Recap / Fairy May Cry, 40 "Goodbye Edolas"

Go To

Thanks to Mystogan, all magic is sent back to Earthland, including the members of Fairy Tail, who leave one last impression on the people of Edolas, while saying final farewells to their counterparts.

  • Achievements in Ignorance: Prince Jellal's plan was to remove magic from Edolas with the Anima, but he was unaware that it would expel anyone with innate magical power like the Exceeds and Earthland residents. This helped further sell his victory over the 'Demon Lord Dragneel'.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: King Faust, especially from the reactions of the citizens and military. Even Mystogan is saddened to see his father killed.
  • Asshole Victim: King Faust's corpse was used to emphasise the threat of 'Demon Lord Dragneel'. Downplayed given that even the ones who hated his guts are uncomfortable with it.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Natsu per usual, while Prince Jellal proves his own chops by going toe-to-toe with him.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Fairy Tail is able to rescue their guildmates and all of Magnolia, avenge Edolas Fairy Tail's master by killing Nelo Angelo, and bring Lisanna back to Earthland, and Mystogan becomes the new king of Edolas, leading the kingdom to a brighter future. Sadly, the Exceeds are forced to leave Edolas, Fairy Tail says goodbye to Mystogan, and Mira and Elfman's Edolas counterparts are forced to let their sister go again.
  • But Now I Must Go: The Earthland members of Fairy Tail and the exceeds are pulled towards the anima as they bid farewell to their friends in Edolas.
  • Cooldown Hug: Edolas Eva gives one to Dante when he starts to break down after revealing her counterpart was his mother.
  • The Cutie: Wendy joins in the Zero-Approval Gambit as one of 'Demon Lord Dragneel's' minions, and is unable to scare so much as a single child. Lampshaded by Modeus, who asks why Dante included her in the plan, who replies that she insisted.
  • Death Glare: How Gajeel intimidates a boy that Wendy was failing to scare.
  • Destructive Savior: Discussed by Dante, who points out Natsu's status as this makes him perfect to be the fall guy, being an expert in causing damage without seriously hurting anyone.
  • Didn't See That Coming:
    • Jellal and Panther-Lily didn't expect someone else to set up their own Zero-Approval Gambit.
    • Edolas Fairy Tail were shocked to find that Eva's Earthland counterpart was Dante's mother.
  • The End of the World as We Know It: How the people of Edolas treat the loss of magic.
  • End of an Age: How Jellal frames the loss of magic for Edolas, treating it as the beginning of a new future rather than just the loss of their old way of life.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite everything he did to them and their allies, and justifiably hating his guts, all the present members of Fairy Tail, Edolas and Earthland, find the use of Fausts corpse as a prop to be morbid.
  • Evil Is Hammy: Natsu's "Demon Lord Dragneel" persona constantly speaks in an over the top manner, complete with an Evil Laugh.
  • Exact Words: Gajeel tells 'Demon Lord Dragneel' to quit calling him and Wendy servants, to which he replies, "Just do what I tell you to, slave!" Gajeel grumbles he should have been more specific.
  • Guile Hero:
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The typically relaxed and snarky Dante is unusually quiet when telling Edolas Eva that her Earthland counterpart was his mother, as well as what happened to her.
  • Platonic Declaration of Love: Wendy gives one to Jellal, while thanking him for being her first friend.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • It is Mary to help a child find their parent rather than Lucy Ashley.
    • Dante is the one to come up with the plan for the 'Demon Lord Dragneel'.
    • Edolas Eva and Mirajane are present with the rest of Edolas Fairy Tail. Likewise, the Earthland members accompany them all to the capital to help out, and witness the 'Demon Lord Dragneel' in action.
    • King Fausts death makes the people of Edolas even more horrified, further buying in to Natsu's act.
    • While being pulled through the reverse anima, Wendy bids Jellal farewell, who reciprocates.
    • Unlike canon where she briefly tries to stay, here Lisanna willingly goes along with the reverse anima, bidding her siblings Edolas counterparts farewell on warm terms.
  • Satanic Archetype: Invoked by Natsu as part of his 'Demon Lord Dragneel' act, wielding fire, having horns, and declaring one of his 'minions' (Nelo Angelo) killed Faust on his orders. All of which makes Jellal all the more impressive upon defeating him.
  • Ship Tease: As everyone is bidding their Edolas counterparts farewell, Mary wishes Lady luck with Dante, eliciting a blush from the girl.
  • So Proud of You: Edolas Eva expresses this to her niece Lucy, and especially Dante upon learning he is her Earthland counterparts son.
  • Take a Third Option: Rather than Jellal or Panther-Lily acting as the fall guy, Nabi informs Dante who gets Natsu to play the role.
  • Team Mom: Edolas Eva, comforting Dante after learning of their relation in Earthland, and keeping the spirits of her guildmates up.
  • Tears of Joy: Abundant amongst the people of Earthland bidding farewell to their Edolas counterparts. Special mention to Wendy's Platonic Declaration of Love to Jellal, Lisanna to her siblings Edolas counterparts, and Dante to Edolas Eva, happy at having spoken to his mother again.
  • True Companions: Fairy Tail remind their counterparts that it takes more than magic to make a guild,, implicitly reminding them of this.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: King Faust maintains this status to the end, the people of the kingdom being outrage upon seeing his corpse.
  • Worthy Opponent: As they part ways, both versions of Erza express this to each other.
  • Zero-Approval Gambit: Dante and Natsu use Jellal's plan with their own spin, having Natsu pose as the "Demon Lord Dragneel", the master of Nelo Angelo, and the one who took away Edolas' magic.
