A Souls RPG Banner

'Souls is an advanced, play-by-post, post-apocalyptic werewolf and werecanine RPG set in Nova Scotia, Canada. It was established in 2001, and is still going strong as a RPG today!

Backstory:

During the Cold War, scientists and researchers in southern California began experimenting with genetics, attempting to splice creatures and men to one another. In 1988, near the end of the war and their research, something went horribly wrong—their end-work, a young man infused with animal genes and intended to work for the military's ends, became infected with a highly contagious virus of unknown origins.

The virus, nicknamed "Z456" in the brief days of media exposure it received, spread incredibly quickly. Z46 was particularly insidious due to its brief but silent incubation period, during which it was fully contagious. Unknowingly infected humans traveled and brought the sickness with them; global transportation only facilitated the spread of the virus. It caused most symptomatic humans to die within three days, and within six weeks, contemporary society was decimated, replaced by a nightmarish and bleak place. Ninety-seven percent of the human population was killed, and only the small percentage to enjoy a natural immunity survived in isolated corners of the world (South Korea, Japan, New York, Polynesia, and the Caribbean).

As the years passed and the cities fell slowly to decay, the animal populations began to thrive again, and some discovered additional benefits. The Canis genus in particular profited greatly: wolves, dogs, and coyotes found themselves with the ability to shapeshift from their natural form to a humanoid two-legged form with dangerous, cat-like claws. Beyond the physical advantages, their intelligence and senses seemed to sharpen, and from the wreckage of human society rose the Luperci. Canines of Europe and Asia adapted to humanized lifestyles, mastering fire and living in old human buildings. Canines of North and South America, however, retained the typical canine lifestyle, living in traditional packs as their ancestors had for thousands of years prior.

In 2001 in Canada, a cluster of packs developed; these three packs became the foundation of what would be known as Bleeding Souls. A number of packs and a coyote clan flourished in this area for some time, but in the early spring of 2008, a wildfire erupted and destroyed the land. This forced the canines to move westward to Nova Scotia and settle in and around the Halifax area. Here they would establish 'Souls and attempt to rebuild, reforming some of their former ties and establishing new ones.

This website contains the following tropes:

