The natural terrors of the dentist.
Hurty Tooth

Cricket tries to avoid the dentist when he gets a bad, aching tooth, while Tilly dreams of meeting the Tooth Fairy and Bill tries to solve a puzzle in a kids' magazine.

"Hurty Tooth" contains examples of:

  • Actor Allusion: Dr. Enamel utters Fozzie Bear's famous catchphrase, "Wocka Wocka!"
  • Agony of the Feet: After Hurty Tooth is removed, Cricket then casually mentions that he's apparently had a similar pain-ignoring situation with a screw that's been stuck in his bare feet for 2 months, showing the underside to his family, to their visceral disgust and horror at the sight.
  • Animation Bump:
    • When Gramma removes her dentures, her mouth is noticeably sagging, something Season 1 didn't even have the technique to animate back in "Gramma's Licence".
    • Some of Cricket's expressions, specifically when he curves his lips inward and slams his mouth shut when Dr. Enamel sees Hurty Tooth, mark a step in animation development for facial movements. The same goes when the screen vibrates the second time Cricket feels mouth pain when in the hallway.
  • Beyond the Impossible: How the heck did Dr. Enamel pull Hurty Tooth out while Cricket was making that Rousing Speech...?!
  • Cutting Back to Reality: After Tilly grabs Cricket's Hurty Tooth, we cut back to her hallucination where she gives it to the Tooth Fairy. As she begins to say something special, we snap right back to reality where she's dozily talking to a poster of the Tooth Fairy in Cricket's room.
  • The Dentist Episode: The episode revolves around the Greens going to the dentist where Cricket tries to protect his aching tooth from being pulled, Tilly dreaming where she meets the tooth fairy, and Bill trying to solve a spot-the-difference puzzle in the waiting room.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Cricket saying all he had to do was "look at the big picture" is what inspires Bill to study the spot-the-difference in a different way by looking at the whole scene instead of up close, allowing him to finally see the difference.
  • Face Your Fears: Cricket does this in the end.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Bill spends the episode becoming increasingly obsessed with a Spot the Difference puzzle in a children's magazine, finding the two images of a woman walking her dog in the park identical. It's only at the end when Cricket mentions the bigger picture that Bill realizes he should look at the rest of the images. He finally realizes that the difference is a Notzilla fighting a Humongous Mecha in the background of the city, which takes up half the picture.
  • Here We Go Again!: After his tooth is taken out, Cricket then casually mentions the screw stuck in his foot. As with the tooth, the screw is not shown, but everyone reacts with horror, and Bill asks to call the doctor.
  • Meaningful Name: The dentist is called Dr. Enamel. He even points it out himself.
  • Mouthscreen: As Cricket prepares to have his tooth removed, the camera pans down to his mouth as he opens it.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Cricket's reaction when Bill schedules a visit to the dentist and when Dr. Enamel tries to pull his tooth out. He later gets an even bigger one when Gramma reveals the consequences of not removing it and shows him her dentures as proof.
    • Bill and Dr. Enamel's reactions when they first witness Hurty Tooth.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Dr. Enamel somehow manages to pull Cricket's tooth out at an unseen time as Cricket is giving his Rousing Speech about the lesson he learned.
  • Overly Long Gag: Bill struggling to solve the difference in that children's magazine.
  • Rapid-Fire "No!": Bill and Doctor Enamel's reactions to seeing Hurty Tooth.
  • Rousing Speech: Cricket gives one to Dr. Enamel as he announces he's learned his lesson and no longer fears the dentist, and prepares to have his tooth removed. Surprisingly, the tooth was pulled out sometime during it.
  • Shout-Out: Highbrights is obviously this world's equivalent of Highlights.
  • Special Guest: Fozzie Bear (i.e. Eric Jacobson) as Dr. Enamel.
  • Take Our Word for It: When Bill and Doctor Enamel see Cricket's Hurty Tooth, all shots completely avoid showing the tooth when they react to such, and it isn't until the tooth is removed that we finally see it.
  • Third Line, Some Waiting: The main story has Cricket avoiding the dentist and Tilly dreaming she meets the tooth fairy. The minor portion has Bill trying to solve a puzzle in a children's magazine.
  • Title Drop: Several times, mostly by Cricket.
  • Tooth Fairy: Tilly's side of the story has her hallucinate the tooth fairy and try to get a tooth for him.
  • Voice Actors: While Fozzie Bear is credited for the voice of the dentist, Dr. Enamel, it was actually his performer, Eric Jacobson, who voiced him. As a fun nod in the credits, he was credited as "Fozzie Bear's personal handyman".
  • Wham Line: Cricket discovers from Gramma that avoiding the dentist results in bad consequences:
Cricket: Hey Gramma, Hurty Tooth'll stop hurting eventually, right?
Gramma: Oh, nooo. It'll hurt more and more. But you'll get used to it.
Cricket: What?! You mean this never stops?!
Gramma: Not until all your teeth fall out.
    Cricket: How long'll that take?
Gramma: Don't you worry, just keep avoiding the dentist, and that day will come before you know it! Why, I was practically your age when I got my first pair of dentures! (takes out her dentures) Nuffin' oo ee afwaid of!

