Go To

"Welcome to Royal Roulette. Luck is a large factor of today's culture, and integrated in life itself for many people. But what about death? Do you feel special enough to let Lady Luck decide your fate? No? Well, that's unfortunate, since you don't have a choice."

—Roleplay Premise.

Royal Roulette is a Danganronpa inspired roleplay hosted by Sunny, with the help of her friend Erica. 16 Ultimates wake up in a castle, with no idea how they got there. Once they get a tour, they discover that they are stuck in a game of death, with no way out... Unless they commit murder and get away with it.

Unlike most roleplays where roleplayers submit characters they have designed, this roleplay starts with the roleplayers getting the basic information from the mods, and then molding them into a character. The roleplay is on chapter 3 and can be found here.

Florian Blumenthal

Ultimate Stop Motion Animator

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/florian.png
His hand got stabbed
Florian is very well known in stop-motion animation communities, mainly for his series Alois the Little Worm. This children’s series about a worm named Alois going through everyday things and teaches children lessons. This series is very popular among German children, but also outside of Germany among fans of stop-motion animation. Florian does have other series that are not targeted towards children, but these are not as successful. Florian’s animations are known for being very crisp and professional-looking, despite being done independently (except for his main series, which is done through a children’s television broadcaster in Germany).

  • The Ditz: Not the brightest of the students, doing things like repetedly touching a throne even after his captor said not to, leading to him getting stabbed in the hand. Played for Drama. He killed Aesook not because of any malicious intent, but because he pulled a suspicious rope without giving it a second thought.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Dislikes soda, per his profile.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: This is how his execution ends, being squeezed by Alois the Little Worm so hard his body splits in half.

Rex Rivera

Ultimate Art Critic

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rex_3.png
Dinosaur
Who’s walkin’ ovah heah? Rex Rivera walked all around Brooklyn ever since he was born. As a toddler, he had an extremely wide interest in creating art, more specifically, various paintings. He lets his imagination go wild while painting, using numerous ideas in his head. However, Rex decided to quit creating art due to a slight difference in interest. Now, he would walk all across town and look at various pieces of artwork made by other people. He gained popularity online by leaving long reviews about said piece, whether it would be complimenting it, or criticizing it. He eventually gained a fanbase as well as his fair share of haters, who often depicts Rex as a controversial icon in the art community. Despite all of that, Rex had expanded his reviews to a larger variety. Not only would he review paintings, sketches, and sculptures, he would also leave reviews on movies, photography, and even writing. He claims that anything created by the hands of a human is considered art. A very odd claim, but it comes to show that Rex deeply cares about what other people make, no matter how blunt his reviews appear to be.

  • The Big Guy: Stands at 6'5 and is the tallest character. Besides John, of course.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Dislikes peas, according to his profile.
  • Eye Scream: Loses his eye in chapter 2 trying to kill the Overseer.
  • Off with His Head!: How he was murdered, decapitated by Bev in the arcade.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Attempts to kill the Overseer in chapter 2 during the motive announcement to avenge Vanna, consequences be damned.
  • Technicolor Eyes: Has red eyes. Or had. Now he has one.
  • Tragic Keepsake: He and Luna share Vanna's mask that was left behind - the only memento left of her.
  • Trauma Conga Line: The killing game has not been kind to Rex. His roommate and best friend is executed as the culprit of the first murder, he loses an eye and becomes temporarily wheelchair bound after trying to kill the Overseer, and sacrifices his dad to the motive in the second chapter, only to find out that he could have chosen a dead loved one instead. And then he dies in chapter 3.
  • True Companions: Vith Vanna and Luna. Until Vanna dies.

Lokapele: "I use to push others away but... I see the value of friendships now."
  • Grievous Harm with a Body: Uses her prosthetic leg to break Bev's nose after the third trial.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In a way. She volunteers for her father to die so that Yōkō would not pick anyone from Luna's family to die.
  • Massively Numbered Siblings: She's the youngest of her family, with four older and very dead brothers.
  • Official Couple: With Luna as of the end of chapter 2.

