Portmanteau Couple Name / Anime & Manga

• Assault Lily: Bouquet exploits this by naming its two leads Yuyu and Riri. Characters In-Universe start referring to them as "Yuri". Eventually Riri gives a character that name.
• Attack on Titan has many, including Ereri (Eren/Levi), Eruri (Erwin/Levi), Eremin (Eren/Armin), Eremika (Eren/Mikasa), Jearmin (Jean/Armin), Reibert (Reiner/Bertolt), Yumikuri (Ymir/Krista)... the list goes on.
• Azumanga Daioh gives us SakaKaorin (Sakaki/Kaorin), Sakura (Sakaki/Kagura), NYukari (Nyamo/Yukari), ToYomi (Tomo/Yomi), and the slightly less common ChiSaka (Chiyo-chan/Osaka).
• An In-Universe example in B Gata H Kei: When Miss Aika volunteers Kosuda and Yamada to plan out the activities for the school's Field Day, she asks if she should just call them Kosada instead.
• Bakuten Shoot Beyblade had a fair few of these back when the Slash Fic-ers were at their most active: Tyson and Kai = Tyka, Max and Rei = Marei, etc.
• Bleach:
  • There's quite a lot like IchiRuki (Ichigo/Rukia), IchiHime (Ichigo/Orihime), HitsuHina (Hitsugaya/Hinamori), HitsuMatsu (Hitsugaya/Matsuomoto), UraYoru (Urahara/Yoruichi), and KenUno (Kenpachi/Unohana).
  • UlquiHime (Ulquiorra/Orihime). There's also GrimmHime (Grimmjow/Orihime) as well.
  • Not to mention Ishigo and Ichida for Ichigo/Ishida. It usually goes by the code name IchiIshi, though.
  • Renji/Rukia has been sometimes referred to as Renkia, but more often RenRuki.
  • Shuhei/Rangiku, depending on who you ask, is referred to as Shu(u)Ran.
• Case Closed:
  • Loads and loads of pairings, and hence loads and loads of this. The most well known are ShinRan (Shinichi/Ran) and AiCon (Ai/Conan), but Portmanteau Couple names are usually applied to much more obscure pairings as well.
  • The two of the most popular DCMK yaoi pairings are KaiShin (Kaito/Shinichi) and HakuKai (Hakuba/Kaito).
  • Conan/Ai is also seldom referred to as Coai and Kid/Conan as K-Co (Kコ).
• Code Geass:
  • Kalulu for Lelouch/Kallen, CluClu for Lelouch/C.C., SuzaLulu for Suzaku/Lelouch, Suzaku/Euphemia for SuzaEuphie, and ShirLulu for Lelouch/Shirley.
• D.Gray-Man fandom uses Allena (Allen/Lenalee), LaviYuu (Lavi/Kanda), Yullen (Allen/Kanda), KanLina (Kanda/Lenalee) and sometimes Laven (Lavi/Allen).
• Death Note:
  • There is one for the threesome of Mello/Near/Matt, which has on occasion been called MNM (pronounced Em-In-Em. Like the rapper.)
  • For other Mello pairings, there's Might for Mello/Light and MellodraMATTic for Mello/Matt.
  • The LxLight pairing is sometimes referred to as "Lawlight."
  • Japanese fandom has "Teruzuki" for Mikami/Light. It's a combination of "Teru" and "Tsuki" (the kanji spelling of Light's name). It was also named after a Japanese Battleship in WWII.
  • The Light/Near rarepair is sometimes referred to as "Moonriver." In Japanese, Light's name is written with the kanji for "moon," and Near's real name is Nate River.
• Delicious in Dungeon has Farcille for Falin/Marcille.
• The Descendants of Darkness fandom uses TsuSoka (Tsuzuki / Hisoka) and TaTari (Tatsumi / Watari), among others.
