Recap / Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia S 16 E 02 Frank Shoots Every Every Member

Go To

Frank accidentally shoots Dennis and Dee, causing them to devise a plan to confiscate his gun. Charlie and Mac go on a road trip with their moms in search of Charlie's long-forgotten sisters and Mac's uncle to retrieve family heirlooms.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Abusive Parents:
    • Mac's mom burns her son with a cigarette as he talks out of turn and it's accepted as the norm.
    • Frank manages to shoot both Dee and Dennis in one bullet, and berates them both for being dramatic when they're upset.
    • Bonnie bursts into screaming tears when Charlie calls her out on giving the jar of teeth away, and completely turns around the guilt so he's the one who has to apologize.
  • All for Nothing: Dennis and Dee aren't able to keep Frank's gun away from him, Mac's mom wipes herself with his grandfather's letters and flushes them down the toilet, and Charlie can't get the family jar of teeth from his sisters, with the replacement jar being accidentally shot to pieces by Frank. And in the end, they all get shot by Frank (including Frank).
  • Black Comedy: Mac's uncle is persecuted for being gay and despondent about being rejected by his father, and Mac completely lacks empathy about both.
  • Catchphrase: Mrs. Mac's grunted yes as a response to almost everything.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • DIY Dentistry: Bonnie is so terrified of telling Charlie she doesn't have the family heirloom teeth that she pulls out her own with a pair of pliers. It goes poorly.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • Even Dennis and Dee are appalled at Frank's suggestion that they kill him.
    • Charlie is appalled by how poorly his younger sisters treat their mother, and them calling Mac a homophobic slur out of genuine hatred (as opposed to Frank, who had said to to save Mac's life). He's also disgusted with Mac coldly dismissing his uncle's attempts to connect with him.
  • Exact Words: The title of the episode is "Frank Shoots Every Member of the Gang". So he winds up shooting himself with his gun, as well.
  • Face Death with Dignity: When Frank thinks his children are going to murder him, he's pretty cordial about it and says his only request is that he can look away.
  • Flanderization: Even extreme for Frank as he appears to have the mental IQ of a dog. It's likely lampshading.
  • Gay Euphemism: Donald McDonald mentions several times that he doesn't have kids because he was a bachelor, but funny, and they didn't really talk about it in those days. Mac pretends to have no idea what he's talking about.
  • Gilligan Cut: Like several other episodes, the Title Drop is presented as one:
Frank: It's not like anybody's in any real danger.
(cut to title card) Frank Shoots Every Member of the Gang
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • Mac's mom, a notorious chain smoker, is on a health kick and refuses to roll down her window because she says it's bad for her health.
    • Frank tells Dennis he's out of the will because Dennis might shoot him. This comes moments after Frank asks Dennis and Dee to kill him.
      • Dee is horrified at the idea of shooting Frank for his inheritance, despite having actively plotted to do exactly that in The Gang Solves the Gas Crisis.
    • Mac's uncle Donald is literally everything his own father isn't (aside from also being played by Gregory Scott Cummins) and fulfills every criteria Mac has been missing in the father-son relationship he's so strongly desired from Luther, yet Mac doesn't give a single shit about any of it and can't be in a quicker hurry to get out the door. Charlie lampshades all of this with utter incredulity.
    • Charlie's sisters call their mother a slut for being a former sex worker. They are current sex workers.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • Dennis and Dee are obviously angling to get back in the will, but they're not wrong that Frank is reckless with his gun and likes to keep them dependent on him.
    • Charlie's younger sisters are selfish, bigoted brats, but they're correct when they point out to Charlie that the jar of teeth is their rightful property since Bonnie passed it down to them.
    • Despite harshly calling her a slut to prove their point, Charlie’s sisters do have a point that their mother shouldn’t pass judgement on them for being sex workers while she herself was one.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After all of his Reckless Gun Usage throughout the episode, Frank winds up getting hit by his own ricocheted bullet at the end of the episode.
  • Last Day to Live: Frank mistakenly thinks that Dee and Dennis are giving him a great day for this purpose. It turns out, they want this to be Frank's last day as a gun owner.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Mac says he forgot Charlie had sisters. Considering they were only briefly seen 15 seasons ago, this is probably true for most viewers as well. The creators of the show have also admitted to entirely forgetting about them.
  • Parental Favoritism: Mac's grandfather only ever wrote to Mac's father Luther and never to his other son Donald.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Bunny and Candy start shooting homophobic slurs toward Mac and Charlie when they notice that them and their moms are in their house.
  • Reckless Gun Usage: Frank's carelessness with his gun has gotten so out of hand that he accidentally shoots Dennis and Dee, leading to the two of them trying to confiscate his gun permanently.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Mac and Charlie fail to get the heirlooms they spent the entire episode trying to obtain, and Dennis and Dee fail to take Frank's gun away from him. Frank's continued Reckless Gun Usage results in him shooting the vase Charlie took as a new heirloom, and a final negligent discharge hits the entire gang with ricochets, Frank included.
  • Spoiler Title: The titular shooting of everyone but Dennis and Dee happens in the episode's closing moments.
  • Toilet Paper Substitute: Mac's mom uses the family heirloom letters on the toilet, destroying them.
  • Uncanny Family Resemblance: Donald McDonald, like his brother Luther, is played by Gregory Scott Cummins.
