Beware the Nice Ones. Especially when they're on the verge of a Freak Out.
Olympia's Day

Airdates: July 6, 2016 note , July 7, 2016 note

When a new room opens up in headquarters, all the agents want a piece of it.

Tropes:

  • '80s Hair: Ms. O doesn't just have the hair while she dances, she has the aerobic wear to match.
  • Ambiguous Time Period: Played with. The time period during which Ms. O had a room to herself to dance in isn't directly stated, but it's heavily implied to be the '80s, going by her '80s Hair and period-appropriate clothes.
  • An Aesop: It's okay to say "no" to others if you disagree with something. Don't be afraid to do so; stand up for yourself.
  • Answer Cut: Ms. O informs Olympia that she had everyone draw straws for ownership of the room. Olympia asks who won. Whip Pan transition to the winner himself: Ogg, who is standing in the room, alone, moaning uncomfortably, still with the straw he pulled in his hand.
  • Blatant Lies: Ms. O checks on Olympia the first time around and sees the eight agents packed in the room divided by eighths, then asks the agent if she still has room for the Noisemaker. Olympia responds that she has a spot in the back for him, causing Ms. O to give her a doubtful look. However, she doesn't question her agent on it.
  • Buffy Speak: Olympia refers to the Interrogation Room as "interrogate-y" at one point.
  • Cheshire Cat Grin: Olympia develops a very unsettling one just before she slips into "mathness". Even Ms. O is disturbed by it (and that's how you know things have gone entirely south). See for yourself.
  • Collective Groan: Olympia invokes this when she begins to leave the room to check on the Noisemaker's living arrangements, only for Ogg to begin moaning, which causes her to come back and explain to Ms. O (standing right outside) that moaning is something everyone in the room does. She then directs everyone else in moaning, much to the Director's confusion (and considering what Olympia's putting them through, some of those moans are likely very legitimate).
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Olympia gives Ogg the last portion of the room, this exchange ensues.
Ogg: What do I do with this?
Olympia: Anything you want! You just have to stay here, and not leave, so everyone has one-fourth, and everyone is equal!
Ogg: I feel like I'm grounded.
Olympia: Ha. Ogg, what's your job here, professional jokester?
  • Continuity Nod: Oona is shown working on improving the Face-Replace-inator gadget, which now has the ability to give a person a pigeon face, a squirrel face, or a half-squirrel-and-half-pigeon face.
    • Two of the oddities shown on Owen's Security computers show the teddy-bear tornado from "Assistant's Creed" and the house of the Cold Open client from "Blob on the Job" taking flight into the air.
    • Also from "Blob on the Job", one of the housing options for the Noisemaker includes a castle located in Blobsylvania.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: At the climax of the episode, Ms. O reveals that she was well aware of Olympia's inability to say no to others (and likely caught on early when listening to Olympia's Blatant Lies). However, had she spent more time with her agent attempting to boost her self-advocacy skills and teaching her that saying no to others is a perfectly reasonable thing to do, the entire conflict likely would have been avoided, as all Olympia would have to do is simply deny Ocean and Dr. O the chance to take up residence in the room.
  • Crashing Dreams: As Olympia is having hallucinations about dividing up the room into smaller and smaller pieces, Ms. O repeatedly calls her name in an attempt to get her to wake up and snap out of it. The agent eventually wakes up in Dr. O's office, asking what happened to her.
  • Dancing Is Serious Business: When Olympia asks Ms. O what the room was used for before, there is a Whip Pan transition to Ms. O in 80s-style attire as she dances about.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Played with. O'Malley tells Olympia that he sent an email out regarding the tubes being closed for cleaning two years ago, which is plenty of advance time...for those working there two years ago, which excludes Olympia, who wasn't working at Odd Squad then.
O'Malley: Hey, I sent an email about this two years ago!
Olympia: We weren't working here two years ago!
    O'Malley: Well that explains it...
  • Drawing Straws: Ms. O had everyone who was previously an occupant of the room (bar Olympia) draw straws to see who would be the new owner of the room. The winner ends up being Ogg.
  • Everything's Better with Sparkles: Blink and you'll miss it, but Ms. O is wearing pink, sparkly eyeshadow as she dances in the room.
  • Evolving Credits: While no clips are swapped out in the opening theme, the Character in the Logo shot replaces Oscar with Oona following his departure, comprising a new Main 4 for Season 2.
  • Faint in Shock: Implied when Olympia wakes up in Dr. O's office in confusion, asking what happened, after having a Freak Out.