• Digimon:
  • The English fandom has rules for naming pairings. Even if you otherwise use English names, you always use the Japanese names while doing it American style, and switching around who goes first just doesn't fly. For example, Sora and Matt are always Sorato, based on Matt’s original name Yamato, never Soratt or Mora as you'd see in some other fandom: nobody would know who you were talking about if you used those names, even if you used American terminology all the way outside naming the pairing. However, to demand that it be done full-on Japanese-style (which would likely make it Yamasora; male name goes first, first part of names is used, and "Sorato" can't actually be written with the Japanese characters that make up their names.) is seen as being a bit too far into Serious Business/weeaboo territory.
  • Canon examples of the above include include Sorato (Sora/Yamato (Matt)), Kenyako (Ken/Miyako (Yolei)), and Jurato (Juri (Jeri)/Takato). Non-canon examples would take up three pages of tiny text, and that's before you start on the Digimon themselves.
• Dragon Ball has several of these; it helps that Portmanteau names are canon when characters merge via Fusion Dance, so it's an easy jump for the fandom. The most popular names are probably Truten (Trunks/Goten; compare to their Fusion Dance form of Gotenks) and Truhan (Future Trunks/Gohan). In light of Android 18's original name, Lazulin or Krilzuli could be suggested.
  • KakaVege is used for Goku (aka Kakarot)/Vegeta, while VegeBul is Vegeta/Bulma. Additionally Goku and Chi-Chi have GoChi.
• Durarara!! fandom's favorite pairing is Shizaya, short for Shizuo/Izaya.
• Fairy Tail fans tend to use NaLu for Natsu/Lucy, Gruvia for Gray/Juvia, Jelza/Jerza for Jellal/Erza, LoLu for Loke/Lucy, and Zervis for Zeref/Mavis.
• Free! fandom has several of them:
  • MakoHaru (Makoto/Haruka) and RinHaru (Rin/Haruka) are among the most prominent.
  • RinTori (Rin/Nitori) and ReiGisa (Rei/Nagisa) are also pretty common in the fandom.
  • As of the second season, there is now also SouRin (Sousuke/Rin) and MomoTori (Momotarou/Nitori).
• Fruits Basket fandom brings us Yukiru (Yuki/Tohru), Kyoru (Kyou/Tohru), and AkiGure or GureAki (Akito/Shigure), amongst others.
• Fullmetal Alchemist:
  • The pairing of Roy Mustang and Riza Hawkeye is referred to as Royai, pronounced Roy-Eye. Edward/Winry is often referred to as EdWin, Alphonse/Mei Chan as AruMei or AlMei, Alphonse/Winry as AlWin, and Roy/Edward as RoyEd. Ed and Envy, though not nearly as popular a pairing as the other examples, are Edvy. Ling Yao and Lan Fan become LingFan (LinRan in Japan). And then there's Elricest. For fans of Fullmetal Alchemist (2003), Edrose (or "Edroze") is Edward and Rose.
  • There's also the unromantic, in-universe, literal coupling of GreedLing for Greed possessing Ling Yao's body.
• Fushigi Yuugi has the couples MiTama (Miaka/Tamahome), MiHoto (Miaka/Hotohori), MiTas (Miaka/Tasuki), TasChi (Tasuki/Chichiri), among others.
• Gabriel Dropout: Gavusata for Gabriel/Satania and Ga-vine for Gabriel/Vignette.
• Genshiken:
  • Genshiken gives us the generic — and therefore quite useful — "otupple" (otaku + couple).
  • In-universe example: Ogiue, in the Necktie Leash episode, begins thinking about the details of "Sasa-Mada", in her own words.
• Get Backers' main Ho Yay pairing is known as Bangin (Ban/Ginji) in Japanese fandom and amusingly enough, it is even used in some official materials. In the GBA game Jagan Fuuin for example, bangin is a gameplay item that increases said duo's compatibility.
• Gundam Build Fighters Try's shipped couples, thanks to the active Ship-to-Ship Combat that went on over at Reddit, gained the following names: HMS SekaFuu and HMS SeGyanko, for the Sekai/Fumina and Sekai/Kaouruko pairings, respectively, which was later joined by (as of Episode 24) HMS SakaiFuu (Sakai/Fumina) (thanks to the episode 8 Dream Sequence, no less), HMS SekaShia (Sekai/Shia) and HMS ShiGyanko (Shimon/Gyanko).