  • Youngest Child Wins: Of a twisted variety. She's the only one of her siblings not dead.

Luna Seymour

Ultimate Music Video Director

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/luna_52.png
Wallflower
Luna Seymour made a name for herself when at the age of 14 she gathered some of her friends and created a music video to one of the hit new summer songs. The video got decently popular on YouTube, and as she continued to make videos for fun, she eventually got noticed by an artist with a decent following and collaborated with them on an official music video. The video got met with critical acclaim, launching Luna into the spotlight and opening up a lot of possibilities for her. As she continued to work on videos, both with friends and as actual jobs for renowned music artists, she built up a reputation for being able to perfectly encapsulate and amplify the atmosphere of any given song. It came to no surprise when she was eventually accepted to Hope’s Peak.

  • Alliterative Name: Her birth name, Jessica Jacobson.
  • Antiquated Linguistics: Tends to avoid contractions. She has started slowly incorporating them into her speech after the first chapter, however.
  • Abusive Parents: As revealed in the third trial, her biological parents, especially her mother, were abusive towards her, both verbally and physically.
  • Bad Liar: Played for Drama. Her attempts to defend Vanna in the first trial are quickly and easily disproved by the others.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Luna is usually kind and polite, but after Bev was revealed to be Rex's killer and her assailant, and showed absolutely no remorse for their actions, she ends up punching them in the face multiple times, screaming her head off at them and expressing a disturbing desire to see them dead.
  • Break the Cutie: Thrice. Loses her friend Vanna in chapter one, bursts into tears upon hearing that her family could be in danger because of the second motive, and breaks down upon finding Rex's dead body and blames herself for his death
  • Curtains Match the Window: Has grey eyes and gray hair.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Hinted at, stating that she was sad before she was adopted. Then confirmed because her bio parents controlled her life before throwing her out.
    • Her most traumatic moment revealed she was thrust into a trial she was woefully unprepared for, mocked and physically assaulted by her mother afterwards and completely abandoned by her family.
  • Happily Adopted: She lives with her parents and best friend who adopted her.
  • Official Couple: With Lokapele as of the end of chapter 2.
  • Precision F-Strike: Drops one against the Overseer during the first trial for taunting Vanna.
    • Drops a few more in the third chapter: One towards the Overseer after they thank Rex's killer for getting rid of him, and four towards Bev after they're revealed to be Rex's killer.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's very shy and has a hard time interacting with others. However, she's slowly coming out of her shell.
  • Significant Birth Date: October 12th, the day the first Ace Attorney game released, a date befitting someone raised from birth to be a lawyer.
  • Sophisticated as Hell: Talks like this from time to time, most notably when referring to people she hates, such as the Overseer, her biological parents, and Bev.
Luna: It may be surprising, but I am indeed capable of swearing. I try not to but... that bitch absolutely deserves it.
  • The Stoic: Subverted. Luna starts off as someone calm and collected, not letting her emotions show, but as the killing game progresses, her calm demeanour progressively breaks more and more. Vanna's death particularly is a turning point for her, as she tries to start to let go of the past after being comforted by Rex. Afterwards, she slowly starts being more and more expressive. As of the end of chapter 3 she doesn't bother with hiding her emotions anymore, being visibly enraged at Bev for their murder of Rex and expressing her frustrations when talking with others.
  • Tragic Keepsake: She and Rex share Vanna's mask that was left behind - the only memento left of her.
    • With Rex now gone, his hoodie is one for Luna.
  • Trauma Conga Line: The killing game has certainly taken a toll on Luna. Her friend Vanna is revealed to be the killer in the first trial, her family ended up being threatened because of the second chapter motive and then right after that her best friend Rex lost an eye trying to kill the Overseer, she gets attacked and almost killed by Bev, and then when she returns to consciousness one of the first things she sees is Rex's dead body.
  • True Companions: With Vanna and Rex. Until Vanna dies.
  • The Unfavorite: In her backstory, she was the unfavorite child while her bio brother was the favorite. She was treated awfully by her parents, while her brother was treated like a saint. Luna's mother doesn't even bother to hide it, referring to her son as her baby and then immediately calling Luna a moron.

