Recap / Bob's Burgers S2E8 "Bad Tina"

Go To

Tina befriends a new girl in school, Tammy, who convinces her to become more rebellious.

Tropes:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Linda is furious and sends Tina to her room when she tells her not to have a "Crap-Attack"... prompting the rest of the family to ponder what a crap-attack even is, laughing at how ridiculous the term is, and start ribbing Linda about it. Bob keeps using it on her in amusement for the rest of the episode, and Louise in particular reacts as if she's hearing it for the first time every time Bob says it.
  • The Alcoholic: Linda drank quite a bit during the Cake intermission (under the excuse that if they didn't want her pounding drinks they'd give her more than ten minutes to drink them), then comes home wanting more alcohol. She gets defensive when this is pointed out.
  • All for Nothing: The effort Louise and Gene put into stealing back Tina's friend-fiction from Tammy is for naught when Tina reads her own friend-fiction to the school in Tammy's place.
  • All Women Are Lustful: Tina, who loves erotic friend-fiction and Tammy who has a crush on Zeke.
  • Bait-and-Switch: As Linda laments the fact that Tina appears to be growing up, Louise tells Linda to focus on her good daughter... Gene.
    Gene: I'm pretty!
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Tammy pretends to be Tina's friend, but corrupts her into cutting class and causing trouble. When Tina wants to stop, Tammy blackmails her into continuing.
  • Blackmail:
    • Tammy uses Tina's erotic friend-fiction to force Tina to cut class and accompany her in her adventures.
    • Louise and Gene use this to make Tina do their chores after they find out that Tina took their mother's Margarita Mix.
  • Bland-Name Product: Cake is an obvious take-off on Stomp.
  • Brick Joke: When Tina shows Tammy around Wagstaff, she points out that the menu misspells "brownie" as "browie". When Louise swaps out Tammy's backpack for Andy's, Gene remarks that he's going back to the cafeteria to get another "browie".
  • Chekhov's Gag: Tammy farts in Tina's room after laughing at her friend-fiction. When Tina reads her friend-fiction out loud to the school, Tammy laughs and farts again—and Louise and Gene use it to get the attention of the students away from Tina and onto Tammy.
  • Cosmetic Catastrophe: Tammy and Tina's "makeover". The Pesto twins mistake them for clowns.
  • Cringe Comedy: Tina reading her erotic friend-fiction out loud in front of the entire school.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Linda doesn't realize until Bob points it out to her that Tina reading her erotic friend-fiction to school to avoid Tammy's blackmail is a horrible idea.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Tammy blackmails Tina into acting out by threatening to give Jimmy, Jr. Tina's erotic friend-fiction that Tina wrote about him. When Tina fails to show up for a double date and ruins Tammy's chances with Zeke (since Tina got grounded for trying to sneak out of the house with Linda's margarita mix, using the family's emergency phone to text Tammy and calling Linda a boob punch), Tammy decides she'll just read it to the entire school.
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: Tammy has brown hair and different colored lips in this episode. It's established in later episodes that she dyed her hair blond. Her nose is also bigger than in later episodes, but then it wouldn't be out of character for Tammy to get a nose job.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Tammy's crush on Zeke, which is a prominent part of this episode, is never shown again—in fact, later episodes show Tammy to be somewhat repulsed by Zeke.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Gene and Louise are happy to blackmail Tina when they think she's just acting out. When they eventually learn that Tammy is behind the whole mess and is herself blackmailing Tina, they want to help her get revenge.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Linda only realizes how bad an idea Tina reading her erotic friend-fiction in front of the student body is when she finishes explaining it to Bob.
  • Fake High: Tina and Tammy drink Linda's margarita mix. They think they're getting drunk, but the mix is non-alcoholic; Louise points out that Linda uses it to fill the hummingbird feeder.
  • The Freelance Shame Squad: All the students in the cafeteria laugh at Tina's bizarre "erotic friend-fiction". Fortunately for Tina, they're quickly distracted by Tammy's flatulence, and Gene and Louise use the situation to get everybody to start making fun of her instead.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: By pausing, you can see which media Tina writes fanfiction of, it includes: The Simpsons, Twilight, Bones, Garfield, The Lord of the Rings and many, many more.
  • Gasshole: Tammy gets her comeuppance when she farts loudly in front of the entire school.
