Recap / Bob's Burgers S5E9 "Speakeasy Rider"

Go To

Louise and Tina become competing go-kart racers, while Gene gets into flag waving, and Bob illegally sells Teddy's home-brewed beer.

Speakeasy Tropes:

  • The Alleged Car: The ramshackle ex-bumper car does not make a great go-kart. Naturally, the day of the grand prix it craps out entirely.
  • Bad Liar: Bob and Linda's cover-up for their homebrew operation is very poor. The only reason Hugo doesn't nail them on it is because his supervisor finally told him to stop harassing Bob or else he'll be fired.
  • Bond One-Liner: After Tina spins out Bryce and effectively knocks him out of the race, she remarks, "So long, Bryce. I kart-ly knew you."
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • Critter and Mudflap from "Ear-sy Rider" return to remake the Belchers' bumper car into something more go-kart friendly. They also allude to the fact that their son Sidecar was born in the Belchers' restaurant, which was depicted in the aforementioned episode.
    • Bryce, the main antagonist of "Full Bars", returns as the main antagonist of this episode.
  • Comically Missing the Point: A racing game Gene plays always begins (and ends) with him intentionally running the motorcycle into the wall. Tina tells him the point of a racing game is to not crash into the wall. Gene disagrees with her.
  • Comically Small Bribe: It takes the kids just three dollars to buy a bumper car from Mr. Fischoeder. Fischoeder even offers to throw in a second bumper car and one of his employees for five more dollars.
  • Continuity Nod: Louise mentions Tina's attempt at driving in the parking lot as evidence why she shouldn't drive the go-kart.
  • Crowd Chant: Linda attempts this for the girls at the end by chanting "Bel-Chers!". Nobody picks this up so she drops it.
  • Crying Wolf: When Hugo tries to investigate the bootlegging at the restaurant, his supervisor believes he's just making up another excuse to harass Bob and threatens to fire Hugo if he doesn't back off.
  • Determinator: After Tina defects to the Kingshead Island Speeders, Louise manages to improve her driving skills to get first place in the B-league season just so she can have a chance to beat Tina in the Grand Prix race on Kingshead Island.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: When Louise's car breaks down near the finish line, Tina is tempted to just leave her there. She then remembers that the Belchers initially started go-kart racing as a team, so she uses the KIS kart to push Louise over the finish line so they can win together as a team. At the same time, Louise admits that Tina is a much better driver than her, leading the sisters to reconcile and share the trophy.
  • Irony: The one time Bob is actually doing something that will get the restaurant shut down, Hugo is unable to prove it before his supervisor threatens to fire him for continually harassing Bob.
  • It's All About Me: Louise insists on being team driver even when it turns out Tina is clearly better than her. This is why Tina defects to the Kingshead Island Speeders.
  • Jerkass: Why does Hugo believe something illegal is happening at Bob's Burgers? Not because of any actual evidence, but because the restaurant actually has customers.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: For once, Hugo has a point in wanting to shut Bob down, since Bob selling homebrew beer is illegal. However, his petty and dickish attitude throughout the investigation still makes Bob the more sympathetic of the two.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: Despite normally going unpunished for his shenanigans, this time Hugo is threatened by his boss to stop harassing Bob or else he'll be fired.
  • Oh, Crap!: Bob and Linda initially celebrate the fact that both Tina and Louise are out in front... and then they realize that this means one of them is going to beat the other, which will only exacerbate their rivalry.
Linda: Dibs on not handling it!
  • Passing the Torch: Gus allows Gene to lead the flag-waving for the King's Head Island Grand Prix. However, Gus claims it's only for one race while Gene rather aggressively claims otherwise.
  • Passive-Aggressive Kombat: After Tina defects to the Kingshead Island Speedsters to be their driver, she and Louise end up doing this during dinner that night.
Louise: Tina, can you pass me a napkin? And try not to betray it.
Tina: Louise, please pass the pepper. And try not to crash it into the salt.
  • Pet the Dog: It's very minor, but Hugo begrudgingly admits the sausage Bob cooked for him is good.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: For the second time in the series, it's a Shout-Out to Easy Rider.
  • Reading the Stage Directions Out Loud:
    Customer: Another beer, please? Wink.
    [later]
  • Sleep Cute: The last scene of the episode shows Louise and Tina sharing the latter's bed, sleeping with the go-kart trophy between them.
  • Status Quo Is God: Although Teddy's homebrew is highly successful, Bob and Linda agree that they can't continue selling it or else they'll likely get caught and shut down. Especially because they know the only reason why Hugo didn't bust them for the bootlegging is because his supervisor believed his investigation was another excuse to harass Bob.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Bryce laughs at the mere thought of even being in the same league as the Belchers. Sure enough, by the end of the episode he eats his words.
  • Your Mom: After mocking the Belchers' lack of driving knowledge, Bryce makes one of these comments as he walks off.
  • You Talk Too Much!: Sasha is weirded out by Tina continually talking to herself/the kart during each race, and eventually just stops listening for a while.
