It's open mic night and Judy is telling her friends the story of her braces going to be removed while having conflicting feelings about it. Meanwhile, after their toaster bursted into flames, the Tobins try to get a new toaster, only to get the same results.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • Throughout the episode, Judy's friends keep talking about sneaking into an over 21 open mic night, which seems to be where they are in the present. At the end, however, they turn out to be having their own open mic in a basement because they chickened out.
    • Judy's mouth is strategically hidden behind the mic as she tells her story, seeming to imply she got her braces off after all. Turns out no, they're still there.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Gill’s cousin tried a CBD latte, and it made him hallucinate that his friend Allen was a turkey, and he tried to stick his friend in an oven.
Gill: And it wasn’t even Thanksgiving!
  • Continuity Nod: The Tobin-Shaw family photo taken at the end of “My Fart Will Go On Adventure” is now hanging on the wall at the bottom of the stairs in the Tobin’s house.
  • Couch Gag: The boat in the opening is Ace Ventucarp, Fish Detective.
  • Descent into Darkness Song: After Judy decides she doesn't want to get her braces removed and gets on a bus that's full of Judy's teeth, they sing to her "Stay On the Bus", where they happily sing to Judy about staying on the bus so she doesn't lose them. But when Judy wants to get off when the bus passes by things she's interested in, she tries to stop the bus but accidentally drives it off a bridge and into water. Judy tries to escape the sinking bus but her teeth drags her down with them while they sing to her to die with them.
  • Dr. Jerk: Dr. Gary, who starts his first day as a dentist, isn't polite to Judy when he meets her. He originally plans to remove Judy's braces because he thinks it makes her look like a nerd and believes people are making fun of her because of it. Worse, he doesn't even bother to check Judy's dental file to see if her braces are even ready to be removed, but luckily, Dr. Helena, his mother, stopped this when she reveals Judy's teeth isn't ready yet.
  • Framing Device: Judy telling her story at open mic night.
  • Growing Up Sucks: Judy learns that adulthood isn't as great as she thinks it is when she learns from Mr. Golovkin that many adults have gone through many disappointments in their life through his song "Brace Yourself".
  • Made of Explodium: All the novelty toasters the Tobins buy end up catching fire. Justified when Beef discovers that they were plugged in on a 120w outlet; the old toaster was an industrial appliance they got from an Olive Garden after it closed, which is why it could take the extra wattage.
  • Musical Episode: Judy presents her story as a musical.
  • Musicalis Interruptus: The Tobins are singing "A Toast For Today" but stop when their toaster catches on fire.
  • Ode to Food: The Tobins love toast so much that they sing it during "A Toast For Today".
  • Pep-Talk Song: When Judy is struggling with the idea of having her braces remove because it means she's growing up and she's afraid of what's to come in adulthood, her family sings "Pace Yourself", singing that she'll be fine and she just has to pace herself and it's okay to try new things.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a pun of Face/Off, which Judy lampshades and does a Title Drop when explaining to her friend.
  • Shout-Out:
    • To Zach Braff: The actor's smile is mentioned.
    • To Vanilla Sky: In a dream, Judy says she's too young to die, she hasn't seen Vanilla Sky yet. But when she wakes up, she says she has seen that movie.
    • To Little Shop of Horrors: Dr. Gary is a Dr. Jerk dentist introduced riding a motorcycle and wearing a leather jacket, before entering the office and seeing a patient who loves going to the dentist, exactly like Orin Scrivello.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Dr. Gary is just starting his first day as a dentist and he immediately plans on removing Judy's braces without checking to see if they're ready to be removed. When Dr. Helena, a dentist with a lot more experiences and has more knowledge on Judy's teeth, hears what Dr. Gary plans on doing, she immediately shuts that plan down and informs Judy her braces aren't ready to be removed yet and she'll probably need to keep them on for a few years because of how crazy her teeth are.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: Judy is telling the story of how she almost got her braces off at an open mic event, with the flashback in the form of a musical.

♫ Here I am, not a seagull, but a sea-Gill
See? See my hands? What am I holding?
I'm holding ham... ster
My hamster, Peanut Butter
Butter on my toast this morning
As I ate it, I thought about my ham... ster
My hamster, Peanut Butter
Together we can do anything, anything we can do
Except open doors, because he has no thumbs... ster
He's a hamster, not a thumb-ster
Thumbs, thumbs up for our friendship
May it last forever
But hamsters only live to three, so let's make it count
One, two, three
Yeah, I can count, my teacher taught me
My teacher, Mrs. Ham... ster,
My hamster, Peanut Butter. ♫

The Great North S3 Opening

Compared to Season 2, Season 3 of adds even more changes to the opening, including adding a second Couch Gag with Wolf's T-shirt.

How well does it match the trope?
