Fanfic / Monkey and Butterfly

Go To

A crossover between One Piece and Star vs. the Forces of Evil by Emma Iveli.

When Star Butterfly was 6, she stole a pair of dimensional scissors and ended up in what is called the Blue Dimension. There she met a boy named Monkey D. Luffy.

8 years later, Star is sent to earth, however she still goes on adventures with Luffy who is now her sworn brother and her new friend Marco Diaz. Of course things are going to be insane fighting monsters, pirates and other evils of the universe.

Fanfic can be read here: Monkey and Butterfly (AO3 Version).

This fanfic contains examples of:

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Pony Head to Ace, which shouldn't be too surprising.
  • Accidental Misnaming: Luffy of course, calling Moon "Queen Mom", one point calling Tom "Shawn", he calls Mina Loveberry "Serena Lovecherry" and "Lita Lovemelon" and calls Tad "Chad".
  • Actor Allusion: Luffy thought Tom's name was Shawn.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Luffy, Ace and Sabo are very protective of Star and of course will protect her no matter what.
  • Blatant Lies: River when he claims that he doesn't know what Sabo's job is to Moon.
  • Brick Joke: In chapter 49, Sabo tells Ace that after everything he did to Jimbei, Koala wants to punch him next time she sees him. 6 Chapter later she does so, though she almost forgets to due Star's kidnapping
  • The Cameo: Canon!Star briefly appears in Chapter 50 as the chapter takes place during that math class and shows what happened when she got to the universe in the time loop.
  • Chekhov's Gun: at the end of chapter 50, Janna asked Glossaryck to teach her a memory erasing spell. This ends up becoming important in chapter 55, where she becomes key in the Star rescue mission by erasing the memories of the Marines and the Celestial Dragon so they don't get in trouble.
  • Deadly Euphemism: A downplayed example, it's clear that River wouldn't kill them but rather beat them up when he says that he would give Sabo's parents "A piece of his mind"
  • Early-Bird Cameo:
    • Zoro (adept unnamed) appears in chapter 11 thanks to a sneeze cut.
    • Chapter 12 involves Star, Luffy and Marco meeting Law and towards the end of the chapter Bepo.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: As a reward for clearing her trial, Hekapoo gives Marco a devil fruit in addition to his dimensional scissors, telling him it's his choice to eat it if he wants. He does so during Ludo's takeover and gains the ability to teleport and make portals.
  • Family of Choice: It's not just Star, Luffy, Ace and Sabo becoming siblings, but it's clear that Garp sees Star as his granddaughter while River and Moon sees Luffy, Ace and Sabo as their sons. Sabo and Ace have also accepted Marco as part of the family.
  • Everyone Has Standards: After realizing that Sabo is abused, River wants to find Sabo's parents and "give them a piece of his mind". Moon is against it as it might seem like he's going to attack random people, but River points out that they would more likely cheer him on for beating up child abusers. Moon is still against the idea however...
  • Foreshadowing:
    • A couple about about River before the reveal about both his knowledge about the Blue Dimension and his hunting trips
      • During the flashback to the events of Romance Dawn, Star mentions her dad is a real man and he does is sit on his throne all day. It cuts back to the present where Star and Luffy are laughing hysterically about what she said.
      • Star lists off her dad as one of the people who tried to teach Luffy that directions don't work the way like he thinks, the next chapter it's revealed that that he's very much aware that the boys aren't from Mewni.
    • There's two instances that hint at Luffy being a blind spot in Glossaryck's future sight
      • Glossaryck states he wasn't expecting Luffy to be locked in Star's closet.
      • Glossaryck is confused at many points during chapter 28 and implies (and later outright confirms) that he foresaw canon events instead of what happens
    • In chapter 56 Ruberiot is strangely upset that Luffy, Ace and Sabo are from the Blue Dimension, even mentioning debts for some reason. It's later revealed that it was popular to bet which dimension they're from.
  • Hawaiian-Shirted Tourist: Star disguises Ace and Sabo in the get up when visiting Baterilla.
  • Hilarious in Flashback: During Romance Dawn flashback, Star points that her father is a real man despite sitting on his throne all day. While it's not shown until later, Star and Luffy are very much aware of it when retelling the story to Marco.
  • Hope Spot: It takes the canon one of Star destroying Marco's cage and makes it worse, as once it regenerates not only is Marco still in the cage, but Luffy entered it when it was destroyed and was still in it when regenerated, meaning Toffee has two hostages instead of one.
  • I Always Wanted to Say That: Gregor (a member of the blue freedom pirates) has a list of these. Two of them are "It's quiet... too quiet" and "Go on! I'll hold off this crazy cat army!"
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Luffy with the possessed Marco in chapter 41.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • Rafael and Angie still end up in a hot spring wearing only their fanny packs despite their trip to Mewni being much different than canon.
    • Sabo still joins the revolutionary army and teams up with Koala, though as a pirate captain and much later than canon.
    • Much of what happened to Luffy when visiting Amazon Lily still happens.
    • The End result of Wand to Wand is Star learning Warnicorn Stampede despite everything leading up to her learning it being much different than canon.
    • The first, second and fourth verses of Star's princess song is the same.
    • The Book of Spells still gets burned with Glossaryck.
    • Toffee still dies in Star and Ludo's hands.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Dadan and her bandits after discovering that Star really is a princess from another dimension.
  • Internal Reveal: Moon finally learns the truth about Luffy, Ace and Sabo.
  • Ironic Echo: A rather interesting variation, when Star finds out Ludo found her he replies "Wouldn't you like to know." with Star replying "Yeah, that's why I asked." the conversation repeated later in the chapter this time with Ludo asking about Ace's new powers.
  • Literal Metaphor: Sabo's explanation on Mewberty
Sabo: You see Marco Mewberty is a time in a Princess of Mewni's life where she temporally transforms into a boy crazy monster.
    Marco: Is that a...
