Recap / Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia S 13 E 06 Gang Solves The Bathroom Problem

Go To

"This whole bathroom issue is a simple problem with a simple solution. So why don't we just sit here, and let's just figure it out."
-Dennis

The gang is excited to attend a Jimmy Buffett concert, but gets sidetracked into a debate over gender neutral bathrooms when Mac comes out of the women's room.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Artistic License – Biology: Played for Laughs when Charlie incorrectly thinks pee comes from the testicles.
  • The Bear: Mac insists that he's this after Charlie calls him a twink (specifically, a "stupid twink").note
  • Berserk Button:
    • Charlie flies into a rage and physically attacks Mac after he says there's no such thing as ghouls.
    • Mac responds in kind after Charlie calls him a "twink". Even earlier, Mac physically attacks Dee when she calls him "antiquated".
  • Bigger on the Inside: The interior of the ladies' room at Paddy's is seen for the first time. It is largely similar to the mens' room, with a few small variations (for example, the stalls are on the opposite wall to the door), Problem is, there is no way this configuration can fit into the space indicated by the main Paddy's set.
  • Bottle Episode: The entire episode takes place inside Paddy's and only features the gang.
  • Call-Back:
  • Can't Bathe Without a Weapon: Frank reveals he always carries a gun on him when going to the bathroom. Otherwise he "can't make".
  • Character Development: It's subtle, but the gang sans Frank all use the correct terminology to refer to transgender people, which is a long way from their treatment of Carmen in the earlier seasons.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Charlie apparently thinks that pee is stored in the balls. He also needs it spelled out for him that he's white and a man.
  • Creepy Crossdresser: It's revealed that Charlie has to wear a dress, wig and heels in order to poop thanks to his mom dressing him up as a girl to take him into the women's bathroom when he was a child.
  • Dress-Up Episode: The gang are all dressed in Hawaiian shirts in preparation for the Jimmy Buffett concert.
  • Friendship Moment: When Mac and Dee, both usually The Friend Nobody Likes, refuse to go to the concert after the others vote for only straight white men to use the good bathroom, Dennis, Frank and Charlie decide there's no point any of them going if they don't all go.
Frank: There's no sense in going to Buffett if we're not all gonna go.
  • Have I Mentioned I Am Gay?: The rest of the gang are annoyed by Mac constantly doing this.
  • He-Man Woman Hater: Mac admits that he finds women "disgusting." He later states he thinks a vagina looks like roadkill.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
Mac: We have to give voices to those who have no voice.
    Dee: He's right.
Mac: SHUT UP, DEE, I'M TALKING!
  • Ignored Epiphany: When Dee realizes that they should treat other people as they themselves want to be treated, the whole gang tells her to shut up.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: Franks admits he's never read the Constitution seconds after claiming that he has.
  • The Internet Is for Porn: Implied when Mac asks to use the laptop and comes back four hours later, adjusting his shorts, admitting he's "chaffed", and asking how to remove Russian malware.
  • Literal-Minded: When the idea of a genderfluid bathroom is suggested, Charlie states that he doesn't like thinking about "gender fluids".
  • The Loins Sleep Tonight: Frank admits he has trouble getting an erection at his age at night.
  • Men Can't Keep House: The main reason the guys all want to use the women's bathroom is that it's a lot cleaner than the men's.
  • No Listening Skills: Mac has crashed two laptops overloading them with viruses due to his excessive porn usage. When Mac goes off to make a sign using the computer, the entire Gang points this out and tells him that he can't use their current laptop. He does it anyway, spending hours to find all of the dick pics he needs to make a sign, walking and clutching his pants as though he had spent the whole time masturbating and admitting he crashed their new laptop again.
  • No, You:
Mac: The whole men's and women's bathroom thing is antiquated.
    Dee: Maybe you're antiquated.
  • Nobody Poops: Averted; the gang ultimately agree that pooping is the one thing that unites them all.
  • Opinion Flip Flop: Charlie is extremely easily swayed by virtually every argument that's put forth, especially considering he pays more attention to their clothes and tone than they do the actual content.
  • Pixellation: Played for laughs when Mac brings out a sign that's supposedly just a collage of dicks.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Frank refers to intersex people as "he-she's", draws a dollar symbol to represent Jews and referring to Hawaiians as "savages" for putting pineapple on pizza.
Dennis: Why are we bringing religion into this at all?
Frank: Because I wanna know who’s in there! Because it’ll make me feel safer.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis Failure: Everyone except Dennis thinks that "The Pina Colada Song" (Rupert Holmes) is a Jimmy Buffett song. Charlie later thinks "Kokomo" (The Beach Boys) is also by Buffett.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Dennis repeatedly has to chastise Frank for his bigoted views, as it keeps undermining the arguments Dennis is trying to make.
  • Precision F-Strike: Mac tells Dee to shut the fuck up.
  • Ripped from the Headlines: Based on the bathroom controversy surrounding transgender people in the late 2010s.
  • Running Gag: Frank pulls his gun on the others, claiming that he always takes it into the toilet with him to feel safe.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: At one point Dee suggests that they just put a sign reading "toilet" on each of the bathrooms. Subverted when even that doesn't work.
  • Toilet Humor: A fair bit of it, as to be expected in an episode primarily revolving around bathrooms.
  • Unwanted Assistance: Dennis tells Frank to stop helping him make his case, mostly because Frank's idea of "helping" involves lots of casual racism.
  • Wondrous Ladies Room: Paddy's ladies room is much cleaner and well kept, which is why Mac uses it.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Mac tries to strangle Dee. Again.
  • Your Approval Fills Me with Shame: Dennis notes that he hates it when Frank is on his side because Frank's racism is not helpful.
