Jin Himuro (Bolt Tanner)

Voiced by: Taiten Kusunoki (Japanese), Wayne Grayson (English)

A respected inmate at the Detention Center, who was also a former Pro Duelist. However, after being crushed by Jack, he spiraled into drink and depression, getting involved in underground dueling and eventually ending up at the Detention Center. Little more than a bully at first, he became one of Yusei's allies after Yusei defeated him using Yanagi's seemingly 'worthless' Deck, getting him fired up for the first time in ages.

He uses a yokai-themed aggro deck.

  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Although his deck hasn't been seen much, it seemingly revolves around rapidly crushing his opponents with high-attack, easy-to-summon monsters.
  • Brooklyn Rage: Dub only, given his accent.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: After he loses he becomes Yusei's friend.
  • Graceful Loser: Has no hard feelings losing to Yusei, and commends him for winning the Duel without utilising a strategy involving battling.
  • Mr. Exposition: He's the primary commentator on Team 5D's early duels. He's later replaced by the WRGP announcer.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: He suffers this courtesy of Takasu and his guards.
  • Worthy Opponent: He recognizes Yusei as a skilled duelist after seeing his first turn, and he does not let his guard down for the entire duel.
  • Youkai: His monsters are all based on various types of Youkai.

    Yanagi Tenzen (Tenzen Yanagi)

An eccentric and enthusiastic old man who befriends Yusei on the way to the Detention Center after seeing the Crimson Dragon's appearance. Having traveled extensively, he has some knowledge concerning ancient treasures and the legend of the People of the Stars.

He uses an Ancient Treasure deck, which he assembled over the course of a long career in anthropology and archaeology.

  • Cloud Cuckoolander: His mannerisms make him come off as just a little bit senile...
  • Collector of the Strange: Strange cards that is.
  • Fanboy: Of the Signers in general, and Yusei especially.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: He really does want to be a good Duelist, and he's very proud of his Hidden Treasure Deck, but he's long on ambition and short on talent.
  • Lethal Joke Character: His monsters all have terrible stats and effects that deal damage to their controller, and being the borderly-senile old man he is, Yanagi gets demolished when he tries to play them. The deck however comes with Spell cards to redirect the damage, which Yusei uses to good effect.
  • Mr. Exposition: Teaches Yusei about the Signers.
  • Perilous Old Fool: He's a former explorer and he seems to be afraid of absolutely nothing. He's overwhelmingly cheerful and pretty sharp, and he stands by Yusei no matter what.
  • Smooch of Victory: He tries to give one to Yusei early on.
  • Too Dumb to Live: When it comes to playing the game. He doesn't even read the effects of his cards before playing them, thus getting wrecked more by his own cards than the opponent, and does not really understand the concept of Synchros.

Voiced by: Bernard Ackah (Japanese), Sean Schemmel (English)

  • Anime Hair: His truly colossal pompadour.
  • Catchphrase: "EVERYBODY LISTEN!"
  • Combat Commentator: This is his job. He even comments Yusei's duel with Z-One, so people will concentrate more on evacuating.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: The MC can be played against in some of the videogames, and he's usually a pretty tricky opponent... in fact, he's a lot more dangerous than plenty of the people he commentates on, particularly in Stardust Accelerator.
  • Determinator: Even when the city is about to be destroyed and his chances of survival are slim, he will continue to commentate.
  • Gratuitous English: His catchphrase "EVERYBODY LISTEN!!!".
  • Large-Ham Announcer: He provides the page image.
  • Mr. Exposition: He often explains the rules or some card effects.
  • Nice Guy: From his commentary, he's one of the nicest characters in the series. He's willing to play hypeman to widely-disliked figures or victims of prejudice like Yusei and Aki in the Fortune Cup, and he helps with the evacuation of the city.
  • No Name Given: He's only known as the MC.
  • Skewed Priorities: While Neo Domino City's fate is at stake at the hands of the Ark Cradle, the MC, on top of assisting with the evacuation of Neo Domino City's residents, decides to commentate on the Duel between Yusei and Z-one, admitting that he'd rather die than miss the opportunity.

Hideo and Setsuko Izayoi (Mr. and Mrs. Izinski)

Hideo and Setsuko Izayoi (Mr. and Mrs. Izinski)

Voiced by Tetsu Inada (Hideo) and Akira Nakagawa (Setsuko) (Japanese), Marc Thompson (Hideo) and Priscilla Everett (Setsuko) (English)

The parents of Aki Izayoi. After an incident when she was young triggered her psychic power, they didn't know how to accept her anymore, eventually leading to her running away from home. After Aki was left in a coma after the attack on the Arcadia Movement, they visited her in hospital, blaming themselves for what had happened. With Yusei's help, they were able to reconcile with their daughter.