  • Fatal Flaw: This episode introduces another character flaw of Olympia's: her inability to say no. Not only is she outright afraid to do so, but she is physically incapable of doing it as well. This flaw, combined with her Genki Girl tendencies and her goal of wanting to spread peace and joy to her co-workers, prevents her from denying said co-workers access to the room she is supposed to share with the Noisemaker, and eventually sends her into Sanity Slippage.
Ms. O: [in response to Olympia granting access of the room to Dr. O and Ocean] You sure about this?
Olympia: Of course. I mean an opportunity to help my fellow employees and spread peace and joy? I don't need all this... [gestures to the room] Space. Boo.
Ms. O: [as Dr. O and Ocean leave to get medical equipment and creatures, respectively] It's your room. Do what you want. Just don't be afraid to say no.
Olympia: Noooooooo problem! See what I did there? [Ms. O's gone with a Stealth Hi/Bye] And she's gone.
  • For Happiness: This is Olympia's basic modus operandi, which is deconstructed in this episode. She is a Genki Girl who enjoys befriending others and wants to make her co-workers happy, and because of this, she eagerly lets them have a piece of the room Ms. O grants her to share with the Noisemaker. However, it becomes abundantly clear that this can very easily become a Fatal Flaw of hers that can, at worst, result in Sanity Slippage and a Freak Out.
  • Freak Out: Ms. O showing Olympia the stack of letters received from people who want a spot of the room causes the agent to completely snap — something that surprises the Director herself (who had a Laughing Mad fit of her own in "The Jackies") as Olympia explains that she can fit as many people in the room as she wants. It is implied that she eventually manages to black out, as she wakes up in Dr. O's office in confusion and is told that she "descended into mathness".
  • Friendship Favoritism: Olympia is accused by Oona of favoring Odd Squad Doctors and "creature people" (read: Ocean) over Scientists.
  • "Getting My Own Room" Plot: This episode has a work-related variant. Ms. O opens up a new room to Olympia at her behest so the agent can discuss the Noisemaker's new life with him once he arrives at Headquarters. However, other employees, such as Ocean, Dr. O and Oona, get wind of the news and want to share the room. Olympia, unable to say no, allows them to share it with her, but conflicts arise as the room is not divided evenly among its inhabitants. (Of course, typical for the mathematical Aesop, most of these conflicts get resolved quickly — never mind the fact that Olympia completely forgoes the idea of having a part of the room reserved for the Noisemaker, as initially intended, incredibly early.) Things soon get out of hand when the room reaches its full capacity of 16 agents and Olympia can no longer keep herself sane as she tries everything in her power to keep everyone in the room happy.
  • Hands Go Down: When Ms. O is checking up on Olympia after Oona and a few Scientists take up residence in the room, she finds doubt in the happiness of them and the other residents. Olympia has this to say in response:
Olympia: Everybody in the room is totally happy and great. [as Ogg is raising his hand; without turning around] Ogg, please put your hand down.
    [Ogg puts his hand down]
  • Heel–Face Turn: While ultimately subverted in the next episode, the Main 4 (sans Oona) are discussing bringing the Noisemaker back to Headquarters to receive a Villain Relocation Package, which is part of Odd Squad's Villain Protection Program, for villains who wish to turn good.
  • Kinda Busy Here: Olympia calls Otis to ask him what the Noisemaker would like for a house once he enters the Villain Protection Program. However, she seems to be extremely privy to the fact that Otis and the Noisemaker are running away from what is eventually revealed to be Lady Bread, Evil Teddy, and Mr. Lightning, who all discover that the Noisemaker has turned good.
  • Loose Lips: Olympia continuously lets slip the fact that she has a room to numerous other employees, which draw them to it as they ask her for a spot in it. The trope ends up double-subverted at one point when Olympia begins to tell Owen about her new room, catches herself before she can say she has one, and then says that she almost told Owen about her new room.
  • Mellow Fellow: Ogg has this personality. He speaks in a low, droning voice, shows very little emotion, and is mostly cynical. This puts him in very stark contrast to Olympia, a Genki Girl who is more positive and outgoing.
  • My Friends... and Zoidberg: The people who want to have a part of Olympia's room include seven Security agents...and Paul.
Olympia: He doesn't even work here!
Owen: Yeah, and he's not gonna want to if you treat him like that!
  • My God, What Have I Done?: When Olympia wakes up in Dr. O's office, she realizes just what she's done, and finally admits that she can't say no. Luckily, Ms. O managed to catch on to the drift early and finds a solution that makes everyone happy.
