Recap / Chainsaw Man - Bat

    Synopsis
Denji patrolled with Power but found her far too obnoxious, and began wondering whether his hope to feel her breasts was worth it. Especially after she killed a Sea Cucumber Devil that was already being exterminated by a private Devil Hunter and tried to place the blame for her impulsive actions onto Denji. While on a break, Power declared her disdain for both Devils and humans, but affirmed her love for her pet cat Meowy, who had been abducted by a Devil. She tried to convince Denji to help her rescue Meowy, though the aforementioned obnoxious personality (and his own preference for dogs similar to Pochita) made Denji unwilling… until Power offered to let him touch her boobs, at which he exploded with righteous fury that the Devil that kidnapped Meowy deserved to be destroyed and that he’ll help her.

After Makima finished a meeting with her superiors, Aki questioned her decision to recruit Denji. Makima merely explained the conceit behind a Devil’s power through fear of their name and said that Denji’s Chainsaw Devil form merely interested her.

On the way to Meowy’s location, Denji explained what happened to Pochita to Power, though Power scoffed at Denji’s belief that Pochita was still alive within him and argued that he was merely giving himself false hope. Reminding himself of their deal with a quick glance at Power’s bust, Denji didn’t bother arguing back.

Arriving at the spot, Power led Denji to the house the Devil was in. However, Denji noticed an inconsistency: in her story Power claimed that she needed Denji’s help because the Devil might kill Meowy if it spotted her. With her lie exposed, Power knocked out Denji and offered him as food to Meowy’s kidnapper, the Bat Devil. Bat wasted no time reinvigorating itself by drinking Denji’s blood, but recoiled in disgust over its apparent rancid taste. Restored to full power, Bat planned to fly into the nearby city to slaughter some people. Power demanded Meowy back, but as punishment for her bringing him a bad-tasting human, it ate Meowy whole as Power can only helplessly watch.

Not too long ago, Power encountered a malnourished stray cat that she decided to name Meowy. Amused by its suffering, Power planned to fatten it up so she could kill and eat it. However, Power ended up fully nursing Meowy back to health, causing the Fiend and the cat to inadvertently bond as Power found Meowy’s grateful affection intriguing. Shortly after, the Bat Devil appeared to kidnap Meowy, demanding Power find it a human to feast on in exchange for Meowy’s life.

Back in the present, Power, devastated by Meowy’s apparent death, declared that she finally empathized with Denji’s sadness over his loss of Pochita before also getting devoured by the Bat Devil. Bat began flying to the city to terrorize its population, only to discover Denji clinging onto its leg, feeding off its blood to rejuvenate himself, and screaming for Bat to return the boobies that he had been anticipating to fondle. As Bat grabbed Denji, Denji recalled when Pochita disappeared when he was a child. The incident made him fear the worst until the two reunited, much to their relief. Denji noted that he empathized with why Power did what she did to rescue Meowy… before pulling his cord, transforming, and attacking the Bat Devil until both of them crash-landed in a building. Denji yelled for a woman working there to flee before he engaged Bat, who attempted to neutralize him with a sonic scream. Denji, determined to feel some tits, fought on (including throwing a car that still had its driver inside), terrifying the Bat Devil enough for him to gain an opening and eviscerated him into a pile of flesh and guts.

Afterwards, Denji rescued Power and Meowy from the remains of the Bat Devil’s stomach. Power was incredulous when Denji revealed he rescued them due to wanting her to uphold their deal for him to touch her breasts, but ultimately agreed to pay Denji his reward. As Denji celebrated his victory however, the Leech Devil suddenly appeared and attacked. Denji, exhausted from his battle, was out of blood and thus unable to transform, leaving him atLeech’s mercy. He’s fortunately saved by the arrival of Aki, who intervened by summoning the Fox Devil to kill Leech. Aki, with his mentor Himeno, and new recruits Kobeni Higashimiya and Hirokazu Arai, coordinated cleanup and got Denji and Power medical attention.

