Hope of the Shield Hero

  • Naofumi gets embarrassed when someone asks if Raphtalia is his daughter.
  • The Slave Trader noticing that Raphtalia Is All Grown Up (coming straight out of the anime scene, no less):
Slave Trader: Still... I'm amazed you helped that scrawny bag of bones grow so much in such a short time. Even if she's not a virgin, she's guaranteed to fetch you twenty gold pieces.
Raphtalia: [Offended] I am a virgin!
    Slave Trader: [Enthusiastically] Thirty-five, then!
Naofumi: [Pretends to consider it] Thirty-five gold pieces, huh?
    Raphtalia: [Angry] Naofumi-sama!
  • Naofumi, Raphtalia, and Filo decide to book a hot spring to relax in. Things escalate from there, resulting in Naofumi receiving a Groin Attack from a panicking Raphtalia after she drops her towel.
  • Motoyasu accidentally seeing Myne with bedhead and no makeup on.
  • When Naofumi introduces Filo as his and Raphtalia's daughter, Motoyasu assumes they mean she is their biological daughter. Naofumi and Raphtalia are too flustered to admit that Filo is adopted, with the later running away.

Diligence of the Shield Hero

  • After Naofumi mocks Motoyasu for unleashing the Curse seed, Motoyasu senses someone has mocked him. He later gets a Dope Slap from Granny for getting distracted from training.
  • During the meeting where the Queen mentions the Cal Mira Archipelago, the issue of who will stay behind to protect the Heroes' town is risen, and Motoyasu jokingly suggests that he will do it since he is the one with the highest level - only for the Queen to take him up seriously.
  • Naofumi finds that L'Arc and Theresa are sharing the cabin with him and Raphtalia. He promptly tries to escape, only for Raphtalia to pull him by the ear.
    • After the kerfuffle where L'Arc believes that Naofumi is using the Shield Hero's name as an alias, L'Arc decides to call him "Shield Kiddo". Naofumi barely holds himself from murdering L'Arc.
  • Naofumi being completely nonchalant about the sea movement while Ren and Itsuki are puking their guts out.
  • L'Arc takes Itsuki, Naofumi and Ren into a pub crawl. Ren Can't Hold His Liquor and gets completely plastered in his third beer, while Naofumi eats several ruculu berries, much to the shock and terror of everyone else in the pub - because, as he learns later, ruculu berries have such an absurdly high alcohol content that the only way it can be consumed by humans is by diluting one berry in an entire barrel of water.
    • After several drinks, L'Arc hits his limit and begins to bawl about Therese not liking him. Ren (who is even more drunk than before) commiserates with him and the two bawl together.
  • Therese takes Raphtalia, Rishia and Wyndia to buy bikinis.
    • Rishia sees one of the bikinis and imagines wearing it in front of Itsuki. She immediately collapses while blood spurts from her nose.
    • Therese jokingly suggests Wyndia (who is angry because all the swimsuits are too large for her) to wear a suit that is pretty much two strings. Wyndia screams at her and grabs the first thing she finds.
    • Therese asks Raphtalia if she had sex with Naofumi - only for poor Raphtalia to ask what sex is. After a page long Beat, Therese asks aghast how she doesn't know about sex - only for their conversation to get interrupted by Wyndia, who is apopletic that someone as beautiful as her doesn't even know about sex.
      • Then Therese decides to take it upon herself to give Raphtalia The Talk. All the while, Rishia is listening and blushing like a tomato.
  • Aksel, Bakta and Maya are in their own pub crawl - and Maya quickly destroys everyone she faces in arm wrestling. Bakta goads Aksel into challenging Maya. He wins.
  • Naofumi and Itsuki bring L'Arc and Ren out of the latest pub and encounter the girls. Therese quickly drags L'Arc away while threatening not to give him anything against the hangover, and Ren almost drunkenly confesses to Wyndia before falling asleep.
  • Naofumi makes an accessory for Therese and apologizes because it wasn't perfect... but she loves it so much that not only does she give him her entire purse (which has more than 500 gold coins), she orders L'Arc to give her his purse as well while threatening to castrate him. He Screams Like a Little Girl.