    Sabo: It's not a metaphor.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Chapter 56 reveals that Queen Moon was one of the few people in Mewni to not know or figure out that Luffy, Ace and Sabo were not from Mewni.
  • Mama Bear: After discovering that Sabo's mother fretted over another boy while her own son was injured, Moon is okay with River giving Sabo's parents "A piece of his mind".
  • Mythology Gag: In chapter 14 Star creates a map showing the marines as red dots and an unknown faction as yellow dots referencing One Piece: Pirate Warriors
  • No Sense of Direction: Played with, as with canon Luffy thinks that it will get colder if you go north however despite this, he somehow knows his way around Quest Buy to the extent that Star knows to call him if they're going to make a trip.
  • Must Have Caffeine: The Blue Freedom Pirates loses its coffee supply and the majority of the crew mutinies over it, though a small group remaining loyal to Sabo does put a stop to it, four of them thankfully avert this trope.
  • Naked People Are Funny: A bounty hunter steals Ace's pants leaving him naked.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • Luffy's first time time going to Echo Creek Academy which resulted in him eating all the food from the cafeteria, pulling the fire alarm and getting into a fight with Miss Skullnick thinking she was working for Ludo... which was before she became a troll...
    • Tom tried to teach Luffy that his method of using directions is wrong. It's later revealed that the end result was Tom blowing up at Luffy.
    • According to Glossaryck a previous princess lost a previous version of the magic book in a bet.
    • The Johansen Monster Massacre Reenactment of 5 years ago. Little is known about it other than Lump did something to a spear and the siblings agreed never speak about it again.
    • The Blue Freedom Pirates once faced off against a crazy cat army...
  • "Not Making This Up" Disclaimer:
    • One about Glossaryck paraphrasing Charles Manson.
    • One about Meat Cakes being a thing (A meat loaf like cake cake over mashed potato frosting)
  • Not So Above It All: Lekemt of all uh... goats, betted on which dimension Luffy, Sabo and Ace were from.
  • Odd Friendship: Between Luffy and the Quest Buy Sloths. Whenever one sees Luffy they always greet him with a "Hey Luffy!" which he responds with a "Hey!". They also know if he gets into a fight with someone to always bill the other guy. Luffy also pays for any food he takes from the store.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Tom after discovering that Sabo knew the truth about the Blood Moon Ball.
    • Marco, Sabo and many members of the Blue Freedom pirates learning it was Toffee who kidnapped Marco.
    • Moon upon finding out Mina is on Earth.
    • Star and Marco's reaction to Janna stealing Luffy's hat.
  • One-Steve Limit: Marco Diaz and Marco the Phoenix. Both Ace and Narration decided to call the latter "Phoenix" due to knowing Marco Diaz for longer.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Glossaryck is worried about Luffy's ability to change fate that not only is he visibly worried but much to the shock of Sean he willingly makes an appointment at the Bureaucracy of Magic to speak to Hekapoo.
  • Papa Wolf: River admits to wanting to give Sabo's parents a piece of his mind after realizing his parents were abusive.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Star uses Radiant Shadow Transform to disguise Ace and Sabo, however the marines have their wanted posters on hand so it doesn't work.
  • Points Of Divergence: Oh so many...
    • As revealed in Chapter 25, thanks to Star saving Ace and Luffy from Blue Jam before the fire, they're able to make sure that Sabo never loses his memory instead coming to live with Star in the palace for nearly a year. This allows him to become a pirate when he grows up.
    • Star learns about her father's secret hunting trip much earlier than canon. This also leads to the Diazes not going through the Forest of Certain Death during their trip to Mewni.
    • Star knows what puberty is thanks to Garp including her on the Talk.
    • Star, Sabo, Ace and Luffy come up with a plan to deal with Mewberty, which involves dumping her in High Town. This also leads to Janna keeping the magic book, reading Eclipsa's chapter and somehow gaining magic.
    • The events of Pixtopia never happen due to Star having an unlimited family plan.
    • Luffy ends up meeting Law much earlier than canon.
    • The events of Royal Pain don't happen as instead of going to the Diaz's house, River decides to instead visit Luffy.
    • During the events of Mewnipendance Day, Sabo tells Marco about Toffee killing Comet. After getting kidnaped by Toffee and learning his identity Marco is left terrified instead of mocking him and acting defiant.
    • When Star destroys the police car, thanks to a criminal history, instead of freaking out and trying to hide from the cops instead go stay with Luffy until the heat dies down.
    • Moon is made aware of Mina being on Earth and talks her down from taking over in Starstruck.
    • In Wand to Wand Star deicides to ask Luffy for ideas in how to get Glossaryck out the donut box. He comes up with getting Garp to open the box. Ludo still attacks them, but the battle happens on Garp's ship. Not only that but Luffy ends up saving Star from Ludo instead of tripping over the donut box.
    • In Bon Bon the Birthday Clown, Ludo doesn't steal the book.
    • Due to the fact that the book was never stolen, Star is never evaluated.
    • In chapters 44/45 Marco ends up convincing Reiju to leave Germa 66.
    • Instead of shutting down, Pony Head buys the Bounce Lounge.
    • Due to her kidnapping at the hands of Celestial Dragon, Star uses the third verse of her Princess Song to confess to her mother about the truth of Luffy, Ace and Sabo's origins.
  • Power Incontinence: After eating the Space-Space Fruit Marco experiences several difficulties using his new powers, often accidentally teleporting mid-sentence and upside-down.
  • A Rare Sentence:
    • Ace gets one in chapter 22:
Ace: All right, let's get inside and save Marco from his beard. (Beat) Which is not the weirdest thing I said this week…
    • Gregor (a member of the Blue Freedom Pirates) not only said "Go on! I'll hold off this crazy cat army!" but it was on a list of things he always wanted to say.
  • Secret-Keeper: It's shown that while Moon in the dark that Luffy, Ace and Sabo are from the Blue Dimension, River is very much aware of where they're from. They and Star keep the secret of his hunting trips as well.

