Recap / Trollhunters S3 E12 "The Eternal Knight Part 1"

Go To

Morgana succeeds in calling the Eternal Night and Gunmar begins his invasion of Arcadia.

  • Alien Arts Are Appreciated: Subverted. Krel uses some remixed dolphin noises as music before realizing the audience doesn’t get it and then dials it down to "easy listening", which translates to rave music in Earth terms.
  • All Part of the Show: Claire tries to warn the people at the Battle of the Bands that they are in danger but everyone, including her band mates thinks its all part of their act.
  • Battle Cry: “For glory!”
  • Battle of the Bands: Much like how the battle against Bulgar was on the same day as the school play, the Battle of the Bands that Claire was a part of is not he same day as Gunmar's invasion, Claire trying to get the conventioneers to evacuate.
  • Call-Back: Steve and Eli make an “S” with their hands when they feel like they are needed as Creepslayerz.
  • The Cavalry: Blinky brings the various trolls that are willing to fight Gunmar, including the river trolls Jim met the previous episode, the Wimp Tribe and the original inhabitants of Trollmarket.
  • Damsel in Distress: Darci gets nabbed by a Stalkling, giving Toby (armed with a hammer that allows him to float great distances) a chance to be the one that rescues her.
  • Dark Reprise: The theme that plays during the epic war is the opening Theme Tune Played for Drama
  • Darkest Hour: Morgana and Gunmar have succeeded in bringing about Eternal Night and are invading Arcadia on a day when everyone will be in one easy targeted spot.
Jim: (Preparing for battle) "At their darkest hour, I burn brightest."
  • Flipping the Table: Before Blinky can explain his plan - having constructed a model of the town and everything - Merlin completely trashes the models and dismisses their plan, convinced that his own plan to venture into trollmarket and go after Morgana would be better.
  • Implausible Fencing Powers: Jim enters the battle by leaping and cutting an incoming truck in half with a single swing.
  • Foreshadowing: Deuce seems to have met evil trolls before.
  • Literal Metaphor: As Claire tries to explain the truth to the people, she describes the trolls as something alien living among them. Aja and Krel briefly wonder if she's being literal and that they've been found out.
  • Magic from Technology: Merlin crafts the cradlestone using the microwave.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Subverted, since no one agreed to help him. Merlin did not account that Morgana would have revitalized herself by absorbing the power of the Staff. If the trollhunters agreed to help him, it would have left them defenseless against the near-unstoppable sorceress anyway.
  • Pre Ass Kicking One Liner: “At their darkest hour, I burn brightest.”
  • Smooch of Victory: Given by Darci to Toby after he saves her life.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Nomura gets oggled at by Steve and Eli in slow-motion, her height being one of the things that encapsulates them.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: The claws on Claire’s armor looks not unlike purple-colored versions of Morgana’s talons.
  • Total Eclipse of the Plot: The Eternal Night is a magical eclipse that blots out the sun and creating a Red Filter of Doom.
  • Unwitting Pawn: In-contrast of her opinions to Angor Rot, Morgana sees Gunmar as nothing more than a means to an end, with intentions of offing him after he conquers the world for her.
