Being Cute and Psycho must run in the Odd Squad Director line.
The Jackies

Airdates: December 26, 2014 note , February 2, 2015 note , March 29. 2015 note

Ms. O and her team will stop at nothing to win their very first Jackie Award, because Mr. O has won all the previous ones.

Tropes:

  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Apparently, Blue Leg Night doesn't exist. In a world which is filled with all sorts of various oddities.
  • Buffy Speak: Otto refers to the greater-than symbol as an "arrow thingy".
  • Cassandra Truth: Octavia brings various fruits into Ms. O's office throughout the episode and attempts to explain that they are afflicted with oddness. Ms. O repeatedly dismisses her and believes that she's bringing in random fruits for no good reason. However, Octavia turns out to be right on the money, and fixing the five fruits' oddness is what ends up helping Ms. O and her agents secure the Jackie Award for the year.
  • Competition Freak: Ms. O becomes one in this episode, as she sends all of her Investigation agents onto the field in order to seek out and eliminate oddness. It's justified by the fact that her precinct hasn't won a Jackie Award in millennia.
  • Continuity Nod: This episode continues the Running Gag of Otto asking how old Ms. O is, only for her to Hand Wave it, which was introduced in "Totally Odd Squad".
    • Olive and Otto mistakenly believe that two twin sisters have a case of the doubles.
  • Distinction Without a Difference: After Ms. O ceases her Laughing Mad fit, this exchange ensues:
Ms. O: [abruptly stops laughing] Oscar!! How's my dress looking?!
    Oscar: Uhh, sparkly!
Ms. O: I want it very sparkly!
    Oscar: What's the difference?
Ms. O: [ominously] You'll know it when you see it.
    • Later on, Ms. O and Oscar have another exchange regarding the same dress.
Oscar: How's this for sparkly, heh heh?
Ms. O: Hmm...now that I see it, I think we need twinkly. Not sparkly.
Oscar: What does that even mean?
  • Dressed in Layers: Ms. O's awards outfit is comprised of 302 layers of dresses, all of which Oscar sewed by hand.
  • Evil Gloating: Orville does this at one point when he calls Oprah.
Orville: [chuckling] Oprah, Oprah. Did you really think I would let you win so easily?
    Ms. O: [growls]
Orville: I guess I'll be handing that Jackie Award to myself again. [chuckling] I haven't felt this good since the first time I was victorious in year one. [goes Laughing Mad]
  • Failure Hero: No matter how many cases Precinct 13579's agents have solved, they've never been able to beat the neighboring precinct — and it goes as far back as the caveman times. It's implied that Ms. O and Orville have been dueling for millennia.
  • Fictional Counterpart: The Jackies are essentially Odd Squad's stand-in for the Emmy Awards, although the Jackies' statue looks closer to an Oscar. invoked Coincidentally, the show would manage to win two Daytime Emmys the following year.
  • Gravity Is a Harsh Mistress: Oren and Olaf encounter a man who is floating in mid-air, in a falling position. Once Olaf fires a gadget at him, he plummets to the ground.
Oren: Olaf, you were supposed to put a mattress down!
  • Grumpy Old Man: Played for Laughs with Ms. O and Oscar upon Octavia coming in with another fruit.
  • Hidden Depths: Following Olive and Ms. O, Oscar is revealed to have good tailoring skills, and manages to make over 300 dresses in time for The Jackie Awards.
  • Innocuously Important Episode: Orville, an Odd Squad Director in a neighboring precinct, makes his debut in this episode as Ms. O's arch-rival. The season finale would go on to reveal that both Directors have buried the hatchet and have been on good terms since the awards; Orville allows Olive and Otto to become his successors after he decides to retire.
  • Ironic Echo Cut:
    (phone rings)
Ms. O: (smug) That must be Mr. O calling me to tell me how worried he is. (picks up phone)
Mr. O: I bet you think I'm calling to tell you how worried I am.
  • I've Heard of That — What Is It?: Ms. O explains that tonight is the night of the Jackie Awards, leading Otto to respond with "Riiiiight...what are those again?"
  • Lady in Red: One of Ms. O's dresses is an elegant, sequined red dress.
  • Laughing Mad: Both Ms. O and Mr. O engage in fits of psychotic laughter. In the case of the former, Olive and Otto's response is to back out of the room, then quickly make a break for it. She has a brief conversation with Oscar before she goes right back to laughing.
  • Ms. Exposition: Invoked by Ms. O, who hands off exposition duties regarding the greater-than and less-than symbols to Olive.
  • Pacing a Trench: Played with. Ms. O doesn't create a groove in the floor (although, considering how much strength she has, she could), but she is shown pacing consistently when Olive and Otto enter her office.
  • Preemptive "Shut Up": Defied by Otto, who attempts to ask where Precinct 13579's Jackie Award is kept, only for Olive to shut him up every time. He eventually lets the question spill, causing Ms. O to let out a growl and for Olive to reluctantly tell him that they've never won one.
  • Reluctant Gift: Orville and Ms. O engage in a brief tug-of-war with the Jackie Award at the ceremony.
  • Reverse Arm-Fold: Hayley walks in this manner before revealing her lobster claws.
  • Tempting Fate: Mr. O tells Ms. O to look at her monitor, which displays a score of 101-100. Ms. O then remarks that "it's only up by one", only for the count on Mr. O's end to jump up to 150 a few seconds later.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After millennia upon millennia of fighting for a Jackie Award, Ms. O's precinct finally manages to snag one.