• Haruhi Suzumiya has Yukyon/Kyuki (Yuki/Kyon), Mikyon (Mikuru/Kyon), Harukyon (Haruhi/Kyon), Itsukyon/Kyonzumi (Itsumi Koizumi/Kyon), Itsuru (Itsumi/Mikuru), Yukitsu (Yuki/Itsumi), Tsuruguchi (Tsuruya/Taniguchi), and Kimikida (Emiri Kimidori/Kunikida) for some examples. Kinda easy to make shipping names out of their names.
• Hetalia: Axis Powers:
  • "Joker", which at first seems to be Idiosyncratic Ship Naming for America / England, but is really a portmanteau of their human last names Jones/Kirkland (makes more sense if you try to pronounce it like the Japanese), although the majority of English-speaking America/England fans simply use US/UK.
  • More common and obvious examples are: GerIta (Germany/Italy), SuFin (Sweden/Finland), AusHun (Austria/Hungary), Spamano (Spain/Romano), PoLiet or LietPol (Poland/Lithuania - "Liet" is Poland's nickname for Lithuania), Franada (France/Canada), PruCan (Prussia/Canada), FrUK (France/England - and yes, it arose mainly from the potential for loads of 'what the FrUK'-ery), RusAme (Russia/America), DenNor (Denmark/Norway), Ameripan (America/Japan), and that's just scratching the surface.
  • Some less common pairings have cool/funny-sounding portmanteau names: Korea/Hong Kong shippers have the catchy term of KoHo, Denmark/Sweden shippers affectionately dub their pairing DeSu, and Turkey/Japan shippers (yes, they exist) have the obvious choice of Turpan but one of them on DeviantArt has come up with the alternative name of Jerkey.
  • There are also some portmanteaus based on the Japanese names for the countries/characters: Giripan (Greece/Japan - the all-Japanese portmanteau would actually be "Girihon", but "Giripan" was the one that caught on with the English fandom), RoChu (Russia/China), NiChu (Japan/China), Niwan (Japan/Taiwan), AsaKiku (England/Japan, based off the Japanese pronounciation of England's human name 'Arthur' and Japan's human name 'Kiku').
  • One case worth mentioning on its own is Belarus/Russia. If you take the common view that Belarus tops Russia, the most obvious portmanteau of their names would be... BelaRus. Brings a whole new meaning to Belarus wanting her brother to become one with her, doesn't it? Then again, her name literally means "White Russia", so...
• Jojos Bizarre Adventure has a lot for a fandom with a lot of shipping:
  • Part 1 has JonaDio for Dio/Jonathan, ZeppWagon for Zeppeli/Speedwagon, JonaEri for Jonathan/Erina, and JonaWagon for Jonathan/Speedwagon.
  • Part 2 has CaeJose for Joseph/Caesar.
  • Part 3 has JotaKak (JoKa for Japanese speakers) for Jotaro/Kakyoin and PolDul/AvPol for Polnareff/Abdul.
  • Part 4 has Josuyasu for Josuke/Okuyasu and JosuHan for Josuke/Rohan. There's also KiraShino for Kira/Shinobu.
  • Part 5 has GioMis for Giorno/Mista, BruAbba for Abbacchio/Buccellati, FugoNara for Fugo/Narancia (Japanese fans use FuNara instead), and Sorgel or Sorlato for Sorbet/Gelato.
  • Part 6 has Jolymes for Jolyne/Hermes.
  • Part 7 has GyJo for Gyro/Johnny.
  • Part 8 has Josuho for Josuke/Yasuho.
• K
  • The top 3 of frenemy Clans Scepter 4 and HOMRA are MikoRei (Mikoto/Reisi), IzuSeri (Izumo/Seri), and SaruMei (Saruhiko/Misaki).
