You are all... Children of Hades

In this world, the Gods have come down seeking excitement and fun. In exchange for the brave swearing their loyalty to a god or goddess, that god or goddess will give that person their "Falna", or blessing to fight monsters in the massive Dungeon beneath the city of Orario. The Adventurers that gather under that god or goddess are that deity's "Familia".

One such Familia in the city of Orario is the Hades Familia. A fairly recent Familia and one only of medium size, you would expect the Familia of the God of the Underworld to be more popular, But as many adventurers looking to join find out, Hades is not what they expect.

Despite being the god of the Underworld, and having a rather intense air about him to match, Hades is a surprisingly nice guy. Often described as "the chill of the underworld with a warm center," he takes in Adventurers that no other Familia will accept, were abandoned by their Familia, and even orphans off the street, and gives them food, a place to live, and a purpose. He may be pretty intimidating at first, but beneath his constant frown and glare, Hades is a rather nurturing guy with a love of children, animals (particularly cats), and a dislike for the mistreatment of women.

Labeled "Mr. Mom God" by those outside of his Familia, he is a diligent God who is always looking out for the well-being of his "children", cooking breakfast, cleaning the dormitory, and taking odd jobs around Orario to help raise funds. Heck, he can frequently be found wearing an apron and bandanna while shopping for groceries at the nearest market. As a result, the members of his Familia frequently refer to him as Father, Dad, Pops e.t.c.

But enough about him, this tale is about those very children who've sworn their fealty to him, and our tale begins when Tessa Thompson, a waitress at a cafe in Daedalus Street, encounters (well crashes into a strange Cat Person while on the way to work. Much to her surprise, the strange newcomer was not only a complete amnesiac (not even knowing how to speak, read, or write) but was also completely naked. Unsure of what to do with her, Tessa takes the girl back to her apartment she shares with her brother Ian Moone, where the amnesiac girl ends up naming herself Rooster Ringabelle since they didn't know what else to call her.

Thus the story of the Children of Hades begins.

Children of Hades is an original Danmachi fan fic written by Cyberweasel89. Set several years prior to the canon events of the original novels, it features an entire cast of user-created OCs and an entirely original story. At the time of this writing it is still in a form of Development Hell in which the author is still accepting OC submissions and is trying to fit them all in the story, but the author has assured readers that things are moving along and that the story is far from abandoned.

Tropes associated with the series:

  • All There in the Manual: The cast have extensive profiles. Extensive.
  • An Adventurer Is You: While the original series had no such conventions, each character is given a class under their character profile for identification purposes (Rooster for example, is a Magic Knight). In addition, each race (aside from Humans) specializes in a few areas (i.e. War Tigers and Boaz have high strength), but don't expect too much Min-Maxing given the quirky nature of the Hades Familia.
  • Armor and Magic Don't Mix: Played with. While spellcasters usually don't wear armor, they usually do so purely because a spellcaster isn't a frontline fighter and thus any heavy armor would be a hindrance when they're trying to keep their distance to cast. But the characters who do wear armor show that it in no way affects their own spells, since warriors always get at least one spell at the very least.
  • Armor Is Useless/Shields Are Useless: Averted. While they do break and get damaged with use, they nearly always end up saving their user's life.
    • Instant Armor: Also averted. Characters are shown to need time to don and doff their armor.
  • Armored Villains, Unarmored Heroes: Completely averted. Even the main heroine prefers full-body light armor. Who wears it and who doesn't is entirely up to the Adventurer's build and preference.
    • Helmets Are Hardly Heroic: Again, completely averted. While only a few of the cast wear helmets, they do so regardless of heroism. One of them is the main heroine.
  • Badass Crew: The Hades Familia, as with every major Familia, is this. All of them are (usually) extremely competent in combat but are close enough that they consider each other family.
  • Bag of Holding: Like the source material, averted. That's why Adventurers have Supporters to carry their stuff for them.
  • Calling Your Attacks: All part of the in-world Magical Incantation system. Bonus points for Rooster screaming "Tu fue, ego eris... Relay!" while shooting the enemy's own magic back at them, though.
  • Character Development: It's a world where everything is character-driven. This is to be expected.
  • Dump Stat: Most of the characters specialize in dodging or blocking, rarely both, leading to either Agility or Endurance being a dump stat. There are exceptions, though.
  • Fanservice: A staple of the author's storytelling, though she tries to be equal-opportunity about it.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: It's implied to have happened to each member of the Hades Familia over time, but we see it first-hand with new recruits Rooster, Ian, Tessa, Ray, and later Leon.
  • A Friend in Need: It's shown that any single one of the Hades Familia can call on any other member to help them when needed.
  • Healing Potion: Unlike in most RPG games, potions are actually very effective in the Danmachi world. Mana Potions and Panaceas also exist.
  • Interspecies Romance: All current Official Couple and Ship Tease pairings seem to be heading this way.
  • Linear Warriors, Quadratic Wizards: Completely averted. The spellcasters of the Veteran Squad are usually Squishy Wizards who can't stand up to a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown but instead cast spells at a distance, while the warrior-types are front-line fighters who can usually dish out and/or take a serious beating. It helps that each warrior-class Adventurer gets a single spell.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Chientropes, Werewolves, Boaz (people with the traits of a boar), Cat People e.t.c., as per the original series.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: Every member of the main cast is planned to get these. More than once.
  • Min-Maxing: Generally subverted. Hades, in fact, specifically looks for Adventurers who go against the grain because they usually won't get accepted by any other Familia.
  • Most Fanfic Writers Are Fans: If it's not obvious from the Infodump in the manual, the author knows quite a bit about the source material. Yikes.
  • Most Fanfic Writers Are Girls: A minor case of Samus Is a Girl and Unsettling Gender-Reveal considering the Fanservice and World of Buxom nature of the story.
  • No Hero Discount: Despite the fact that they get most of their equipment from within the Familia, Frobo, Durkon, Elga, Pyrenee, and Scarlett all charge an appropriate amount of Valis along with required materials for the goods. Justified in that they want the newer members to earn their way to the top and also serves as a Drama-Preserving Handicap.
  • Original Generation: Practically every character in the story is completely original as is the plot due to the fact that it takes place several years before the canon events of the novels. As a result, while the locales are recognizable, the characters won't be.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: The Hades Familia operates on this trope, as very nearly every member is quirky and weird, going against expectations as a result of their race, class, ideology e.t.c. Even the eponymous god himself is a sweetheart despite his intimidating looks.
  • RPG Mechanics 'Verse: As per the source material.
  • Shout-Out: Everywhere to everything, from pop culture to mythology to memes.
  • Square Race, Round Class: Most of the cast follows this. Justified in that these are the kind of people Hades looks for, since only he can see the true merits of people others reject for not Min-Maxing.
  • Sticks to the Back: Generally averted. Characters are mentioned having straps and sheaths for their equipment.
  • Stereotype Flip: See "Square Race, Round Class." It's because other Familias scoffed at and rejected the idea of a Dark Elf being a knight or a Pallum being a blacksmith despite their true merits that they wound up in the Hades Familia.
  • Subverted Trope: As mentioned before, everything about the Hades Familia is this, with Hades himself being a Nice Guy with a Face of a Thug, Frobo Smiles as a pallum who wants to be a Blacksmith e.t.c.
  • Team Chef: Both Hades, Zorim, and Jersey are stated to cook the food served in the Underworld Dormitory's restaurant, with Sunny helping out as well. Hades's food tends to cross over into Impossibly Delicious Food territory, while Zorim himself openly boasts he's a chef before an Adventurer, and has even authored a published cookbook. Jersey tends to be more of a Camp Cook in the dungeon, but she's no slouch herself.
  • Troperiffic: The author is a troper. This is to be expected, although she prefers to play with, subvert, and deconstruct tropes.
  • True Companions: You mess with one child of Hades, you mess with all of them. Even the ones who don't really get along know they can count on each other when the going gets tough.
  • World of Buxom: Taken Up To Eleven from the source material, which already used this trope liberally.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Like in the source material, broken weapons and armor are usually just replaced with better ones.
  • You All Meet in an Inn: The Hades Familia's base is a three-story (along with a basement) building. The second and third floors all contain rooms for housing Adventurers and Supporters of the Familia. The first floor is a tavern that serves food and drink to both Familia members and any visitors arriving as customers. The basement contains workshops for the Deputies. It is appropriately called the "Underworld Dormitory."
