's Season 9, this is Vi's reaction to Andrew's reasoning about why he doesn't trust Angel (which amounts to nothing more than "Spike doesn't like Angel so I don't like him"); Vi doesn't agree with that view, but decides it's not worth the effort to try and correct Andrew's 'delusions'.

Calvin and Hobbes

  • Retro Chill: Bob distracts Rupert, Earl, and Retro so Calvin can escape his cell. When they interrogate him, Earl blames it on stupidity. Bob shrugs and nervously says: "Sure, let's go with that."

Castle

  • "Beware of Darkness" features Beckett protecting Julia, a little girl who was the daughter of their latest murder victim. During the investigation, Julia sustains a blow to the head, and when she wakes up she is revealed to have suffered a form of selective amnesia that results in her believing that Kate is her mother, to the extent that she can't even remember her original mother. To avoid confusing Julia, Kate accepts going along with the idea that she is Julia's mother, but she keeps mementos of Julia's real mother in case Julia regains her memory.

A Certain Magical Index

  • A Certain Droll Hivemind: Mikoto gave her clones strict instructions to stay away from Kuroko, even giving them a full list of her patrol routes to ensure that they'd never run into her. Kuroko is infamously obsessed with Mikoto, but since she didn't explain why, the clones assumed that Kuroko would murder them to increase her level (even though that's not actually how levels work).
"'We are just Level Three so the two of us do not stand a chance,' Misaka-11111 says fearfully," I say fearfully. "'She could teleport right up to us and get us in a hold. Then we would be helpless against her,' she adds," I add. "'She would do cruel things to us for her own enjoyment.'"
"'And then she would kill us to increase her Level,' Misaka-10032 says, shaking in her shoes," Misaka-10032 says.
Kamijou Touma frowns. "Wait, why do they think—"
"You! Shut up! I'm keeping them safe from Kuroko!" Misaka Mikoto says, indicating clearly that she is the best big sister. "You know what she'd do if she realised I had clones!"
He nods. "Yeah, I suppose you are."

Danny Phantom

  • In one story of the Facing the Future Series, Ghost Tucker says this word-for-word to Sam to cover up that he didn't know what she was talking about.

Fate Series

  • Fate/Long Night: Rin Tohsaka gets a hot spring installed in her house. She bathes in it and it feels so good that she falls asleep and misses class. Her classmate Ayako Mitsuzuri visits her asking why she didn't show up for class. When she sees Rin is flushed from being in the hot spring for so long, she assumes Rin has a fever and Rin goes along with it.

Final Fantasy

Harry Potter

  • In The Chosen Six, after Sirius becomes the Head of the House of Black after Walburga's death, he remarks that he doesn't really need a house-elf. Kreacher immediately assumes this means Sirius was going to free him, which prompts Kreacher to throw away his pride and grovel in the hopes of avoiding the dishonor. However, Sirius really just planned on giving Kreacher to Narcissa, a “proper” pure-blood whom Kreacher had actually wanted to go serve. Nevertheless, Sirius decides pretend as if Kreacher's promise of loyalty convinced him to change his mind and let Kreacher continue serving the House of Black. This ultimately leads to Kreacher becoming genuinely loyal to Sirius, as well as Sirius growing much more appreciative of Kreacher.
  • In The Consort Tournament the Flamels were bitten by a vampire when they were in their mid-fifties but hid it because of the wizarding perception of vampires. When a rumor started several decades later that Nicolas had created a Philosopher's Stone, he got the goblins to charm a large ruby to appear as whatever people believed it to be.
  • In Harry Potter and the Marauders of the Mind Harry has the spirits of his parents, Remus and Sirius stuck in his head after he comes back to life. This results in harming himself during full moons due to the influence of Remus' werewolf side. After the first occurrence Snape's portrait accuses Harry of having been bitten during or shortly after the Final Battle. Naturally, Harry goes along with it.
  • In Harry Potter and the Phoenix Burning a deaged, time-traveling Harry ends up going to school with his parents and their friends. When he deposits the Ravenclaw diadem Horcrux on Dumbledore's desk during Christmas break his first year, Dumbledore chides him...for using the diadem to obtain knowledge an eleven-year-old couldn't possibly possess. Harry pretends to be appropriately sheepish while hoping that's the end of it.
  • This is Played for Laughs in Oh God, Not Again!.
Sirius: Top box. It was part of my reparation. Of course, the rest of it went to buying Harry a Firebolt but...
Harry: You don't mind because I'm your godson and you love me?
Sirius: ...Let's go with that, sure.
  • In One Crazy Long Day Harry and Snape try to help an all-wizard town hide its magic aspects from a stranded family of Muggles. The mother comments that they aren't doing a very good job of hiding things - and that they have absolutely no reason to conceal their love for one another. Several of the other townspeople cheerfully add a fake relationship to the general deception.
  • In The Parselmouth of Gryffindor, when the Goblin King mistakes Hermione for a member of a long existing species rather than a new one, Hermione both agrees with him and starts making up facts about her species on the spot.
  • Harry gets a lot of mileage out of this in The Rigel Black Chronicles, to the point where she's a little disturbed by how easily people rationalize any mistakes she makes in her cover. Such as Draco noticing that she's paranoid and jumpy, but assuming that it's because of the (fake) skin hypersensitivity that she claimed to have when she was explaining her reticence about hugs and other affection. The idea that she's covering up being a girl never crosses his mind.
  • In This is Love, This is Not Treason Harry, who's hiding the fact he's gay, feels Ginny's hand creeping up his leg at the Gryffindor table and removes it.
    Ginny: What's wrong love?
Harry: Nothing. Just don't do that.
Ginny: Not a public display of affection kind of guy are you?
Harry: Uh...sure let's go with that.
  • Transmuting Freedom:
Roger Davies: No, not why do you only have two possible traps worked out, why are you trying to figure out the traps in the first place? What's the point?
Cedric Diggory: Don't be stupid, Davies. Clearly, they are trying to figure out whether the [Philosopher's] Stone is adequately protected or not. And if not, add extra protections to it. Right, Oliver?
Oliver Wood: Umm...sure, Cedric. We'll go with that.