  • Nightmare Face: Olympia makes some pretty terrifying ones, especially at the climax of the episode when her sanity completely goes out the window.
  • Noodle Implements: The last time the Noisemaker was taken into the Villain Protection Program, he apparently gave Odd Squad info about what shampoo brands other villains use, and not "world-destruction-type stuff".
  • No Sense of Direction: As Otis leaves Ms. O and Olympia to meet up with the Noisemaker, the two girls realize that they don't know their way back to the bullpen, and spend a few moments running back and forth trying to find it. (No one remind Ms. O that she's worked in the precinct for about 33 years now.)
  • No Sympathy: Owen tells Olympia that the Noisemaker (who is entering the Villain Protection Program and making a Heel–Face Turn) has two living options: a broken-down castle in Blobsylvania, or a studio apartment in Dirt Town. When she tells him those are both horrible choices, his response is "I know. He's a villain."
  • Oh, Crap!: Olympia has one when Ms. O comes to check on her the first time around, which doubles as a Wild Take.
  • Please, Don't Leave Me: Initially Played for Laughs when Olympia tells Ogg that all he has to do is stay in the room and not leave, so everyone can have an equal share of the room. However, considering that her sanity is slipping, it doesn't come off as comedic in hindsight, especially when Ogg tells Dr. O (who expresses her dislike that the room is divided in eighths) that she can have his section and begins to leave, only for Olympia to threateningly tell him to stay.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Ogg isn't happy with Olympia forcing part of the room on him and forcing him to stay inside, but when she asks if everyone's okay with the situation and he tells her he isn't, she ignores him due to receiving a call from Otis, and doesn't get a chance to reason with her again.
  • Sanity Slippage: Olympia is shown continuously losing her grip on her sanity as she invites more and more employees into her room. Eventually, it gets to such a point where, after Ms. O informs her that she has a pile of letters from people who want a piece of the room for themselves, she ends up having vivid hallucinations about dividing the room into smaller and smaller bits, and ends up having to be taken to Dr. O's office for treatment. Losing one's sanity happens to be a common occurrence in the Odd Squad universe, known as "slipping into mathness".
  • Shoe Phone: A variant; Oona has gadgets hidden in her shoes, but only because she has no way to carry them around. It's played for laughs per Rule of Funny.
  • Simultaneous Arcs: This episode and "Otis's Day" both chronicle what is happening with both Olympia and Otis in regards to the Noisemaker entering the Villain Protection Program, with the episodes taking place at the same time. This one focuses on Olympia as she prepares a room for the Noisemaker's impending arrival so she can discuss his new life with him, but quickly becomes overwhelmed by her co-workers asking for the room instead, and it ends with Otis returning to Headquarters a muddy exhausted mess as the two tell each other, "You would not believe the day I've had."
  • Speak in Unison: Olympia and Otis do this in the Cold Open before catching themselves, with each insisting the other say the "what seems to be the problem" line.
  • There's No Kill like Overkill: The Cold Open client has the issue of appliances not sounding like they should — the toaster sounds like the toilet, which sounds like the vacuum, which sounds like the smoke alarm, which sounds like the doorbell. While the obvious solution would be to swap out the smoke alarm to end the chain, Otis has a much more extreme solution in mind: move out, as the house is clearly a lost cause. The client is relieved, saying that she thought she was going to have to get a new smoke alarm.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Ms. O gives Olympia a small taste of this when she finds 16 of her agents crammed together in the room, all of them protesting about not having enough space.
  • Witness Protection: Odd Squad has their own take on the Witness Protection Program — it's not for agents or citizens of the town who witness odd crimes; rather, it's for the villains who commit said crimes, who wish to perform Heel-Face Turns and go to the side of good. In exchange for being given a new home and an overall new life, the villain must give Odd Squad information on what they know about the other villains, so that the organization can know their plans and stop oddness before it happens. Naturally, due to the status quo, the Noisemaker — who is entering the program — refuses to comply, and instead makes his escape.
  • Worldbuilding: This episode introduces an emergency rope ladder that is another way to get into Headquarters (an Elaborate Underground Base) aside from using the tubes.