  • Other pairings, such as Tatara Totsuka/pretty much every HOMRA member, also get this treatment. The central pair of the first season, Kuroh and Shiro, are referred to as KurohShiro, but it's only different as a portmanteau in Japanese - it tends to be written in Katakana, not kanji^note  "Shiro" is short for Yashiro, which is written with one kanji in his case (社), so to be shortened to "Shiro", it must be written with kana. Kuroh's name is styled to match in the ship name.
• In the English Kaguya-sama: Love Is War fandom, the two primary Ishigami ships are Ishibame (Ishigami and Tsubame) and Ishiino/Ishimiko (Ishigami and Iino). The former is also known as Ishitsuba among the Japanese fandom and would later be used in canon during the shipping war chapter.
• The Kobato. fandom has Fujibato (Fujimoto/Kobato).
• The K-On! fandom refers to the Mio and Ritsu pair as Mitsu. YuiAzu is also used to refer to Yui/Azusa, and it's even canon, as they used that name for a guitar duet they performed.
• Kyo Kara Maoh!:
  • There is the Boys' Love example of Yuuram, after the main character (Yuuri) and his unpredictable, enthusiastic fiancée (Wolfram). This name actually gets featured in-universe with Greta naming one of her pets Yuuram, after the two daddies who adopted her, as well as it being the title of an episode.
  • The main rival to this pairing is referred to as ConYuu (Conrad/Yuuri). There's also ConWolf (Conrad / Wolfram but let's not go there.
• Love Live!: NicoMaki for Nico/Maki, NozoEli for Nozomi/Eli, RinPana^note due to a Japanese pronunciation phenomenon known as rendaku, although some fans still call it "RinHana" for Rin/Hanayo, and HonoEli for Honoka/Eli.
• Lucky Star:
  • Konami — Konata/Kagami. You can't censor their love. And yes, plenty of fanfiction have them using the Konami Code in some fairly "creative" ways with each other; whether it's getting the reference or just letting out Konata's Gamer Chick side varies by the author.
  • Minami/Yutaka = Mintaka. Also adds to gamer cred as it's likely more writers would know the name from the theme naming in Baten Kaitos than from actual astronomy.
  • Another growing one is Tsuyuki aka Tsukasa/Miyuki.
• Lyrical Nanoha:
  • NanoFei — Nanoha/Fate. For those wondering, Fate is transcribed as Feito in Japanese (also spelled NanoFate).
  • For the other side of the shipping war, YuuNoha (Yuuno/Nanoha).
  • There is also YuunoFei/YuunoFate for Yuuno and Fate.
  • Also, ViviEin for Vivio/Einhart. Subaru/Teana is trickier: SuAna or SubaTea.
  • Zarf, for the canine familiar duo (Arf and Zafira).
• Moriarty the Patriot: The dominant ship is "Sherliam": Sherlock/William, and of course, as a Sherlock Holmes adaptation, it also uses "Johnlock" for John Watson and Sherlock Holmes. It's also common to see "Bondliam" (Bond/William) and Myc Al or Albercroft (Mycroft and Albert).
• Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny have several examples. Asukira (Athrun/Kira), Asucaga (Athrun/Cagalli), and Asumey (Athrun/Meyrin) are probably the most well known.
• My Hi ME:
  • ShizNat (Shizuru / Natsuki) pops up a lot in My-Otome/My Hi ME fandom, as it's far and away the most popular pairing. "Harukino" (Haruka/Yukino) and "Maikoto" (Mai/Mikoto) also show up every now and then.
  • One term coined by members of the Mai Universe forum is "Haruzuke" for Haruka/Shizuru. The "-zuke" is short for bubuzuke, an insulting nickname given by Haruka to Shizuru early in the series.
  • While Shizuru/Natsuki is canon and by far the most popular, there is a subgroup on fanfiction.net that is dedicated to NatNao (Natsuki and Nao, who do have Belligerent Sexual Tension in the show).
