However, this comes back to haunt him when they learn something he never intended to teach them as a result: namely, that it's okay to [[spoiler:betray your allies]] so long as you get the job done.

* A more dramatic example occurs in ''Fanfic/{{Diplomacy}}'' when the Lich King speaks with Jaina and Thrall via magical projection. He makes a remark about "his body having fond memories of Jaina", which causes her to recoil in horror. Later, Garrosh makes a comment about Arthas' honor that causes Thrall to realize everyone assumes Arthas raped Jaina. * This is played for laughs in ''Fanfic/OhGodNotAgain''.
-->'''[[spoiler:Sirius]]:''' Top box. It was part of my reparation. Of course, the rest of it went to buying Harry a Firebolt but...\\
'''Harry:''' You don't mind because [[spoiler:I'm your godson]] and you love me?\\
'''[[spoiler:Sirius]]:''' ...Let's go with that, sure.
* In ''Fanfic/TheParselmouthOfGryffindor'', when the Goblin King mistakes Hermione for a member of a long existing species rather than a new one, Hermione both agrees with him and starts making up facts about her species on the spot.
* ''Fanfic/RetroChill'': Bob [[WeNeedADistraction distracts]] Rupert, Earl, and Retro so Calvin can escape his cell. When they interrogate him, Earl blames it on stupidity. Bob shrugs and nervously says: "Sure, let's go with that."
* In the ''Fanfic/TheFifthAct'', the Nibelheim villagers assumes that the [[PeggySue time-traveling older Cloud Strife]] is a relative of the younger Cloud Strife. Cloud chooses to go along with it and tells them that he's a paternal uncle.
* Due to some confusion in ''[[http://archiveofourown.org/works/412689/chapters/685050 The Accidental Sensei]]'', Anko ends up the teacher of Team 7 while Kakashi gets her assignment as an Academy teacher. Sarutobi was going to fix the problem but instead goes along with Anko's assumption that she was given a genin team as a show of trust and Kakashi's assumption that he was being punished for his previous negligence.

This results in harming himself during full moons due to the influence of Remus' werewolf side. After the first occurrence Snape's portrait accuses Harry of having been bitten during or shortly after the Final Battle. Naturally, Harry goes along with it.

