Shout Out / Great Teacher Onizuka

Go To

GTO has tons of Shout Outs:

  • In the Musashino class Onizuka teaches as part of his training, he thinks one of the girls looks like she's from a Mad Max movie.
  • As he's walking to the interview room at Holy Forest, Onizuka is humming "Rock and Roll High School" to himself.note
  • Onizuka steals a copy of Final Fantasy VII from the teachers' office.
  • Principal Sakurai tells Onizuka he'll be a superhero like National Kid.
  • Noboru has Final Fantasy VII, Dragon Quest, and Resident Evil 2, all of which Onizuka asks to borrow.
  • Uchiyamada compares Onizuka's damage to his car to Godzilla or King Kong falling on it.
  • Onizuka notices his right arm is swollen, and compares himself to Popeye.
  • The fighting game Murai is playing in one early chapter is a triple reference: it has blocky polygonal models like the first Virtua Fighter, the character Murai is playing as is clearly supposed to be Joe Yabuki (complete with reference to his death at the end), and his opponent is a bear named Kuma.
  • Fist of the North Star: Onizuka draws Kenshiro's scars on his chest (plus some Cross-Popping Veins) and loudly says "I'm Kenshiro!" (and after saying "I'm here to save Yuria!" in which 'Yuria' (Kenshiro's Damsel in Distress of a lover) can also be spelled as 'Julia', the name of the mother of Kunio (who himself, is a shoutout to the Kunio-kun games), his student he's currently trying to save), then beats up some thugs with the Hokuto Hyakeretsu Ken. This is after he (with bowling balls on his hands) had drawn whiskers on his face and claimed to be Doraemon.
  • In that same arc, while Murai and his friends are hanging from a tree in sleeping bags as human boxing bags, the man holding practice mitts for a boxer looks just like the coach; Danpei Tange in Tomorrow's Joe.
  • Fujiyoshi compares the car chase Onizuka took him, Kusano, and Murai on to the movie Speed. When he asks how they managed to get away, Onizuka says "The drivers always manage to get away. Don't you read Initial D?"
  • When Murai pranks Onizuka by giving him a lighter that blasts flames in his face, he laughs and says he "went up like Michael Jackson". When an angry Onizuka turns around and shows the damage to his hair, they say he looks like Shaft.
  • Kunio says Onizuka is "protected by some kind of demon spirit. Like Rasputin or something."
  • Fukuroda, in disbelief that Onizuka could have beaten him on the track, compares him to Cyborg 009.
  • When playing dolls with Tomoko, Onizuka drops a few lines of "Born to Run" when he introduces his biker character Kenji.
  • One of Onizuka's sand sculptures resembles the famous hoax photo of two men with a short grey alien between them.
  • In Chapter 39, Fukuroda is singing "YMCA" and "We Are the Champions" at a karaoke bar.
  • An obscure one: When Onizuka is wearing an elephant costume, Uchiyamada calls him "Tantor", the ape word for elephants in Tarzan (and the name of a specific elephant in the Disney film).
  • When Murai, Kusano, and Fujiyoshi are sneaking into the school, they say they have "the mugs of politicians"note  and "the heart of Lupin".
  • Onizuka lists one of his heroes as Tiger Mask.

  • When giving a speech at an assembly, Onizuka breaks into song — specifically the songs of Eikichi Yazawa, who Fujisawa has stated inspired Onizuka's first name.
  • Urumi blackmails Onizuka into being her "genie", mentioning the story of Aladdin. Onizuka mentions not wanting to pretend to be "some Shazam! guy out of a comic book".
  • When Kikuchi, Murai, and a few other boys steal Uchiyamada's Cresta, Kikuchi says he can drive since he's aced Gran Turismo. Much later, Fujiyoshi says the same thing when he steals a fancy car to take Miyabi for a ride.
  • When one of the female students thinks she's destined to fall in love with Onizuka (and hates this), she calls him a "blond bug" and says she'll have to "have his larva" and give birth to the next generation like in The Fly (1986).
  • Murai's friends mention he bought several video games including World Cup France '98, Deep Fear and Virtual Prison.
  • In Kunio's Imagine Spot of his mom getting engaged to Onizuka, Onizuka has "The Rose of Versailles eyes".
  • At a video store, Fujiyoshi is recommending The Ring to Murai.

  • When the students point out he's doing a terrible job at counterfeiting, Onizuka asks "What would the great illustrator Super Doctor K say if he were here?"
  • When Onizuka suggests searching for Buried Treasure to get the 8 million yen, his students ask if he thinks this is The Kindaichi Case Files (which Onizuka was a fan of back in GTO: The Early Years).
  • After Onizuka takes a job picking up the remains of those who committed suicide by jumping in front of trains, he sings a morbid version of the Bachman Turner Overdrive song "Taking Care of Business".
    Taking care of business
    Everyday
    Cleaning up the corpses
    On my way

  • Okinoshima remarks that he feels like Sonny Chiba when he's chasing a kidnapped Tomoko in a car chase with explosions.
  • When they find out Onizuka's been using them for free labor in Okinawa, Urumi calls him Captain Ahab.

  • The last opponent in the 100 man arm wrestling competition is a guy named Jason who wears a hockey mask.
  • When Mayu's in the hospital, a Chest Burster like the one from Alien erupts from him as a prank.
  • This exchange:

  • There are several references to Go Nagai works, too: in one episode, he cosplayed like Devilman for no apparent reason in class. Shortly after he got Tomoko to dress like Cutey Honey. And in another episode he cut in half a human body anatomical model and dressed himself with one of the halves to dress himself, resembling a grisly Baron Ashura.
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion:
    • Noboru has the walls of his room plastered with Evangelion posters, and in the Beach Episode he makes a sand pyramid similar to the one Shinji made in the "sandbox scene" in The End of Evangelion.
    • Heck, Noboru and Anko may as well be an outright reference to Shinji and Asuka, with their appearances and how their dynamic works.
    • Onizuka has a poster of Death and Rebirth on his wall.
    • When Onizuka bets on himself against Fukuroda, he says he wants to use his winnings to buy Evangelion trading cards.

  • In Chapter 69, Uchiyamada rushes to stop Onizuka before he gets carried off by the cops, "like Kato in Kinpachi-sensei part 2".