• My Hero Academia has a couple, namely IzuOcha (Izuku Midoriya/Ochako Uraraka), TodoDeku (Todoroki/Izuku (the latter's nickname is Deku)), BakuDeku (Katsuki Bakugou/Izuku), Kacchako (Katsuki Bakugou/Ochako Uraraka), TodoBaku (Todoroki/Bakugo) ShinDeku (Shinso Hitoshi/Izuku),ShinKami (Shinso/Kaminari Denki) and Todomomo (Todoroki/Mono). There’s also EraserMic for Eraser Head and Present Mic and EraserMight (Eraser Head/All Might.) Hawks gets EndHawks (Endeavor/Hawks) and DabiHawks (Toya Todorki aka Dabi and Hawks)
• Nabari no Ou: Yoiharu for Yoite/Miharu, Raigau for Raikou/Gau, and Koumei for Koichi/Raimei.
• Naruto:
  • The most popular pairings in the fandom are SasuNaru (Sasuke/Naruto), NaruHina (Naruto/Hinata), NaruSaku (Naruto/Sakura), and SasuSaku (Sasuke/Sakura). In fact, if you pick any two characters from the series, chances are that they have some catchy portmanteau name due to the similarity of many characters' names making it very easy to use this naming method.
  • It also gives us one of the best crossover examples: Narutonystark.
• Negima! Magister Negi Magi:
  • KonoSetsu (Konoka / Setsuna) for the resident Les Yay couple. "KonoSetsu" is even used one of the official drama cds, when Konoka and Setsuna try to do a radio show.
  • The scanlators at One Manga use NegiNodo (Negi / Nodoka) on this page.
• Neon Genesis Evangelion and its two main contenders; Kawoshin (Kaworu/Shinji) and Asushin (Asuka/Shinji), as well as Asurei (Asuka/Rei) and Marisuka (Mari/Asuka).
• One Piece:
  • The One Piece fandom doesn't do this very often, but Cobymeppo (Coby/Helmeppo) is a notable exception, not least for being coined by the author himself. This can lead to confusion, as some people use it in its original meaning — to refer to the two characters collectively in a platonic sense — while shippers have adopted it as a pairing name. ZoLu (Zoro/Luffy) and has also seen LuNa (Luffy/Nami), ZoNa (Zoro/Nami), SaNa (Sanji/Nami) and ZoSan (Zoro/Sanji). Also see Lancock for Luffy/Hancock, Frobin for Franky/Robin, and the ever confusing (for capitalization issues) ZoRo for Zoro/Robin.
  • However, for the most part the fandom conveys pairings by simply putting together the first one or two syllables of each character's name — to illustrate, while 'Lancock' is rarely used, LuHan is common. Once one gets a hang of which syllables represents which character, it's quick and easy to decipher. For example, Lu = Luffy, Ro = Robin, therefore LuRo = Luffy/Robin. The above mentioned all come from this scheme as well.
• Oshi no Ko has an in-universe example when Aqua partakes in the "My Love with a Star Begins Now" reality dating show. Fans of the show quickly latches onto the idea of YukiYuki (the pairing of Yuki Sumi and Yukinaga), and later Aquaka (Aqua and Akane).
• Pokémon: The Series: While the franchise is better known for Idiosyncratic Ship Naming among the English-speaking fandom, the Japanese fandom uses portmantaeu couple names for their pairings. For example, PokeShipping (Ash/Misty) is known as SatoKasu (Satoshi/Kasumi) and AmourShipping (Ash/Serena) is known as SatoSere (Satoshi/Serena).
• Pretty Cure is quite fond of this, in particular Yes! Pretty Cure 5, where the fans who like yaoi generally support the pairing of Coco and Nuts, known as... Coconuts (sometimes just Coconut).
  • Futari wa Pretty Cure: NagiHono (Nagisa/Honoka).
  • Fresh Pretty Cure!: NishiBuki (Hayato Nishi/Inori Yamabuki).
  • Suite Pretty Cure ♪: HibiKana (Hibiki/Kanade).
• The Prince of Tennis has TezuFuji (Tezuka/Fuji), AtoTez (Atobe/Tezuka), RyoSaku (Ryoma/Sakuno), MomoRyo (Momoshiro/Ryoma), and SanaYuki (Sanada/Yukimura) just for a start, and that's not even getting to all of the (insert cutesy adjective) Pair" ones.