    • Meanwhile, Naofumi is daydreaming about what he'll be able to do with so much cash - while completely ignoring Melty, who is angry because Naofumi never made something like that for her.
    • In an Omake, Naofumi manages to make a Perfect Quality accessory... and Therese instantly decides to name him her God. The religion swiftly takes through all of Melromarc and Siltvelt.
  • After a fight with the island's boss, L'Arc takes some of the best pieces before Therese catches him and forces him to hand some of them over to Naofumi. When L'Arc grouses about Naofumi stealing his girlfriend, Naofumi decides to get back at him for his earlier teasing and tells him to take up accessory making - only for Therese to reveal that he did that, and the latest he tried somehow exploded.
  • The guys and the girls separately go to the public baths, not knowing the others are there.
    • Wyndia remains angry about all the other girls (save for Filo and Melty) being quite well stacked.
    • Filo hears Naofumi and decides to jump in with her papa. After Naofumi convinces her to rejoin the girls, L'Arc suggests peeking on the girls. Everyone (even Dou-Lon) save for Naofumi is interested, and only Itsuki and Ren realize how bad an idea it is after Naofumi points out the girls' likely reaction. The Heroes rush out of the bath just in time to see L'Arc's plan collapse along with the wall separating the baths. L'Arc gets promptly sent flying via Filo-powered kick to the groin and the other men are quickly targeted by the girls.
    • The following chapter tells what happened to them: they were forced to sit seiza-style for hours.
  • Naofumi decides to make a barbecue for himself and his party - who promptly decide to invite the other Heroes, as well as L'Arc and Therese.
    • When all the Heroes and companions start to get rowdy over being the first to eat Naofumi's cooking, he has to bring out the big guns: threaten to give Filo first pick. Filo pouts when everyone settles in a queue - and leaves her last.
    • After L'Arc (who is still in pain from the previous day's Groin Attack) tastes Naofumi's cooking for the first time, he cries because it is so good he fears Therese will definitely drop him.
    • Then the local count and several people arrive, and Naofumi fears there are bad news from Lurolona - only for the former to reveal they want to join the barbecue. One hour later, Naofumi's swamped with requests for food and he's left wishing that it had actually been bad news from Lurolona.
    • Wyndia's not only a Tsundere for Ren.
"Yes, the delicious meal... that I thought would never end," she snarked. Seriously, it wasn't like it'd been that good.
She'd only gone back for like, six platefuls at most.
    • Since he was wearing the Mask Shield at the moment, now going around Cal Mira has him getting swamped with job offers from the local restaurants... or people running away from the "alcohol demon".
  • When the Heroes go to the beach to relax... poor Dou-Lon pays for the previous peeping because Eclair won't let him bow out of training.
    • Naofumi watches Wyndia in a bikini and thinks that Ren would have a Nose Bleed if he saw her. Then Raphtalia shows up in a VERY revealing bikini - and Naofumi begins to bleed from the nose.
      • And later, as she looks at Naofumi wearing his swim trunks and open shirt, she also begins to bleed.
  • After the Cal Mira Wave ends, Naofumi wonders about the several issues this has brought to light - but the looming question is whether all the Cardinal Heroes begin as completely useless. This time, even Itsuki and Ren can tell Naofumi is thinking something rude about them.
  • Itsuki's reaction to being told Rishia is his girlfriend by Motoyasu and then Granny.
  • Motoyasu and Farrie peep on Ren and Wyndia's outing, checking to see if it is a date or not. When they're convinced that it is a date, they plan on crashing it... until Rino and Tersia appear, dragging them both away by the ears so the two lovers down below won't be interrupted.
  • When they are visiting Sickle, Naofumi tells Kizuna to take one side of the city while he takes the other. When Kizuna asks why:
Naofumi: Because by the time I'm done, the merchants on my side will be wishing they'd set up shop on the other side of town. (cue aura of malicious intent)
    • By the time he's done, he's pretty much imploded the city's economy by ripping off every merchant - and the city's gained a legend in the form of the Merchant Demon.
