Main Characters

    Nyneve Ahmadzai

A young witch who hides her long hair from her classmates and dreads conscription. Wants nothing more than to live a quiet life.

  • All Genes Are Codominant: Despite the unlikeliness, Nyneve inherited her father's dark skin and her mother's light blonde hair.
  • Amazon Chaser: Nyneve is starstruck by Io when she finally sees her face, combined with her towering height and bulging muscles. She refers to her as 'your hot older sister' to Batu's intense consternation.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Her sexuality is never spelled out, but when she speculates about her future to Banana, Nyneve mentions "meeting a nice girl".
  • Anguished Haircut: It wasn't against her will, but when Nyneve cut her hair, it was clearly a breaking moment, and the imagery was strongly suggestive of suicide ideation.
  • Blessed with Suck: Her hair is almost the longest seen in the comic. Only her father and Viceroy Jung are shown to have longer hair. Despite that, she has poor control of combat magic, and the threat of long hair assures she will either end up in the Witch Guard or dead by their hands.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: She was hoping to be a scholar and didn't want anything to do with conscription, she put most of her studies in academics rather than magic. After she went on the run, this became a problem in areas where magic was necessary such as trying to make a magic broom.
  • Death Glare: Gives one of these to Prill during a fight where Prill calls her out for angsting over her father's death.
  • Delinquent Hair: Nyneve's shorn hair marks her as a law-breaker amongst the Hyalin, forcing her to wear a hood or use glamor spells.
  • Driven to Suicide: Almost, after she's conscripted by the organization that killed her father.
  • Foreshadowing: Jaga's death at the hands of the Witch Guard foreshadowed Nyneve's own trouble with her hair.
  • Freak Out: Upon being conscripted and her hair illusion being dispelled in front of her entire class, she cut almost all of her hair off; which is punishable by death in Hyalin.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Like her mother, Nyneve is kind to her friends and teachers.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: She wants to become a scholar, but has little skill at combat focused magic. She's terrified she'll be conscripted because of her hair length.
  • Important Haircut: Nyneve's cut after being conscripted shows her crossing a line in resisting the laws and customs of Hyalin.
  • Like Father, Like Daughter: Like Jaga, Nyneve also has very long hair, making her a target for Hyalin's magical police.
  • Powerful, but Inaccurate: And she's not even that powerful. Her skills lie mostly in the academics of magic, where she is incredibly adept.
  • Shaking Her Hair Loose: When Nyneve shows Prill and Batu her true hair length.
  • Suddenly Shouting: Responds to Prill's accusations of self-centeredness calmly at first, but quickly escalates into yelling.

    Mongke Batu

Nyneve's classmate and friend. A gentle person who's friendly to everyone.

  • Gentle Giant: A very large young man, and extremely kind-hearted.
  • Heroes Love Dogs: His cast page specifically mentions that he lives in a home with lots of dogs and is very fond of them.

    Dai "Prill" Siyue

The star pupil of Nyneve's class. She is devoted to Hyalin and bullies Nyneve.

  • The Ace: And well aware of it too.
  • Alpha Bitch: Prill is large and in charge in school, and part of her constant ridicule of Nyneve comes from Nyneve's subpar magic skills. Prill is beautiful, wealthy, and the top student in their class—and she's aware of all this.
  • Brainy Brunette: Top of her class with a head of thick, dark hair.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Prill's introduction in the comic is giving Nyneve a terrifying look and trying to shut her out of a conversation with Batu.
  • The Fashionista: Seems to have a keen sense of fashion and is always seen looking very chic.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Prill can't stand that Nyneve might be smarter than her, even if her magic far outshines Nyneve's. She also appears to be deeply envious of Nyneve's relationship with her mother.
Prill: What's it like, being able to take your mother's love for granted? Must be nice.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: When she gets into a arguement with Nyneve, she's naturally very catty and does take her wording too far. That said, she wasn't wrong in saying Nyneve gives up on things way too easily when she can't figure them out. Nyneve even flashes back to the argument when she nearly gives up on her magic broom crafting.
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: Despite her own acknowledgement that Nyneve has reason to hate the Witch Guard, Prill remains intensely loyal to Hyalin ("people who don't love Hyalin" is even listed among her character dislikes).
  • Patriotic Fervor: Loves Hyalin and the Witch Guard.
  • The Rival: To Nyneve — or, at least, Prill thought so.
  • Sore Loser: Nyneve accuses her of this during a fight
Why couldn't you, with your perfect grades and perfect hair, handle just one person in the room being smarter than you?
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Tries to pull one of these with Nyneve after she draft dodges, but Nyneve is not having it.

Secondary Characters

    Banana
The talking crow who met up with Nyneve after her flight from home, and is determined to bring her into the resistance against Hyalin's ruling class.

     Io Batu

    Jaga Ahmadzai

Nyneve's father and Veda's husband. He was killed by the Witch Guard for the length of his hair.

    Viceroy Jung
  • Affably Evil: To the new reader, he seems like nothing more than a kind, slightly scary old soldier. He's not.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Sure he's hunting down Nyneve for draft dodging, and was probably responsible for burning her father to death, but he sure is beloved by the rest of Hyalin! Nyneve's own teacher greets him warmly and Prill is ecstatic that he's come to personally oversee their conscription trial.

    Veda Ahmadzai

Nyneve's mother. She runs a renowned apothecary from her home.

  • Mama Bear: One of her dislikes on the cast page is "people who hurt Nyneve". She doesn't hesitate to help Nyneve escape after she cuts her hair off.
  • Happily Married: At least she was, until her husband was executed. It's implied Veda never really recovered.
  • Oh, Crap!: When she comes home to find that Nyneve cut off her hair, an offense punishable by death. She's only down a moment before leaping into action though.