A villain and a hero casually having lunch. What is this madness?!
Otis's Day

Airdates: July 6, 2016 note , July 7, 2016 note

Getting a villain back to Headquarters proves cumbersome when the tubes are down for maintenance.

Tropes:

  • Befriending the Enemy: Played with. Over the course of the episode, the Noisemaker befriends Otis, and the reason why he doesn't want to go into the Villain Protection Program is because he's afraid of losing him. However, the feeling isn't mutual, as Otis views the Noisemaker as he's always viewed him: as an enemy.
  • Behind a Stick: The Noisemaker hides behind a picnic bench when Otis first meets up with him.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Olympia and Ms. O give one in unison when the Noisemaker refuses to go into the Villain Protection Program due to the fact that he'll lose a friend.
  • Blatant Lies: When the Noisemaker asks Otis if he knows what he's doing concerning the Tube Travel issue, Otis assures him that he knows what he's doing just before he calls up his partner.
    • When Otis and the Noisemaker run into Lady Bread, they attempt to convince her that Odd Squad caught the villain making noise at the library during quiet time while dumping food on his head. Lady Bread doesn't appear to buy it, but discovers the truth when listening to Otis tell the Noisemaker that she doesn't know he's working with Odd Squad.
    • The Noisemaker later invokes this at the end of the episode, telling Otis that he'll pass off his working with Odd Squad as a story.
  • Blind Alley: The Noisemaker and Otis duck behind a bike vendor's stand just as Lady Bread, Mr. Lightning and Evil Teddy run past them.
  • Body Wipe: As Otis and the Noisemaker run away from the three villains after accidentally letting the secret of the Noisemaker working with Odd Squad slip, Lady Bread and Evil Teddy chase after them, while Mr. Lightning walks into the camera, rubbing his hands in preparation for an attack, just before there is an Idiosyncratic Wipe of the Security logo as the scene cuts to Olympia and Owen.
  • The Bus Came Back: Evil Teddy returns after having last been seen in "Assistant's Creed".
  • Buses Are for Freaks: Since the tubes are closed for cleaning, Otis and the Noisemaker are forced to use the bus to get to the emergency rope ladder on the other side of town. Unfortunately for them, Mr. Lightning, another villain, boards the same bus, and they are forced to hide by practically laying down on the seats until they can get off.
  • Character Development: While Otis initially started out as having No Social Skills, this episode has him bond with the Noisemaker, who befriends him. Ms. O points out this development at the end of the episode.
Ms. O: At least your people skills are getting better.
  • Chase Scene: Otis and the Noisemaker quickly run away from Evil Teddy, Mr. Lightning and Lady Bread, who are attacking them.
  • Covered in Mud: Both Otis and the Noisemaker fall into a lake, and are next seen covered head to toe in mud.
  • Fingerless Hands: Lady Bread has two loaves of bread for hands, but no visible fingers.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Subverted. While it looks like the Noisemaker will truly turn good, he ends up going back to villainy at the end of the episode.
  • Heroism Won't Pay the Bills: Even if Otis is an agent of Odd Squad, he is still forced to pay the bus fare like everyone else.
    • The trope is inverted for Mr. Lightning, who is also forced to pay bus fare despite being a worshipped villain by the bus driver. However, instead of paying with cash, he pays by refilling the bus's battery meter with his lightning powers.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Played with; the bus driver views Odd Squad as the greatest mystery-solving team ever, but he also views Mr. Lightning as the greatest villain ever.
  • Hyperventilation Bag: The Noisemaker begins to hyperventilate when Otis informs him that Olympia is checking on the Tube Travel issue. This being the Noisemaker, though, he hyperventilates into his harmonica instead of a bag.
  • I Can't Hear You: As the Noisemaker is biking with Otis, this exchange ensues.
    Otis: Lake!
Noisemaker: I know! My singing is great!
Otis: No, you're headed for a lake!
    [the Noisemaker yells; splashing]