Lupita Alba

Ultimate Cat Whisperer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lupita.png
NYA NYA NYA NYA
Hailing from a small town in the western United States, the young Lupita Alba has made a name for herself as a cat whisperer. From taming feral cat colonies to aiding pet owners with temperamental felines, her abilities as communicating and soothing cats feels almost supernatural. When you ask her about how she achieved so much talent, however, Lupita responds “I don’t know— they seem to just be drawn to me. I’ve always considered myself more of a dog person, actually.”

  • Animal Lover: She loves dogs and cats, albeit she likes dogs more than cats.
  • Animal Talk: She's called a cat whisperer and talks to cats. Cats can't talk to her but they do understand her.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She is one of the nicest students. After HELLF!R3 nearly drowned in the pool, Lupita threatened to kill the killer if the execution didn't deal with them.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: In an unusual way, in that she has heterochromia and each eye color is seen in her hair as well.

  • Ship Tease: With HELLF!R3.

Maaya Sakura

Ultimate Dream Interpreter

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maaya.png
Chill
Perhaps Maaya Sakura isn’t held in critical acclaim, but anybody who knows her name would know how skilled she is in the art of interpreting dreams. While her methods are… unorthodox, to say the least, all her known clients have reported how they felt as though they discovered something new about themselves after talking to her about their dreams. One session with dream interpreter Maaya, according to witnesses, is enough to help you learn about your true, repressed desires, fears, and hopes. In fact, there’s even a rumor her abilities led to a crime being solved. The girl herself has proved elusive until now, however, from what’s assumed to be a deep love of privacy.

Vanna Latte

Ultimate Winemaker

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vanna_8.png
Has pressing concerns
Vanna wasn't always the master mixologist she is now, but her little family business began growing as their bar, The Bronze Bounty, appeared on a showcase on the famous show, "Small Sales, Master Meals." Soon after, the bar went big, and with such, the Latte family needed more hands to help deal with the business, and Vanna began working with them. More tv shows took notice of her work, and it led to the bar becoming a tourist destination. Her fame sky-rocketed in the alcohol industry fast, and eventually, she was granted her own show, called "Drink Your Desires," where she taught the world how to make beverages themselves. This show featured many guests trying her drinks, and it also showed off several masterful tricks in making wine to the audience. Her dreams have came true in several ways, and it's clear that she's going no where except for up from here.

  • Domino Mask: She wore one of these all the time.
  • Forgotten Fallen Friend: Defied. Rex and Luna constantly talk about her, and other students have mentioned her.
  • Stupid Good: Her motive behind killing Adelia was that everyone would be let out of the killing game at the expense of both Vanna and her victim's lives if Vanna was able to get away with murder, which she wasn't able to do.

Yōkō Myōjō

Ultimate Viral Star | Ultimate Vigilante

She’s affectionately called The Algorithm Queen by her fans, and well-known for her enthusiasm and charm.

  • Abusive Parents: Implied during the chapter 2 investigation, claming that her dead father "deserved everything that happened to him." Confirmed after she reveales her true talent.
Yōkō: I'm selective in my kills, usually, but quite frankly that went out of the window when my sister was threatened. I've killed for her before, and I would do it again. My father deserved exactly what was coming to him, and so did all the rest of those scumbag abusers."
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She killed her own abusive father in the past, supposedly after her little sister was threatened.

  • Gadgeteer Genius: Calls herself a mechanic after she is found guilty, and her m.o. seems to be executing people in elaborate traps.