High School D×D

  • In Marriage of Heaven and Hell, while Makoto finds Rossweisse trying to drown her sorrows in a bar after Odin leaves her behind after Lunch, a suspicious man mockingly asks Makoto if he's her Dad after he tells the bartender he's "here to take her home" and he replies "Yes. Now back off, creep."

Miraculous Ladybug

  • Bring Me Back Home: Marinette mostly manages to pass herself as Bridgette without arousing too much suspicion, but at one point she gets into a conversation with Félix and tells him a story about trying to dance with Max years ago and accidentally breaking three of his toes, forgetting that Max may not even exist in this universe (at least by that name).
    Félix: Who's Max?
Marinette: (momentarily panicking) Oh, uh, he used to go to our school, but just for a week, and then he left and opened up a deli with his uncle in… uh… Madrid!
Félix: (Fascinating Eyebrow) Did he leave because you broke his toes?
Marinette: Uhh… Yes. It's so embarrassing, don't tell anyone!
Félix: Your secret is safe with me.
  • Played With in Chat Noir's Family, where Chat Noir is asking Ladybug for advise for a gift to a woman he knows whose birthday went pass them (actually Nathalie who's been dealing with an unknown illness). Ladybug initially guesses that he is referring to his girlfriend, and Chat initially protests that isn't the case and almost says that he meant his father's assistant, but decides to go with his father's girlfriend so he wouldn't risk his Secret Identity.
  • The start of Unconventional Scenarios is that Gabriel Agreste left his computer on with up-to-date information on Ladybug and Chat Noir, and when Adrien finds it he thinks his father is a massive fan of the heroes. Gabriel goes along with it because the alternative is admitting he's the supervillain Hawkmoth and he's trying to find out the heroes' weaknesses, even if means pretending to be the heroes' biggest fan.

My Hero Academia

  • One Stands for All: When All Might attempts to give a Be Yourself speech to Izuku, the boy interprets it to mean that if every hero was like All Might, villains would be able to easily counter them. All Might decides to run with it since Izuku wasn't understanding why he shouldn't try so hard to imitate him.

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

  • Aggro-Culture: When Jitterbug asks Aunt Nancy if he is her fairy godspider, Nancy is amenable to the description.
  • In The Apprentice, the Student, and the Charlatan, when Nova is soliciting help from Rarity to put together a date for Twilight, he confides that he and Twilight had kissed in the past, but that it wasn't some magical and transformative experience for him (even though it was). Rarity wonders if it was because the kiss was too inexperienced. Nova is about to answer honestly (he had a panic attack in the middle of it), but then just goes with that.
  • Pony POV Series: At one point, a grown up, alternate universe version of Spike called Nightdrake Bannerette arrives and rescues Rarity and the Cutie Mark Crusaders. Before he departs, he asks the CMC to encourage Spike not to give up on trying to win Rarity's heart. When the CMC tell Spike the story, he automatically assumes Bannerette is his and Rarity's Kid from the Future and that this means he and Rarity are destined to be together. The CMC, who know Bannerette's true nature, try to correct him, but he is too excited to listen, so they shrug and just let him think that.