  • "I Know What We Can Do" Cut: Otis tells the Noisemaker that they'll have to walk across town to get to the emergency rope ladder needed to enter Headquarters. The Noisemaker begins to protest, saying that he'll stay a villain, but Otis assures him that there's a "fun and fast" way of getting there. Transition to both of them about to board a bus.
Noisemaker: How is this better than tubes?
Otis: Because, uhh, you can sit down instead of all scrunched up. [kneels down and groans] So uncomfortable.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Evil Teddy throws a teddy bear from afar that manages to whack Otis's phone out of his hand.
  • My Nayme Is: While on the phone, Evil Teddy insists that her name is spelled just like that, as opposed to "Evil Teddie".
  • No, Mr. Bond, I Expect You to Dine: Parodied. While hiding from Evil Teddy, the Noisemaker and Otis take refuge in a restaurant. However, since hiding is for paying customers only, both the agent and the villain are forced to eat a meal together. For the Noisemaker, it's enjoyable.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Mr. Lightning's full name is Mr. Thunder and Lightning, but he shortened it to Mr. Lightning, which is the name that everyone refers to him as.
  • Quaking with Fear: The Noisemaker begins shaking in fear when Mr. Lightning boards the bus. Unfortunately, the tambourines he's wearing shake with him and produce a rattling sound that the other villain picks up on.
  • Shock and Awe: True to his name, Mr. Lightning has the ability to shoot lightning out of his hands as well as create thunder by rubbing his hands together to store up power.
  • Shout-Out: The song that the Noisemaker sings as he and Otis are biking to the emergency rope ladder is part of the song "On A Bicycle Built For Two", by Nat King Cole.
  • Simultaneous Arcs: While "Olympia's Day" shows what is happening on Olympia's end when preparing for the Noisemaker's admittance into the Villain Protection Program, this episode shows what happens with Otis as he meets up with him and takes him back to Headquarters.
  • Slapstick: Otis repeatedly gets smacked by pine trees as he and the Noisemaker ride on a two-seated bicycle. Since the Noisemaker is taller than him, any branches that brush past his shoulder are bound to hit Otis right in the face.
  • Status Quo Is God: The Noisemaker refuses to tell Odd Squad about the other villains and their plans, meaning that it's back to the same old routine for the organization when it comes to catching them.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Lady Bread, Evil Teddy and Mr. Lightning all pull one on Otis and the Noisemaker shortly after they exit the restaurant.
  • Sting: The Noisemaker performs one with the keyboard he wears.
  • Tube Travel: Averted; since O'Malley is busy cleaning the tubes, they are down for maintenance, so when Otis and the Noisemaker attempt to go into a tube entrance, they phase right through it.
  • Villainous Friendship: Played with. Evil Teddy states that she's friends with other villains, but notes that none of them are nice enough to pay for her cake.
  • Villains Out Shopping: Lady Bread, Evil Teddy and Mr. Lightning are all out running various errands, with Mr. Lightning taking the bus, Evil Teddy planning to pick up a cake (for her own birthday, no less), and Lady Bread eating at a local restaurant.
  • We Are Not Going Through That Again: Ms. O gives Otis and Olympia the chance to rest up in Headquarters for a bit. Otis notices the mansion that Owen had picked out for the Noisemaker as an option, suggesting that they share it with other agents. Olympia, having gone through that exact scenario (which culminated in Sanity Slippage and a Freak Out), is quick to give him a stern "Nooooooooo!" in response.
  • Weird Currency: A Running Gag in the episode is the Noisemaker attempting to pay for things with various instruments, only for them to not be accepted as currency. However, he and Otis eventually go to a local bike vendor in order to get a bike that will take them to the emergency rope ladder, who does accept instruments as currency.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Otis gives a healthy dose of this to the Noisemaker when he refuses to tell Odd Squad what he knows.
  • You Are Too Late: Owen comes up to the Main 4 (sans Oona) at the end of the episode and informs them that he's found a mansion for the Noisemaker to live in. Olympia is quick to quietly inform him that he's a bit late to the punch.