  • It's All My Fault: Mr. Izayoi's first meeting with Yusei has him explaining his daughter's upbringing to Yusei and how his questionable parenting led to her turning out the way she did, and how he'd been regretting it ever since, blaming himself for never being able to show her the love she needed due to his job.
  • Moment of Weakness: When Aki's power manifests for the first time, her father's reaction was fear and to label her a monster. He instantly regrets his choice of words, but the damage had already been done. As he admits in the dub, on that day, the Black Rose was born.
  • Parental Abandonment: They come to regret this.
  • Parents as People: Even though they loved their daughter Akiza, their fear of her psychic powers got the best of them. They were afraid of her, pushed her away and sent Akiza to duel academy. Causing Akiza to feel more isolated and abandoned, she ran home and to her shock and horror, Akiza saw her parents living happily without her. Causing Akiza to run away, using her psychic powers to hurt others and they both unintentionally drove Akiza, down a hate filled path.
  • Shipper on Deck: Both of them for their daughter and Yusei. When Akiza is about to leave for Satellite to stop the Dark Signers her father assures her mother that Yusei will be with her so she'll be in good hands. This is pushed in further in the final episode when she finishes packing her suitcase to leave Neo Domino City for medical school it's their idea for Akiza to try tell Yusei how she feels before she leaves.
Setsuko: Have you said goodbye to him yet?
    Akiza: Huh?
Hideo: To Yusei we mean. You're the way you are now thanks to him, you should go talk to him
Setsuko: Go see him and burn his smile into your memory, you know it'll cheer you up even if you're far away
    Akiza: I understand!!
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Downplayed, but you can see that Aki got her red hair from her mother.
  • When You Coming Home, Dad?: Because of his job as a politician, Hideo couldn't spend enough time with Aki, and she grew to hate his job. A call from his job while they're having a duel eventually triggers Aki's Psycho Power.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Hideo slaps a young Aki when he thought she was a monster. (This was cut from the dub)

Voiced by: Daisuke Hosomi (Japanese), Wayne Grayson (English)

Yusei's father and the lead developer of Old Momentum. Rex and Rutger Godwin were his assistants. He had wanted to stop the project after realizing the risks involved, but ended up being replaced by Rutger. He managed to reclaim 3 of the cards needed to seal Old Momentum's Safety Controllers and entrusted them to Rex Godwin. He was killed in the Zero Reverse shortly afterwards, but was able to ensure his son's survival beforehand. His ghost shows up in a few episodes to assist Yusei or give him advice.

    Stephanie

Stephanie

Voiced by: Lyrian (Japanese), Sarah Natochenny (English)

A shy cafe waitress who has a crush on Jack, and is another rival for Carly and Mikage.

    Angela (Angela Raines)

Angela (Angela Raines)

Voiced by: Chieko Higuchi (Japanese), Annice Moriarty (English)

A famous Neo Domino City reporter who often butts heads with Carly.

  • Accidental Misnaming: She calls Yusei “Fusei Yudo” in the dub, which prompts Carly to correct her. Not that Angela really cares.
  • Asshole Victim: She's one of the victims who are sacrificed to Earthbound Immortal Wiraqocha Rasca when it's summoned. Considering Angela's asshole behavior up until that point, it's kind of hard to feel sorry for her.
  • Foil: She’s pretty much the opposite of Carly in every way. A popular reporter with an overinflated ego who writes lies in the headliners and unquestioningly takes orders from Goodwin. Taken a step further when Carly becomes a wielder of an Earthbound Immortal, while Angela is made a sacrifice to one.
  • Jerkass: She treats Carly with no respect, tends to write lies in news headliners, and cares more about getting dirt on celebrities than covering more important stories.
  • Paparazzi: She grabs whatever kind of dirt on celebrities she can get, such as Jack originating from Satellite, without any consideration of that person's feelings or what kind of damage it would do to their reputation, and if she’s unable to get any factual information on an event, she'll make up lies about it. An example is when Angela falsely writes in the headliners that Yusei cheated in his duel with Jack despite not getting a single comment about what actually happened from either of them. She also takes orders from Goodwin in regards to covering up incidents without questioning what the situation or how bad the threat it represents actually is.
    Eurea Pastel

Eurea Pastel

Aporia's lover during his life as a young adult, whom he fought alongside against the Machine Imperials. Her death is what results the manifestation of Placido, the embodiment of Aporia's despair of losing her.
  • Battle Couple: Implied in the dub, Aporia refers to her as his "partner-in-arms" and have shown to have fought a Machine Emperor Granel in his flashbacks.
  • The Lost Lenore: Aporia wasn't able to move on from her death, and as a result the despair of losing her is what manifests Placido.
  • The Voiceless: Is never voiced in both Japanese and English.
    Other

  • Apron Matron: Zora (Yusei, Jack, and Crow's landlady in the third arc).
  • Loan Shark: Garome/Don Piero is one, taking advantage of people's desperation to make them sign extortionate contracts. He's not even above sending his thugs after children. Even his deck is designed to flood his opponent's field with "Loan Tokens" and then inflicting effect damage through "Toichi the Nefarious Debt Collector". However, after Jack defeats him, Jack takes the contracts from him and destroys them, presumably putting him out of business.
