Luz sees a doctor to get answers on her transformation: a party at Cat's house puts Amity in a dangerous situation.

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Latissa, the town didn't debut until "Hunting Palismen", is introduced a season early.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Unlike in the show where they started out as enemies, Luz and Hunter are stated to have been friends for 4 years.
  • An Aesop: You never know who might show up when you throw a party and let your friends invite other people.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Iggy has muscular prosthetic arms replacing her old ones.
  • Animal Theme Naming: Cat's brothers are named Dog and Moose, showing the Harwitch siblings' names were inspired by animals.
  • Bland-Name Product: Cheet-Ahs, which are based off of Cheetos.
  • Breather Episode: Cat attempts to invoke this by inviting Amity, Skara and Amelia to her brother's party to unwind (and so she can try to forget about the shadow realm.)
  • Bridal Carry: Following the muggers' attack at the party, Luz ends up carrying Amity home to Blight Manor this way as she's too shaken up to move on her own.
  • The Bus Came Back: Bangles and Zepher, the muggers who jumped Amity return, sneaking into the party and attempting to do it again with their third, Brian.
  • Call-Back: Luz mentions her fallout and break with Willow to Hunter.
  • The Cameo:
    • Nicole is seen in Lilith's flashback telling Lilith that Eda got sent to the principal's office again.
    • Morton and Tiny Nose show up when they're hanging out with King.
  • Change the Uncomfortable Subject: When Dr. Bride asks Luz if Amity likes her back, Luz deflects by asking how long her test results will take.
  • Cool Board: Hunter got a skateboard from Eda's stand some time ago to get around and both he and Luz show some skill in riding it.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • The Witch Scouts are mentioned again.
    • Merlin Meadows, a school that Luz said had gangs she fought in "Incidents and Family Secrets", is the school Dog goes to.
  • Crush Blush:
    • Luz has four instances: when Viney blurts out her crush to Dr. Bride, when she gets a text from Amity, and two shared instances with Amity when carrying her and when they learn the twins were spying on them making plans for a date.
    • Skara does it when she thinks about Willow.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Luz takes down both muggers and their third near single handedly (with Skara and Hunter briefly helping her so she can finish them off.)
  • Date Peepers: Actually more like "'Asking someone out on a date' peepers". Edric and Emira eavesdrop on Luz offering to take Amity to the human realm for a day.
  • Dynamic Entry: Luz comes to Amity's rescue by blowing up the door to the room she's being held in, which pins Brian for a moment.
  • Everyone Can See It: The second he sees Luz blushing after she gets a message from Amity, Hunter automatically figures out how she really feels about the youngest Blight.
  • Fist of Rage: Skara tightens both of hers when she hears Bangles say she's going to cut up Amity after she deals with Luz. This is what leads to Skara helping Luz.
  • Flashback B-Plot: The chapter alternates between the present and how Luz first met Hunter 4 years ago.
  • Flashback Cut: Along with the flashbacks detailing Luz and Hunter's first encounter, there's also one to Lilith's time at Hexside.
  • Flipping the Bird: Luz and Hunter exchange these after the former insults the latter and he responds by throwing a snack food into her hair.
  • The Friends Who Never Hang:
    • Luz's very friendship with Hunter is this, as he rarely spends time with her.
    • It turns out King spends time with Morton and Tiny Nose when he wants to have his own adventures.
  • The Ghost: Willow and Gus are mentioned throughout the chapter, with Hunter in lieu of either of them.
  • Given Name Reveal:
    • Right off the bat, Dr. Bride introduces herself to Viney by giving her full name, Elizabeth Wollstonecraft Bride.
    • The names of Amity's muggers are stated to be Bangles (the mummy witch) and Zepher (the witch in the hoodie.)
    • Odalia's pre-marital name is "Grunhar".
  • Groin Attack: Luz whacks Zepher and Brian where the sun don't shine using Brucy.
  • Internal Reveal: Luz learns about her Eye Color Change and Viney tells her what she looked like in her alternate form.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Twice, the Animal Theme Naming that surrounds the Harwitch siblings is noted and ignored.
