Fanfic / Scattered to the Winds

Go To

Scattered to the Winds is a DuckTales (2017) Alternate Universe Fic by ancailleach.

With the disappearance of Donald, Della, and Scrooge, canon gets thrown out the window when the triplets are separated and raised by different people. This Fan Fiction delves into a lot of different consequences when someone as important as Scrooge disappears and all the world building that comes with it.

In the midst of an argument, Donald, Della, and Scrooge manage to get stranded on the moon, leaving the triplets behind. Enemies are quick to swoop in on the mansion, splitting up the triplets and absconding with Webby just as she'd arrived, leading to a very different experience for all of them. Louie is stolen by Goldie as a souvenir of Scrooge, Dewey and Launchpad end up with the Sky Pirates, Huey is looked after by Fethry and Gyro who uses funding from Mark Beaks to try and find the other two triplets, and Webby is raised by Magica deSpell (although really, by Lena) to make use of for some dark purpose.

Scatted to the Winds provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Jerkass: Dewey took a level in this with everyone after Gyro, in an attempt to get Dewey back, blew up the Sky Pirates ships- with most pirates missing or dead- and leaving him with only Peg Leg Meg as guardian looking over him.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Glomgold gets a good dose of this when Scrooge gets lost in space, even worse is that he after years of trying to 'one-up' Scrooge, it wasn't him who killed him. He realized too late in life that his obsession with Scrooge didn't give him squat in life except people who didn't care what happened to him and a meaningless title...
  • Cassandra Truth: Violet doesn't believe Louie when he tells her he's living with Flintheart Glomgold because she knows Louie lives in a condo and thinks Glomgold lives in a mansion.
  • Death by Adaptation: Magica has Lena kill Mrs Beakley during the initial raid on Scrooge's mansion before taking Webby's egg, and Launchpad is accidentally killed by Boyd when Gyro orders the robot to destroy the plane Launchpad was in.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: When Gyro finally manages to track Dewey and Louie, they're both coincidently at Glomgold's shack at the time- Dewey's only there to hold Glomgold hostage for money while Louie's there because he called them over to his place. Comically, Gyro comes to the conclusion that Glomgold must have been the one to kidnap them in revenge while we know that Louie only tolerates him because of the scams he lets them get away with and Dewey only thinks of him as a next-week meal ticket.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Goldie might be a con artist with no qualms about abducting Louie but she won't kill Flintheart Glomgold even if doing so would enable her to inherit 82 billion dollars.
  • Flashback Echo: Unfortunately, Dewey starts to show signs after he rides in a plane with Peg Leg Meg because the last time he rode in one, Gyro ended up shooting it down killing or leaving most of the pirates missing in action. Thankfully Meg was able to calm him down before it turned into a Freak Out.
  • Gilded Cage: In fear of Huey getting kidnapped like his brothers, Gyro sent him to live with Fethry as means to protect him at the bottom of the sea. He's been there for the past ten years much to Huey's irritation.
  • Happily Adopted: Huey and Dewey are aware that Fethry and Launchpad aren't their biological parents (it's unclear if Louie and Webby are similarly aware), but all four love their parents.
  • I Own This Town: Glomgold claims that, while Ma Beagle has the deed to Beagleburg, he practically owns the city nowadays because he's "got most of the property rights for individual buildings".
  • Jurisdiction Friction: One of Fethry's reasons for not reporting Dewey to the Beagleburg police is that they have no jurisdiction over crimes that took place in South Africa.
  • Morality Pet: Launchpad invokes this in Dewey by making him a huge fan of Dark Wing Duck as being raised by pirates doesn't do a thing for good morals. Even now, you can see Dewey use the hero as a positive example in his head. Launchpad himself, can even be seen as an example of this as he's always encouraging Dewey to be good and keep his innocence for as long as possible and Dewey clearly looks up to him a ton.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Gyro's attempt to 'rescue' Dewey and Louie results in him accidentally killing most of the Sky Pirates, including Launchpad.
  • On One Condition: Thanks to Glomgold's Villain Decay and realizing how nobody cared about him. He becomes so lonely he's willing to give his entire fortune to Louie as long as he spent a year bonding with him in an attempt that Louie remember him fondly when he passes.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: At Scrooge's disappearance into space both his arch-enemies Magica and Glomgold have felt upset at the hollow victory wishing they had killed him instead. However, they both took different drastic approaches to this news.
    • Glomgold underwent Villain Decay and regretted how his obsession with beating Scrooge left him with no one caring whether he lived or died. He even offered to make Louie heir to his entire fortune if he just spent a year with him in order to have a real chance to bond with someone.
    • Unsurprisingly, Magica took the opposite approach deciding that even if Scrooge was lost to space she'll have her revenge in a different way. By kidnapping Webby (who she thought was Scrooge's offspring) and using her do her evil bidding and destroy the rest of the McDuck family.
  • Point of Divergence: Scrooge's absence has led to a bunch of various changes around.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: In order to make Louie agree to play along with Flintheart's wish, Goldie points out "82. Billion. Dollars.".
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: Louie tries this trick on Goldie and Glomgold often. Thanks to over use though, ever since he was six, it doesn't work on her. Glomgold is a different case but luckily for him Goldie's always there to warn him off.
  • Raised by Rival: Thanks to Scrooge, Della, and Donald being stranded on the moon, the triplets (and Webby) are separated and raised by someone else, and not all of them were nice.
    • Scrooge's rival Goldie stole Louie's egg originally as a "souvenir" to remember Scrooge by while he was gone. Later on, she becomes really attached to Louie and decides to raise him for herself.
    • Magica also took her chances on raising Webby after she mistook her for being one of Scrooge's offspring. Still wanting revenge on Scrooge, she decided to kidnap and raise his own family to hate them and do her bidding.
  • Revenge Through Corruption: What Magica attempts to do with Webby against the McDuck family not knowing Webby's actually Mrs. Beasley's grand daughter not Scrooge's offspring.
  • Spirit Advisor: It’s eventually revealed that Lena has made contact with Mrs Beakley's spirit, and is working to subtly undermine Magica's influence on Webby.
  • Trauma Button: Despite being raised by the Sky Pirates his whole life so far, it's no surprise when he starts getting panic attacks everytime he rides a plane now because his last time he was on a ship the Sky Pirates were being blown up by Gyro. Traumatizing stuff like that doesn't just go away, especially since it happened so recently.
  • Vice City: ...Well how did you expect the city to turn out when the Beagle Boys are running the city? I'll give you a hint, it's now known for being the city with the highest crime rate in the country.
  • Villain Decay: Glomgold goes through this because as turns out being a villain just isn't as much fun when your arch-enemy isn't there to face you anymore. Glomgold even mentioned how much he regrets obsessing over Scrooge seeing as literally no one cares whether he lives or dies now.