Naruto

  • Due to some confusion in The Accidental Sensei, Anko ends up the teacher of Team 7 while Kakashi gets her assignment as an Academy teacher. Sarutobi was going to fix the problem, but instead goes along with Anko's assumption that she was given a genin team as a show of trust and Kakashi's assumption that he was being punished for his previous negligence.
  • A Case Study in the Sturdiness of the Rookie 9 plays this for laughs, then drama. Shino, Sakura, and Chouji misinterpret Kakashi's extremely delayed arrival after they're assigned to Team 7 as a sign that he wants them to track him down as a Secret Test of Character. Kakashi exploits this, encouraging the trio to continue misreading his neglect as teaching them how to be independent and self-sufficient. However, this comes back to haunt him when they learn something he never intended to teach them as a result: namely, that it's okay to betray your allies so long as you get the job done.
  • Naru-Hina Chronicles: Rokuro has taken over Kakashi's body while the latter is on a mission with Team Gai. The latter team eventually notices that his behiavor is strange. Gai then wrongfully realizes something:
Gai: Oh?! Why didn't I see it before. I know why you're so acting strange.
Rokuro: Ummm... You do!? [thinking] Damn it. He knows I'm inhabiting Kaka...
Gai: [smiling and pointing at "Kakashi"] Yes! We haven't had a challenge in a while. And our rivalry is so powerful, you're eager for more.
Rokuro: [Sweat Dropping] Err... Umm... Sure Gai... That's it.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

  • Rise of the Minisukas: Rei steps into her apartment and is greeted with a pie to her face, courtesy of the Minisuka "Prankster". Rei mentions she has not seen Prankster for weeks, undoubtedly because her nemesis has spent a long time plotting her next masterstroke. Unwilling to admit out loud that she has spent those weeks lost in the woods, Prankster dons her best "Yes, that is EXACTLY what happened!" expression.

The Owl House

  • In Weakness, Amity has a habit of squeaking every time Luz surprises her. Not knowing about Amity's crush on her, Luz asks if the squeaking is some form of echolocation (since Amity is a vampire).
"Yes! This is a perfectly normal vampire thing that vampires do." Amity quickly agreed.

Pokémon

  • Ashes of the Past: Thanks to a Time Crash, a Sylveon (up until then a Pokémon imagined up by Molly Hale and made real) is present at the beginning of time, causing Arceus to notice her typing and, despite not planning for it, incorporate it into the universe's creation, creating the Fairy-type and adding it via Cosmic Retcon.
  • Hyphen: Astra is a Ralts (later Kirlia) who disguises herself as a human to become a Pokémon Trainer. People around her often hand her the excuses that she needs to keep up her masquerade:
    • In Chapter 12, the Petalburg Poké Mart clerk guesses that she's albino due to her white skin and red eyes, and that's why she keeps herself out of the sun with a full-body cloak and large hat.
    • In Chapter 16, after she battles NPC trainer Lady Cindy, the latter asks if Astra had used her violin music to convey orders to her Pokémon. She adopts that excuse for every battle afterward to disguise her Telepathy.

RWBY

  • In Linked in Life and Love, Roman finds himself having to do this when Ozpin declares him his deep-cover agent in the criminal underworld to get him off the hook from General Ironwood.
  • This trope is Jaune's motto in Professor Arc. Almost everything he doesn't achieve by not noticing the subtext (such as impressing Cinder with his courage when he genuinely didn't realize she was threatening him) is accomplished by letting someone come up with a theory about him and rolling with it.
  • White Sheep:
    • When Jaune is learning to swim in a Beacon pool, Yang ogles Cinder in a bikini. Weiss thinks she's ogling Jaune, and Yang decides not to correct her.
    • Sapphire assumes Emerald is part of Jaune's harem, and orders the Grimm not to harm her. Yang is about to explain that Emerald isn't involved, but Emerald stops her because it's the only thing keeping her alive.
    • Lionheart keeps assuming Jaune has the most villainous motives possible, even for simple requests like food and shelter. Jaune eventually stops trying to explain himself.

The Saga of Tanya the Evil

  • The General's Child: When General Lergen dies, he wakes up several years before the war. After spending a day freaking out over having traveled through time into his younger body, Lergen promptly heads out to find the orphanage Tanya lives in to adopt her and hopefully prevent Germania from losing the coming war by keeping her out of it. His servants, family, and coworkers all assume Tanya is his biological daughter, citing the facts from their perspectivenote . Lergen puts in a token effort to convince them otherwise before simply going along with it as it's easier to explain than time travel.

The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System: Ren Zha Fanpai Zijiu Xitong

  • In Roulette Wheel Of Fate, Shen Qingqiu goes along with the assumption that he's a seer because it tidily explains why he knows things he really shouldn't, and because he cannot outright reveal he's actually a transmigrator.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

  • The Ouroboros: When the six spacefarers call home to touch base with their counterparts and learn more about how they're supposed to close the supposed Stable Time Loop, Donnie mentions how they need to be mindful of the Butterfly Effect. Alt!Donnie latches onto that as an excuse to avoid explaining anything, citing 'spoilers'.

Warcraft

  • A more dramatic example occurs in Diplomacy when the Lich King speaks with Jaina and Thrall via magical projection. He makes a remark about "his body having fond memories of Jaina", which causes her to recoil in horror. Later, Garrosh makes a comment about Arthas' honor that causes Thrall to realize everyone assumes Arthas raped Jaina. Thrall, Tandred, and Aegwynn decide to run with the idea to help galvanize both the Alliance and Horde against the Scourge.
