Recap / Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia S 01 E 07 Charlie Got Molested

Go To

"Holy shit. Charlie got molested."
Dennis

When news hits of Mac and Charlie's elementary school gym teacher (played by Dennis Haskinsnote ) getting arrested for molesting his students, Charlie suddenly gets nervous. Dee and Dennis conclude that Charlie may have been one of the gym teacher's victims, and Mac becomes jealous that he wasn't one of the gym teacher's alleged victims.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: Mac is insulted that he wasn't molested as he believes himself to have been a cuter kid than Charlie and the McPoyles. He then sets about trying to seduce the gym teacher in order to make himself feel better.
  • Asshole Victim: After being forced to go with the McPoyles to the police station to file a report about Coach "molesting" him, Charlie makes it clear while he is leaving that what he actually did was rat them out.
  • Big Ol' Unibrow: Both the McPoyle twins sport these.
  • Black Comedy Rape: The entire episode plays the concept of child molestation for laughs.
  • Blackmail: The McPoyles threaten Charlie not to go to the police or they'll implicate him on conspiracy charges, since the whole molestation thing was technically his idea in the first place.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Charlie mentions having a sister present at the intervention who isn't seen or mentioned again until Season 16. Charlie also has a grandmother, presumably Bonnie Kelly's mother, who doesn't appear again.
  • Continuity Nod: We already know that Mac and Charlie went to the same elementary school.
  • Creepy Uncle: Charlie's Uncle Jack, who seems a little too keen for him to show them on the doll where he was molested.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: The McPoyles make up a false story about their old gym teacher molesting them because he was a dick to them in school.
  • The Ditz: Ryan McPoyle is not the sharpest tool in the shed, and seems to think that they can split the money "fifty-fifty-fifty".
Liam: You even hear what you're saying?
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Mac is the first one to realize that Charlie wasn't molested (because he was a psycho in school and no sexual predator would want to go near him), to which Dennis and Dee respond by condescendingly telling him to leave it to the real "psychologists".
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • Dennis and Dee are disgusted when Mac's anger over hearing that Charlie and the McPoyles were molested was that he wasn't deemed attractive enough to molest, bluntly telling him that he's going to hell.
    • Charlie is disgusted by the McPoyles lying about something as serious as getting molested and eventually turns them over to the police. Downplayed in that it was still his idea in the first place and he gets off scott-free for it.
  • False Rape Accusation: The McPoyles falsely claim that they were molested by their old gym teacher in the hopes of winning some compensation money.
  • Gilligan Cut: When the McPoyles remind Charlie that their plan was technically his idea:
    Charlie: I was joking!
    [cut to "one year ago"]
Charlie: I'm not joking, though! I'm not joking, I'm really not. I wouldn't even joke about something like that.
  • Good Cop/Bad Cop: Dennis and Dee respectively while trying to get Charlie to admit to being molested.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Despite busting the McPoyles for their scheme, Charlie still is under the cloud of his family thinking he was molested, so he ends the episode gathering a bunch of bottles of beer and going into the office to drink heavily.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: Both Dennis and Dee seem to think of themselves as experts in psychology because they both studied in college (Dennis minored and passed, while Dee failed her major). Needless to say, neither of them are anywhere near as knowledgeable as they think they are.
  • Lame Comeback:
Dennis: I don't even know how to respond to that.
Dee: Well, that doesn't surprise me.
Dennis: Well, it shouldn't, because what you said is really... dumb.
    Dee: That's a good one.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: With a mix of Didn't Think This Through, the McPoyle brothers and Charlie go to the police station so the latter can confess to being molested. The brothers didn't take into account that Charlie would go to another room to tell an officer what the brothers were planning.
Charlie: Yeah, I ratted you out.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Charlie makes it clear at the end of the episode to Dennis and Dee that because they assumed he was molested, their attempts to "help" actually ruined his life. They do not get it.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Dennis and Dee conclude that Charlie was molested due to his odd behavior after hearing the news.
  • Phrase Catcher: Several characters tell Mac that he's going to hell over the course of the episode.
  • Prison Rape: The McPoyles imply this, stating that prison can be "a very bad place" for a guy like Charlie. They later say the same thing about the gym teacher.
  • Revenge: Part of the McPoyles' motivation is that they hate their old coach. The other part is Greed.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Mac does research on molestation and realizes Charlie wasn't molested not because the charges the McPoyles made were fake, but because he was crazy even as a child, so no sexual predator would want to deal with that since it's more about power and control. While he's right about Charlie not being molested, he comes to the wrong conclusion about the McPoyles and thinks they did get molested.
  • Skewed Priorities: Mac is more concerned with whether or not Charlie got "blown" than the fact he may have been molested.
  • Staging an Intervention: Dennis and Dee gather together Charlie's extended family to make him admit that he was molested. Since the McPoyles are there, he's forced to go along with it.
  • Teacher/Student Romance: Dee admits that she had sex with one of her college professors.
  • Villainous Incest: Ryan and Liam McPoyle are fraternal twin brothers with a creepily close relationship. When Charlie goes to visit them, Liam lets it slip that they both just got out of the shower.
