Scarlet & Emerald is a fanfiction based upon the My Hero Academia and Touhou Project franchises. It primarily follows Izuku Midoriya and Himiko Toga (in this story, now Himiko Scarlet) throughout several periods of their lives.
Not to be confused with the webcomic of the same name.
Scarlet & Emerald contains examples of:
- Absurdly Youthful Parent: Remilia and Sakuya. In the future sections, Himiko is this while Remilia and Sakuya are Absurdly Youthful Grandparents.
- Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Izuku is an orphan, and is Quirkless in Gensokyo, a land where the Superpower Lottery gives out amazing prizes on a normal basis.
- Adaptational Badass:
- Izuku learns to control One for All much faster due to his previous training with Sakuya, Meiling, and Remilia. He even unlocks the Blackwhip Quirk during the Stain arc, rather than several arcs down the line.
- Himiko has all the ridiculous power of a Touhou vampire rather than being a human with a shapeshifting quirk who Fights Like a Normal.
- Adaptational Heroism: Himiko goes from a dangerous villain to the daughter of the Scarlet family, who are anti-villainous at worst.
- Adaptational Nice Guy:
- Reimu is still a jerk at times but is still much nicer than in canon.
- Yukari has less of a tendency to screw things up because It Amused Me, and instead only as part of a greater plan.
- Adaptation Species Change: Himiko is now a vampire.
- Allohistorical Allusion:Izuku [thinking]: I definitely went overboard with One for All... I might start breaking my bones if I keep using it like that. How stupid would that be, a hero who breaks his own bones?!
- Anachronic Order: All over the place. Chapters jump between the "present" (i.e. the events during the My Hero Academia canon), the past (flashbacks to Himiko and Izuku's childhood), and the future.
- Badass Boast:Izuku: [after no-selling Todoroki's glacier attack] You know, I always wondered why people never used their strongest attack first. Now I realize. Once you miss... there's nowhere else to go but down. ["You Say Run" plays]
- Bilingual Bonus: Izuku and Himiko read a book called La Verda Koro, which means The Green Heart in Esperanto. Crosses over with Mythology Gag; according to ZUN, some of the books in the Scarlet Devil Mansion are in Esperanto.
- "Blackmail" Is Such an Ugly Word:Himiko: Well, it's not stalking. I'm just following him to find the right time to introduce myself.
- Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: It isn't clear what exactly happened when Marisa tried to attack Yukari, but she ended up unconscious, injured, and on top of Alice's bed, for some reason.
- Cast Full of Gay: Given that this is a Touhou fanfiction with a focus on romance, this was kind of a given.
- Harmless Freezing: Discussed and Double Subverted. Shoto mentions that freezing is very harmful, but Izuku simply shrugs it off, saying that he's felt worse.
- Heh Heh, You Said "X": The narration does this twice, first when describing "Yukari's train of thought"note , and again when describing the malice in Alice's voice.
- Holy Burns Evil: As per Touhou canon, silvered weapons are very effective against vampires. In addition, Izuku's Blackwhip Quirk is destroyed by Stain's silvered sword.
- Friendly Neighborhood Vampire: Zig-zagged.
- Despite being generally affable, Remilia and Flandre do regularly eat humans.
- Enforced by Yukari on Himiko in order to uphold The Masquerade.
- Lilith, Izuku and Himiko's daughter, is a straight example.
- Immortality Begins at Twenty: Crossed with Really 700 Years Old, it's a given for Touhou, and applies to the majority of Youkai and Sakuya Izayoi.
- Interspecies Romance: A lot of them.
- Izuku Midoriya (human) and Himiko Scarlet (vampire)
- Reimu Hakurei (human) and Yukari Yakumo (some kind of Youkai)
- Marisa Kirisame (human)note and Alice Margatroid (magician)
- Sakuya Izayoi (human, probably) and Remilia Scarlet (vampire)
- In the future sections, Lilith (vampire) and Hotori (human).
- Like an Old Married Couple: Reimu names this trope when describing Alice and Marisa's bickering.
- Like Brother and Sister: Izuku had this kind of relationship with Reimu and Marisa.
- My Significance Sense Is Tingling: Remilia's Winds of Destiny, Change! powers reacted when she first came across Izuku.
- Mythology Gag: When describing being un-personed by Keine Kamishirasawa, Sakuya said that she had tea with Rin Satsuki. When Izuku asked who she was, Sakuya said that he didn't really need to know.
- Original Character: Lilith Scarlet, Izuku and Himiko's daughter.
- Our Vampires Are Different: And how. They can't make more by turning other people, just through reproduction. They have some of the standard Dracula vampire weaknesses; sunlightnote , inability to cross running water, garlic, and holy symbols. There's also some weirder ones from Touhou canon, like being burned by roasted soybeans.
- Pro-Human Transhuman: Lilith, who is training to become (or already is?) an underground hero.
- Related in the Adaptation: Himiko Toga is now Himiko Scarlet, daughter of Remilia Scarlet.
- So Proud of You: Sakuya tells Izuku this in a note after he defeats Stain.
- Shout-Out:Reimu: How bad? Like on a scale from... annoying red mist to... the moon will impact with the earth in three days, how bad is it?
- Time Stands Still: Sakuya's power as per Touhou canon.
- Tsundere: Reimu Hakurei is a Type A, while Alice Margatroid is a Type B.
- Virtual Soundtrack: Spell card declarations contain links to related songs.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Reimu and Marisa's reaction to letting Himiko out of Gensokyo and allowing her to pursue Izuku. They don't believe her (true) statements about Himiko being harmless and just wanting to be reunited with a close friend.
