"That was the entire national leadership of the Underground, John."
Written by Marta Gené Camps
Directed by Dawn Wilkinson

"The only reason you're still breathing is because Reeva thinks Andy and Lorna are loyal and wants to keep them that way."
Evangeline Whedon

Lorna is desperately trying to stop Reeva's murderous plans. The Underground is forced to ask Erg to join an important meeting. The Frost Sisters try to convince Andy to let them help swaying Lauren to their cause.

Tropes:

  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: Erg comes to the Underground meeting because he is pretty sure that Evangeline would reveal the location of the Morlock tunnels should he refuse.
  • Battle in the Center of the Mind: When Lauren can't talk Andy into backing down, she shows off her new strength in their shared dream. Andy blocks the first two shots, but the third sends him flying and he wakes up with a severe nosebleed.
  • Beard of Sorrow: Daniel. He thought his sister and her family really were dead. He even held a funeral for them.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: Clarice becomes disillusioned with the freedom fight after the Underground's remaining leadership is assassinated and joins the Morlocks.
  • The Bus Came Back: Caitlin's brother Daniel (Danny) returns, having last been seen way back in Season 1.
  • Decapitation Strike: Reeva has the entire leadership of the Underground wiped out when they assemble for their meeting.
  • Downer Ending: Evangeline and the rest of the Underground's leadership is apparently wiped out, Clarice leaves the Underground, the Purifiers are revealed to have people way up in the government, and the Frost Sisters are preparing to brainwash Lauren into joining the Inner Circle.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Evangeline and the rest of the Underground's leadership are assassinated by Max, Tico and Heather on Reeva's behest.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Esme is once again worried about her sisters' quick call for violence, this time about bringing Lauren into the Inner Circle, as they immediately propose to kill her should she decline.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Considering their psychic powers, the Frost Sisters seem oblivious to Lorna's mole status. At best, Esme does pick up on Lorna being uncharacteristically inquisitive and warns her against it. Of course, Lorna did threaten them if they dared to read her mind in the previous episodes, but still.
  • Flashback:
    • To Clarice's childhood in her abusive foster home, with her adoptive sister Lilly being killed by her drunk foster dad.
    • Reed remembers a part of his childhood when he listened to Andrea's music box before Otto angrily took it away. This distresses him in the present and triggers Power Incontinence to the point that he has to take more than usual of his Power Limiter serum to suppress his powers.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Despite being seemingly corrupted to the point of threatening their landlord in the previous episode, Lauren is still firmly on the good side and even warns Andy through their shared dream that she's now stronger than him.
  • Headbutting Heroes: There is much tension between John and Erg, as John is very angry about Erg trying to stay out of the mutant freedom fight and Erg insisting that it is a futile battle. It culminates in a small fight between them.
  • Internal Reveal: Reed discovers the note in the music box.
  • Is That a Threat?: Lorna's reaction to Esme's subtle threat.
  • Like a Daughter to Me: Esme holds genuine affection for Lorna's daughter, as she insists to Lorna that she cares about Dawn.
  • Manipulative Bitch: The Frost Sisters manage to convince Andy (after some hesitation) to let them help him "convince" his sister to join the Inner Circle.
  • The Mole: Danny is an unwilling example, as the government puts a tracker on him after he tries digging into Benedict Ryan, with Sentinel Services following him in order to get Caitlin and Lauren.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Lorna, already remorseful over switching sides, breaks down when she hears that Evangeline was assassinated on the order of her leader Reeva.
  • No-Sell: Erg barely reacts to John punching him in the chest and redirects the impact force back at him via his eye beam.
  • Oh, Crap!: Lorna, when she hears from Max that they are going to assassinate Evangeline.
  • Old Friend: Turns out Erg and Evangeline go way back.
  • Power Incontinence: Reed has another one when he hears the tune from Andrea von Strucker's music box.
  • Psychic Nosebleed: Andy wakes up with this after a fight with Lauren in their dreams.
  • Secret-Keeper: Evangeline tells everyone to keep Lorna's current status as spy inside the Inner Circle a secret.
  • Shame If Something Happened: Esme subtly threatens Lorna after the latter's chat with Andy, telling her to stay out of things that don't concern her.
  • We Are Everywhere: The Purifiers apparently have people in the government.
  • You Are Too Late: John, Marcos, Clarice and Erg come too late to stop the Inner Circle's assassination of Evangeline and the rest of the Underground's leadership.
  • You Did Everything You Could: Marcos comforts Lorna after their failure to prevent the assassination that Evangeline, all the way to her final moments, believed Lorna was doing everything she could for them to the point she kept her Double Agent status a secret.

"If they got both of them, Marcos, I don't want to even think about what they could do."