  • A Running Gag from the beginning of the Otherworld Arc is Aksel and Maya struggling with their relationship because Maya looks like a child again. The moment Maya recovers her adult looks, she goes to Itsuki in their next camping to bluntly demand her tent - because she's going to drag Aksel into it so they can finally have sex. After being Death Glared into submission, a shaky Itsuki gives them the tent. At least they had the decency of taking it well away from the rest of the team.
  • Naofumi creates a Shikigami out of his blood and Raphtalia's hair, which comes out as a tanuki he calls Raph-chan. He is so overwhelmed by Raph-chan's cuteness that he has the compulsion to pet her... which fills almost an entire page with nothing but Pet.
    • When he later is forced to store Raph-chan into an ofuda to avoid getting recognized, he begins to feel the same compulsion... and internally complains because the paper is too rough and cold.
  • When Naofumi faces off the wannabe hero from Katana, the latter acts arrogant and superior... and Naofumi sincerely asks who he is, because he doesn't remember him. Not that he cares, because, as far as Naofumi is concerned, the guy's just a dumb sideshow.
  • In the party after returning to Sickle, Naofumi and Raphtalia have a walk together. Naofumi loses any brain-to-mouth filter and keeps stating how hot she is.
    • Just as they are getting in the moment, L'Arc shows up, completely plastered, and kills the moment by pointing out Naofumi is having a Nose Bleed. Then he hides away because one of his ministers is looking for him so he can finally begin to work on all the paperwork that has accumulated since he went to Raphtalia's World.
    • Naofumi gleefully needles L'Arc by telling him that either he drops the "Shield Kiddo" nickname or Naofumi will call him "boy". L'Arc struggles to say his name before throwing a tantrum and running.
    • Therese arrives just then and Naofumi mercilessly sells L'Arc out by pointing where he went.
    • After Their First Time, Naofumi realizes he's not the first of the heroes to do so:
He might have also been crazy because he and Raphtalia had actually done it. Naofumi, a random otaku, had treaded territory now where only Motoyasu had gone before with... ... ...
Ugh, thinking of it like that brought Naofumi down from his high somewhat. Poor Motoyasu, having to live with that on his head for the rest of his life.
      • He also discovers that the Shield does have some standards: he doesn't get a new shield from having sex or from a used condom.
      • When Raphtalia wakes, she giggles that, at least, the Shield did not start to clang on par with the sex. It turns out that the Shield also makes him a Sex God (he has such a low Attack stat that he just can't cause any pain to her).
      • The next chapter, which takes place a few days later in the middle of a Wave, Naofumi and Raphtalia are such a pair of Insatiable Newlyweds that not only have they already gone through the (large) box of condoms Therese gave Raphtalia the previous chapter, they regard the Waves as an inconvenience to their sex life.
      • Fitoria shows up in a heartwarming moment... only for Filo to reveal that Naofumi and Raphtalia are now having sex. So Fitoria takes a moment to tease Naofumi for finally getting through the Unresolved Sexual Tension between him and Raphtalia.
  • Meanwhile, L'Arc keeps trying to hide away (while still drunk out of his gourd) to avoid the paperwork. He suddenly encounters Kenshiro's ghost - whose first sentence is a complaint that he's drinking wine instead of sake. L'Arc immediately suspects he may have drunk too much.
    • After a conversation where both of them finally hash out their troubles and make peace with each other, Kenshiro leaves, claiming he's stalled him long enough. Turns out, he was also distracting L'Arc so Therese would finally find him.
    • When L'Arc proves really reluctant to return to work, she tricks him into thinking she wants to sleep with him, only to drag him to his office, set him behind his desk and sober him up so he won't be able to escape the long hours of work ahead. L'Arc lets out a Big "NO!" at realizing what has just happened.
  • During the Sickle Wave, there's a connection to Raphtalia's World, which allows Filo to temporarily regain her Filolial form. She celebrates this by unleashing her most painful attack on the monsters.