Denji recovered from his battle in a hospital, and was reprimanded by Aki for trying to help Power. As Denji affirmed his belief that Power wasn’t so bad (very likely because of her boobies), Aki remembered civilians who came to Public Safety to give their thanks to Denji. Power, despite betraying Denji, was let off the hook, and later sent to live with Aki and Denji in their apartment by Makima. The move did not start off smoothly, as Power’s abrasive personality caused various hygienic issues that Aki and Denji were forced to contend with. As Denji unclogged the toilet, Power approached him to make good on their deal; allowing him three squeezes of her breasts as reward for his rescuing her and Meowy.

Initially ecstatic, Denji was shocked to learn that Power wore breast pads, which were promptly removed after the first squeeze. Denji completed his allotted two remaining squeezes… and was shaken to the core to discover that it was disappointing, causing him to have an existential crisis for the remainder of that night and the next morning.

Denji later helped Makima with some paperwork, still shocked by the underwhelming events of last night. After some careful wording to avoid coming off as a pervert failed to get the point across, Denji confessed to Makima that he had touched breasts for the first time in his life and was completely disappointed by the experience. Hearing this, Makima explained the importance of an intimate connection with one's partner. She began to make her point by acting intimately towards Denji, holding his hand, tracing his fingers on her lips, feeling her ears, and even gently biting one of his fingers, culminating in her going as far as allowing him to grope her breasts, shocking the extremely flustered Denji. Makima then made an odd request for him, offering anything he might want from her as a reward: she wanted him to kill the Gun Devil.

Tropes:

  • Adopt the Food: Power originally intended Meowy as food, and fed her milk from a cow to fatten her up. She ended up getting attached to another living thing for the first time.
  • An Arm and a Leg: The Leech Devil tears off and eats Denji's arm. It was recovered from her body and reattached offscreen.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption: Power obliterates the Sea Cucumber Devil as a private devil hunter who staked a claim on it is calling for backup.
  • Avenging the Villain: Right after the Bat Devil is killed, his lover the Leech Devil comes for revenge. She's strangely flippant about killing Bat's actual killer, and seems more interested in the woman and cat who happen to be nearby.
  • Bridal Carry: After Denji cuts Power and Meowy out of the Bat Devil's stomach, he tenderly hold her in his arms (and she holds Meowy in hers)... while they're covered in blood and surrounded in viscera.
  • Car Fu: The Bat Devil picks up a car and throws it at Denji with the driver still inside. Denji catches it and then throws it back—and the driver is still inside, though he survives by falling out the window on impact.
  • Cryptic Background Reference: Makima's talk with her superiors gives a hint of how devils have affected human politics.
The Soviet war-hawks are getting louder over the American matter. We're also hearing rumors that they're using devils for military purposes.
  • Diabolus ex Machina: The Leech Devil shows up without any buildup and beats Denji, requiring Aki and Kon's intervention to save him.
  • Disappointed in You: Makima gently scolds Power for acting reckless and Denji for not reigning her in. Clearly having a less benevolent view of her boss than Denji, Power is terrified for her life, seeing her "maybe you weren't cut out to be a devil hunter" comment as an Implied Death Threat.
  • Don't Celebrate Just Yet: Just as Denji celebrates his victory over the Bat Devil, and how Power will let him feel her breasts for it, the Leech Devil enters by attacking him.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Power rushes off and messily kills the first devil she smells, even though it was claimed by another devil hunter, showing both her strength and impulsiveness.
  • Fake Boobs: Denji finally gets to squeeze Power's breasts—three times in fact—but to his disappointment most of her seemingly-enormous bust is just padding. He wastes his first squeeze only touching the pads themselves.
  • Forgot About His Powers: Denji loses against the Leech Devil because he didn't have enough blood to regenerate his arm or use almost any of his Chainsaw Devil powers. It never occurs to him to drink some from the Bat Devil's intestines lying all around him.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction:
    • Denji dismisses the trouble Power is going through for a cat (as opposed to a dog) until Power promises to let him touch her breasts if he rescues Meowy. Suddenly Denji is self-righteously offended that the Bat Devil would kidnap a cat.
    • Bringing the same thing up after she moves in also makes him immediately forget his disgust at her filthy and obnoxious habits.
      She's an angel!
  • Just Eat Him: The Bat Devil eats Meowy and Power whole (even the cage the former is), letting Denji save them by cutting Bat open.
  • Kill Steal: Power kills a devil that a private devil hunter had staked out as his own. This is considered obstruction of justice, especially since the situation was a non-emergency where civilians had already been evacuated from the area.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Both out of a need to prove her usefulness and pure bloodlust, Power runs away from Denji to kill a devil on sight.
I smell blood! Fight time! Fight time! Battle time!
  • Loving Details: Makima advises Denji that "naughty things feel better the more you know your partner". She demonstrates by putting his hand on the parts of her body she says to pay attention to (like the physical qualities of her hands or the way she nibbles on his finger), and then her breast. This gets a much stronger reaction than when Denji touched Power's breast, convincing him having a girlfriend (i.e. her) would be worth the effort.
  • Ludicrous Gibs: Power's giant hammer blows the Sea Cucumber Devil into bloody pieces that cover Power, the street, and a nearby phone booth a devil hunter was using. Several people in uniform can be seen in the background cleaning the mess up.
  • Off with His Head!: Kon kills the Leech Devil by biting her head off, though she appeared to still be alive in his mouth until he swallowed her.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: Denji knowingly throws a car with an Innocent Bystander in it, openly says he does not care "about some guy's stupid life", and the driver only survives because of dumb luck. Basically murdering a random civilian for no reason is pretty far out of the moral limits he's shown on other occasions.
  • The Power of Lust: The idea of getting to touch Power's boobs keeps Denji fighting even as the Bat Devil injures him over and over.
Bat Devil: How... are you alive?
Denji: 'cuz even though I've been nothin' but patient through a whole bunch of awful crap, I still haven't touched 'em even a little!
  • Reveal Shot: One page has three vertical panels, each zoomed further out from the last. The first is Denji plunging his head chainsaw into the Leech Devil, the second is him being forced out by her tongue while revealing he only made a shallow wound, and the third is the tongue going all the way through Denji's abdomen.
  • Right Makes Might: After getting fed up at people demeaning his Quest for Sex and Mundane Luxury, Denji challenges the Leech Devil to a fight to prove the nobility of his dream. He fails miserably.
Denji: If I rip you apart, then that makes your dream worth less than touching boobs!
  • Rule of Scary: Makima justifies her interest in Denji to Aki by pointing out how devils are strengthened by their namesake's fear, and what that means for Denji's potential.
Coffee has no scary mental image whatsoever. If there was a Coffee Devil, it would probably be weak. But what if there was a Car Devil? That conjures up the mental image of getting run over and dying, so that might be strong. Denji can turn into the Chainsaw Devil. I really do think that's interesting.
  • Spotting the Thread: Denji is suspicious of Power bringing him to the Bat Devil's shack because she's not concerned about being seen and getting Meowy used as a hostage. Being a Bad Liar, Power almost immediately gives herself away and has to knock Denji out.
Power: Ooh? Was that my story?
    Denji: Story?
  • Treacherous Questgiver: Power takes Denji to save Meowy from the Bat Devil, but actually wants to trade him to Bat for Meowy's life.
  • Wanting Is Better Than Having: Denji is nigh-catatonic with disappointment over feeling Power's breast, wondering if he should aspire to anything else if it'll just turn out the same way. Makima distracts him and renews his interest by convincing him he can get a lot more satisfaction from sex if it's with someone he's close to.
Denji: I finally got ahold of this dream I'd been chasing for the longest time. But once I actually had my hands on it, it was way less life changing than I expected. And now, I'm like... when I go after different dreams in the future and get my hands on them, am I gonna realize I was actually happier during the chase then, too? Isn't that just... crap?
  • You Have Failed Me: Makima lets Denji and Power know that employing part-devils like them is an experimental program. If their results don't please the higher-ups, Division 4 will be dissolved and all the non-humans in it will be killed. Aki even says the same will happen if he lets them know what the pair were really up to with the Bat Devil.
  • You Said You Would Let Them Go: The Bat Devil promised to free Meowy if Power brought him someone whose blood he could drink. She brought him Denji, but Bat decided to eat Meowy because he doesn't like the taste of Denji's blood.