  • Pet the Dog: A small example. Promises to not pick HELLF!R3's loved ones to be executed, as they are children that are victims of abuse.
  • Skewed Priorities: Her last words before being executed are a request to upload her execution online so she can earn ad revenue.
  • Technicolor Eyes: Has red eyes.

Beverly "Bev" Ochoa

Popular for traveling all over the world, making friends with all kinds of people with different cultures, it's hard not to like Bev! They've simply got a way with words that easily attracts people from the world over to them, and with their fun personality and their knowledge of many languages, it's no surprise that Hope's Peak Academy has acknowledged them for their unique skills!

  • A God Am I: Claims to have the power of God within them, and views all the other students as below them.
  • The Charmer: Flirts with several of the students in the cast and may have some admirers in-story. Being a cult leader usually requires being a charming person, no?

Remi Pellegrino-Roux

Ultimate Brewer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/remi.png
In over their head
Remi is mostly known to the world through their parents, the Italian man Luca Pellegrino and the French woman Monique Roux, rather than their own talent. The two have a noted history as rivals in the wine-making business, both top producers in their countries, and it was a shock in the wine community when they suddenly married and moved to Germany. After setting up a new joint grape orchard and winery there, they settled in and had a child a few years later, Remi Markis Pellegrino-Roux. Growing up in an orchard, Remi had a lot of experience with the process of alcohol production and quickly found an interest in breweries and the creation of beer and similar malt liquors. They began helping their parents with wine production around age 12 and at age 14, they were allowed to apprentice at a brewery (as well as drink, as they reached the legal drinking age in Germany). They quickly were found to have a strong talent in the industry and was recruited to Hope’s Peak.

  • The Charmer: When they want to be, at least. They are quite charming, as evidenced when they jokingly flirt with Lokapele in the parlor.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: For a brief amount of time, although Romeo is certainly changing that. They were locked in a room for the prologue and chapter 1.
  • Perma-Stubble: Has some on their face.
  • Shrinking Violet: Seemingly so when they first appeared, backing off to the corner of the infirmary and crumpling in on themselves after being yelled at.
  • Sixth Ranger: Joins in chapter 2.

🌸🍥🍭🍧

Ultimate Reporter

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cherry_21.png
“Eh. Look, I’m sure you mean well, but I’m not telling my name to a bunch of strangers. I know who you are, though.”
If you happen to know anything about 🌸🍥🍭🍧, it’s that you know nothing about him. While he frequently makes the news for the lengths he’s willing to take to get a good story, there seems to be no evidence online (or anywhere else, for that matter) of his life before he became a reporter. If not for his reporting skills, 🌸🍥🍭🍧 is best known for his decora kei fashion and his outwardly cutesy personality. But who knows what lies underneath...
  • Amateur Sleuth: Being a reporter means you have to be pretty nosy, doesn't it?
  • The Baby of the Bunch: Well, baby is really stretching it, but they're the youngest at 16.
  • Deliberately Cute Child: All that decora kei fashion and rainbow hair helps to disarm people, doesn't it?
  • Freaky Fashion, Mild Mind: Despite his wild fashion sense, he's one of the more laid-back and rational students.
  • Insistent Terminology: Prefers people to call him by..well, anything except his real name. Students took to calling him "Emoji" or "Cherry" fairly quickly.
  • Wild Hair: Not only is it bright green, but he also has various rainbow ornaments sticking out of his ponytail.

    Mascots

The Overseer

The one who is running the killing game. Cold and unfeeling, they never express emotion, and don't mind stepping in directly when they feel like it
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Gives one to Rex before the chapter 2 motive when he attempts to kill them.
  • Establishing Character Moment: When they first appear, they shoot the unnamed one in the opening before stating that it was part of the deal, and that others will soon join.
  • Kick the Dog: Doesn't take a second thought at killing everyone's motivations or injuring them if the students push them.
  • Loophole Abuse: Never states that they can't help make distractions, so they do so. They also never claimed you can not sacrifice a dead family member. Nor did they specify what the students are voting on in the third trial. When called out in it, they admit that loopholes are their favourite thing.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Has red eyes and is extremely evil.