  • After the Wave, Minister Stone is astonished to learn that the next Wave will take place in forty-five days, and decides it's time for another celebration - until Itsuki reminds him of what happened with L'Arc in the previous one. Stone decides to change it to a small feast, while L'Arc screams in pain as he keeps getting buried in paperwork.
  • Itsuki caught Naofumi and Raphtalia having sex in the baths (heavily scarring him) a couple of days before the Sickle Wave, so he later tries to go there while he's sure they are nowhere close... and catches Aksel and Maya having Victory Sex. Itsuki promptly locks himself in his room, thoroughly sick of everyone around him having sex.
  • When Naofumi needs some materials, he hands the list to Kizuna, who attempts to scamper. Glass tries to get her to join in the training, but Dou-Lon distracts her, allowing Kizuna to escape. Glass takes her revenge by going full out on the poor hakuko.
  • Rishia is mortified to learn that all the "breaks" Naofumi and Raphtalia were taking during training was so they could have a quickie on the side.
  • L'Arc's utter misery that he just can't catch up with Naofumi in the field of non-combat skills like cooking or crafting.
  • Daitan, the Blunt Weapons Hero, tries to diffuse a fight between Kizuna and Akane (the Jewel Hero) by stating he likes all kinds of breasts. Akane slams him into a wall.
  • Daitan tries to flirt a tad too heavy with Raphtalia. Fifteen seconds later, Naofumi boosts Raphtalia with a spell and she plunges Daitan head first into the ground up to the waist. The earthquake it causes is noticed all the way up to Lazuli.
    • Naofumi can't help but think how awesome Raphtalia being violent is, so Raphtalia threatens to bury him next. Naofumi retaliates by thinking of her in spicy situations to make her blush.
  • Daitan thinks it'll be great training with Aksel, Maya, and Dou-Lon. He soon regrets it, because Aksel and Maya keep flirting all the time and Dou-Lon is a Blood Knight that complains the monsters are too weak.
  • Kizuna nonchalantly stating how much she wants to grope Glass.
  • When Naofumi sees how serious L'Arc is in regards to his position as King of Sickle, he decides to take the mickey out of him because he finds it weird.
  • Daitan asks Itsuki if he died because of a truck, and when he says yes if it was on the street. When Itsuki says it was, Daitan claims a win because he also died because of a truck - but he was inside a gym and the truck had to get through the lobby and into the main area.
  • During the fight with Kyo, the Otherworld heroes get encouraged to join in so they can help the heroes stop him. Daitan doesn't know what to do... until he decides to for Full-Frontal Assault, with only an actual Censor Bar covering his privates, while acting like a bully towards a nerd. Kyo decides to target him just so he can get him out of his sight.
    • Then he compounds on it by picking a stone... and doing a Crayon Shin-chan Shout-Out. Filo is the only one who finds it funny. Everyone else is confused and disgusted. Everyone that comes from Japan dies on the inside. In the end, Naofumi simply pushes "the crime against humanity" aside so he can absorb Kyo's inevitable attempt to destroy Daitan.
      • In the omake, Naofumi instead steps away from Daitan so Kyo will erase the "crime against humanity". Itsuki attempts to shoot himself in the head while Naofumi asks Kyo to kill him... only for Kyo to beg to have his soul erased rather than live with that image engraved in his mind. And, as the other people try to convince the heroes not to seek death, the author throws himself off his cloud to deal with the self-inflicted psychological damage.
  • When the Vassal Mirror comes to Naofumi, it has a "conversation" with the Shield Weapon by flashing their gemstones. Naofumi believes he hears a voice coming from the Shield telling the Mirror "Lol, you should have grabbed him first, loser."
  • In the omake for Chapter 86 of Diligence, it plays up the interaction with Miyagi, the false Musical Instruments Hero, into Akane, Daitan, and Hoshi admitting they don't remember him even though they were all brought to the world together... and when the former attempts to shout his name, he gets interrupted by a Kabuki performer and a gust of wind throwing him into Daitan so the latter will burn him with his mace before another gust of wind throws him into a garbage chute. The author even lampshades how he could be Trash II since the canon Trash II was the first Trash in here.
