Recap / Bowser's Koopalings S 5 E 11 Ludwig's Dilemma (1/2)

Go To

After being hidden from him for such a long time, Ludwig learns of his position as the prince of the Bohenkraut Kingdom. Being fed up of being in Bowser Jr.'s shadow for so long, he decides to go to the Bohenkraut Kingdom to find his real parents.

Tropes

  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Johan XVIII states that king Frederick IV had his step-daughters imprisoned for adultery, and the three of them were all subjected to crushing, burning, and worst of all... bible readings.
  • The Alcoholic: Lemmy and Morton seem to have liked Chuckola Cola a bit too much.
  • As You Know: Fawful tells Midbus about what happened to him following King Johann XVI's death again. Midbus even lampshades how Fawful has told him before.
  • Awful Wedded Life: King Johann describes his marriage with his first wife, his cousin Gunthilda of the Creeper Kingdom, to be this. Because of her appalling looks and poor manners (among which include chewing with her mouth open), he couldn't even stand being in the same room as her. Not helping matters is that Johann wanted to marry another woman, but his uncle and guardian refused to accept the marriage because she had been divorced twice and forced him to marry Gunthilda. As soon as his uncle died, Johann divorced Gunthilda.
  • Bilingual Bonus: The journalist that agrees to interview Fawful in an abandoned building in the middle of the night, and who is later on murdered by him and Midbus, is named Dummkopf, which is German for "idiot".
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Fawful pretends being loyal to King Johann, but he is the one who got his beloved wife killed and who is planning to murder Ludwig and everyone attending the Chuckola Cola fest.
  • Big "NO!": Morton after Bowser Jr.'s birthday cake is destroyed.
  • Call-Back:
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Travis almost says this word for word, stating that he, Ludwig, Larry, Morton, and Lemmy would have avoided being captured by border force or chosen not to run away from home, for that matter, if Ludwig had asked Bowser about his own biological family.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Fawful's company, Smiletech Industries, has been accused of underpaying, overworking and mistreating its employees.
  • Crying at Your Birthday Party: Bowser Jr. after Ludwig destroys his cake and makes it splatter all over him. Not that he didn't deserve it, though.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Birdo to Popple.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After being put up by Bowser Jr's mocking and verbal abuse for many years, Ludwig finally puts him in his place by breathing fire towards Junior, causing the cake to splatter onto Bowser Jr in the process of incinerating him and break down crying. Bowser then justifiably sends Ludwig to his room for ruining his son's special day, but Ludwig could otherwise care less about it as it was the final straw for him.
  • Doesn't Trust Those Guys: It has made abundantly clear that Larry doesn't trust Ludwig's biological father and thinks that he's not a good role model for his older brother, much to Ludwig's annoyance.
  • Driven to Suicide: King Johann XVI committed suicide one day before Bowser I claimed victory of the war against the Bohenkraut Kingdom.
  • Extra-Long Episode: At almost 49 minutes, this is one of the longest Bowser's Koopalings episodes.
  • Gonk: Gunthilda of the Creeper Kingdom. She constantly drools, she is slightly one-eyed, and chews with her mouth open.
  • Gratuitous English: Fawful speaks English ("Englandish" according to him) like this, likely because he learned it on his own.
  • Heel Realization: Ludwig gets this after Johaan XVIII calls him out for being too harsh on Larry.
  • Heir Club for Men: Female members of the royal family can't become rulers of the Bohenkraut Kingdom due to an incident involving King Klaus the sober supposedly being posioned by his step-mother so her biological son, Frederick IV could become king, which lead to him mistreating his step-daughters to death for adultery.
  • Jerkass: The Guard Borders of Stardust Field are incredibely rude and tend to mock their prisoners.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Honestly, it’s hard to blame Ludwig for calling Bowser out and wrecking Junior’s party. Even Kamek and King Boo think that Ludwig’s anger is justified.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: This is the case of The Book of Alfred In-Universe. There are only five copies in the whole world. Kamek understandably freaks out when he finds out Bowser Jr. has scribbled all over his.
  • Kissing Cousins: King Johann XVIII was forced to marry his cousin Gunthilda by his uncle. As soon as his uncle died however, he divorced her and married his true love.
  • Life Drain: Fawful is using the Green Star to power up his life-draining weapons and keep his immortality.
  • Make a Wish: Bowser Jr. lights his birthday candles and makes a wish. Shortly afterwards Larry reads on his phone that there has just been a huge explosion at Disneyworld.
Bowser Jr.: Yes, what a shame.
  • Missing Mom: Turns out that Sophia Eisenhower, Ludwig's biological mother, was murdered on her way back from the Koopa Kingdom while Ludwig was just an egg.
  • Oh, Crap!: Bowser Jr. after Ludwig breathes fire in his direction.
  • Parental Marriage Veto: Because Sophia had been divorced twice, Johann's uncle and legal guardian wouldn't let him marry her and instead had him marry his cousin Gunthilda, whom he was very unhappy. As soon as his uncle died however, Johann divorced Gunthilda and married Sophia.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Fawful is 119 years old. The healing powers of the Green Star are what have been keeping him alive for so long... by draining others of their vitality and giving it to Fawful.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Ludwig gives a strong, yet rude one to Larry for being too hard on his real dad whilst making the latter cry.
  • Shout-Out: The flashback in which king Johann XVI freaks out and rants at his kingdom's army after learning that they lost the battle in Sirena Beach is a reference to the scene in Downfall (2004) in which Adolf Hitler snaps upon hearing that there are no reinforcements to be mobilized to aid Berlin.
  • Take That!: Travis tells Popple that he's more illiterate than the comments on Family Guy compillation videos.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Did that journalist really not see anything strange in the fact that Fawful had chosen an abandoned university as the place for an interview, in the middle of the night nontheless?
  • Trash Talk: Bowser Jr. to Ludwig after he openly expresses his disgust about Junior being a legitimate heir. It ends with Ludwig breathing fire at his cake and ruining his apparel.