And that was only step nĂºmero uno in their quest to form a psychic link.
Sleepover Sisters

Tilly and Andromeda have a sleepover where they attempt to develop psychic powers, much to the annoyance of a tired Cricket.

"Sleepover Sisters" contains examples of:

  • Big "NO!": Andromeda screams one after realizing she and Tilly fell asleep, followed by another upon finding out they didn't develop their psychic link.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Tilly and Andromeda fail to stay awake, but one look at the pictures they took has them realize they had lots of fun and are truly even closer friends than before.
  • Counting Sheep: One of Cricket's attempts to get to sleep. Unfortunately, the Greens only have one sheep.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Tilly and Andromeda eat candy to give themselves enough energy to stay away all night. It works for about 10 seconds, but the sugar quickly makes them tired. Tilly even points out that they forgot about the "sugar crash".
  • Fan Disservice: Bill sleeps without a shirt and sweats.
  • Imagine Spot: Tilly and Andromeda imagine themselves in a fancy restaurant having developed a psychic link and using their abilities to read each other's minds.
  • Irony:
    • In spite of Tilly and Andromeda attempting to stay awake, Cricket cannot sleep without Tilly's snoring.
    • In addition, Cricket says, "Good luck sleeping through Tilly's crazy loud snoring!", when it's discovered soon after he can't sleep himself without the snore.
  • Kids Shouldn't Watch Horror Films: As a "nuclear option", Andromeda puts a scary movie on the DVD player, thinking it will make them too scared to sleep. It works, but it also makes them so jumpy that when Cricket breaks in, they think he's the monster from the movie and attack him.
  • Open the Iris: Seen on Tilly and Andromeda when they wolf down large amounts of candy which gives them sugar rush.
  • Psychic Link: Tilly and Andromeda attempt to develop one by staying awake all night.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Cricket's eyes turn blood red as a result of being unable to sleep without Tilly's snore.
  • Series Continuity Error:
    • In this episode, Cricket can't sleep without Tilly's snoring, but in "Homeshare Hoedown" he can't sleep due to sleeping on a mattress instead of a hammock.
    • The Greens have only one sheep here, but in "Blood Moon" there was more than one sheep.
  • Sleep Deprivation: Tilly and Andromeda try to stay awake all night on purpose, thinking it will give them psychic powers. Cricket, on the other hand, can't fall asleep without Tilly's snoring.
  • Slumber Party: What Tilly and Andromeda have for the episode.
  • Something Only They Would Say: To prove he isn't a monster, Cricket tells Tilly stuff about her in his own words.
  • Spectacular Spinning: Cricket can't help spinning around in the beginning. Late that night, it's revealed he spun around for three hours.
  • Wingding Eyes: When Cricket finally stops spinning after three straight hours, his eyes briefly have little spirals in them.