Luz: Wait, your older brother's named Dog and your little brother's called Moose?
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Luz has no idea that Hunter is the Golden Guard or Belos's nephew, as he's lied to her about who he is for all the time she's known him.
  • Mad Doctor: Dr. Bride pretty much is this based on both her personality and the state of her lab filled with machinery and various body parts in bins.
  • Major Injury Underreaction: Luz shows calm surprise when Amelia points out the knife in her back, which shocks Cat.
  • Meaningful Name: Odalia's birth name, Grunhar, is German for "Green Hair".
  • Meanwhile Scene: After talking to Luz, Eda realizes how peaceful the house is and wonders where King is. Turns out he's out doing his own thing.
  • A Minor Kidroduction: The Flashback B-Plot shows that Luz met Hunter when he was 12, about a month after she befriended Willow and Gus.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: Iggy's a witch, but has monkey hands for feet.
  • Noodle Incident: Edric and Emira once pranked Cat into believing she was turned into a mouse.
  • No, You: When Hunter (age 12) calls the human stuff "lame", Luz (age 10) calls him lame.
  • Parodies for Dummies: In order to understand Luz's transformation, Viney asks Dr. Bride if she has anything for studying a human body. The doctor gives her a book called "The Human Body for Dumb-Butts."
  • Playing with Fire: Skara shoots a fireball to burn Bangles' bandages in order to free Luz from her grasp.
  • Point of Divergence: Luz is revealed to have befriended Hunter way earlier.
  • Rescue Romance: Luz comes to Amity's defense upon finding the muggers about to cut her.
  • The Reveal:
    • Luz and Eda met Hunter one month after Luz befriended Willow and Gus. They currently don't know he's the Golden Guard.
    • A Frankenstein-esque person from the human world named Dr. Bride lives in Latissa, working as a doctor and Luz's physician. She also has an assistant named Iggy.
    • Cat has two brother named Dog and Moose. Dog, the older brother, is a student at Merlin Meadows.
    • Lilith and Odalia are Amicable Exes who dated during their time as students.
    • Nicole, who went to Hexside with the Clawthorne sisters, Odalia and Alador, studied in the Potion track like Eda and Lilith.
    • Odalia is revealed to have a brother.
    • Bangles and Zepher admit to mugging Levi and had to lay low after some of their accomplices were arrested. Zepher reveals he saw Amity at the Covention and figured out who she is when they robbed her.
    • Zepher is shown to specialize in construction magic.
  • Security Cling: Upon seeing Luz after she deals with the muggers, Amity immediately hugs her and refuses to let go.
  • Sequel Hook: It's going to take three weeks before Luz's test results regarding her condition are complete.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Luz practices asking out Amity with Hooty who rejects her. This calls to mind the same scene between Gru having a minion stand in for practice in asking out Lucy in Despicable Me 2.
    • The mummy girl is named "Bangles", after the 80's band.
    • Brian is based off of Riff-Raff from The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
    • Paul McCarthy's "Live and Let Die" is heard over the fight sequence.
  • Sock It to Them: Luz hands Viney a sock full of rocks to use on creeps in Latissa.
  • Troll: Viney flat-out blurts to Dr. Bride that Luz means "crush" more than "special friend" when Luz tells the doctor about Amity.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Like so many other people in the past, Bangles and Zepher take one look at Luz's ears and dismiss her as no threat. They soon eat their own words.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Luz is completely unfazed at the sight of a knife in her back. Everyone else takes it seriously.
Cat: How can you be so calm about this!?
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Luz and Hunter demonstrate this dynamic in present day, exchanging friendly banter and the occasional insult.
  • Wham Episode: Luz is revealed to be friends with Hunter, helps him put Amity's muggers behind bars and finally manages to ask Amity out on a date! And she chooses to have it in Gravity Falls.
  • Year Inside, Hour Outside: Cat mentions time moves faster in the shadow realm, hence why she's returned faster than anyone expects.
