Art by Crash X Fusion: Friends fight; that's a fact. How fast they make up is subjective.
During the annual Moonlight Conjuring, Luz invites her friends over, Eda meets a mysterious shopkeeper, an argument puts a friendship in question, all while someone's sneaking around at night.

Tropes that appear in this Chapter

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Like with Skara and Amelia in Chapter 7, Cat makes her vocal debut by speaking during "Hooty's Moving Hassle" instead of "Wing It Like Witches".
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • Morton rarely interacts with Luz in the parent work, but since he's known her for much longer, they're more acquainted with one another.
    • The Demon Hunters are also more antagonistic towards the Clawthornes thanks to Luz messing with them a year ago.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Willow fires one at Luz for her attempts to get payback.
Willow: When will this end, Luz? When are you going to be satisfied until you cross the line? How much revenge does it take for you to be satisfied!? Cuz if that's the way you want to live your life, then I don't want to be a part of it any longer!
  • Both Sides Have a Point: Luz and Willow's argument. Luz says she can't just stand aside and do nothing while someone messes with her friends while Willow points out Luz always goes too far, her attempts of revenge making her victims angrier than before.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Two accounts. The Demon Hunters wouldn't have attacked the kids at the Owl House if Luz hadn't pranked them and Eyepatch could've been spared a lot of pain if he hadn't grabbed Luz by the neck and just accepted her apology.
  • The Cameo:
    • Anu Bist is briefly shown hiding in the shadows after giving Gus an RPG game.
    • Katya, the vampire girl Luz busted out of the Conformatorium, points Eda and King to her father's shop to get elixers.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The "Offices and Supplies" game, which the kids enchant with moonlight magic so they can take on the Demon Hunters.
  • Cooldown Hug: Eda has to restrain Luz in order to give her one of these to stop her from attacking Eyepatch any further.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Boscha has really gotten used to calling Luz "Luzer".
    • The mentioning of Eda being a show witch once in the previous chapter's flashbacks is verified: she worked as a burlesque dancer when Luz was 10.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Willow admits she wanted Amity to be taken down a peg, but knowing Luz had a hand in doing so for her sake makes her feel guilty.
    • The demon hunters don't swear on account of their nomadic ways.
  • Everyone Meets Everyone: Willow and Gus interact with the troublemakers for the first time. With Amity spending the night, it marks the first time all of Luz's friends are gathered together.
  • Flashback Cut: When Eda says she doesn't quit every job she gets, we're treated to 3 flashbacks at different points in the past when she did.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Luz trying to get Boscha to leave Willow and Gus alone when she started at Hexside is mentioned.
    • The phone call Luz made and the picture of the boy on her nightstand play important parts later, as does Vanz Ator's statement of helping another Clawthorne.
  • Freak Out: Luz goes ballistic on Eyepatch when he makes the mistake of threatening her life.
  • Gosh Darn It to Heck!: Eyepatch says that Luz has "fudged" with the Demon Hunters for the last time. When Luz lampshades this, he states as nomads, the hunters have common courtesy.
  • Groin Attack: Eyepatch gets hit below the belt by Luz for threatening her life.
  • Hidden Weapons: Amity had been keeping a knife in her binder, which Skara discovers.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Eda saying she doesn't quit every job she's ever had is rebuffed by three Flashback Cuts that show her doing just that.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Gus meets Anu Bist for the first time.
    • Eda and King learn Amity got mugged.
  • In the Hood: Barcus wears a red hoodie as his casual attire.
  • Kick the Dog: The old man who got held back for 20 years to complete his glass statue without magic is disappointed when Boscha's scream shatters it.
  • Makes Us Even: When Vanz Ator realizes he's talking to Eda, who busted his daughter Katya out of custody at the Conformatorium, he gives her an elixer on the house, declaring this between them.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: The kids use the RPG game (the one where you have to roleplay as office workers) in a moonlight conjuring to fight the Demon Hunters off.
  • Mundane Wish: The guy testing out the Lion's paw wishes he knew what it it could do earlier. Time moves back one minute.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: The kids keep the demon hunters at bay through their conjured game characters. Luz ends up dishing one on Eyepatch after he grabs her, pressing her Berserk Button in the accidental process.
  • Noodle Incident: Last year's moonlight conjuring at the Owl House ended with Luz giving Tom a concussion, which led to him developing a fear of her.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Eda when she quit her past job guiding kids through traffic and King asks if she was guiding kids when she did.
    • Willow and Gus share one after Eyepatch grabs Luz and doesn't listen to their warnings to let her go.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • The moonlight conjuring that brought Hooty to life already occurred the previous year, with Eda having been collecting junk in the human realm when the kids got captured by the Demon Hunters. In the present, Amity cancels her conjuring in order to find the muggers, so Boscha holds one of her own. Eda doesn't get her elixir from Tibbles as his stand is crushed by the time she and King arrive at the night market.
    • Gus has been friends with Willow for at least 4 years, while in the Distant Prologue to "Labyrinth Runners", they've been friends during their earlier Hexside days.
    • Luz learned how to use the fire and ice glyphs to create mist at some point prior to this chapter's basis, a trick she doesn't come up with until "Hunting Palismen" in Season 2.
  • Plot-Mandated Friendship Failure: Because of Luz's attempt to launch a salmon at Boscha via slingshot, then actually using it to pelt the Demon Hunters with eggs, she and Willow argue about how Luz always goes too far with getting revenge and causes more harm than good, all while she tries to justify it as defending her friends. As a result, their friendship becomes strained.
  • Rejected Apology: Luz attempts to apologize to Eyepatch for taking her anger out on him and his hunters. He doesn't accept it.
  • The Reveal:
    • Amity was assigned to the Illusion track after the ghost infestation.
    • Prof. Blanc's taken to panhandling for change outside Hexaide since the Abomination track is under repairs.
    • According to Morton, Eda had nine other jobs before becoming a groundskeeper. Three of them were being a Newt Burger employee, a crossing guard, and a burlesque floor dancer.
    • The previous moonlight conjuring, Luz, Willow and Gus brought Hooty to life while Eda was in the Human Realm and got captured by the Demon Hunters trying to prank Amity.
    • Luz met Willow and Gus four years ago.
    • Luz has learned to create a steam/mist spell.
  • Secret-Keeper:
    • Amity forces Skara into secrecy when the bard finds a knife in her binder.
    • When Willow asks about Amity being with Eda and King, Eda covers for Amity (who was searching for her muggers) by saying she found her at the library and she decided to spent the night at the Owl House.
  • Secretly Selfish: Willow accuses Luz of this due to her desire to get vengeance on her enemies and justifying it as defending her friends.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Sole Survivor: Eda says she was lucky to quit the burlesque floor show when she did for this reason;
Eda: That show got shut down due to health regulations and all the dancers but me caught the plague.
  • Song Parody: "Cauldron Store" to "Candy Store" from Heathers.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: When Boscha confronts Amity about canceling the Moonlight Conjuring at her house, Amity tells her to just throw one of her own.
  • Trauma Button: Boscha accidentally and unknowingly presses Amity's when she grabs her arm.
  • The Un-Reveal: Although it's hinted Vanz Ator destroyed Tibbles' stand, it's never brought up after it happens.
  • Wham Episode: Luz and Willow's friendship becomes strained while Eda and King learn about Amity being mugged.