Guess who's who?
Invasion of the Body Switchers

Airdates: December 26, 2014 note , February 2, 2015 note , March 29. 2015 note

When Ms. O and Oscar accidentally switch bodies, Olive and Otto must set things right before Ms. O's O Test.

Tropes:

  • Absurd Phobia: Oren is afraid of pancakes, while Olaf is afraid of not becoming a dentist in the future.
  • A Glass in the Hand: Played with, as Oscar intentionally breaks pencils as a stalling technique.
  • All There in the Script: Professor O's department isn't mentioned in the episode, but the handbook lists it as "Continuing Kid Education".
  • Bad Liar: Oscar is not good at lying, to the point where Professor O begins to leave after only a few minutes of being there; however, Oscar reins him back in.
  • The Cameo: O'Brian makes a cameo appearance as one of the agents presented when Olive and Otto search for a control panel to retrieve a diamond piece.
  • Chair Reveal: Ms. O, in Oscar's body, is introduced this way.
  • Classified Information: Olive and Otto tell Oren and Olaf they need their Dig-inator for a top-secret mission that involves their greatest fears.
  • Continuity Nod: Otto kneels down to Orchid's level and treats her like she's younger, just like in "The Trouble With Centigurps". And like that episode, it fails to make any impact on her.
    • The Pudding-inator is brought up again after being introduced in "Agent Obfusco".
  • Determinator: Inverted for Otto once again; he gives up upon seeing that none of the gadgets listed by Ms. O have a rectangle piece.
Otto: [sighs] So much for positive thinking.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: Zig-zagged. While it's explicitly mentioned that Oscar and Ms. O have swapped bodies, only their personalities, mannerisms, and skills have changed -- their voices don't switch, and a keen-eyed viewer can easily tell who is who. The body swap between Professor O and the Friggle Frog plays this trope more straight.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: Yet another 43 can be seen after Olive and Otto retrieve the Pudding-inator from Orchid.
  • Humiliation Conga: A non-villainous example. It's stated that if Ms. O fails the O Test, she will be fired and Oscar will "ruin her life" somehow. Whether that means Oscar is The Starscream or he's taking advantage of her strength is up for interpretation.
  • Hypocrite: Olive has a doubtful look on her face when Oren reveals his greatest fear to be of pancakes, yet she's afraid of pie. Justified by the fact that she got her fear of pie from a traumatic event, and we don't hear why Oren fears pancakes.
  • The Inspector Is Coming: The body-switching incident happens to be on the same day that Professor O is coming to administer the O Test to Ms. O. As a result, Oscar, in Ms. O's body, is forced to stall, while Ms. O in Oscar's body helps Olive and Otto retrieve the parts needed for the Switch-inator gadget to reverse the effects.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Oscar and Ms. O's explanation of how the body-switching happened.
Oscar: Funny story...as you know, I take gadget safety very seriously-
Ms. O: We were playing "Toss-the-Switchinator Gadget", when Butterfingers over here dropped it!
Oscar: Bad throw if you ask me.
