"You think I'm gonna let you destroy the rest of what we built?"
Written by Rashad Raisani
Directed by Steven DePaul

"I got people dying out there, and they need something to believe in right now, especially after Atlanta. Evangeline, you gotta give me something."
John Proudstar / Thunderbird

The Underground searches for clues to track down the Inner Circle. Reeva prepares for their next operation.

Tropes:

  • The Bus Came Back: Several characters come back this episode.
    • Evangeline Whedon, the mutant rights lawyer who secretly works with the Underground.
    • Ex-Agent Jace Turner, who is still having trouble letting go of the past.
    • Fade and Mark, now called Bulk, though he already had a minor scene in the episode before that, who are shown carrying out hits for the Hellfire Club. Fade also spies on Andy at Reeva's behest.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Lauren is upset that her parents never brought up about the incident in Atlanta, where she and Andy killed 15 people, or how she felt since then.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Reeva tells Andy about a mutant friend she had once, with whom she got into a fight one day. The same day, a bunch of Purifiers assaulted them and Reeva couldn't access her powers due to the stress beforehand. It ended with her friend being stabbed to death.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Esme voices concerns two times during the episode, something her sisters and Reeva chastise her about. At first when the Frost Sisters are ordered to murder everyone who saw them and then when Reeva announces that she is ready to kill Andy if he continues being a liability.
  • Flashback: We are shown scenes from three years back, with John fighting in an underground Fight Club before being approached by Evangeline Whedon.
  • Going Cold Turkey: How Evangeline Whedon helps John with his addiction in a flashback. Due to his Super-Strength, she has to chain him to a bed.
  • Guilt Complex: What happened in Atlanta is still haunting John. At the end of the episode, he is taking his rage out on a steel wagon, while flashbacks of his dead friends are shown.
  • Leave No Witnesses: Reeva orders the Frost sisters to kill everyone they manipulated in the previous episode. Esme has reservations, but they go through with it.
  • Mundane Utility: Lorna uses her powers to move Dawn's cradle, lock her door, turn on the lights, and so forth.
  • Off the Wagon: Since his last appearance, Jace Turner has gone to more mundane work in an effort to get over his obsession with hunting mutants. Lorna blacking out the city causes him to briefly relapse, but a colleague convinces him not to give up the new life he's built.
  • Power Incontinence: Andy has trouble focusing his powers due to his shared dreams with Lauren. A pep talk from Reeva helps straighten him out.
  • Psychic-Assisted Suicide: The Frost sisters force Hein to kill himself. They were going to walk him into the running propeller of a plane, but Esme instead has a truck driver run him down to prove she isn't going soft.
  • Psychic Link: Lauren and Andy keep having the same nightmares.
  • The Unfavorite: Caitlin accuses Reed that Andy is this to him, as he would freak out just like she would if Lauren had gone with the Hellfire Club instead. When Andy tries to call Lauren and his dad ends up answering, Andy angrily throws the phone and smashed it.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Evangeline is not too happy with John, as she blames the Atlanta incident on him, which caused a huge wave of crackdowns on several Mutant Underground bases throughout the country. She still provides him with a contact, however, though she's not willing to risk the safety of the remaining bases beyond that.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Even though she takes no pleasure in it, Reeva is fully willing to execute Andy for being a potential liability, though she backs down when he honestly admits his reservations.

"Don't you dare give into despair. It'll eat you alive."
