Nice Job Fixing It Villain / One Piece

Go To

Situations where villains accidentally give the heroes an edge in One Piece.

  • Arlong deciding to screw Nami over by having the corrupt Captain Nezumi and his crew take all the berries she stole from other pirates is what provokes Luffy into deciding to take him down.
  • Nezumi letting it slip that Arlong was the one who sent him results in Nami realizing Arlong purposefully screwed her over. This leads to Luffy finding out about it and becoming enraged enough to bring Arlong down.
  • To get rid of Luffy, Eneru traps the pirate's arm inside a huge ball of gold. Guess what Luffy uses to stop Eneru's Final Smash?
  • Robin's backstory involves the World Government deciding to destroy the scholars of Ohara for studying the Blank Century, and bombarding the island with a Buster Call while evacuating the civilians. Robin, the daughter of one of the archaeologists, as well as someone who recently became an archaeologist herself, tries to board the evacuation ship, but Spandine, the director of CP9 at the time, recognized her and refused to let her board, hoping to let her die with the island. Vice-Admiral Sakazuki then destroyed the evacuation ship, so Spandine inadvertently saved Robin's life.
  • Blackbeard's attack on Drum Island helped them to overthrow the despotic and idiotic ruler, as he fled for his own safety.
  • During the Impel Down Arc, Luffy's first confrontation with Magellan in Level Four of the complex is a Curb-Stomp Battle with Luffy on the curb, with the result being Luffy poisoned with Hydra, a venom that kills in 24 hours. Magellan then tells the other guards to send him to Level 5, despite the fact that he'll die anyway. Unfortunately for Magellan, Luffy is eventually found there by Ivankov and the other members of the Newkama Land colony (which not even the guards know about) and Ivankov is able to use his Horu Horu no Mi Devil Fruit power to aid Luffy in fighting off the poison, which he eventually does. As a result, Magellan soon has a crisis on his hands as Luffy's trek through Impel Down continues with even more gusto. (Of course, one can hardly blame Magellan, as nobody had ever survived the Hydra. Even Ivankov said that his help would only raise Luffy's nonexistent chance of surviving to about 5%.)
  • Magellan poisoning Luffy has more repercussions than that. Magellan’s poison’s potency can be adjusted and when he engulfed Luffy in his poisonous cocktail, Luffy’s body got exposed to toxins of all kinds of degrees. Now, normally this would have meant certain death for him. But thanks to Ivankov, he survived, and in the process his body was able to live long enough to produce absurdly strong antibodies to combat poison. By poisoning Luffy so severely, Magellan has inadvertently given Luffy the ability to shrug off most types of poison, as demonstrated when he was fighting Caesar. The mad clown tries to kill him by enveloping him in a giant cloud of Deadly Gas, but Luffy simply breathes it all in at once without any issues.
  • Hody Jones and the New Fishman Pirates' whole invasion of Fishman Island (and later nearly destroying the island) is the incident which finally ends the hatred of Fishmen upon humans, before which the Fishmen would have gladly kicked the Straw Hats out.
  • Caesar Clown does this after Luffy hands him his ass, by trying to stab Smoker's heart (which was extracted courtesy of Trafalgar Law) in order to take him out, too. Thing is, Law had tricked him, and what he actually held was his subordinate Monet's heart. He chose to stab it at exactly the moment that Monet was going to use a self-destruct mechanism to kill everyone on the island, thus saving Smoker along with the rest of his enemies.
  • Doflamingo's seemingly fool-proof plan to prevent Luffy enacting his Spanner in the Works tendencies results in this. His plot involved a tournament for Ace's Devil Fruit, in order to distract Luffy from destroying the SMILEs factory. Sure enough, Luffy enters, and finds himself in a pickle when he can't leave the tournament without being noticed and allowing the devil fruit to fall into Burgess's hands due to being in the finals, until Sabo arrives (apparently as a Revolutionary) and trades places with him. The thing is, Sabo's appearance is largely Doflamingo's own fault. Chances are the Revolutionary Army would have never taken action on Dressrosa and Sabo would have never appeared had it not been for the tournament for the Mera Mera no Mi. What proceeds afterwards is a domino effect that complete derails his plans, to the point that, in hindsight, setting up the tournament was the first step towards his downfall.
    • The tournament becomes Doflamingo's worst plan in another way — the rest of the fighters, once they've lost their matches, are turned into Living Toys and made slaves of the Donquixote Family. Once Usopp stops the curse and everyone goes back to normal, these same fighters are now royally PO'd at Doflamingo and bound and determined to wipe him out. In the ensuing battle, several of the Donquixote Family's officers are taken down by these champions. It's stated that Doflamingo's actions have united an otherwise random assortment of champions, rogues and weirdos into an Army of Thieves and Whores. Even worse, these people (totaling over 5,000) ultimately unite behind Luffy. Thanks to his meddling, Doflamingo has just created the biggest pirate alliance since the legendary Whitebeard. This is bound to have repercussions long after his defeat.
    • Doflamingo's defeat also did some Villain Fixing on its own- Jack abandoned razing Zou to the ground in order to save him (and got himself curb-stomped by the senior Marines), saving the island, and once his crimes become public (alongside Crocodile's own crimes), most of the world's Kings finally decide to abolish the Seven Warlords System.