John Peterson

The Former Ultimate Cook, and a caretaker for the Ultimates. He hates having to work for the Overseer.
  • Ambiguously Human: Well, he might have been human, but he cannot die. He also apparently threw a piano at the Overseer hard enough to manage to steal their crown.
  • The Big Guy: He's 6'9.
  • The Determinator: He died 37 times trying to get to the Ultimates and try to protect them.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Gets stabbed in the chest during the prologue. Don't worry, he gets better.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He's here to look out for the students, and is pretty much the only one who has normal rules for them to follow. When the Overseer reveales the killing game, his first instinct is to try and stop them.

    Misc Characters

Connor Byrne

A friend of John's, and the Former Ultimate Candlepin Bowler. His fate is currently a mystery.

Tadashi Sasagawa

Seems to have connections to the Ultimates and the game, but is true role is unclear.

Unknown Woman

A young woman who seemed to have been in the last round of the games. She dies immediately.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: Dies in the narration setting up the story to show how ruthless the Overseer is.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Dies right after being introduced, so we know zilch about her.

Royal Roulette contains examples of:

  • The Ace: To be an Ultimate, you have to be the best in your field as well as under the age of 20. Even if it's for rather... Unconventional talents.
  • Alternate Universe: To the Danganronpa series. While the concept of Ultimates is a thing and there is a killing game, it differs wildly in various aspects.
  • Ambiguously Human: John, and the Overseer to an extent. They look human and need to eat... But they can't be killed.
  • Anyone Can Die: Unless your name is John or the Overseer. Then yes, everyone has a high chance of dying.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: The mastermind and the Overseer. The mastermind's identity is a secret while the Overseer's is played with, as the students can interact with them, but the Ultimates don't know the Overseer's real name.
  • Big Fancy Castle: The setting of this killing game. So far, only three areas are unlocked.
  • Beneath Notice: One of the currently living students is actually the mastermind, hiding from sight in this way, disregarding Adelia's claim.
  • Breaking Old Trends: Breaks several trends of the Danganronpa series, such as
    • Not having a Lucky Student
    • No animal mascots
    • A human(?) named John on the side of the students.
    • A student joining the cast after the start of the killing game.
    • Two seperate killers alive during one trial.
  • Building of Adventure: Most of the plot takes place at the castle, with the gardens nearby. Only time will tell if other locations will show up.
  • Cast Dropping Like Flies: it's a Danganronpa roleplay, what do you expect? Each chapter has at least two students die, and the third chapter has three deaths instead of two.
  • Cast Full of Gay: Several of the characters are gay, bi, and trans. In fact, none of them are straight, as revealed through the group chat as well as Word of God
  • Cast Of Snow Flakes: Standard for a Danganronpa roleplay. Each character is unique and has... Their own quirks.
  • Downer Beginning: The stundets wake up in an unknown location, and the man who gives them a tour gets stabbed. It only goes downhill from there, despite moments of levity.
  • Everyone Calls Them "Barkeep": No one knows the Overseer's real name.
  • Running Gag: Quite a few, actually.
    • Someone gets injured? Then you can bet that Lokapele will remove her shirt and use it as a temporary bandage.
  • School Forced Us Together: Normally, none of them would have interacted with each other, but thanks to Hope's Peak, they have now.
  • Sliding Scale of Silliness vs. Seriousness: Some moments are funny, such as HELLF!R3's flustered reactions to being flirted with. Other moments are horrifying, such as seeing John getting stabbed in the prologue.
  • Small, Secluded World: The students are confined to the castle and the gardens nearby it.
  • To Absent Friends: Luna and Rex grieve over Vanna together after the first trial, and swear to never forget her.
