Carmen: This has been one crazy day, <Player's Name>. We're flying to Kenya to stop a SOMBRA operation and end up crashing in Madagascar!

The Bureau takes a plane to Kenya to follow the SOMBRA recruits that were shipped from their volcano island and now are being dispersed all over the world. Unfortunately, their flight gets unexpectedly cut short after an engine explosion brings down the plane in Antananarivo, Madagascar, which then goes From Bad to Worse when Jakobo Nkosi, their pilot, gets his throat slashed while trying to bring help from the Embassy.

Tropes:

  • "Ass" in Ambassador: Ambassador Alex Lange, though he's more akin to a lazy Dirty Old Man than a Jerkass.
  • Blackmail: Alex had been using Jakobo's plane to host "private parties" with young and barely dressed ladies, which Jakobo took a photo of and used to blackmail Alex.
Alex: Jakobo demanded I give him some high-profile contacts for charter flights. Otherwise, he'd expose my "extra-curricular activities"!
  • Blame Game: Despite being friends, Jakobo and Ninah often accused each other about whose fault was that the plane had imperfections, with Jakobo claiming that she was performing a poor mechanical job while Ninah argued that he was negligent.
  • Breaking Bad News Gently: When Elliot informs you the sordid truth about someone from the Bureau working for SOMBRA, he asks you to sit down first and slowly explains everything before delivering the blow.
  • The Cavalry Arrives Late: Jakobo did deliver the message to the embassy requesting help for the passengers of the crashed plane, but they took hours to arrive so the Bureau decided to walk by themselves. The ambassador has this to say:
Alex: And don't worry about that help, I'm sure it's on the way!
Carmen: Obviously, we won't be needing it anymore, we're all safe now!
Alex: That's splendid then, one less thing I have to do!
  • Cold Sniper: The murderer took down the Bureau's plane by shooting at the engine with a sniper rifle, then latter attempts to kill Carmen and the player by shooting at them from afar.
  • Coming in Hot: After the engine explodes, Jakobo barely manages to "safely" land the plane atop of a tree, with everyone inside the plane only receiving minor injuries and scratches while the vehicle gets totally wrecked.
  • Corrupt Bureaucrat: Ambassador Alex Lange is a lazy, incompetent pervert who prefers to party than perform his job.
Carmen: You host charter flight parties with scantily-clad young women... because you're bored?!
Alex: Parties, alcohol, women... anything to get me through the day!
  • Dirty Old Man: You find a photo of Ambassador Lange partying with a pair of scantily-clad young women on the victim's plane, which he claims is necessary to get him through the day.
  • Downer Beginning: This case, which serves as the beginning of Africa, has the horrible revelation of someone from inside the Bureau working for SOMBRA, issuing them with the plane's confidential coordinates and travel route which allowed them to bring it down.
  • Drugs Are Bad: Jasmine Hart, Jakobo's co-pilot, had been flying under the effect of drugs for some time, which led to him trying to report her which would've led to Jasmine losing her flying license. Of course, this makes Jasmine a strong suspect in Carmen's eyes.
  • Everyone Is a Suspect: According to Elliot, anyone from the Bureau could be The Mole, since all of them have access to the encryption that SOMBRA received and used to bring down the plane.
Elliot: Michelle doesn't have access to our systems, so it couldn't possibly have been her. But apart from her, everyone here can access them!
Carmen: So you're saying no one in the Bureau is beyond suspicion?
    Elliot: I'm afraid not.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Aristide wears one, and he's a pretty badass (if evil) ex-soldier.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: Chief Ripley and the Bureau have this opinion of Michelle, claiming that, while useful to have around, she's still untrustworthy due to her past ties with SOMBRA and thus has a long way before she can earn their trust.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: Continuing from the previous case, Michelle is travelling along the Bureau as an unofficial member due to her useful information regarding SOMBRA.
  • Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy / Improbable Aiming Skills: Aristide, the killer, alternates between both of these in this case, as he flawlessly manages to bring down a plane from the sky by shooting the engine with a sniper rifle but somehow misses all his shots aimed at the grounded Carmen and player, with no indication that he just wanted to scare them up.
  • Irrational Hatred: Carmen has reasons to believe SOMBRA is extra-angry at the Bureau due to the destruction of their island despite the fact that it was a volcanic eruption which brought it down.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: Aristide intended to kill the entire Bureau by shooting down the plane from the ground and make it look like an engine failure, but Jakobo's piloting skills managed to barely save them all with only minor injuries.
  • Mischief-Making Monkey: When the team climbs the tree down to look for their missing pilot, the first thing that happens to Jack is having a lemur stick to his face.
Carmen: Urgh, Jack! We're not outside five minutes and you're already disturbing the local wildlife!
  • The Mole: At the end of the case, is revealed that someone from withing the Bureau sent the plane's coordinates to SOMBRA, which allowed them to make the plane crash in the first place. Chief Ripley is specially aggravated by this information.
  • Out of the Frying Pan: The killer sent a message to Jakobo reading "Out of the frying pan and into the fire! You won't survive my anonymous intervention!", which thanks to the last phrase Marina manages to deduce the killer has some sort of addiction.
  • Overly Long Gag: Patrick Bota, a raffia palm farmer, enjoys detailing absolutely everything you can do with the plant.
Patrick: Raffia palms, now there's something I can tell you a lot about! Very diverse plant, the raffia. You can use the fibers to make raffia rope, raffia baskets, raffia twine...
Raffia hats, raffia shoes, raffia clothing, raffia rugs...
Carmen: Ok, raffia, we get it!
  • The Pollyanna: Dupont tries to make the best out of the situation by claiming that he always wanted to visit Madagascar, so he isn't that concerned about the Bureau's plane crashing down in the country.
  • Professional Killer: Aristide Akintola, the killer, is an ex-soldier who turned into a hired gun, and SOMBRA ordered him to kill the entire Bureau by making their plane crash.
  • Public Secret Message: How SOMBRA communicates with their agents in Africa's remotest places with scarce technology: by putting encoded messages on weather patterns and coordinates that only they can understand.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Aristide decided to murder Jakobo first to take revenge for getting him kicked out of military, ruining his original plan of killing the Bureau when they decided to investigate and found Jakobo's body.
  • Shout-Out: Aristide Akintola resembles The Demoman.
  • Skewed Priorities: Lars tells you he wouldn't have minded dying on the crash, as it would've been a perfect death for a "rock star" like him.
Lars: Do you know how many rock superstars have died in airplane crashes? I would've been a legend!
  • Slashed Throat: How the victim was killed.
  • Unishment: What Aristide thinks of his 30-year sentence.
Aristide: You might as well make it a life sentence, I won't live to serve all that! But it was worth it, I'm glad that backstabbing dog is underground!
  • Villain Ball: Instead of murdering the Bureau like he was ordered to, Aristide instead decided to take revenge on Jakobo by killing him first, derailing said plan and ultimately getting him arrested.
Carmen: What? Are you saying you intended to kill us... even before we got on your trail?!
Aristide: Yes, but I saw that backstabbing scoundrel first, running towards town. My anger got the better of me and couldn't resist taking him out on his way back to the plane!
  • We Used to Be Friends: Aristide and Jakobo were good buddies while they were in the military as pilots, but when Aristide lost his eye, Jakobo claimed he couldn't be there anymore and got him kicked out of it, ruining their friendship. It's actually the reason why he decided to murder Jakobo instead of the Bureau.
  • Wham Line: This one issued by Elliot when he reveals there's a traitor inside the Bureau.
Carmen: What the hell are you talking about?! Someone inside the Bureau GAVE information to SOMBRA?!
Elliot: That's exactly what I'm saying <Player's Name>... someone at the Bureau is working for SOMBRA.
  • Wrench Wench: Ninah Zafy, an old friend from the victim who also works as a mechanic, appears as a suspect.