  • Magic Countdown: Fed up with "Ms. O's" stalling, Professor O gives "her" ten seconds to respond, or else it counts as an automatic failure of the O Test. Olive, Otto, and "Oscar" end up fixing the gadget and undoing the effects Just in Time.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": Between Oscar, Otto and Olive (and to a lesser extent, Ms. O) upon realizing that they body-switched Professor O and the Friggle Frog in addition to changing Ms. O and Oscar back to their normal selves.
  • Mistaken Identity: Otto explains that Oscar has to pretend like he's Ms. O, since he's stuck in her body. Upon attempting to do so, he fails horribly. Professor O, however, buys that Ms. O is actually Ms. O, and not a body-switched Oscar — even though Oscar's anxiety still manages to manifest in numerous different ways as he attempts to stall the Professor.
    • It's Played for Laughs when this exchange happens between a body-swapped Ms. O and Otto:
Ms. O: I see a triangle here and here. You two split up, and meet outside of my office.
[Olive and Otto start to leave, then stop in their tracks and turn around]
Otto: Question: your office, or Ms. O's office?
Ms. O: [between gritted teeth] I mean my office, because I'm Ms. O!
  • Non-Answer: Oscar has answered all of Professor O's questions with "that is a great question!" By the third go-around, Professor O has had enough.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a reference to the Invasion of the Body Snatchers series of films.
  • Running Gag: Ms. O, who is trapped in Oscar's body with little strength, searches for a way to get juice and remarks that she doesn't like Oscar's various body parts (hair, teeth, etc.) in the process. She eventually ends up having to stab a straw in an orange and drink it that way.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: Olive makes a "ding" noise nearly every time a piece of the control panel is placed.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Professor O wears a monocle and bowler hat as part of his attire.
  • Sudden Soundtrack Stop: The soothing background music that plays over Otto explaining to Orchid that people need to help each other in times of need comes to a halt when he's interrupted by Orchid willing to give the gadget to Olive if it'll shut him up.
  • Taking the Heat: Ms. O, in her original body, takes full responsibility for what she's done, since she was in Oscar's body at the time of the incident. By extension, she also shifts the blame to herself from Olive and Otto.
  • Tempting Fate: Olive explains the good news: Professor O hasn't arrived at the precinct yet, so they can repair the Switch-inator and solve the issue beforehand. However, she doesn't get a chance to finish before the phone rings — it's Professor O, marking his arrival.
  • Terrible Artist: Justified. Otto's "Olive and Otto Save the Day" poster is crudely drawn, but Otto is only a child.
  • Vacation Episode: Downplayed. Oren and Olaf are relaxing in the Ballroom, with inflatable chairs, coconut drinks, and magazines, while wearing sunglasses.
  • Verbal Backspace: When Olive, Otto, and a body-swapped Ms. O leave the office, body-swapped Oscar tells them to hurry, before amending his words with "hurray, yay for tests!"
  • We Need a Distraction: Oscar is forced to stall Professor O for time while Olive, Otto and Ms. O search for replacement parts for the Switch-inator gadget. He does a terrible job, but somehow is able to pull it off successfully.
