Tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: Eda's "Junk... junk..." gag mirrors to that of whenever Burdine Maxwell, who is also played by Wendie Malick, gets her mail.
  • Answer Cut: When Eda shouts "Where are you?!" for Owlbert after she realizes that he's disappeared from her staff, it cuts to Owlbert playing "Whack-a-Giraffe".
  • Anyone Remember Pogs?: One of Eda's treasures is a fidget spinner, which she calls "an outdated human reference".
  • Art Shift: When walking through a Boiling Isles house of mirrors, Luz's reflection in various mirrors appears as a dog person, a skeleton, a Pumpkin Person, a squid creature, an anime design, and a Celestial Body.
  • Bag of Holding: King somehow manages to fit an entire spray bottle into his little fanny pack.
  • Bill... Bill... Junk... Bill...: Eda going through her mail:
    Eda: Junk... junk... death hex...
[Eda tosses the curse into a trash bin, causing the bin to be engulfed by a purple cloud and vanish]
  • Blatant Lies: Played for Laughs. When Luz leaves for school, King scratches at the door, asking Eda if she'll come back. When Eda remarks that it's cute that he misses her, he shouts that "the King of Demons misses nobody!'' When Luz comes back in...
King: You're back! [crawls onto Luz's head] I didn't miss you at all.
  • Bowel-Breaking Bricks: After Tibbles makes the three-eyed winged creature reappear after poofing it away with his magical spray, it promptly lays an egg (which then hatches).
  • Brick Joke: The barrage of bread puns Luz and King make at the start of the episode is a literal example, as at the very end of the episode, Luz makes one last bread pun to King's delight.
King: Yes! Bread puns! Bread puns forever!
  • Continuity Nod: Tibbles from "Hooty's Moving Hassle" returns and wants revenge against Luz, Gus, and Willow for breaking his shop, which everyone keeps referencing and rightfully presume his motivations.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Tibbles reveals himself as "Obvioso" by putting on his disguise in front of Luz, Willow, Gus, and King, the latter states that Obvioso will be mad at him for stealing his mustache, before realizing what truly happened. Cue Face Palm from Gus.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: "You weren't supposed to shrink! You were supposed to disappear!"
  • Easily Forgiven: At the end of the episode, Luz, Willow and Gus don't hold anything against King for accidentally shrinking them.
  • Exit, Pursued by a Bear: Eda dumps a tray of caramel crab apples onto Tibbles, forcing him to flee from the hungry unicorns.
  • Face Palm: Gus does this when King finally sees through Tibbles' Paper-Thin Disguise.
  • Failed a Spot Check:
    • Tibbles sent the flyer to Eda, complete with his picture on the back, which Eda fails to notice until he turns it around to demonstrate.
    • At first, Eda doesn't even notice Luz and others right behind her while selling caramel crab apples during the live show.
  • Funny Background Event: When King is trying to play one of the games, in a partially muffled conversation, Willow reveals to Luz that Boscha was responsible for the mini-pixie infestation that got Hexside shut down for the day.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: King's jealousy of Luz hanging out with Willow and Gus is the main cause of the episode's plot.
  • Hurricane of Puns: The "Luz and King Comedy Hour" consists of King sticking his face through a slice of bread, and he and Luz proceeding to make an avalanche of bread puns. If Eda is to be believed, they would have kept up the puns for the entire hour.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: King insists he doesn't miss Luz when she leaves for school, only to climb all over her in excitement when she returns moments later before saying he didn’t miss her at all.
  • Incredible Shrinking Man: Tibbles uses a potion to shrink things and put them on display for his act, and intends to do this to Eda and the others as revenge for destroying his stand. King accidentally shrinks Willow and Gus with it.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: When Willow and Gus try to hide from the winged creature in a paper cup, Gus proclaims that they're safe now. Cue the monster's tongue piercing right through the cup three times.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: When Luz runs into Willow and Gus at the carnival.
Luz: Oh my gosh, I didn't think I'd see carniv-y'all here!
    (beat)
    Gus: Boo!
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: When shrunken Willow and Gus are hiding under a paper cup as a bird-like creature slowly pecks it to ribbons to try and eat them, Willow cuts loose with her thorny vines to bind it. Complete with Glowing Eyes of Doom and a Pre Ass Kicking One Liner.
    Willow: Enough of this...!
  • Literal Metaphor: Eda literally encounters the Fun Police trying to shut down her stand.
  • Mama Bear: After some customers complain that those "dumb kids" haven't got hurt yet:
Eda: Dumb kids!? (watching Luz, Willow and Gus on the screen) Wait... (realizing what’s going on) THOSE ARE MY DUMB KIDS!
  • My Friends... and Zoidberg: Gus laments that if he were to die, it would at least be with his friends — "...and King". Justified since, at that point, he's still mad at King for getting them all shrunken in the first place.
  • Noodle Incident: Boscha was apparently responsible somehow for a mini-pixie infestation at Hexside so bad that the school was shut down.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: The carnival owner forces Eda to sell concessions if she doesn't want to be sent to the Emperor's Coven.
  • Oh, Crap!: Tibbles' reaction when he realises he just reversed the shrinking potion.
  • Only the Chosen May Wield: Since Tibbles made the shrinking formula, he is the only one who can reverse its effects.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Tibbles puts on a different hat and a fake mustache as "Obvioso the All-Seeing", while doing nothing much else to mask his distinctive appearance, and yet still manages to somehow fool King.
  • Produce Pelting: An angry audience member throws a caramel crab apple right into the mouth of one of the unicorns; the unicorn actually enjoys the taste of the candy so much it sends the other animals right after the audience instead.
  • Running Gag: Luz and King spend most of the episode making bread puns.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: Tibbles' glasses start shining when he gets ready to feed Luz and her friends to his tiny animals.
  • Schmuck Bait: Both Gus and Willow could easily tell that Tibbles was trying to set a trap, but came anyway because they wanted to ride the rides. Eda also figures out he has some kind of scam planned, but ignores him in order to run her own scam.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: The gang immediately close the door right back up when arriving home to find Hooty talking to a fly.
  • Shout-Out: While Eda is in clown jail, one of the criminals on the wanted posters is a goat named Black Phil, which was previously shown in "Once Upon a Swap". Another poster clearly shows Billy Bob Brockali.
  • Sudden Anatomy: King suddenly gains previously-absent eyebrows when trying to avoid telling Luz what happened to Willow and Gus.
  • Take a Third Option: When King and Gus are arguing about whether they want to go onto rides or play games next, Luz's stomach growls, prompting her to exclaim "food!".
  • Tempting Fate: When Luz sees a unicorn, she squeals "At least he's still my friend!". Cue said unicorn snarling and baring its teeth.
  • You Monster!: An infuriated Gus calls King this when confronting him about shrinking him and Willow.
