Art by Crash X Fusion: In order to heal we must first forgive...and sometimes, the person we must forgive is ourselves.

Two sets of friends have much needed talks with each other: everyone wonders why Amity is suddenly acting aloof.

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Vee is only heard, not seen, but she debuts before "Keeping Up A-fear-ances".
  • An Aesop: Everyone makes mistakes and while you can never forget them, you can learn from them.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: The Inner Demon dupes both Skara and the Inner Amity into burning Amity's memories, damaging her mind further and making it easier for him to destroy it.
  • Bittersweet Ending: King talks to Eda about what happened with Luz drinking the elixer and gets some closure while Luz and Willow renew their friendship after giving each other space since their argument. However, Inner Amity destroys her memories, putting her in greater danger.
  • Broken Tears: 10-year-old Luz breaks down into these from her guilt of scratching Willow.
  • Call-Back: The last memory Skara extracts from Amity is of the latter's first kiss with Luz in "Good from the Bad".
  • The Cameo:
    • Dr. Bride appears in a flashback having finished pumping Luz's stomach.
    • Luz and Amity's canon selves appear at the end of the chapter to deliver a message about the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
  • Can't Believe I Said That: Upon meeting Luz and King, Raine greets them by saying "salutations", which they chastise themself on. And before leaving the Owl House, they say "Whisper you later."
Luz: Is that a thing you say?
Raine: (embarrassed) No... it sounded cooler in my head...
  • Cliffhanger: The chapter ends with everyone looking over an unconsious Amity as the Inner Demon gives off an Evil Laugh.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Deal with the Devil: Emperor Belos offers the recaptured Greater Basilisk the freedom of her kind in exchange for hunting down Puck.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Inner Amity sets fire to Amity's memory photo of her first kiss, only to realize too late that they're highly flammable so the rest follow soon after.
  • Downer Ending: Inner Amity's attempt to burn the memory of her and Luz causes the destruction of the rest of her memories, and she falls unconscious to the delight of the Inner Demon.
  • Easily Forgiven: Willow forgave Luz for hurting her and covered up the incident by saying a stray bullcat attacked her and her tormentors.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: While not inherently evil, Inner Amity doesn't break up with Luz because Amity's feelings for her are too strong for her to even attempt it.
  • Everyone Knew Already: Raine had always suspected Eda messed with Nicole when they were in school.
  • Forgiveness: After 19 chapters, Luz and Willow finally make up after their argument in "The Conjuring Conflict", reaffirming their friendship.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Eda promises herself to tell King something about his past one day.
    • Were-Fever is brought up during a history class, and the outbreak leads to some massive revelations in Book 2.
  • I Never Said It Was Poison: Before Hunter leaves the carnival, he wishes Luz good luck with her mint-haired girlfriend. Luz says she never told him about that, and he just says she was too obvious.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Skara properly meets Hunter after seeing him at the Harwitch party.
    • Calypso learns about Amity having a knife from her daughter, who doesn't give away Amity's identity.
    • Hunter learns Luz and Amity are dating and later reports Puck's existence and his connection to the girls to Belos.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Eda still had to tell Luz and King why she took her elixirs (far earlier than in canon though) and someone gets her memories burned, putting her in grave danger.
  • Ironic Episode Title: The title includes the phrase "I'm fine" when someone isn't, and is even lampshaded.
  • Like a Son to Me: Played both ways. King tells Eda she's the closest thing he has to a mother and she sees him as the son she never had.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Gus wasn't aware of Luz accidentally hurting Willow while having an episode, due to recovering from a visit to the dentist at the time.
  • Multi-Part Episode: Serves as Part 2 of the three-part arc covering "Really Small Problems" and "Understanding Willow".
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Luz remembers a day when she was 10 where she cut Willow while protecting her from bullies as a result of an episode, which makes her wonder why they stayed friends.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: After spending so much time apart from Willow and reflecting on her past actions, Luz is finally ready to renew their friendship and be a better friend to her.
  • Mythology Gag: While talking with Raine, Eda brings up the abomination uprising from her permanent record in "Something Ventured, Something Framed".
  • Noodle Incident:
    • Eda once let Hexside's mascot loose when she was a student.
    • The reason Viney didn't attend the carnival is because Puddles ate something not meant to be eaten and she had to tend to him.
  • Obviously Not Fine: Early on, King says he's okay when he clearly isn't. Later when everyone talks about Amity's recent behavior and Gus says everything's going to be fine, Jerbo almost perfectly namedrops this.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: Everyone picks up on how stoic Amity acts since the carnival and how dismissive she is to them. It hints at how it isn't really her they're talking to.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Instead of Willow, it's Amity whose memories get burned, thanks to the influence of the Inner Demon and the unwilling help of Skara.
    • Unlike canon, Raine gets to meet and interact with Luz and King long before they meet in "O Titan, Where Art Thou", giving the former romantic advice.
    • Luz has also already met and befriended Vee; it took her until mid-Season 2 to even learn of her existence.
  • Public Service Announcement: Canon!Luz and Amity show up in a post-credits scene to do one for the National Suicide Prevention Hotline.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Prof. Snope sees Amity's acting out of character and asks if anything's wrong, assuring her she can talk to him. He also mentions she shouldn't strive to be like her father but instead be her own person.
  • The Reveal:
    • An entity known as the Inner Demon has been feeding off Amity's misery and influencing her inner self into following his orders.
    • There was an outbreak of were-fever during the Savage Ages, its cause unknown and leading to the rise of werewolves and werecats.
    • Luz has already met and befriended Vee, who's somehow ended up in Gravity Falls.
    • Professor Snope worked together with Alador at some point in the past.
  • Self-Harm: After learning one of Skara's friends has been keeping a knife on her, Calypso suggests she's using it to cut herself.
  • Series Continuity Error: In the brief flashback in "Back to Hexside", Luz was eleven when she hurt Willow. But in this chapter's flashbacks, Luz was ten during that point in time.
  • Sequel Hook: The Greater Basilisk going after Puck to end his life.
  • Tempting Fate: Jerbo says that saying things are fine means they're about to get much worse; right after he finishes his sentence, Skara bursts into the cafeteria with Amity out cold.
  • Very Special Chapter: The extra scene after the answered reviews makes the chapter this.
  • Wham Episode: Luz and Willow become friends again while Amity falls victim to the Inner Demon after her memories are burnt.
  • Wham Line: "Some have called me an emotional vampire, but here in the mindscape I consider myself a god over everyone in the Boiling Isles. Including the children. Especially the children. But you may call me... the Inner Demon."