  • Absolute Xenophobe: Hybrid. He is misogynistic, xenophobic, and sexist.
  • Action Mom: Skye and Tayui
  • All Gays are Promiscuous: Sebastian Auditore. Voted Biggest Flirt of 2012, his incredible skill at seducing males knows no bounds. From shy virgins to grizzled, jaded older men to the supposedly heterosexual, Sebastian virtually always manages to get in their pants within two meetings at most.
    • Inferni's flamboyantly gay archer, Asher Thompson, wants to be monogamous but acts like this just to get attention, awww. :c
  • Badass Preacher: Gabriel
  • Berserk Button: Pretty much everyone has something that strikes a chord with them.
  • Big Ol' Unibrow: Gabriel, mostly of the Type II variant, but could be argued that he is also the Type I. Note that most art of Gabriel with a unibrow is one big lolfest.
  • Big, Screwed-Up Family:
    • The Lykoi family has a hippie sect within it as well as many inter-family disputes, such as the split between Eris Eternity and her mother Kaena Lykoi, as well as Kerberos Lykoi's attempted murder of Kaena (his mother, too!) as well
  • Blood Knight: Hybrid; there isn't much else he lives for.
  • Break the Cutie:
    • Orin, after the incident with Argul. It left her deeply disturbed.
    • Savina and Parker, after Nuki murdered Denali. Nuki drugged and murdered Denali and then joined Crimson Dreams. She injured Parker and eventually Savina found out and drove Nuki away.
    • Liam's attack on Sky's puppy in Cercatori d'Arte broke everyone in the pack. They cast Liam out and came close to casting out Taliesin as well out of fear that he had the same evil inside of him.
  • Bow and Sword in Accord: Sebastian Auditore, with a pair of shortswords to complement his bow.
  • Camp Gay: Strelein, possibly others
  • Canada, Eh?: 'Souls RPG is set in Nova Scotia, Canada.
  • Combat Sadomasochist: Samael Lykoi is likely the only one who fits this bill. He loved receiving and dishing out pain.
  • Cosy Catastrophe: The world is over, but it's all fun for the werewolves!
  • Despair Event Horizon: Tayui, after Noir's death
  • Deus Angst Machina: Laruku, forever (and still even in his death)
  • Disappeared Dad: Very, very common. Colibri Soul's first litter suffered this with Acid, as did Colibri Haki's with Toby... sort of.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: Onus, maybe Tayui
  • Hulking Out: Octavius when Judas is threatened, and Savina when *anyone* threatens her brood. She attached Hybrid when she found him harassing Apollo, and also went into hulk mode when Aniwaya attacked Crimson Dreams.
  • If You Kill Him, You Will Be Just Like Him!: Alaine, after Talitha murders Caillen
  • Ethical Slut: Sebastian Auditore. In spades.
  • Faceless Goons: Dahlia/Inferni war temporary characters! The Boreas plot has really ramped up the faceless goons since all of the Boreas wolves were Non-Player Characters and controlled by different roleplayers.
  • Fallen Hero: Conri, after the Lighthouse Murders
  • Family Relationship Switcheroo:
    • Halo was originally believed to be the daughter of Vitium Lykoi, but is actually the daughter of Samael Lykoi.
    • The parentage of Halo's second litter is still unknown.
  • Fantastic Racism: Inferni's view on wolves as well as Boreas' view on coyotes.
  • Freudian Excuse: Many characters at 'Souls
  • Gay Cowboy: Sebastian Auditore intends to make one out of a certain Wayne McCoy...
  • Genki Girl: Pixie Frost, among others
  • Hates Everyone Equally: Jefferson
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Hybrid/Gabriel, Savina/Anu, Jefferson/Dawali, and many more.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Skoll. Once you got to know him, he was a caring character but was weighed down by previous run-ins with leadership and his warrior image.
  • Hippie Parents: Razekiel, Rikka, Clover, China, Micah... I'm sensing a pattern.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Noir, Dalgina, and Eclipse are all examples of pure innocence.
  • Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: Following the death of Noir Aston, Tayui and Attila Aston could both fall into this category. They are both willing to go to extreme measures to see that 'justice' prevails.
  • Kill the Cutie: Noir, Denali, Liliana, and Lowry.
  • Let's Mock the Monsters: Everyone makes fun of Hybrid. And he's too dumb to realize they're just egging him on!
  • Mama Bear: Savina, Skye, Tayui
  • Manly Gay: Hybrid, arguably
  • The Napoleon: Enkiel, Mistral, Zana.
  • Nice Guy: A fair few.
  • Post-Apocalyptic Dog: Everybody!
  • Realistic Diction Is Unrealistic: Everyone, ever.
  • Sorry, I'm Gay:
    • Strel/Rikka, subverted
    • Hybrid/ Anselm, subverted. Hybrid hits on Anselm and Anselm has to explain that he's not gay and not at all interested. This of course confuses Hybrid because who wouldn't want to be gay for him?
    • Hybrid/Gabriel, subverted. Hybrid was most likely in love with Gabriel and didn't try to hide it. Gabriel gave Hybrid a beat down, but that didn't stop him from loving him.
  • Speech Impediment: Claudius and Micah, though the latter only stutters because he shakes so much.
  • Spirit Advisor: Ani Wayan spirit guides
  • Take Up My Sword:
    • Mordulin, when Omoi passed Shadowed Stars on to her, after which point she renamed it to Jaded Shadows
    • Tayui and Fatin when Mordulin passed the pack on to them
    • Laruku, who inherited Clouded Tears and was initially not very interested in being a leader, but came to appreciate it later in life.
    • Skye, when Shawchert left Cercatori d'Arte to her.
  • Tangled Family Tree: A lot of the families have crossed lines, some to the point where the families are more or less indistinguishable or different branches crossed with other branches, producing characters which share the same last name... but are actually only distantly related.
    • de le Poer family: This family is very closely linked to the Lykoi family because of Ahren's (de le Poer) litter with Kaena (Lykoi) produced a number of grandchildren and more! There are also many other branches, beginning with the split between Estrella and Nosferatu, and again with Nosferatu's children: Shaitan, Azrael, and Damian.
    • Sadira/Soul and Lykoi family: Haku Soul and Firefly Sadira are first cousins. One of their sons, Conor, had his son Itachi with his aunt, Halo (part of the Lykoi and Soul families). Itachi is romantically involved with China, who is his cousin once-removed.
    • Massacre family: Asphyxia had a litter with each Massacre brother, making her children doubly related. Her son, Hybrid, had children with his sister's daughter, Talitha.
    • Stormbringer family: this family is very closely linked to the Oriel family. Kol's mate Elliot was actually a distant Stormbringer relative. Kol descends from Crow's side of the family, while Elliot is from Ravyn's side. There are a number of Soul/Stormbringer characters who have taken on the Soulstorm surname to distinguish themselves from their numerous relatives. More recently, distant cousins Lilin Soulstorm and Saul Stormbringer became mates.
  • Straight Gay: Sebastian Auditore. Despite an affinity for painting, playing the piano and nearly always bottoming during sex and when he seduces his men, his other qualities definitely turn him away from Camp Gay. He hunts things, practices boxing, stabs things with shortswords, is willing to kill violently for his own and others' freedom, uses his fists as often as his brain when solving disputes and takes no disrespect from subordinates. He will strongly resent any implication that he is feminine.
  • Testosterone Poisoning: Hybrid, subverted
  • Unstoppable Rage: Too many occurrences to count. Heck, there are characters who seem to be purely BUILT on Unstoppable Rage.
  • The Captain: Every goddamn pack leader, EVER
  • War Is Glorious: Inferni I around the Syemv War had a 'War is Glorious' mindset, but have moved away from this especially in Inferni II.
    • Hybrid would be a good example of a remaining adherent.
    • Haku Soul, during the First and Second Dahlian Wars, is another good example.
  • Wall of Text: Those late night ramblings! It's only 2am and I only have 1000 words... let's just keep going! Also, 'Souls Super Writing Month in January is pretty crazy for huge posts!
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Tayui Aston and her 'Sequoia' mission against Salsola. Although her intentions may seem good on the outside, attacking a pack to free their slaves is probably not the best way to teach them the value of good morals!
    • Sebastian Auditore when it comes to freedom. Slavery is abhorrent to him. When he discovered that his friend had been enslaved and tortured by a ten-month old (mid-teenager in human years), he tried to kill the ten-month old more than once to free his friend and would gladly murder every member of a pack that practises slavery with his bare hands.
    • Judas blows this trope out of the water.
  • You Wouldn't Like Me When I'm Angry!: Several characters, including Savina and Ezekiel
