I don't know if it's LOVE or MAGIC! (Koi ka Mahou ka Wakaranai!) is a shonen manga by Atsushi Uchiyama.

After learning that they had potential to wield magic during their elementary school years, Kaito Miyamae made a promise with his childhood friend Mai Minase-Florence that they will be great magic wielders. Time passed, they are now high schoolers in the Seiryuu Academy of Magic yet Kaito had yet to awaken his magic ability so he gets poor grades and is Hatchling-tier, the lowest magic wielder rank. Trying to cover up his insecurities of not awakening his magic, he periodically declares that he still attends the academy so "[he'll] get popular with the girls" which gives him a bad reputation. Meanwhile, Mai had worked hard, eventually becoming the youngest to be a Phoenix-tier magic wielder and a member of the Seven Sages.

One day Kaito finally awakens his magic ability but it turns out to be Charm. Because of his bad reputation and the prejudical stigma of Charm magic, he is labeled "the worst of the worst."

The manga was serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine from December 2020 to July 2021, being unfortunately Cut Short after only 33 chapters due to low volume sales.

This manga contains examples of:

  • Accidental Kiss: In Chapter 11, titled First Kiss!?, Kaito and Ayane did this when Moeka, who was holding the latter from behind while she was straddling on top of the former, pushed Ayane when she hastily moved away to barf from her overdrinking alcoholic beverages.
  • The Apprentice: Ayane and Kaito are both apprentices to Moeka.
  • Beach Episode: Chapters 13-18 are spent on a private island owned by Moeka, with the cast spending most the time in their swimsuits.
  • Charm Person: The effects of magics like Lust, Captivate and Charm.
  • Commonality Connection:
    • Kaito and Ayane have a similar type of magic, faced bullying and discrimination because of said magic, and both later became apprentices to Moeka.
    • Kaito and Kiara manage to bond over their shared respect and admiration of Mai.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • During the trial against the Owl-tiers, Kiara is knocked out from a single attack by Tsuchigami.
    • Kiara is on the receiving end of one again during her fight with Yami; her attacks don't scratch her opponent and a single blast of Yami's Vengeful Malediction takes Kiara out of commission.
  • Cut Short: The manga ended after only 33 chapters due to low volume sales.
  • Childhood Friends:
    • Kaito and Mai were incredibly close friends who promised each other that they would both become legendary mages. However, Mai's aptitude for magic and Kaito's lack thereof led to the two slowly drifting apart as she rose though the ranks. By the start of the series, they haven't spoken to each other for quite some time.
    • Kaito and Yui have also known each other since they were young, with her being the heiress of the dojo he trained at. The two practically grew up together, to such an extent that Kaito sees her as an older sister.
  • Defiled Forever: After Moeka's "training" with Yui, Kaito finds the latter collapsed in heap claiming she "can't be a bride anymore".
  • Giving Up the Ghost: When Kaito awakens his Charm ability and causes a huge commotion at the end of the first chapter, Yui's spirit can be seen floating out of her mouth.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: Those who practice Tengan style magical combat can use magic and martial arts that are synergistic with each other. Kaito is a practitioner of the martial arts aspect even before he awakened his magic ability but has yet to find a way to use his Charm ability with the martial arts.
  • Like a Son to Me: Having trained with them since his childhood, Kaito is so close with the Tengen household that they consider him family. The patriarch of the household even remarks that he often forgets Kaito isn't his actual son.
  • New Transfer Student: Ayane, who had previously stopped going to school due to bullying when she was younger, starts going to Seiryuu Academy after agreeing to help train Kaito.
  • The Notable Numeral: The Seven Sages are a group of incredibly powerful and influential mages.
  • Power Incontinence: Kaito is initially unable to control when his Charm magic activates. Considering it's able to make crowds of people fall madly in love with him, this worsens his already terrible reputation.
  • The Promise. After discovering they had the potential to wield magic, childhood friends Kaito and Mai promised each other that they would one day join the Seven Sages and become powerful mages like the legendary sage Heiland.
  • Pretend to Be Brainwashed: At one point, after Kaito's Charm wears off, Moeka continues to act like she's still under its effects and tries to get him to kiss a still charmed Ayane.
Moeka: I actually came to my senses a while ago... but we were havin' so much fun that I decided to just play along for a bit~
  • Public Hater, Private Fan: In the first chapter, Kiara is mocking and dismissive of Mai, but is later revealed to be a huge fangirl of her. Kiara not only greatly admires Mai, but the star decorations in her hair are a part of Mai's official merchandise and she has a picture of Mai as her phone's lock screen.
  • Random Power Ranking: The ranks of magic wielders come in seven ranks, named for mundane to magical avians in Gratuitous German:
    1. Küken (Hatchling); the lowest rank
    2. Huhn (Hen)
    3. Rabe (Raven)
    4. Eule (Owl)
    5. Adler (Eagle)
    6. Greif (Gryphon)
    7. Phönix (Phoenix); the highest rank
  • Rule of Seven:
    • There are seven ranks to rate magic wielders.
    • The Seven Sages are a group comprised of the seven strongest individuals of the magic wielding community.
  • Sacred First Kiss: Discussed in chapter 12, Kaito tries to diffuse Yui who had gone yandere by saying the Accidental Kiss he had with Ayane wasn't a big deal.
  • Seppuku: Feeling ashamed after getting knocked out during the trial against the Owl tiers yet still being promoted because her team won, Kiara, garbed in a white kimono and wielding a tantō, threatens to commit suicide in the middle of a packed hallway, not only out of embarrassment, but also in the belief it will increase her follower count. Ayane manages to talk her out of it.
  • Teleportation: Moeka claims teleportation is a skill common among each member of the Seven Sages.
  • Tempting Fate: Shortly after the two are made move in together, Ayane admits to Kaito that she's slightly afraid of him accidentally casting Charm on her and Kaito agrees that it would be incredibly dangerous. Guess what happens almost immediately afterwards?
  • Wing Ding Eyes: People affected by Kaito's Charm magic have hearts in their pupils.
  • Wizarding School: The Seiryuu Academy of Magic.