  • L'Arc gives crafting another try in an attempt to finally upstage Naofumi. He finally makes an average grade accessory, cheers about getting in track to his goal - and when he moves to enchant it, it explodes. Given how his room is later described as having scorch marks, it's clear he's far from achieving success. Meanwhile, Therese - who is in Lapis, well away from Sickle - starts laughing because she knows L'Arc is doing something stupid.
  • Hoshi meets Kuro, one of the girls that works in his cat/maid cafe... and begs to rub his face in her belly. As an embarrassed Kuro keeps hitting him, his begging keeps going up in how much time he wants.
  • The stinger for the end of the Diligence arc is the heroes of Kizuna's world summoning someone that can wield the Vassal Mirror. The mirror ends up summoning a Japanese teen who presents himself as Jun Iwatani, Naofumi's brother. Which is implied to have been caused by the Shield laughing at the Mirror.
  • In the omakes for the chapter, Hoshi creates a new series, based on Yomogi - which is a blatant recreation of Sword Art Online, but with the atrociously long title "The Discount Genderbent Lesbian Kirito Who was Summoned to Save Another World". Naturally, Yomogi hates it, because the main character is an edgelord with zero personality. And the least said about the sex scene, the best.
    • Unfortunately for Yomogi, the entire thing becomes a gold mine as the first million copies of the first volume are sold out in one week - and she quickly gets her set of crazy fan girls, one of whom crashes into the room she's in, declaring she has already written a million-word fanfiction of herself and Yomogi falling in love. Yomogi promptly does a Super Window Jump to escape, with the fangirl following. And the scene then switches to the author complaining about ruining the hype with stupid scenes.

Virtue of the Shield Hero

  • Chapter 1 of Virtue goes to what Motoyasu is doing while Naofumi and Itsuki are in Kizuna's world.
    • As he narrates what he does, he keeps berating himself as he does the recap, telling himself he has to be better than Naofumi while doing them and stop sidetracking.
      • The omake at the end has Motoyasu doing such a long recap that Fitoria has the time to go to the other world, return, and fall asleep along with her flock - as well as the reincarnators that were trying to attack them. And it ends with a Call-Back to Hope Chapter 29's Omake.
Hope, Chapter 29: My name is Motoyasu and I'm going to make love to this spear!
Virtue, Chapter 1: And that is why the goal of my journey is to make love to my spear!
    • When Amber, Motoyasu's Filolial Queen, turns into her human form, Motoyasu turns around, mortified by the fact that she's a naked cute teenager, and begs Amber to turn back to a Filolial while Amber misses the point of what Motoyasu is asking.
    • Motoyasu ends up making Amber's clothes himself because he really can't handle dealing with the tailor, who is such an Otaku it traumatizes him.
      • When it comes to Blue, Ren's Filolial, Motoyasu decides to help him find a different tailor, if only because he doesn't want Ren to be traumatized again.
    • Fitoria drags Motoyasu to this world's side of the Wave that happened after Naofumi and Itsuki found their parties. After Motoyasu One Hit Kills the Wave Boss, Fitoria teases him about leaving the work for him, and when Motoyasu challenges her to a body count competition, she replies she'll go to the other world and kill all the monsters she can while waiting for Naofumi to make his report. Motoyasu is left despondent because it's certainly not something he can do.
      • Fitoria then uses her telepathic communication with Amber to tell Motoyasu that she's killed at least a thousand monsters, therefore she won.
    • Motoyasu observes as the Filolials tear apart the body of one of the monsters, with the lovely detail of mentioning how its organs and blood spilled to the ground.
Ah, they were truly beautiful and noble creatures...
  • When Fitoria takes Motoyasu to a part of her Sanctuary, he complains about the stink... and Fitoria awkwardly admits that it's her personal nest and she doesn't do a lot of cleaning. Motoyasu offers to rip his own tongue out to atone.
    • Then Amber reveals that the reason Fitoria hasn't cleaned up in years is because she's a Lazy Bum.
  • Wyndia has been reviewing the stories and biographies of past Cardinal Heroes... and a lot of them are pretty much about what they did with their spouses or their harems. Farrie blatantly calls it 'smut'.