    • The villain of chapter 12 quotes Thanos in Avengers: Age of Ultron while putting on her sea stone gauntlet.
    • The shirt that Star created for Sandersonia is described as "Comfy and easy to wear"
      • There's another reference in chapter 22 where Star realizes that Fire-Types are strong against Hair-Types.
    • The narration says that the paper clip museum in terms of boring field trip is second only a box factory
    • In chapter 25 When Tom sees Sabo, he completely freezes up claiming if he doesn't move then Sabo won't be able to see him, Marco corrects him by saying he's pretty sure he's thinking of a T-Rex

    • Chapter 41 The Possessed Marco says "There is no Marco only Zuul"
    • Naysaya's voice is compared to Stewie Griffin
      • Also there's a "wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube man" at the assassins guild.
    • Luffy says that Hekapoo's dimension runs on "wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff"
    • This universe's punchline to the Chicken joke is "Because someone called him Marty McFly"
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Played for Drama, Star becomes this after her kidnapping, while she doesn't say the S or F words she does engage in what the other characters call "Casual Swearing". Before then she only swore when she was extremely upset so it's clear that she's dealing with the trauma of her kidnapping.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: River and Garp have a Comically Lopsided Rivalry. River takes umbrage with Garp's so-called "parenting" while Garp resents the fact that his grandkids like River more than they do him. The reason it's lopsided is because even on his day, River is no physical match for Garp.
  • Sneeze Cut: After hearing Luffy's idea what it takes to be a hero, Marco comments that he doesn't think that anyone else thinks that way about heroes. It immediately cuts to someone implied to be Zoro sneezing.
  • Spiritual Antithesis: Has one in Emma's later story My Princess Academia in how the story deals with Mewberity. In this one Star, Luffy, Ace and Sabo plan out to just have Star cause chaos in High Town. However in the other story, there is a plan for dealing with in a controlled environment allowing Star to get it out her system without much problem... until it goes horribly wrong.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: In chapter 30, the phrase "Nothing good ever came from a clown approaching people saying stuff like that!" is uttered by both Marco and a police officer involving a clown approaching Star, Luffy and Marco and saying "Hi there kids!"
  • Synchronous Episodes: Chapters 44 and 45. In Chapter 44 Glossaryck has a meeting with Hekapoo and convinces Star to have a Blue Dimension adventure at the same time. Chapter 45 deals with said adventure at the Germa Kingdom.

  • Transformation of the Possessed: Referenced, in order to explain Ace's powers to Moon, they tell her that he was possessed by a fire spirit that permanently altered his body.

  • Wham Episode:
    • Chapter 10 Janna somehow gained magic from reading Eclipsa's chapter
    • Chapter 55: Ooh boy what starts out as a normal Blue Dimension Adventure takes a turn for the horrifying when Star gets kidnapped by a Celestial Dragon, Marco gets shot (thankfully just grazed), they form a rescue team consisting of Ace, Sabo, Kolala, Hancock and Janna to rescue her. During the fight Luffy actually uses the wand! But then he gets shot by a Sea Stone bullet. Star dips down to save him and trounce the Celestial Dragon. Janna erases the memories of the Celestial Dragon and the Marines escorting him and Star is left traumatized and decides it's time to her mother the truth. Oh and Star uses magic to remove the Boa Sisters' Hoof of the Dragon...
  • Wham Line: From Chapter 55