  • Usopp stopping the curse on the living toys also counts. Sugar had him at her mercy, and when ordered to dispose of him, decided to do so by feeding him the spicy grape he tried to feed her, thinking that it was poisoned. The grape causes Usopp to scream and blow fire while making one hell of a Nightmare Face that scares the living hell out of Sugar, and knocks her out (which was exactly what they wanted). Not only that, the face becomes such a Trauma Button to her, he's able to weaponize it by making a projectile on its likeness to make her faint again, right before she can take down Luffy and Law, who were the two main threats to Doflamingo.
  • A minor one was when Baby 5 was believing that Sai was proposing to her, her ally Lao G was telling his opponents that she was only a "convenient" underling. Along with Sai promising to marry her, Baby 5 defected from the Donquixote Family and joined the Happo Navy that becomes part of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet.
  • During Whole Cake Island, the Charlotte siblings, the main body of the Big Mom Pirates, end up making things easier for the Straw Hats and harder for themselves. First, Pudding gloats about their plans to kill the Vinsmokes and take their technology... unaware that Sanji, the White Sheep of the family, is listening. Meanwhile, Opera, who was supposed to have killed Luffy and Nami in the prison, ends up losing his prisoners to Jimbei, and lies about what happened to avoid a You Have Failed Me death. Smoothie, hearing that there's some kind of ruckus in the prison, has the entire level sealed off to keep Big Mom from finding out and upsetting her. This allows the Straw Hats to plan their own counter to Big Mom's plans. When they begin, part of it involves having dozens of animals transformed into Luffy by a captured Devil Fruit user as part of a distraction. Katakuri, who has epic Combat Clairvoyance, tells everyone to focus on the real Luffy... and completely misses Brook, wearing a Paper-Thin Disguise, who manages to complete the first step of the counterattack.
  • This becomes a habit for the Charlottes throughout the course of the Whole Cake Island arc after the tea party is foiled. Of particular note is Brulee, who announces Katakuri's defeat at Luffy's hands to the forces of Cacao Island while Luffy and Sanji are trying to flee to the Sunny. While it succeeds in getting them to focus more on Luffy, it causes them to open themselves up to attacks from the Vinsmokes, who run roughshod over them, allowing their brother and his captain to escape.
  • In Wano, the heroes are trying to raise an army from the citizens for a raid on Kaido's hideout. However, since they have to be undercover, the alliance has to be very circumspect about it, only identifying possible allies by a tattoo on their ankles. Luffy is imprisoned in a labor camp early on, and later learns that most of the workers were imprisoned for rebelling against Kaido — thus, when he takes over the camp, the alliance suddenly has at least 4,000 samurai to join on their raid! Meanwhile, Kaido's forces get wind of the tattoos and begin imprisoning everyone sporting them. However, as Sanji notes, this means that all of their possible recruits have been gathered in one place, adding another thousand to their ranks!
  • Kaido does some self-sabotaging of his own:
    • After he defeats Luffy, instead of killing him or throwing him into the ocean, he decides to break his spirit so that he becomes a loyal minion. Well... Luffy is too tough to be broken, and he then meets Hyogoro and Kidd, and then everything goes From Bad to Worse for Kaido and his men very soon.
      • Kaido makes this mistake again at the end of their second fight, now despite all of Wano in arms against the Beasts Pirates, he just decides to throw Luffy out of the island and into the ocean for some reason... which doesn't work and galvanizes the Alliance even further, resulting in the defeat of the Big Mom Pirates.
    • Kaido destroying Okobore Town just For the Evulz turns Big Mom against him, as she (while having lost her memories) was tended to and fed by the villagers, and thus decides to protect the village against him.
  • When the Straw Hats and their allies invade Kaido's fortress (where Kaido's men vastly outnumber them), Queen unleashes a virus (that turns anyone into ice demons and dies) both at the invaders and his own non-powered men (who he believes were useless.) But then just for laughs, Queen threw a small bottle of antidote believing they would kill each other for it. Chopper was able to get the antidote, mass-produce it, and cured every infected person in the room. Queen's men then joined the Straw Hats to help overthrow Kaido.
  • When Zeus was temporarily separated from Big Mom, the latter thought he abandoned her and decided to replace him with a new homie with the same powers named Hera. Big Mom had Hera absorb Zeus, but that accidentally caused some of his soul to slip into Nami's Clima-Tact and turned it into a Morph Weapon. This not only allowed Zeus to make a true Heel–Face Turn, but to truly become Nami's upgraded weapon to finish off Ulti (who was one of the two Tobi Roppo Big Mom heavily damaged — as Page One was knocked out by her.)
  • As a way of taking his clan's enemies with them, Kanjuro creates a massive flaming ghost which proceeds to set fire to Onigashima as it wanders around trying to kill everybody who ever wronged the Kurozumi. Not only does it serve to save Robin from two pursuing Cipher Pol 0 agents by engulfing them (though they emerge unscathed a few panels later, Robin is already well away from them), but it also ends up setting fire to Orochi, weakening him enough that Denjiro can finish the job.
  • The World Government pulled the biggest one so far by sacrificing one of their best Cipher Pol 0 agents to kill Luffy during his battle with Kaido so the former's Devil Fruit wouldn't awaken. Kaido was enraged and killed the agent for interrupting their fight. However, this event that the World Government was trying to prevent caused Luffy's Devil Fruit, which was NOT the Gum-Gum Fruit but was actually the Human-Human Fruit Model: Nika to awaken, which allowed the Straw Hat Captain to eventually defeat Kaido and become a threat to the World Government.