  • Groin Attack: Discussed; Zeke asks the tattoo artist/piercer working at the mall if he does piercings for scrotums.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Tina reveals her love for erotic fanfiction in this episode, which becomes a Running Gag on the show.
    • Mr. Frond is a fan of Cake like Bob is, and at the end of the episode the two bond over doing the routine together.
  • Hypocritical Heartwarming: When Gene and Louise find out that Tammy is blackmailing Tina, they decide to get even, even though they themselves were blackmailing her as well.
Gene: No one blackmails our sister but us!
Louise: Yeah! Messing with Tina is a privilege, not a right!
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • When Tina's hangouts with Tammy force Gene and Louise to her chores, Gene complains that he's tired of being hurt by Tina... even though he and Louise blackmailed Tina into doing their chores and continue to do so in the next few scenes.
    • Tina remarks that nothing is more embarrassing than having her parents show up at school... maybe a minute after she read her erotic friend-fiction out loud to the entire cafeteria and they laughed at her.
  • I Do Not Like Green Eggs and Ham: Bob is at first skeptical about going to a patty cake stage show, but after watching it, he becomes obsessed with it.
  • Kick the Dog: Tina gets on the receiving end of this twice: her siblings blackmail her into doing their chores and Tammy blackmails her into repeatedly doing crazy things with her.
  • Mistaken for Thief: When Tina shatters the bottle of margarita mix on the ground, Bob and Linda are shown exiting their room armed with weapons (specifically a baseball bat and hairdryer), suggesting they took the noise Tina was making to mean a robber had broken in.
  • Narm: In-universe, Tina's erotic fan fiction comes off to Tammy as hilarious rather than sexy.
  • Not So Above It All: Bob tells Linda not to have a crap attack, after which he, Louise, and Gene point at each other and laugh like there's an inside joke between them. He then repeats it again when he and Linda are about to go to Cake.
  • Pet the Dog: Although he initially joins on the chorus of laughter, Jimmy Jr. later admits to Tina that he thought her friend-fiction was cool. Regardless of if it was genuine or if he was just saying it to be nice, the fact remains that he didn't have to say it at all.
  • Playing Sick: Tina tries to do this after Tammy decides to read her friend-fiction to the school... with a meat thermometer.
Linda: It says you're done if you're a pork loin.
Louise: Meat thermometer? What, are you new here?
  • Real-Person Fic: Tina's erotic "friend-fiction" differs from her fanfiction by focusing on the people in her life instead.
  • Recursive Canon: One of Tina's notebooks contains fanfiction of The Simpsons, where characters from Bob's Burgers have cameoed quite a few times. Technically speaking, this means that Bob's Burgers exists as a show within the Bob's Burgers universe.
  • Shipper on Deck: Buttloose implies that Tina ships Mr. Frond and Ms. Jacobson, leading to an awkward interaction between the two when they meet up while Tina reads that part out loud.
  • Ship Tease: There's some between Tina and Jimmy Jr., as well as between Tammy and Zeke.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Tina has already written erotic fanfiction of all media she knows. It's possible to see which ones by pausing the episode when the books are being shown.
    • The fanfiction in which Tina is running around the cafeteria touching people's butts resembles the Apple Mac 1984 Super Bowl ad, and is named Buttloose.
    • A movie theater is showing Neverending Gory.
  • Tastes Like Purple: Gene says of Tammy's fart that "my ears can smell it!"
  • Technologically Blind Elders: Linda doesn't understand Tammy saying "Your 3 is grass" ("Your ass is grass"), and Bob has to translate it.
    Linda: It's not funny.
Bob: I didn't say it was funny. I just said I figured it out.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Through Tammy's influence, the normally-docile Tina starts acting up by causing trouble in school and sassing her family.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: Pretty much all of Tina's negative actions throughout the episode can be attributed to Tammy.
  • Uncanny Valley Make Up: When Tammy gives Tina a "makeover", she puts so much make-up on Tina that the Pesto twins mistake the girls for "bathroom clowns".
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Tina has the gall to say that her parents being at school is the most embarrassing thing that can happen, even though they went there to try and prevent her from humiliating herself.
  • Unusual Euphemism: Upon noticing Tina's temporary dinosaur tattoo, Gene refers to her butt as a "tar pit".
  • "Walk on the Wild Side" Episode: Tina starts behaving wilder because of Tammy's influence, but ends as a subversion as Tammy keeps Tina on the wild side by blackmailing her.
  • You Are Grounded!: Bob grounds Tina for trying to sneak out and meet Tammy.