• In the Puella Magi Madoka Magica fandom, the two big pairings Homura/Madoka and Kyouko/Sayaka are nigh referred to as HomuMado (or MadoHomu; they're interchangeable) and KyouSaya(or KyoSaya) respectively. Other pairings include, but not are limited to, MamiMado (Mami/Madoka) and MamiLotte (Mami/Charlotte).
• Samurai Champloo has given us Fuugen (Fuu/Mugen), Fuujin or Jinfuu (as no one can decide which single-syllable name should be in front and no one has suggested Fuun), and Jino (Jin/Shino), among other less common couples such as Fuusuke (Fuu/Shinsuke).
• Ranma ½ has several, the most obvious one being Rakane.
• For the fandom of Reborn! (2004), most prefer to use the number system to represent the pairings (such as Byakuran/Mukuro being 10069, but some do use name combos - YamaGoku (Yamamoto/Gokudera), RyoHiba (Ryohei/Hibari), and SupaTuna (a pun on Spanner/Tsuna) are some examples - although even those are commonly referred to as 8059, 3318, and 4827 instead.
• From Rurouni Kenshin, most famously KenKao for Kenshin and Kaoru.
• Shugo Chara!:
  • There is Amuto for Amu/Ikuto, Tadamu for Tadase/Amu, Kukamu for Kukai/Amu, Ikutau for Ikuto/Utau, Kutau for Kukai/Utau, Rimau for Rima/Utau, Rimase for Tadase/Rima, and even Tadamuto when referring to the love triangle of Tadase/Amu/Ikuto.
  • Yukaidou, Nikanjou, or even Yuukari for Nikaidou Yuu/Sanjou Yukari.
• Soul Eater:
  • CroMa for Crona/Maka shippers, SoMa for Soul/Maka shippers, and TsuStar for Black*Star/Tsubaki shippers.
  • Also KiMa for Kid/Maka. Needless to say, Maka is the Launcher of a Thousand Ships.
• Tamagotchi: Mamespetchi for Mametchi/Himespetchi and Kuroneenetchi for Kuromametchi/Neenetchi.
• Tokyo Babylon: Seishirou and Subaru are often referred to as SeiSub.
• Tokyo Ghoul:
  • Hidekane (Hide/Kaneki), Shuuneki (Tsukiyama/Kaneki) and Touken (Touka/Kaneki).
  • Other pairings include Ayahina (Ayato/Hinami), Akiramon (Akira/Amon), Nishikimi (Nishiki/Kimi) and Touriko (Touka/Yoriko).
  • Re: has Arisasa (Arima/Sasaki).
• Toradora!'s title itself is a Portmanteau Couple Name; Taiga and Ryuuji ("Taiga" is tiger, transcribed into Japanese, whereas Ryuuji is a name dealing with dragons) are flipped for the title, so we get "Tora" the actual word for tiger in Japanese, and "Dora" comes from "Doragon", which is the Japanese transcription of Dragon.
• Tsubasa -RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE- has Official Couple SyaoSaku (Syaoran/Sakura) and (yaoi) fans' beloved KuroFai (Kurogane/Fai).
• X1999 has one, with the Red String of Fate couple: Sorashi for Sorata/Arashi.
• ×××HOLiC: Doumeki/Watanuki is referred to as "donuts". This was coined by a Fandom VIP as a parody of silly portmanteau ship names, but her readers picked it up and started using it (mostly) unironically.
• Yuri!!! on Ice has quite a few with Victuuri (for Victor/Yuuri) being the most popular for obvious reasons. Others include Otayuri for Otabek/Yuri, Chrischu for Christophe/Phichit (Chulanont), Seungchuchu for Seung-gil/Phichit, Phichuuri for Phichit/Yuuri, and Leoji for Leo/Guang Hong (Ji).
• Zombie Land Saga: Several:
  • Junko/Ai: JunAi, or what the portmanteau would mean in Japanese, Pure Love.
  • Sakura/Saki: SakuSaki
  • Sakura/Tae: SakuTae
  • Koutarou/Sakura: KouSaku