'''Cedric Diggory:''' Don't be stupid, Davies. Clearly, they are trying to figure out whether the [Philosopher's] Stone is adequately protected or not. And if not, add extra protections to it. Right, Oliver?\\
'''Oliver Wood:''' Umm...sure, Cedric. We'll go with that.
* In ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11024841/1/One-Crazy-Long-Day One Crazy Long Day]]'' Harry and Snape try to help an all-wizard town hide its magic aspects from a stranded family of Muggles. The mother comments that they aren't doing a very good job of hiding things - and that they have absolutely no reason to conceal their love for one another. Several of the other townspeople cheerfully add a fake relationship to the general deception.
* In ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/6820445/15/Harry-Potter-and-The-Phoenix-Burning Harry Potter and the Phoenix Burning]]'' a deaged, time-traveling Harry ends up going to school with his parents and their friends. When he deposits the Ravenclaw diadem [[SoulJar Horcrux]] on Dumbledore's desk during Christmas break his first year, Dumbledore chides him...for using the diadem to obtain knowledge an eleven-year-old couldn't possibly possess. Harry pretends to be appropriately sheepish while hoping that's the end of it.
* In ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11281809/1/Phoenix-Wright-Ghosts-of-the-Past Phoenix Wright: Ghosts of the Past]]'' Trucy [[spoiler: gets accidentally punched in the face]] by Iris resulting in massive case of BrokenPedestal for Trucy and equally huge MyGodWhatHaveIDone for Iris. Later Trucy finds out that Iris had a twin sister and immediately assumes it was ''her'', not Iris who did the above, claiming Iris would never do that. No one denies. In a PetTheDog moment Dahlia herself later admits to it. Unlike most examples Trucy's conclusion was actually MetaphoricallyTrue: [[spoiler:Dahlia ''was'' the one who made Iris punch her ("made her" meaning Dahlia was haunting Iris driving her insane and Trucy was accidentally hit when Iris tried to push Dahlia away) and Iris would never do that willingly]].
* In "Arm Candy", part of the ''Fanfic/SorrowfulAndImmaculateHearts'' series, Dick Grayson names a varicolored puppy "Harley" after Harley Quinn; when one of his muggle friends asks if he named it after the motorcycle, he agrees that that's exactly what he did.
* In one story of the ''Fanfic/FacingTheFutureSeries'', [[spoiler:Ghost]] Tucker says this word-for-word to Sam to cover up that he didn't know what she was talking about.
* ''Fanfic/PonyPOVSeries'': At one point, a grown up, alternate universe version of Spike called Nightdrake Bannerette arrives and rescues Rarity and the Cutie Mark Crusaders. Before he departs, he asks the CMC to encourage Spike not to give up on trying to win Rarity's heart. When the CMC tell Spike the story, he automatically assumes Bannerette is his and Rarity's KidFromTheFuture and that this means he and Rarity are destined to be together. The CMC, who know Bannerette's true nature, try to correct him, but he is too excited to listen, so they shrug and just let him think that.
* ''Fanfic/FateLongNight'': Rin Tohsaka gets a hot spring installed in her house. She bathes in it and it feels so good that she falls asleep and misses class. Her classmate Ayako Mitsuzuri visits her asking why she didn't show up for class. When she sees Rin is flushed from being in the hot spring for so long, she assumes Rin has a fever and Rin goes along with it.
* [[WesternAnimation/YoungJustice Robin]] is convinced that [[Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer Xander and Willow]] have two different fake identities in ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12761489/13/A-brand-new-day A Brand New Day]]'' and is amazed at how thorough the second set is, being unable to find a single hint that it's false. Neither of the two correct him that they only have a single set of fake identities and the "second set" is real. To be fair to Robin, their real identities have some odd history attached to them, such as both being kicked out of boy scouts before enrolling in girl scouts and being officially declared twins despite having birthdays several months apart[[note]]They enrolled in both under "Alex and Will" as those are androgynous names, and Xander was adopted as an infant before Sheila knew she was pregnant with Willow. The pair tell everyone they're twins so they stop hearing that they aren't really brother and sister[[/note]].
* ''Fanfic/ASubtleKnife'':
** When Kid Flash accidentally reveals the whole Team believes Artemis is actually Green Arrow's bastard daughter, she's very happy to let them think she's related to a genuine hero rather than being a villain's offspring.
** [[spoiler: Also, Edge knows that claiming to be a SelfInsert from the "real" world would be a ''bad'' strategy so when his teammates peg his home universe as Earth Bet he's quite relieved.]]
* This trope is Jaune's motto in ''Fanfic/ProfessorArc''. Almost everything he doesn't achieve by not noticing the subtext (such as impressing Cinder with his courage when he genuinely didn't realize she was threatening him) is accomplished by letting someone come up with a theory about him and rolling with it.
* ''Fanfic/AshesOfThePast'': Thanks to a TimeCrash, a Sylveon (up until then a Pokémon imagined up by Molly Hale and made real) is present at the beginning of time, causing Arceus to notice her typing and, despite not planning for it, incorporate it into the universe's creation, creating the Fairy-type and adding it via CosmicRetcon.
* In ''Fanfic/LostInCamelot'', when Uther assumes that Bo and Kenzi's clothing was forced on them by the sorcerer who sent then to Camelot, the two decide to go with that assumption as what they've seen of Camelot makes it clear that the kingdom's more conservative dress code may not approve of the idea that Kenzi wears such a skimpy 'skirt' and Bo wears trousers by their own choice.
* Harry gets a lot of mileage out of this in ''Fanfic/TheRigelBlackChronicles'', to the point where she's a little disturbed by how easily people rationalize any mistakes she makes in her cover. Such as [[spoiler:Draco noticing that she's paranoid and jumpy, but assuming that it's because of the (fake) skin hypersensitivity that she claimed to have when she was explaining her reticence about hugs and other affection. The idea that she's covering up being a girl never crosses his mind]].
* In ''[[Fanfic/TaarokosBuffyTheVampireSlayer Taaroko's Season 9]]'', this is Vi's reaction to Andrew's reasoning about why he doesn't trust Angel (which amounts to nothing more than "Spike doesn't like Angel so I don't like him"); Vi doesn't agree with that view, but decides it's not worth the effort to try and correct Andrew's 'delusions'.
* In ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12652330/9/eXtra-power-twin eXtra power twin]]'' Harry conceals his face at Kings Cross so he won't be recognized as his celebrity brother's estranged twin.
-->'''Ginny:''' Are you so good looking people will go blind when they see you? Is that why you're hiding?\\
'''Harry:''' Ok. Let's go with that excuse.
* In ''Fanfic/AmazingFantasy'', Peter leaves out rusty nails and other dangerous objects to test and train Izuku's SpiderSense. Izuku is not reassured when Peter refuses to look him in the eye afterward.
-->'''Peter:''' Oh thank God, it actually worked this time.\\
'''Izuku:''' Like you knew it would… right, Peter-san?\\
'''Peter:''' ''[refuses to make eye contact]'' Rrrriiiight. Yup, sure kid.
* In ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5961543/2/This-is-Love-This-is-Not-Treason This is Love, This is Not Treason]]'' Harry, who's hiding the fact he's gay, feels Ginny's hand creeping up his leg at the Gryffindor table and removes it.
-->'''Ginny:''' What's wrong love?\\
'''Harry:''' Nothing. Just don't do that.\\
'''Ginny:''' Not a public display of affection kind of guy are you?\\
'''Harry:''' Uh...sure let's go with that.

* ''Fanfic/BringMeBackHome'': Marinette mostly manages to pass herself as Bridgette without arousing too much suspicion, but at one point she gets into a conversation with Félix and tells him a story about trying to dance with Max years ago and accidentally breaking three of his toes, forgetting that Max may not even exist in this universe (at least by that name).
-->'''Félix''': Who's Max?\\
'''Marinette''': (''momentarily panicking'') Oh, uh, he used to go to our school, but just for a week, and then he left and opened up a deli with his uncle in… uh… Madrid!\\
'''Félix''': (''FascinatingEyebrow'') Did he leave because you broke his toes?\\
'''Marinette''': Uhh… Yes. It's so embarrassing, don't tell anyone!\\

* In ''Fanfic/TheApprenticeTheStudentAndTheCharlatan'', when Nova is soliciting help from Rarity to put together a date for Twilight, he confides that he and Twilight had kissed in the past, but that it wasn't some magical and transformative experience for him (even though it was). Rarity wonders if it was because the kiss was too inexperienced. Nova is about to answer honestly (he had a panic attack in the middle of it), but then just goes with that.
* In ''[[https://archiveofourown.org/works/24514813/chapters/60376324#workskin Weakness]]'', Amity has a habit of squeaking every time Luz surprises her. Not knowing about Amity's crush on her, Luz asks if the squeaking is some form of echolocation (since Amity is a vampire).
